Oxford Word of the Year

CLIPPING [1930s in this sense]. Also clipped form, clipped word, shortening. An abbreviation formed by the loss of word elements, usually syllabic: pro from professional, tec from detective. The process is attested from the 16c (coz from cousin 1559, gent from gentleman 1564); in the early 18c, Swift objected to the reduction of Latin mobile vulgus (the fickle throng) to mob. Clippings can be either selective, relating to one sense of a word only (condo is short for condominium when it refers to accommodation, not to joint sovereignty), or polysemic (rev stands for either revenue or revision, and revs for the revolutions of wheels). There are three kinds of clipping:

(1) Back-clippings, in which an element or elements are taken from the end of a word: ad(vertisement), chimp(anzee), deli(catessen), hippo(potamus), lab(oratory), piano(forte), reg(ulation)s. Back-clipping is common with diminutives formed from personal names Cath(erine) Will(iam). Clippings of names often undergo adaptations: Catherine to the pet forms Cathie, Kate, Katie, William to Willie, Bill, Billy. Sometimes, a clipped name can develop a new sense: willie a euphemism for penis, billy a club or a male goat. Occasionally, the process can be humorously reversed: for example, offering in a British restaurant to pay the william.
(2) Fore-clippings, in which an element or elements are taken from the beginning of a word: ham(burger), omni(bus), violon(cello), heli(copter), alli(gator), tele(phone), earth(quake). They also occur with personal names, sometimes with adaptations: Becky for Rebecca, Drew for Andrew, Ginny for Virginia. At the turn of the century, a fore-clipped word was usually given an opening apostrophe, to mark the loss: 'phone, 'cello, 'gator. This practice is now rare.
(3) Fore-and-aft clippings, in which elements are taken from the beginning and end of a word: in(flu)enza, de(tec)tive. This is commonest with longer personal names: Lex from Alexander, Liz from Elizabeth. Such names often demonstrate the versatility of hypocoristic clippings: Alex, Alec, Lex, Sandy, Zander; Eliza, Liz, Liza, Lizzie, Bess, Betsy, Beth, Betty.

Clippings are not necessarily uniform throughout a language: mathematics becomes maths in BrE and math in AmE. Reverend as a title is usually shortened to Rev or Rev., but is Revd in the house style of Oxford University Press. Back-clippings with -ie and -o are common in AusE and NZE: arvo afternoon, journo journalist. Sometimes clippings become distinct words far removed from the applications of the original full forms: fan in fan club is from fanatic; BrE navvy, a general labourer, is from a 19c use of navigator, the digger of a 'navigation' or canal. . . .

#5198. 地名にみられる有標性の階層 [markedness][typology][onomastics][toponymy][article][hydronymy]

 地名には共時的,形式的な観点から階層性があるのではないか? Van Langendonck (33--34) で,そのような興味深い提案が紹介されている.

   ZERO MARKING, as in city and town names: London, Berlin;

   SUFFIXING, as in country names: Fin-land, German-y;

   ARTICLE PREPOSING, as in names of, e.g. fields, regions, and rivers: the Highlands, the Rhine;

The use of CLASSIFIERS plus possibly an article, as in names of seas, oceans, or deserts: the North Sea, the Gobi Desert

この地名にみられる有標性の階層は,人間の組織的な関与の深さと連動しているのではないかという.人間社会にとって,都市や国はきわめて重要な対象だが,それに比べれば広域・河川・海・砂漠などは人間社会への影響が何段階か小さいように思われる.上記の階層は「人間中心の」連続体 ("'anthropocentric' cline") といってよさそうだ (Van Langendonck 34) .
 さらに Van Langendonck (34) は,定冠詞の有無に関して,示唆に富んだ見解を述べている.

. . . English shows the humanized place-names (e.g. settlement names) omitting the article, whilst the non-human place-names (e.g. river names) tend to adopt the article. This can be observed where the names of former colonies or regions lose their article when they become independent countries: the Ukraine > Ukraine, The Congo > Congo, the Lebanon > Lebanon.

Van Langendonck and Van de Velde (33--38)

これは,例えば "Bank is a homonymous word."

Contact-induced transfer ─┬─ Borrowing
              │
              └─ Replication ─┬─ Lexical replication
                       │
                       └─ Grammatical replication ─┬─ Contact-induced grammaticalization
                                       │
                                       └─ Restructuring ─┬─ Loss
                                                 │
                                                 └─ Rearrangement

Heine and Kuteva によれば,これらの用語やその背後にある洞察は,Weinreich に負っている (86) .replication とは "kinds of transfer that do not involve phonetic substance of any kind" のことであり,伝統的に "structural borrowing" や "(grammatical) calquing" と呼ばれてきたものに相当する.

 Heine and Kuteva (87) は,5種類の言語項移動を認めている.

   a. form, that is, sounds or combinations of sounds,
   b. meanings (including grammatical meanings) or combinations of meanings,
   c. form-meaning units,
   d. syntactic relations, that is, the order of meaningful elements,
   e. any combination of (a) through (d).

Since the subjunctive is usually a marker of certain types of subordination, it is very difficult to say what the subjunctive "means" in any given language. There is a long literature on this problem in European languages, and no satisfactory solution. At most, it might be said that the subjunctive has a very general meaning such as "non-asserted" and then it takes more specific meanings from the context in which it occurs.
Considered cross-linguistically, there is evidence of a relation between the subjunctive and imperative or related moods. When subjunctive forms are used in main clauses, they have an imperative function in Maasai, Basque and Yupik, and/or a hortative function in Tarascan, Pawnee and Maasai, in keeping with their non-asserted subordinate clause functions. The marking of subjunctive parallels that of indicative or imperative in most languages. In Maasai and Pawnee, the subjunctive is a prefix, just as the imperative is, and in Tarascan, Ojibwa and Georgian the subordinating mood is expressed in the same way as the imperative or optative

2 (bus.syu) 3 (bu-s-syu)
クリントン 3 (ku.rin.ton) 5 (ku-ri-n-to-n)
トヨタ 3 (to.yo.ta) 3 (to-yo-ta)
ホンダ 2 (hon.da) 3 (ho-n-da)
ニッサン 2 (nis.san) 4 (ni-s-sa-n)

 窪薗 (6) によれば,世界の言語を見渡すと,3母音体系の言語には [a, i, u] が最も多く,4母音体系では [a, i, u, e] が,5母音体系では [a, i, u, e, o] が最も多いという.つまり,類型論的にいって,母音の有標性 (markedness) は,低い方から高い方へ [a, i, u] → [e] → [o] という順序のようなのである.
 子音にも同様の有標性の序列がある.窪薗 (9) は,類型論のみならず言語習得の早さも念頭におきつつ,無標な子音と有標な子音の序列を次のように与えている.以下で A > B は,A が B よりも相対的に無標であることを示す.

11 [world_englishes][typology][variety]

左欄の "No." は調査上の整理番号,右欄の "AR" は "attestation rate" を指す.

#4692. 類型論の3つの問題,および類型論と言語変化の関係について [typology][diachrony][language_change][how_and_why]

 類型論 (typology) は,通言語的にみられる言語普遍性や普遍的傾向を扱う分野である.類型論が研究対象とする分野は多岐にわたるが,同分野の入門書を著わした Whaley (28) は3つの点を指摘している.

The starting point for all typology is the presupposition that there are recurrent structural patterns across languages that are not random or accidental. These patterns can be described in statements called language universals.
Once one grants this simple assumption, myriad questions arise. . . . [T]ypologists explore both absolute properties of language and probabilistic properties. In addition, they are concerned with the connections between two or more properties.
A second key question about universals is "How are they determined?" . . . . For now, it is sufficient to say that this question has become central to typology in the past few decades, and its answer has profound implications, particularly for universals that are based on statistical probability.
The final basic question that concerns modern typology is "How are universals explained?" A protracted debate over issues of explanation has been occurring since the 1950s. The most acrimonious elements of the debate have concerned the relationship between diachrony and synchrony (i.e., to what degree does an explanation require reference to past stages of a language?) and the need to go outside the language system itself in forming satisfying explanations . . . .

 ここに挙げられている類型論上の3つの関心は,それぞれ類型論上の特徴に関する What, How, Why の問いととらえてよいだろう.
 歴史言語学の立場からは,とりわけ3つめの Why の問題が,通時態が関わってくる点で重要である.類型論と言語変化の関係を巡る問題について,Whaley (25--26) の説明を聞こう.

Another characteristic trait of modern typology that is represented well in Greenberg's work is a focus on the ways that language changes through time . . . . Greenberg's interest in diachrony was in many ways a throwback to the earlier days of typology in which historical-comparative linguistics predominated. The uniqueness of Greenberg's work, however, was in his use of language change as an explanation for language universals. The basic insight is the following: Because the form that a language takes at any given point in time results from alterations that have occurred to a previous stage of the language, one should expect to find some explanations for (or exceptions to) universals by examining the processes of language change. In other words, many currently existing properties of a language can be accounted for in terms of past properties of the language.

 類型論という基本的には共時的な視点をとっている巨大な分野に,さらに通時的視点を投入するとなると,なかなか壮大な議論になっていきそうだ.

#4691. 2重否定にダメだしする標準英語は意外と少数派である [prescriptivism][prescriptive_grammar][negative][double_negative][world_englishes][world_languages][typology]

 2重否定 (double_negative) については,一昨日開設した YouTube の「井上逸兵・堀田隆一英語学言語学チャンネル」の初回となった「英語学」ってなに?--むずかしい「英語」を「学」ぶわけではありません!!でも少し話題に取り上げた.
具体的にいえば,I don't have any money. あるいは I have no money. の意味で,I don't have no money.

Yes, and no people didn't trouble about gas stoves then. (Southeast of England)
・ We didn't have no use for it noways. (Appalachian English)

 また,歴史的にも中英語や近代英語ではごく普通の統語現象だった.初期近代英語からの例として,Siemund (620) が引いている例を1つ挙げる.

・ I thinke ye weare never yet in no grownd of mine, and I never say no man naye.

Another line of research departs from the observation that World Englishes (or varieties of English) frequently exhibit identical, or at least similar, non-standard morpho-syntactic phenomena, with common ancestors of these phenomena being difficult to reconstruct in the historical dialects of the British Isles. Such observation have led to the coinage of the label 'angloversals' (Mair 2003). Another notion used with a similar extension is 'vernacular universals' (Chambers 2001, 2003, 2004).
Chambers defines vernacular universals as 'a small number of phonological and grammatical processes [that] recur in vernaculars wherever they are spoken' and views them as inherent features of unmonitored speech coming about as a result of the workings of the human language faculty (Chambers 2004: 128--29).

 BilingualUnilingual
ExolingualInteraction among speakers with different languagesInteraction between native and non-native speakers of the same language
EndolingualInteraction among bilingualsInteraction among monolinguals

言語接触 (contact) の研究で,近年もっとも影響力をもった著書といえば Thomason and Kaufman の Language Contact, Creolization, and Genetic Linguistics (1988) だろう.

It has frequently been observed that there is a correlation between the presence of case marking on noun phrases for the subject-object distinction and flexible word order and this would appear to hold true. From the work of Greenberg it would also appear that there is a tendency for languages that mark the subject-object distinction on noun phrases to have a basic order of subject-object-verb (SOV), and conversely a tendency for languages lacking such a distinction to have the order subject-verb-object (SVO) . . . . The following figures are based on a sample of 100 languages. They show the relationship between case and marking for the 85 languages in the sample that exhibit one of the more commonly attested basic word orders. The notation [+ case] in this context means having some kind of marking, including appositions, on noun phrases to mark the subject-object distinction . . . .

VSO[+ case]3SVO[+ case]9SOV[+ case]34
[- case]6[- case]26[- case]7

The SVO 'caseless' languages are concentrated in western Europe (e.g. English), southern Africa (e.g. Swahili) and east and southeast Asia (e.g. Chinese and Vietnamese).

He opened the door. The door opened.

Ergative systems are often considered rare and remote, but in fact they make up at least twenty per cent of the world's languages. Ergative systems are to be found in all families of the Caucasian phylum, among the Tibeto-Burman languages, in Austronesian, in most Australian languages, in some languages of the Papuan families, in Zoque and the Mayan languages of Central America and in a number of language families in South America: Jé, Arawak, Tupí-Guaraní, Panoan, Tacanan, Chibchan and Carib. Outside these phyla and families where ergative systems of marking are common, ergativity is also to be found in some other languages including Basque, Hurrian and a number of other extinct languages of the Near East, Burushaski (Kashmir, Tibet), Eskimo, Chukch, and Tsimshian and Chinook (these last two being Penutian languages of British Columbia).

Traditionally, the history of English grammar has been described in terms of the shift from synthesis to analysis, i.e. from a language which expresses the relationship between words by means of inflexional endings joined to lexical stems to one which maps such relationships by means of function-words such as prepositions. This broad characterization, of course, needs considerable nuancing, and can better be expressed as a comparatively short shift along a cline. Old English, in comparison with Present-day English, is comparatively synthetic, but nowhere near as synthetic as (say) non-Indo-European languages such as Present-day Finnish or Zulu, older Indo-European languages such as classical Latin --- or even earlier manifestations of Germanic such as 4th-century Gothic, which, unlike OE, regularly distinguished nominative and accusative plural forms of the noun; cf. OE hlāfas 'loaves' (both NOM and ACC), Go. hláibōs (NOM), hláibans (ACC). Present-day English is comparatively analytic, but not as analytic as (say) Present-day Mandarin Chinese; a 21st-century English-speaker still marks person, number and case, and sustains grammatical cohesion, with concord between verbal and pronominal inflexions, for instance, e.g. I love bananas beside she hates bananas.

 「総合から分析へ」はキャッチフレーズとしてはとても良いが,上記の点に注意しつつ相対的に理解しておく必要がある.
