(A-curve) [lexical_diffusion][zipfs_law][frequency][statistics][language_change][uniformitarian_principle]

後者は "few realizations that occur very frequently and many realizations that occur infrequently" (384) ということである.

Our second observation, about the distribution of variants according to Zipf's Law, has the strongest set of implications for historical study of language. If we take the A-curve as the model for the frequency distribution of variants for any linguistic feature of interest to us at any moment in time, then we should expect that any particular variant of interest to us will have a particular rank along the A-curve. Therefore, one of the things that we should try to do for any given moment in time is to determine the place of our variant of interest on the curve; we need to know whether it is the most frequent variant in the set of possible realizations (at the top of the curve), or an infrequent variant (in the tail of the curve). Then, for any subsequent moment in time, we can again try to determine the location of our variant of interest along the curve, and so try to make a statement about whether the location of the variant has changed in the intervening time (see Figure 14). Since we hypothesize that an A-curve will exist for every feature at any moment in time (i.e., that language will not suddenly become invariant), we can define the notion "linguistic change" itself as the change in the location of the target variant at different heights along the curve. If a particular variant occurs at a higher place on the curve than it did before, it has become more frequent and so we can say that the direction of change for that variant is positive; if a variant occurs at a lower place on the curve than it did before, it has become less frequent and the direction of change is negative.

#1768. Historical Paradox と Uniformitarian Principle [uniformitarian_principle][methodology]

The task of historical linguistics is to explain the differences between the past and the present; but to the extent that the past was different from the present, there is no way of knowing how different it was.

. . . [the uniformitarian principle] is in fact a necessary consequence of the fundamental paradox of historical linguistics, not a solution to that paradox. If the uniformitarian principle is applied as if it were such a solution, rather than a working assumption, it can actually conceal the extent of the errors that are the result of real differences between past and present.
Solutions to the Historical Paradox must be analogous to solutions to the Observer's Paradox. Particular problems must be approached from several different directions, by different methods with complementary sources of error. The solution to the problem can then be located somewhere between the answers given by the different methods. In this way, we can know the limits of the errors introduced by the Historical Paradox, even if we cannot eliminate them entirely. (Labov 24--25)

#1588. The Uniformitarian Principle (3) [methodology][uniformitarian_principle]

The Uniformitarian Principle」 ([2010-11-04-1]) と「#1186. The Uniformitarian Principle (2)」 ([2012-07-26-1]) を参照).
例えば,[2010-11-04-1]の記事で挙げた引用に従えば,Romaine は force の斉一性を,Lass は state の斉一性を念頭においている(もっとも,Lass は "linguistic state of affairs (structure, inventory, process, etc.)"

In geology, certain processes can be observed as ongoing during recorded history, such as the formation of mountains and their subsequent erosion by wind and rain. The uniformitarian hypothesis, which did so much to raise geology to its present scientific level, assumes that these same processes also characterised the Earth's prehistory. In other words, in order to explain earlier geological formations, we are not permitted to appeal to processes other than those that have characterised the more recent period. But it is important to realise that what is constrained by the uniformitarian hypothesis is the set of processes that have formed the earth, not the set of states that are separated by these processes. Thus, one could imagine starting from a state that is radically different from the present state of the Earth, say a perfectly smooth spherical or near-spherical object, and then initiate operation of the processes of mountain formation and erosion to produce something like the present-day Earth. In other words, the typological consistency implied by the uniformitarian hypothesis in geology is a typological consistency of processes, not a typological consistency of states. . . . / We may now apply this historically more appropriate concept of uniformitarianism, from the viewpoint of the philosophy of science, to the kind of linguistic reconstruction that we proposed . . . . It now becomes clear that our reconstruction is indeed compatible with this conception of the uniformitarian hypothesis. We propose no processes that are not attested in the historical period. . . . No new types of processes are proposed. However, the operation of these processes can take us from an earlier stage that is typologically different from attested languages to a later stage that is compatible with our knowledge of attested language states.

[gvs][phonetics][vowel][diphthong][uniformitarian_principle]

Stockwell and Minkova は,英語の諸変種で現在進行中のいくつかの母音推移 (the New York City Shift, the Northern American Cities Shift, the Popular London and Cockney Shift, the Southern States Shift) を調査し,in-gliding な2重母音は上昇し,out-gliding な2重母音は下降する傾向があると結論した (97) .

In order for an analysis of a historical English shift to be supported by the evidence of modern English chain shifts, it appears, from the above Modern English dialect evidence and the on-going shifts, that:

  a. nuclei which move upward have centering glides, and
  b. nuclei which move downward have homorganic out-glides, front with front vowels and back with back vowels.

しかし,Stockwell and Minkova は,Uniformitarian Principle (斉一論)を引き合いに出しながら,現在進行中の2重母音推移の傾向に鑑み,件の大母音推移の入力も本当は長母音ではなく2重母音だったのではないかと,驚くような revisionist な提案を,さりげに,さりげなく括弧内でしているのである."no one has proved that the shifting nuclei were long pure vowels, and indeed the very fact of their shifting suggests that they were not" (97).

Assuming that the ultimate target of a centering diphthong is a point maximally distanced from the out-glide end-points, i.e. the -y and -w of the peripheral diphthongs, namely some kind of low central [a] or [ɑ], we can argue that the reason that in-gliding diphthongs raise the first element is perceptual optimization: [æə] is worse than [ɛə] which is worse than [ɪə]. In the back, [ɒə] is worse than [ɔə] which is worse than [ɔ̝ə] which is worse than [ʊə]. Put another way, Labov has the motivations for chain-shifting in English (and indeed throughout Germanic) backwards: it is not that peripheral vowels rise, because there is no phonetic motivation for that claim to be true; rather, it is that the elements of in-gliding diphthongs distance themselves from each other for optimal perception, which raises the first element.

#1282. コセリウによる3種類の異なる言語変化の原因 [language_change][causation][invisible_hand][drift][typology][uniformitarian_principle][grammaticalisation]

Coseriu, E. (Sincronía, Diacronía e Historia. Investigaciones y estudios.
1つ目は "the rational problem of why languages changes of necessity" である.
2つ目は "the general problem of conditions under which particular changes usually appear in languages" である.
3つ目は "the historical problem of accounting for concrete changes that have taken place" である.

[P]ast states of language are attested in writing, rather than in speech . . . [W]ritten language tends to be message-oriented and is deprived of the social and situational contexts in which speech events occur.

[H]istorical data have been accidentally preserved and are therefore not equally representative of all aspects of the language of past states . . . . Some styles and varieties may therefore be over-represented in the data, while others are under-represented . . . . For some periods of time there may be a great deal of surviving information: for other periods there may be very little or none at all.

Labov の論文の標題 "On the Use of the Present to Explain the Past" が,この方法論を直截に物語っている.

Thames, Humber, Stour [onomastics][toponymy][celtic][uniformitarian_principle][hydronymy]

T(h)ame, Teme, Team, Tamar, Tavy) .

. . . it seems to hold pretty generally that of all classes of place-names, main river-names are the most resistant to change. In taking over a substantial body of river-names from their predecessors the Anglo-Saxons exhibited behaviour typical of immigrant populations worldwide, as Mississippi and Ohio bear witness. Yet the attitude of Anglo-Saxons to Celts, at least among their ideological leaders, at least by the end of the settlement period, was of not borrowing anything (or at least not admitting they had borrowed it). For Celts, who were certainly not autochthonous in Britain, and who are not known to have developed any colonialist ideology stronger than Vae Victis!, to have taken over no names at all from their predecessors would be preposterous. (Kitson 38)

#1186. The Uniformitarian Principle (2) [methodology][uniformitarian_principle]

uniformitarianism, Uniformitarian Principle A fundamental principle of biological, geological and linguistic sciences, which holds for linguistics that things about language that are possible today were not impossible in the past and that things that are impossible today were not possible in the past. This means that whatever is known to occur in languages today would also have been possible in earlier human languages and anything not possible in contemporary languages was equally impossible in the past, in the earlier history of any language. The Uniformitarian Principle came to linguistics from Charles Lyell's formulation of it in geology. It is valuable for reconstruction via the comparative method, where, according to the principle, nothing in reconstruction can be assumed to have been a property of some proto-language if it is not possible in known languages. #556. The Uniformitarian Principle [historiography][historical_pragmatics][uniformitarian_principle]

The working principle of sociolinguistic reconstruction must be the 'uniformitarian principle'. In other words, we accept that the linguistic forces which operate today and are observable around us are not unlike those which have operated in the past. Sociolinguistically speaking, this means that there is no reason for claiming that language did not vary in the same patterned ways in the past as it has been observed to do today. (122--23)

General Uniformity Principle
No linguistic state of affairs (structure, inventory, process, etc.) can have been the case only in the past. (28)

Uniform Probabilities Principle
The (global, cross-linguistic) likelihood of any linguistic state of affairs (structure, inventory, process, etc.) has always been roughly the same as it is now. (29)

The nature and uses of speech . . . cannot but have been essentially the same during all periods of its history . . . there is no way in which its unknown past can be investigated, except by the careful study of its living present and recorded past, and the extension and application to remote conditions of laws and principles deduced by that study. (24 as quoted in Lass 28)
