(Holism)

Originally long-stemmed adjectives with gemination in the comparative and superlative showing Pre-Cluster Shortening: great 'great'/gretter, similarly reed 'red', whit 'white', hoot 'hot', late. (The old short-vowel comparative of late has been lexicalised as a separate form, later, with new analogical later/latest.)

 長母音に子音群が後続すると短母音化する "Pre-Cluster Shortening" は,ありふれた音変化の1種と考えられ,実際に英語音韻史では異なる時代に異なる環境で生じている.Lass (71) によれば,古英語で生じたものは以下の通り(gospel については「#2173. gospel から d が脱落した時期」 ([2015-04-09-1]) を参照).

About the seventh century . . . long vowels shortened before /CC/ if another consonant followed, either in the coda or the onset of the next syllable, as in bræ̆mblas 'branbles' < */bræːmblɑs/, gŏdspel 'gospel' < */goːdspel/. This removes one class of superheavy syllables.

 この古英語の音変化は3子音連続の前位置で生じたものだが,初期中英語で生じたバージョンでは2子音連続の前位置で生じている.今回取り上げている形容詞語幹の長短の交替に関与するのは,この初期中英語期のものである (Lass 72--73) .

Long vowels shortened before sequences of only two consonants . . . , and --- variably--- certain ones like /st/ that were typically ambisyllabic . . . . So shortening in kĕpte 'kept' < cēpte (inf. cēpan), mĕtte met < mētte'' (inf. mētan), brēst 'breast' < breŏst 'breast' < brēost. Shortening failed in the same environment in priest < prēost; in words like this it may well be the reflex of an inflected form like prēostas (nom./acc.pl.) that has survived, i.e. one where the /st/ could be interpreted as onset of the second syllable; the same holds for beast, feast from French. This shortening accounts for the 'dissociation' between present and past vowels in a large class of weak verbs, like those mentioned earlier and dream/dreamt, leave/left, lose/lost, etc. (The modern forms are even more different from each other due to later changes in both long and short vowels that added qualitative dissociation to that in length: ME /keːpən/ ? /keptə/, now /kiːp/ ? /kɛpt/, etc.)

 latter (および last) は,この初期中英語の音変化による出力が,しぶとく現代まで生き残った事例として銘記されるべきものである.

#3621. 「命令法」を認めず「原形の命令用法」とすればよい? (2) [imperative][mood][subjunctive][tense][future][category][elt][3sp]

(1) [imperative][mood][subjunctive][tense][future][category][elt]

 「#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]) や「#3036. Lowth の禁じた語法・用法」 ([2017-08-19-1]) で紹介したように,規範文法家の第一人者 Robert Lowth による1762年の文法書には様々な語法の禁止条項がみえるが,連日取り上げている形容詞の比較についても,2重比較級 (double_comparative) と,意味的に過剰な最上級へのダメ出しがなされている.Lowth (34--35) より関連箇所を抜き出そう.

[4] Double Comparatives and Superlatives are improper.

"The Duke of Milan, / And his more braver Daughter could controul thee." "After the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee." Shakespeare, Tempest. Acts xxvi. 5. So likewise Adjectives, that have in themselves a Superlative signification, admit not properly the Superlative form superadded: "Whosoever of you will be chiefest, shall be servant of all." Mark x. 44. "One of the first and chiefest instances of prudence." Atterbury, Serm. IV. "While the extremest parts of the earth were meditating a submission." Ibid. I. 4.

"But first and chiefest with thee bring
Him, that you soars on golden wing,
Guiding the fiery-wheeled throne,
The Cherub Contemplation." Milton, Il Penseroso.
"That on the sea's extremest border stood." Addison, Travels.

But poetry is in possession of these two improper Superlatives, and may be indulged in the use of them.
. . . .
[5] "Lesser, says Mr. Johnson, is a barbarous corruption of Less, formed by the vulgar from the habit of terminating comparisons in er."
"Attend to what a lesser Muse indites." Addison.
Worser sounds much more barbarous, only because it has not been so frequently used:

"Chang'd to a worser shape thou canst not be." Shakespeare, 1 Hen. VI.
"A dreadful quiet felt, and worser far / Than arms, a sullen interval of war." Dryden.

          The Comparison of Adjectives.

The comparative degree of adjectives is formed by adding er, the superlative by adding est, to the positive; as, fair, fairer, fairest; lovely, lovelier, loveliest; sweet, sweeter, sweetest; low, lower, lowest; high, higher, highest.
Some words are irregularly compared; as good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; little, less, least; near, nearer, next; much, more, most; many (or moe), more for moer), most (for moest); late, latter, latest or last.
Some comparatives form a superlative by adding most, as nether, nethermost; outer, outmost; under, undermost; up, upper, uppermost; fore, former, foremost.
Many adjectives do not admit of comparison by terminations, and are only compared by more and most, as benevolent, more benevolent, most benevolent.
All adjectives may be compared by more and most, even when they have comparatives and superlatives regularly formed; as fair; fairer, or more fair; fairest, or most fair.
In adjectives that admit a regular comparison, the comparative more is oftener used than the superlative most, as more fair is oftener written for fairer, than most fair for fairest.
The comparison of adjectives is very uncertain; and being much regulated by commodiousness of utterance, or agreeableness of sound, is not easily reduced to rules.
   Monosyllables are commonly compared.
Polysyllables, or words of more than two syllables, are seldom compared otherwise than by more and most, as deplorable, more deplorable, most deplorable.
Disyllables are seldom compared if they terminate in some, as fulsome, toilsome; in ful, as careful, spleenful, dreadful; in ing, as trifling, charming; in ous, as porous; in less, as careless, harmless; in ed, as wretched; in id, as candid; in al, as mortal; in ent, as recent, fervent; in ain, as certain; in ive, as missive; in dy, as woody; in fy, as puffy; in ky, as rocky, except lucky; in my, as roomy; in ny, as skinny; in py, as ropy, except happy; in ry, as hoary.

#3617. -er/-estmore/most か?

(i) Monosyllabic bases take suffixes: bigg-er, bigg-est, etc. Periphrasis is usually not available (**more big), though there are exceptions, e.g. when two adjectives are predicated of a single head (more dead than alive). Suffixed participles must take periphrasis (**smashed-er).
(ii) Disyllables preferentially take suffixes, though periphrasis is available for many (hairy, hairi-er/more hairy). Some suffix(oid)s however require periphrasis: e.g. -ish (**greenish-er), -est (**honest-er), -ous (**grievous-er), -id (**rigid-er), as well as -less, -ful, and some others. Participles cannot be suffixed (**hidden-er). This may be a function of the somewhat ambiguous status of the comparative and superlative endings, somewhere between inflections proper and derivational affixes. (The former are normally terminal in the word: care-less-ness-es.)
(iii) Trisyllabic and longer forms take periphrasis (**beautiful-er, **religiously-er); hence the comic effect of Alice's 'curiouser and curiouser'. But suffixation of longer forms is available for special stylistic purposes . . . .

比較される例について「#55. through の語源」 ([2009-06-22-1]),「#86. one の発音」 ([2009-07-22-1]),「#693. as, so, also」 ([2011-03-21-1]) を参照.
 以上,Lass (156) を参照して執筆した.

#3615. 初期近代英語の2重比較級・最上級は大言壮語にすぎない? [double_comparative][comparison][shakespeare][style][prescriptive_grammar][hc][adjective][superlative]

初期近代に worser, more larger, more better, most worst, most unkindest などの2重比較級 (double_comparative) や2重最上級が用いられていたことは,英語史ではよく知られている.「#195.

It's notable that such forms [= double comparatives and superlatives] can be found in consciously grandiloquent discourse, as with the double comparative of (16a), and that Ben Jonson explicitly claims the usage as an 'Englishe Atticisme, or eloquent Phrase of speech', perorating, as if to prove his point, on the double superlative of (16b):

(16) a) The Kings of Mede and Lyconia
With a more larger list of sceptres (Shakespeare 1623/1606--7)

     b) an Englishe Atticisme, or eloquent Phrase of speech, imitating the manner of the most ancientest, and finest Grecians, who, for more emphasis, and vehemencies sake used [so] to speake. (Jonson 1640)

本ブログでも,言語変化の速度については speed_of_changeschedule_of_language_change で様々に論じてきたが,おおいに可能性のある方向性ではないかと考えている.
 タイポロジー(類型論)と対照言語学という2分野は,力点の置き方の違いがあるだけで実質的な関心は近いと見ているが,そうすると「通時的タイポロジー」と「通時的対照言語学」も互いに近いことになる.これらは,近々に開催される HiSoPra* の研究会でこれまで提起されてきた「対照言語史」の考え方にも近い.

#3611. なぜ He is to blame. He is to be blamed. とならないのか? [infinitive][syntax][passive][voice][construction][sobokunagimon]

標題の He is to blame. は「彼は責められるべきだ;彼には責任がある」という意味のフレーズだが,厳密に態 (voice) を考慮すれば,「彼」は「責められる」立場であるから He is to be blamed. と不定詞も受け身になるべきだと思われるかもしれない.実際,後者でも意味は通じるし,もちろん文法的なのだが,慣習的なフレーズとしては前者が用いられる.なぜだろうか.
 これは,動名詞について解説した「#3604. なぜ The house is building. で「家は建築中である」という意味になるのか?」 ([2019-03-10-1]) と「#3605. This needs explaining. He is to blame. の場合には,意味上,受け身として解釈されるというわけだ.There is a house to let.I have something to say. のような「形容詞的用法」の不定詞も,態の中和という発想に由来する(中島,p. 238).
ただし,不定詞(や動名詞)の態の中和は,あくまでそれが強い名詞性を保っていた時代の特徴である.近代以降,不定詞(や動名詞)はむしろ動詞的な性格を強めてきており,中和されていた態の対立が復活してきている.その結果,慣習的ではないとはいえ He is to be blamed.

(4) [spelling][orthography][minim][vowel][spelling_pronunciation_gap][eme][me_dialect][lexical_diffusion]

 昨日の記事 ([2019-03-13-1]) に引き続いての話題.中英語における <u> と <o> の分布を111のテキストにより調査した Wełna (317) は,結論として以下のように述べている.

. . . the examination of the above corpus data has shown a lack of any consistent universal rule replacing <u> with <o> in the graphically obscure contexts of the postvocalic graphemes <m, n>. Even words with identical roots, like the forms of the lemmas SUN (OE sunne), SUMMER (OE sumor) and SON (OE sunu), SOME (OE sum) which showed a similar distribution of <u/o> spellings in most Middle English dialects, eventually (and unpredictably) have retained either the original spelling <u> (sun) or the modified spelling <o> (son). In brief, each word under discussion modified its spelling at a different time and in different regions in a development which closely resembles the circumstances of lexical diffusion.

 このように奥歯に物が挟まったような結論なのだが,Wełna は時代と方言の観点から次の傾向を指摘している.

. . . o-spellings first emerged in the latter half of the 12th century in the (South-)West (honi "honey" . . .). Later, a tendency to use the new spelling <o> is best documented in London and in the North.

Wełna 本人も述べているように,調査の対象としたレンマは HUNDRED, HUNGER, HONEY, NUN, SOME, SUMMER, SUN, SON の8つにすぎず,ここから一般的な結論を引き出すのは難しいのかもしれない.さらなる研究が必要のようだ.

#3607. 中英語における <u> の <o> による代用 (3) [spelling][orthography][minim][vowel][spelling_pronunciation_gap][eme][scribe][anglo-norman]

a. the 12th century English manuscripts employ the spelling <u>;
b. the first o-spellings emerge in the latter half of the 12th century;
c. <o> for <u> is still rare in the early 13th century and is absent in Ormulum, Katherine, Vices and Virtues, Proclamation, and several other texts;
d. from the latter half of the 13th century onwards the frequency of <o> grows, which results in both old <u> and new <o> spellings randomly used in texts composed even by the same scribe.

Though they are both weak fellows, she gives them gifts.

#3605. This needs explaining. --- 「need +動名詞」の構文 [gerund][participle][passive][voice][construction]

 昨日の記事「#3604. なぜ The house is building.

This machine wants repairing.
 ・ The fence requires painting.
・ A person who steals deserves punishing.
・ It doesn't bear thinking about.
・ Use every man after his desert, and who should 'scape whipping? --- Hamlet, II. ii. 555--6
・ What is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

 もちろん各々に動名詞の受動態を用いても,それはそれで意味論的にも統語的にも適格ではあるが,「構文としての響き」というべきものは失われるのかもしれない.いずれにせよニッチに生き残ってきた構文である.

標題の文は古風な表現ではあるが,現在でも使われることがある.「家が建てられているところだ」という受動的な意味に対応させるには,受動進行形を用いて The house is being built. となるべきではないのかと疑問に思われるかもしれない.この疑問はもっともであり,確かに後者の受動進行形の構文が標準的ではある.しかし,それでもなお,標題の The house is building. は可能だし,歴史的にはむしろ普通だった.能動態と受動態という態 (voice) の区別にうるさいはずの英語で,なぜ標題の文が許されるのだろうか.
歴史的には,The house is building.building は現在分詞ではなく動名詞である.同じ -ing 形なので紛らわしいが,両者は機能がまったく異なる.The house is building. の前段階には The house is a-building. という構文があり,さらにその前段階には The house is on building.

The whilst this play is playing --- Hamlet, III. ii. 93.
・ While grace is saying -- Merch. V., II. ii. 202
 ・ What's doing here?
 ・ The dinner is cooking.
 ・ The book is printing.
 ・ The tea is drawing.
・ The history which is making about us.

標題の問いに戻ろう.主語の the house と,building のなかに収まっているもともとの動詞 build とは,歴史的にいえば直接的な統語関係にあるわけではない.言い方をかえれば,build the house という動詞句を前提とした構文ではないということだ.一方,現代の標準的な The house is being built. は,その動詞句を前提とした構文である.つまり,2つの構文は起源がまったく異なっており,比べて合ってもしかたない代物なのである.
 現在分詞と動名詞が,まったく異なる機能をもちながらも,同じ -ing 形となっている歴史的経緯については,「#2421. 現在分詞と動名詞の協働的発達」 ([2015-12-13-1]) を参照されたい.

#3603. 帝国主義,水族館,辞書 [borrowing][history][cosmopolitan_vocabulary][linguistic_imperialism]

Gibraltar English」 ([2017-04-25-1])) .

[comparative_linguistics][family_tree][methodology][borrowing][contact][reconstruction]

(2) [comparative_linguistics][indo-european][family_tree][biology][race][language_myth]

 McMahon and McMahon (19--20) もそのような論客である.一般的にいって,遺伝子と言語の間に相関関係がないと考えるほうが不自然ではないかという議論だ.

. . . since we are talking here about the histories of populations, which consist of people who both carry genes and use languages, it might be more surprising if there were no correlations between genetic and linguistic configurations. The observation of this correlation, like so many others, goes back to Darwin . . . , who suggested that, 'If we possessed a perfect pedigree of mankind, a genealogical arrangement of the races of man would afford the best classification of the various languages now spoken throughout the world'. The norm today is to accept a slight tempering of this hypothesis, such that, 'The correlation between genes and languages cannot be perfect . . .', because both languages and genes can be replaced independently, but, 'Nevertheless . . . remains positive and statistically significant' . . . . This correlation is supported by a range of recent studies. For instance, Barbujani . . . reports that, 'In Europe, for example, . . . several inheritable diseases differ, in their incidence, between geographically close but linguistically distant populations', while Poloni et al. . . . show that a group of individuals fell into four non-overlapping classes on the basis of their genetic characteristics and whether they spoke an Indo-European, Khoisan, Niger-Congo or Afro-Asiatic language. In other words, there is a general and telling statistical correlation between genetic and linguistic features, which reflects interesting and investigable parallelism rather than determinism. Genetic and linguistic commonality now therefore suggests ancestral identity at an earlier stage: as Barbujani . . . observes, 'Population admixture and linguistic assimilation should have weakened the correspondence between patterns of genetic and linguistic diversity. The fact that such patterns are, on the contrary, well correlated at the allele-frequency level . . . suggests that parallel linguistic and allele-frequency change were not the exception, but the rule.

 McMahon and McMahon

(Freeman 294) .

I am sorry that, speaking so noble a language as we do, we have not a more certain Measure of it, as they have in France: when they have an 'Academy' erected for that purpose, and endowed with large privileges by the present King.

 そして,その半年後の12月7日に,Royal Society は英語アカデミーの設立の動議を提出し,投票を行なっている.その投票については,Birch が History of the Royal Society (I, p. 499) にて以下の記録を残している (Freeman 294) .

It being suggested that there were persons of the Society whose genius was very proper and inclined to improve the English tongue, particularly for philosophic purposes, it was voted that there should be a committee for improving the English language; and that they meet at Sir Peter Wyche's lodgings in Gray's-Inn once or twice a month, and give an account of their proceedings, when called upon.

We have besides these in the Imperial City one Emminent Academy of selected wits: whose endeavours are to reform all errors in books, and then to licence them; to purifie our Native language from Barbarism or Solecism, to the height of Eloquence, by regulating the termes and phrases therof into constant use of the most significant words, proverbs, and phrases, and justly appropriating them either to the Lofty, mean, or Comic stile. These likewise translate the best Authors, and render them in their genuine sense to us very perspicuous: and make Dictionaries in all languages, wherein the proper terms of art for every notion and thing in every trade, manufacture and science is genuinely rendered and with its derivation very perspicuous.
We have also in each of the provinciall Cities (which have Universities) Free Schools for the attaining of the Languages, Singing, Dancing, Fencing, Riding, and writing, either by Brachugraphy, Hieroglyphic, or an Instrument we have made to write two copies at once, at one and the same motion, for dispatch. For all which we have public Governours and masters sit for each place respectively; chosen by the representative body of that Academie every three years. (pp. 42--44)
