 OED によると,because, adv., conj., n. の接続詞としての第2語義の下に,(廃用となった)目的を表わす15--17世紀からの例文が4つ挙げられている.

2. With the purpose that, to the end that, in order that, so that, that. Obsolete. (Common dialect.)
1485 W. Caxton tr. Paris & Vienne (1957) 31 Tolde to hys fader..by cause he shold..doo that, whyche he wold requyre hym.
1526 Bible (Tyndale) Matt. xii. f. xvv They axed hym..because [other versions 'that'] they myght acuse him.
1628 R. Burton Anat. Melancholy (ed. 3) iii. ii. iii. 482 Annointing the doores and hinges with oile, because they shall not creake.
1656 H. More Antidote Atheism (1712) ii. ix. 67 The reason why Birds are Oviparous is because there might be more plenty of them.

#4921. Murray の英文法の9品詞論 [parts_of_speech][lowth][prescriptive_grammar][history_of_linguistics][category]

 一昨日の記事「#4919. Lowth の英文法の9品詞論」 ([2022-10-15-1]) を受けて,今回は Lindley Murray (1745--1826) の品詞論について.Murray といえば,「#2592. Lindley Murray, English Grammar」 ([2016-06-01-1]) でも取り上げた通り,Lowth などを下敷きにしつつ,18世紀規範英文法を集大成した「英文法の父」である.
1795年に English Grammar, adapted to the different classes of learners; With an Appendix, containing Rules and Observations for Promoting Perspicuity in Speaking and Writing を出版するや爆発的な人気を誇り,その売り上げは1850年までに150万部以上を記録したという.斎藤 (42) によると,English Grammar は「日本最初の本格的な英文法書」となる渋川敬直による『英文鑑(えいぶんかがみ)』 (1840--41) の底本ともなった.
Murray の英文法は Lowth などを引き継ぎ,9品詞論が基本となっている.斎藤 (45) より区分を示そう.

(1) 冠詞 (Article): Definite/Indefinite
(2) 名詞 (Substantive or Noun): Common/Proper
   数 (Number): Singular/Plural
   格 (Case): Nominative/Possessive/Objective
   性 (Gender): Masculine/Feminine/Neuter
(3) 形容詞 (Adjective)
   比較 (Comparison): Positive/Comparative/Superlative
(4) 代名詞 (Pronoun): Personal※1/Relative※2/Adjective※3
   ※1 人称 (Person): First/Second/Third
   ※2 Interrogative は,Relative pronoun の一部
   ※3 Adjective: Possessive/Distributive/Demonstrative/Indefinite
(5) 動詞 (Verb): Active (Transitive)/Passive/Neuter (Intransitive)
   法 (Mood or Mode):
      Indicative/Imperative/Potential/Subjunctive/Infinitive
   時制 (Tense):
      Present/Past (Imperfect)/Perfect(現在完了のこと)/Pluperfect(過去完了のこと)/First future(単純未来形のこと)/Second future(未来完了のこと)
分詞 (Participle),助動詞 (Auxiliary or helping Verbs)
   能動態・受動態 (Active voice/Passive voice)
   規則・不規則・欠如動詞 (Regular/Irregular/Defective)
(6) 副詞 (Adverb):
   Number/Order/Place/Time/Quantity/Manner or quality/Doubt/Affirmation/Negation/Interrogation/Comparison
(7) 前置詞 (Preposition)
(8) 接続詞 (Conjunction): Copulative/Disjunctive
(9) 間投詞 (interjection)

 同じ9品詞論でも Lowth の区分との間に若干の差異がある.例えば名詞の格のカテゴリーについて,Murray は Lowth の Nominative/Possessive に加えて Objective も含めている.また,分詞について Lowth は法のカテゴリーに含めているが,Murray は動詞の1形式とみている.
 全体として Murray の9品詞論は,現代的な英文法観にまた一歩近づいているということができるだろう.

#4919. Lowth の英文法の9品詞論 [parts_of_speech][lowth][prescriptive_grammar][history_of_linguistics][category]

 最も著名な18世紀の規範文法家 Robert Lowth (1710--87) とその著書 A Short Introduction to English Grammar (1762) について,hellog では「#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]) や lowth の各記事で取り上げてきた.昨日の記事「#4918. William Bullokar の8品詞論」 ([2022-10-14-1]) を受けて,Lowth の品詞論を確認しておこう.Lowth は9品詞を掲げている.以下,斎藤 (26--27) より.

(1) 冠詞 (Article): Definite/Indefinite
(2) 名詞 (Substantive, or Noun): Common/Proper
   数 (Number): Singular/Plural
   格 (Case): Nominative/Possessive
   性 (Gender): Masculine/Feminine/Neuter
(3) 代名詞 (Pronoun):
   Personal/Relative/Interrogative/Definitive/Distributive/Reciprocal
   ※ 人称 (Person): First/Second/Third
(4) 形容詞 (Adjective), (5) 副詞 (Adverb)
   比較 (Comparison): Positive/Comparative/Superlative
(6) 動詞 (Verb): Active (Transitive)/Passive/Neuter (Intransitive)
   法 (Mode): Indicative/Imperative/Subjunctive/Infinitive/Participle
   時制 (Tense):
      Present/Past/Future
      Present Imperfect/Present Perfect/Past Imperfect
      Past Perfect/Future Imperfect/Future Perfect
      ※ 'Imperfect' は,現代の「進行形」に相当
   助動詞 (Auxiliary),規則・不規則動詞 (Regular/Irregular)
   欠如動詞 (Defective)
(7) 前置詞 (Preposition)
(8) 接続詞 (Conjunction): Copulative/Disjunctive

 ・ 「#664. littera, figura, potestas」 ([2011-02-20-1])
 ・ 「#892. 文法の父 Dionysius Thrax の形態論」 ([2011-10-06-1])

#4753. 「英文法」は250年ほど前に規範的に作り上げられた! [prescriptivism][prescriptive_grammar][lmode][lowth][priestley][youtube][voicy]

A Short Introduction to English Grammar (1762) で強い規範的な態度を示したのに対して,ライバル関係にあった Joseph Priestley (1733--1804) は The Rudiments of English Grammar; Adapted to the Use of Schools with Observations on Style

(2) [verb][prescriptive_grammar][conjugation][preterite][participle][lowth]

Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1])).次のように Pope からの「誤用」例を示しつつ,明らかに読者に注意喚起をしている.

This Neuter Verb is frequently confounded with the Verb Active to lay, [that is, to put or place;] which is Regular, and in the Past Time and Participle layed or laid.
"For him, thro' hostile camps I bent my way,
         For him, thus prostrate at thy feet I lay;
Large gifts proportion'd to thy wrath I bear." Pope, Iliad xxiv. 622.
Here lay is evidently used for the present time, instead of lie.

(1) [verb][prescriptive_grammar][conjugation][preterite][participle][taboo][complaint_tradition][lowth]

Verbs. In intransitive uses, coinciding with or resembling those of lie, except in certain nautical expressions, lay 'is only dialectal or an illiterate substitute for lie' (OED). Its identity of form with the past tense of lie no doubt largely accounts for the confusion. In the 17c. and 18c. the alternation of lay and lie seems not to have been regarded as a solecism. Nowadays confusion of the two is taken to be certain evidence of imperfect education or is accepted in regional speech as being a deep-rooted survival from an earlier period. . . .
The paradigm is merciless, admitting no exceptions in standard English. Incorrect uses: She layed hands on people and everybody layed hands on each other and everybody spoke in tongues---T. Parks, 1985 (read laid); Laying back some distance from the road . . . it was built in 1770 in the Italian style---Fulham Times, 1987 (read lying); Where's the glory in . . . leaving people out with their medals all brushed up laying under the rubble, dying for the glory of the revolution?--New Musical Express, 1988 (read lying); We are going to lay under the stars by the sea---Sun, 1990 (read lie); They may have lost the last fight [sc. the final of a ruby tournament], but how narrow it was, and they can still be proud of all the battle honours that will lay for ever in their cathedral in Twickenham--(sport column in) Observer, 1991 (read lie).

両動詞の混同がいかにタブー的であるかは,"The paradigm is merciless, admitting no exceptions in standard English." という1文によって鮮やかに示されている.現代に至るまで,その「誤用」は跡を絶たないようだ.
 このタブーの伝統を創始したのは,Robert Lowth (1710--87) を始めとする18世紀の規範主義文法家といわれる(cf. 「#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]),「#3036.

A Short Introduction to English Grammar において,たいへんおもしろい見解を述べている.すっかり感心してしまったので,すべて引用しておきたい (27--28) .

The English Language, with singular propriety, following nature alone, applies the distinction of Masculine and Feminine only to the names of Animals; all the rest are Neuter: except when, by a Poetical or Rhetorical fiction, things inanimate and Qualities are exhibited as Person, and consequently become either Male or Female. And this gives the English an advantage above most other languages in the Poetical and Rhetorical Style: for when Nouns naturally Neuter are converted into Masculine and Feminine [3], the Personification is more distinctly and forcibly marked.

   [3] "At his command th'uprooted hills retir'd
Each to his place: they heard his voice and went
    (18) Obsequious: Heaven his wonted face renew'd,
And with fresh flowrets hill and valley smil'd." Milton, P. L. B. vi.
"Was I deceiv'd or did a sable cloud
Turn forth her silver lining on the Night?" Milton, Comus.
"Of Law no less can be acknowledged, than that her seat is the bosom of God; her voice, the harmony of the world. All things in heaven and earth do her homage; the very least, as feeling her care; and the greatest, as not exempted from her power." Hooker, B. i. 16. "Go to your Natural Religion: lay before her Mahomet and his disciples, arrayed in armour and in blood:---shew her the cities which he set in flames; the countries which he ravaged:---when she has viewed him in this scene, carry her into his retirements; shew her the Prophet's chamber, his concubines and his wives:---when she is tired with this prospect, then shew her the Blessed Jesus---" See the whole passage in the conclusion of Bp. Sherlock's 9th Sermon, vol. i.
Of these beautiful passages we may observe, that as in the English if you put it and its instead of his, she, her, you confound and destroy the images, and reduce, what was before highly Poetical and Rhetorical, to mere prose and common discourse; so if you render them into another language, Greek, Latin, French, Italian, or German; in which Hill, Heave, Cloud, Law, Religion, are constantly Masculine, or Feminine, or Neuter, respectively; you make the images obscure and doubtful, and in proportion diminish their beauty. This excellent remark is Mr. Harris's , HERMES, p. 58.

 上記は,このたび Lowth を漫然と読みながら気付いたポイントなのだが,やはり一家言ある文法家のセンスというのは,ときにまばゆく鋭い.言語における文法的性と自然的性の議論に,新鮮な光を投げかけてくれた.

#3619. Lowth がダメ出しした2重比較級と過剰最上級 [comparison][double_comparative][superlative][lowth][prescriptive_grammar][adjective]

 「#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]) や「#3036. Lowth の禁じた語法・用法」 ([2017-08-19-1]) で紹介したように,規範文法家の第一人者 Robert Lowth による1762年の文法書には様々な語法の禁止条項がみえるが,連日取り上げている形容詞の比較についても,2重比較級 (double_comparative) と,意味的に過剰な最上級へのダメ出しがなされている.Lowth (34--35) より関連箇所を抜き出そう.

[4] Double Comparatives and Superlatives are improper.

"The Duke of Milan, / And his more braver Daughter could controul thee." "After the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee." Shakespeare, Tempest. Acts xxvi. 5. So likewise Adjectives, that have in themselves a Superlative signification, admit not properly the Superlative form superadded: "Whosoever of you will be chiefest, shall be servant of all." Mark x. 44. "One of the first and chiefest instances of prudence." Atterbury, Serm. IV. "While the extremest parts of the earth were meditating a submission." Ibid. I. 4.

"But first and chiefest with thee bring
Him, that you soars on golden wing,
Guiding the fiery-wheeled throne,
The Cherub Contemplation." Milton, Il Penseroso.
"That on the sea's extremest border stood." Addison, Travels.

But poetry is in possession of these two improper Superlatives, and may be indulged in the use of them.
. . . .
[5] "Lesser, says Mr. Johnson, is a barbarous corruption of Less, formed by the vulgar from the habit of terminating comparisons in er."
"Attend to what a lesser Muse indites." Addison.
Worser sounds much more barbarous, only because it has not been so frequently used:

"Chang'd to a worser shape thou canst not be." Shakespeare, 1 Hen. VI.
"A dreadful quiet felt, and worser far / Than arms, a sullen interval of war." Dryden.

[prescriptive_grammar][lowth]

Robert Lowth の後世への影響力は計り知れない.伝統的な解釈では,A Short Introduction to English Grammar
A Short Introduction to English Grammar の初版に対して施した訂正を,Lowth 自身が第2版 (1763) のために受け入れたという事実がある.さらに,初版の序文にて Lowth は読者に改善のための情報提供を直々に呼びかけているのだ.

If those, who are qualified to judge of such matters, and do not look upon them as beneath their notice, shall so far approve of it, as to think it worth a revisal, and capable of being improved into something really useful; their remarks and assistance, communicated through the hands of the Bookseller, shall be received with all proper deference and acknowledgement. (1762: xv; quoted in Tieken-Boon van Ostade, 543.)

 もっとも,この序文の文句はある種の社交辞令かもしれないが.いずれにせよ,Lowth のイメージは現代の規範文法を巡る言説のなかで作り上げられ,多かれ少なかれ誇張されてきたものであることは確かだろう.

#2815. 18世紀の規範主義の再評価について (1) [prescriptive_grammar][prescriptivism][priestley][lowth][lmode][swift]

[E]ighteenth-century grammarians had a range of motives for writing their grammars, and . . . these and later grammars, far from being uniformly 'prescriptive', would be better described as occupying different points on a prescriptive-descriptive continuum.

 英語に関する著作をものした諸家は,各々の政治的スタンスから英語について発言していた.例えば,Swift は Ann 女王と君主制を守ろうとする保守主義から物を申し,行動もしていた.また,1707年の大ブリテン連合王国の成立を受けて,南部の標準的な英語を正しい英語と定め,スコットランド人などにそれを教育する必要性も感じられていた.規範主義の背景には,政治的思惑があったのである (Beal 97) .

Whilst it is perfectly valid to see eighteenth- and nineteenth-century grammars both as the necessary agents of codification and as self-help guides for the aspiring middle classes, it cannot be denied that many of the authors of these works were politically and/or ideologically motivated.

 Beal (111) は,しばしば対立させられる Lowth と Priestley にも言及し,両者の違いは力点の違い(含意として政治的スタンスの違い)であるとしている.

These two grammarians [= Lowth and Priestley] were writing within a year of each other, so any norms of usage to which they refer must have been the same. Although both used a classical system of parts of speech, neither is influenced by Latin here: they both describe preposition-stranding as a naturally occurring feature of English, more suited to informal usage. The difference between Lowth and Priestley is one of emphasis only, far from the prescriptive-descriptive polarization which we have been led to expect.

(2) [lowth][priestley][webster][prescriptive_grammar][academy]

「#2778. Joseph Priestley --- 慣用重視を貫いた文法家」 ([2016-12-04-1]) の第2弾.先の記事で述べたように,Rudiments of English Grammar の初版は1761年に出版された.その約1ヶ月後に Lowth の A Short Introduction to English Grammar が出版され,1762年には James Buchanan の The British Grammar が,1763年には John Ash の Grammatical Institutes が,それぞれ立て続けに出版されている.また,多少の時間を経て,1784年には Noah Webster の A Grammatical Institute of the English Language

A Short Introduction to English Grammar

It must be allowed, that the custom of speaking is the original and only just standard of any language. We see, in all grammars, that this is sufficient to establish a rule, even contrary to the strongest analogies of the language with itself. Must not this custom, therefore, be allowed to have some weight, in favour of those forms of speech, to which our best writers and speakers seem evidently prone . . . ?" (qtd. from Baugh and Cable 277)

The best and the most numerous authorities have been carefully followed. Where they have been contradictory, recourse hath been had to analogy, as the last resource. If this should decide for neither of two contrary practices, the thing must remain undecided, till all-governing custom shall declare in favour of the one or the other. (qtd. from Baugh and Cable 277)

 また,Priestley は同じ Rudiments のなかで,アカデミーについても発言しており,そのような機関を設けるよりは慣用に従うほうが妥当だもと述べている.

As to a public Academy, invested with authority to ascertain the use of words, which is a project that some persons are very sanguine in their expectations from, I think it not only unsuitable to the genius of a free nation, but in itself ill calculated to reform and fix a language. We need make no doubt but that the best forms of speech will, in time, establish themselves by their own superior excellence: and, in all controversies, it is better to wait the decisions of time, which are slow and sure, than to take those of synods, which are often hasty and injudicious. (qtd. from Baugh and Cable 264)

 1762年の Theory of Language でも,同趣旨が繰り返される.

In modern and living languages, it is absurd to pretend to set up the compositions of any person or persons whatsoever as the standard of writing, or their conversation as the invariable rule of speaking. With respect to custom, laws, and every thing that is changeable, the body of a people, who, in this respect, cannot but be free, will certainly assert their liberty, in making what innovations they judge to be expedient and useful. The general prevailing custom, whatever it happen to be, can be the only standard for the time that it prevails. (qtd. from Baugh and Cable 277)

 Priestley の言語観には,実に先進的で現代的な響きが感じられる.この言語観は,酸素を発見した化学者としての Priestley の名言の1つ「ひとつの発見をなしとげると,必ずそれまで考えつきもしなかった別の不完全な知識を得ることになる……」(すなわち,知識は常に発展する)とも共鳴しているように思われる.

#2772. 標準化と規範化の試みは,語彙→文法→発音の順序で (1) [standardisation][prescriptivism][prescriptive_grammar][emode][pronunciation][orthoepy][dictionary][lexicography][rp][johnson][lowth][orthoepy][orthography][walker]

Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]) や「#2592.
John Walker の A Critical Pronouncing Dictionary (1791)」 ([2013-04-22-1]) である.
 「正しい発音」の主張がなされるようになったのが,18世紀後半という比較的遅い時期だったことについて,Baugh and Cable (306) は次のように述べている.

The first century and a half of English lexicography including Johnson's Dictionary of 1755, paid little attention to pronunciation, Johnson marking only the main stress in words. However, during the second half of the eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century, a tradition of pronouncing dictionaries flourished, with systems of diacritics indicating the length and quality of vowels and what were considered the proper consonants. Although the ostensible purpose of these guides was to eliminate linguistic bias by making the approved pronunciation available to all, the actual effect was the opposite: "good" and "bad" pronunciations were codified, and speakers of English who were not born into the right families or did not have access to elocutionary instruction suffered linguistic scorn all the more.

 では,近現代英語の標準化と規範化の試みが,語彙(綴字を含む)→文法→発音という順序で進んでいったのはなぜだろうか.これについては明日の記事で.

#2759. Swift によるアカデミー設立案が通らなかった理由 [swift][prescriptivism][academy][lowth][johnson]

Swift による A Proposal for Correcting, Improving and Ascertaining the English Tongue

Apparently the only dissenting voice was that of John Oldmixon, who, in the same year that Swift's Proposal appeared, published Reflections on Dr. Swift's Letter to the Earl of Oxford, about the English Tongue. It was a violent Whig attack inspired by purely political motives. He says, "I do here in the Name of all the Whigs, protest against all and everything done or to be done in it, by him or in his Name." Much in the thirty-five pages is a personal attack on Swift, in which he quotes passages from the Tale of a Tub as examples of vulgar English, to show that Swift was no fit person to suggest standards for the language. And he ridicules the idea that anything can be done to prevent languages from changing. "I should rejoice with him, if a way could be found out to fix our Language for ever, that like the Spanish cloak, it might always be in Fashion." But such a thing is impossible.
Oldmixon's attack was not directed against the idea of an academy. He approves of the design, "which must be own'd to be very good in itself." Yet nothing came of Swift's Proposal. The explanation of its failure in the Dublin edition is probably correct; at least it represented contemporary opinion. "It is well known," it says, "that if the Queen had lived a year or two longer, this proposal would, in all probability, have taken effect. For the Lord Treasurer had already nominated several persons without distinction of quality or party, who were to compose a society for the purposes mentioned by the author; and resolved to use his credit with her majesty, that a fund should be applied to support the expense of a large room, where the society should meet, and for other incidents. But this scheme fell to the ground, partly by the dissensions among the great men at court; but chiefly by the lamented death of that glorious princess."

Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]), 「#1421. Johnson の言語観」 ([2013-03-18-1]), 「#141. 18世紀の規範は理性か慣用か」 ([2009-09-15-1])) .イギリスは,アカデミーを作る意志がなかったわけではなく,半ば歴史の偶然で作るに至らなかった,と評価するのが適切だろう.

#2592. Lindley Murray, English Grammar [prescriptive_grammar][history_of_linguistics][lowth][priestley]

先日,1918世紀半ばの規範英文法書のベストセラー「#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1])
English Grammar, adapted to the different classes of learners; With an Appendix, containing Rules and Observations for Promoting Perspicuity in Speaking and Writing (1795) である.
 English Grammar

#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar [prescriptive_grammar][lowth][history_of_linguistics][preposition_stranding][syntax]

規範主義が席巻した18世紀の前半における最も重要な文法家は,オックスフォードの詩学教授およびロンドンの主教も務めた聖職者 Robert Lowth (1710--87) である.1755年に Samuel Johnson が後に規範的とされる辞書を世に出した7年後の1762年に,今度は Lowth が一世を風靡することになる規範英文法書 Short Introduction to English Grammar: with Critical Notes

The Preposition is often separated from the Relative which it governs, and joined to the Verb at the end of the Sentence, or of some member of it: as, "Horace is an author, whom I am much delighted with." . . . . This is an Idiom which our language is strongly inclined to; it prevails in common conversation, and suits very well with the familiar style in writing; but the placing of the Preposition before the Relative is more graceful, as well as more perspicuous; and agrees much better with the solemn and elevated Style.

おもしろいことに,上の引用では Lowth 自身が "an Idiom which our language is strongly inclined to" と前置詞残置を用いているが,これは不用意というよりは,ある種の冗談かもしれない.いずれにせよ,この文法書ではこのような規範主義的な主張が繰り返し現われるのである.
Lowth がこの文法項目を禁止する口調はそれほど厳しいものではない.しかし,Lowth を下敷きにした後世の文法家はこの禁止を一般規則化して,より強く主張するようになった.いつしか文法家は "Never end a sentence with a preposition." と強い口調で言うようになったのである.
この規則に対しておおいに反感を抱いた有名人に Winston Churchill がいる.Churchill が皮肉交じりに "(this was a regulated English) 'up with which we will not put'" と述べたことは,よく知られている (Crystal 51) .
