#3594. Oppenheimer によれば英語の起源は紀元前に遡る!? [history][germanic][anglo-saxon][historiography]

What about the possibility that English was spoken as some form closer to Norse or even a separate Germanic branch in one or both of these two Englands before the Anglo-Saxons arrived? I am sure this will be the most contentious aspect of my argument, but that does not deter me from suggesting it. The various academics I have quoted or cited on this issue are united on one aspect of the oldest recorded English, whether written in runes or Roman script. This is the strong, unexplained Norse influence, both culturally and linguistically, before the Vikings came on the scene. But the evidence against a Dark Ages root of English goes deeper than that. In terms of vocabulary, English is nowhere near any of the West Germanic languages it has traditionally been associated with. It actually roots closer to Scandinavian than to Beowulf, the earliest 'Old English' poem and probably written in the elite court of the Swedish Wuffing dynasty of East Anglia. One study suggests that, on this lexical evidence, English forms a fourth Germanic branch dating 'to before AD 350 and probably after 3600 BC'.

#3593. アングロサクソンは本当にケルトを一掃したのか? [history][celtic][anglo-saxon][celtic][historiography][demography][genetics]

migrationism
The view that major cultural changes in the past were caused by movements of people from one region to another carrying their culture with them. It has displaced the earlier and more warlike term invasionism, but is itself out of archaeological favour.

diffusionism
Cultural diffusion is the movement of cultural ideas and artefacts among societies . . . . The view that major cultural innovations in the past were initiated at a single time and place (e.g. Egypt), diffusing from one society to all others, is an extreme version of the general diffusionist view --- which is that, in general, diffusion of ideas such as farming is more likely than multiple independent innovations.

 印欧諸語の拡散様式ついて上記の論争があるのと同様に,アングロサクソンのイングランド征服についても似たような論争がある.一般的にいわれる,アングロサクソンの征服によって先住民族ケルト人が(ほぼ完全に)征服されたという説を巡っての論争だ.これについては明日の記事で.

#3591. ネアンデルタール人は言葉を話したか? [anthropology][homo_sapiens][origin_of_language][evolution]

#3590. 「ことば遊び」と言語学 [linguistics][communication][history_of_linguistics][word_play]

retrograde, reciprocall, incubus, †glibbery, †lubricall, defunct, †magnificate, spurious, †snotteries, chilblaind, clumsie, barmy, froth, puffy, inflate, †turgidous, ventosity, oblatrant, †obcaecate, furibund, fatuate, strenuous, conscious, prorumped, clutch, tropological, anagogical, loquacious, pinnosity, †obstupefact

 OED では,pinnosity を除くすべての単語が見出し語として立てられている.しかし,このなかには Jonson の劇でしか使われていない1回きりの単語も含まれている.現代でも普通に通用するものもあるにはあるが,確かに立て続けに吐かれてはかなわない単語ばかりである.典型的なインク壺語のリストとして使えそうだ.

#3588. -o で終わる名詞の複数形語尾 --- pianospotatoes か? [plural][spelling][corpus]

 -o で終わる加算名詞から規則的な複数形を作る場合に,綴字上 -s のみを付す pianos タイプと,-es とする potatoes タイプが区別される.
 LGSWE (285) は,LGSWE Corpus によって両タイプの分布を調査した.両語尾の間で揺れを示すものもあるので,80%以上の生起率を基準にして,いずれかのタイプかに割り振ったリストである.別途『徹底例解ロイヤル英文法』から補った類例( * を付した)も含めつつ,以下に列挙しよう.

・ pianos タイプ: *autos, avocados, casinos, commandos, concertos, discos, *dynamos, embryos, Eskimos, *ghettos, jumbos, kilos, memos, pesos, photos, pianos, portfolios, radios, scenarios, shampoos, solos, stereos, studios, taboos, tacos, tattoos, *torsos, trios, twos, videos, weirdos, zeros, zoos

・ potatoes タイプ: buffaloes, cargoes, echoes, heroes, mangoes, mosquitoes, mottoes, negroes, potatoes, tomatoes, tornadoes, torpedoes, vetoes, volcanoes

 また,-s と -es の間で揺れを示す名詞も少なくない.『徹底例解ロイヤル英文法』では,例として banjo(e)s, buffalo(e)s, cargo(e)s, fresco(e)s, ghetto(e)s, grotto(e)s, halo(e)s, mango(e)s, manifesto(e)s, mosquito(e)s, motto(e)s, tornado(e)s, volcano(e)s, zero(e)s が挙げられている.

英語の anger management は,COBUILD English Dictionary によると "a set of guidelines that are designed to help people control their anger."

Of Anger

TO SEEK to extinguish anger utterly, is but a bravery of the Stoics. We have better oracles: Be angry, but sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your anger. Anger must be limited and confined, both in race and in time. We will first speak how the natural inclination and habit to be angry, may be attempted and calmed. Secondly, how the particular motions of anger may be repressed, or at least refrained from doing mischief. Thirdly, how to raise anger, or appease anger in another.

For the first; there is no other way but to meditate, and ruminate well upon the effects of anger, how it troubles man's life. And the best time to do this, is to look back upon anger, when the fit is thoroughly over. Seneca saith well, That anger is like ruin, which breaks itself upon that it falls. The Scripture exhorteth us to possess our souls in patience. Whosoever is out of patience, is out of possession of his soul. Men must not turn bees;

. . . animasuque in vulnere ponunt.

Anger is certainly a kind of baseness; as it appears well in the weakness of those subjects in whom it reigns; children, women, old folks, sick folks. Only men must beware, that they carry their anger rather with scorn, than with fear; so that they may seem rather to be above the injury, than below it; which is a thing easily done, if a man will give law to himself in it.

For the second point; the causes and motives of anger, are chiefly three. First, to be too sensible of hurt; for no man is angry, that feels not himself hurt; and therefore tender and delicate persons must needs be oft angry; they have so many things to trouble them, which more robust natures have little sense of. The next is, the apprehension and construction of the injury offered, to be, in the circumstances thereof, full of contempt: for contempt is that, which putteth an edge upon anger, as much or more than the hurt itself.
And therefore, when men are ingenious in picking out circumstances of contempt, they do kindle their anger much. Lastly, opinion of the touch of a man's reputation, doth multiply and sharpen anger. Wherein the remedy is, that a man should have, as Consalvo was wont to say, telam honoris crassiorem. But in all refrainings of anger, it is the best remedy to win time; and to make a man's self believe, that the opportunity of his revenge is not yet come, but that he foresees a time for it; and so to still himself in the meantime, and reserve it.

To contain anger from mischief, though it take hold of a man, there be two things, whereof you must have special caution. The one, of extreme bitterness of words, especially if they be aculeate and proper, for cummunia maledicta are nothing so much; and again, that in anger a man reveal no secrets; for that, makes him not fit for society. The other, that you do not peremptorily break off, in any business, in a fit of anger; but howsoever you show bitterness, do not act anything, that is not revocable.

For raising and appeasing anger in another; it is done chiefly by choosing of times, when men are frowardest and worst disposed, to incense them. Again, by gathering (as was touched before) all that you can find out, to aggravate the contempt. And the two remedies are by the contraries. The former to take good times, when first to relate to a man an angry business; for the first impression is much; and the other is, to sever, as much as may be, the construction of the injury from the point of contempt; imputing it to misunderstanding, fear, passion, or what you will.

#3585. aureate の例文を OED より [oed][lydgate][style][latin][aureate_diction][literature][terminology][rhetoric]

 連日話題にしている "aureate termes" (あるいは aureate_diction)と関連して,OED で aureate, adj. の項を引いてみた.まず語義1として原義に近い "Golden, gold-coloured." との定義が示され,c1450からの初例が示されている.続いて語義2に,お目当ての文学・修辞学で用いられる比喩的な語義が掲載されている.

2. fig. Brilliant or splendid as gold, esp. in literary or rhetorical skill; spec. designating or characteristic of a highly ornamental literary style or diction (see quotes.).

1430 Lydgate tr. Hist. Troy Prol. And of my penne the traces to correcte Whiche barrayne is of aureat lycoure.
1508 W. Dunbar Goldyn Targe (Chepman & Myllar) in Poems (1998) I. 186 Your [Homer and Cicero's] aureate tongis both bene all to lyte For to compile that paradise complete.
1625 S. Purchas Pilgrimes ii. 1847 If I erre, I will beg indulgence of the Pope's aureat magnificence.
1819 T. Campbell Specimens Brit. Poets I. ii. 93 The prevailing fault of English diction, in the fifteenth century, is redundant ornament, and an affectation of anglicising Latin words. In this pedantry and use of 'aureate terms', the Scottish versifiers went even beyond their brethren of the south.
1908 G. G. Smith in Cambr. Hist. Eng. Lit. II. iv. 93 The chief effort was to transform the simpler word and phrase into 'aureate' mannerism, to 'illumine' the vernacular.
1919 J. C. Mendenhall Aureate Terms i. 7 Such long and supposedly elegant words have been dubbed ???aureate terms???, because..they represent a kind of verbal gilding of literary style. The phrase may be traced back..in the sense of long Latinical words of learned aspect, used to express a comparatively simple idea.
1936 C. S. Lewis Allegory of Love vi. 252 This peculiar brightness..is the final cause of the whole aureate style.

 1819年, 1908年の批評的な例文からは,areate terms を虚飾的とするネガティヴな評価がうかがわれる.また,1919年の Mendenhall からの例文は,areate terms のもう1つの定義を表わしている.
遅ればせながら,この単語の語源はラテン語の aureāus (decorated with gold) である.なお,「桂冠詩人」を表わす poet laureateaureate と脚韻を踏むが,この表現も1429年の Lydgate が初出である(ただし laureat poete の形ではより早く Chaucer に現われている).

#3584. "The dulcet speche" としての aureate terms [lydgate][style][latin][aureate_diction][literature][terminology][rhetoric]

So that Elocucyon doth ryght well claryfy
The dulcet speche from the language rude,
Tellynge the tale in termes eloquent:
The barbry tongue it doth ferre exclude,
Electynge words which are expedyent,
In Latin or in Englyshe, after the entente,
Encensyng out the aromatyke fume,
Our langage rude to exyle and consume.

Hawes によれば,それは "The dulcet speche" であり,"the aromatyke fume" であり,"the language rude" の対極にあるものだったのだである.
 これはラテン語風英語に対する16世紀初頭の評価だが,数十年おいて同世紀の後半になると,さらに本格的なラテン借用語の流入 --- もはや「ラテン語かぶれ」というほどの熱狂 --- が始まることになる.文体史的にも英語史的にも,Chaucer 以来続く1つの大きな流れを認めないわけにはいかない.

#3583. "halff chongyd Latyne" としての aureate terms [lydgate][chaucer][style][latin][aureate_diction][literature][terminology][rhetoric]

 標題は "aureate diction" とも称される,主に15世紀に Lydgate などが発展させたラテン語の単語や語法を多用した「金ぴかな」文体である.この語法と John Lydgate (1370?--1450?) の貢献については「#292. aureate diction」 ([2010-02-13-1]),「#2657. 英語史上の Lydgate の役割」 ([2016-08-05-1]) で取り上げたことがあった.今回は "aureate terms" の定義と,それに対する同時代の反応について見てみたい.
 J. C. Mendenhall は,Areate Terms: A Study in the Literary Diction of the Fifteenth Century (Thesis, U of Pennsylvania, 1919) のなかで,"those new words, chiefly Romance or Latinical in origin, continually sought under authority of criticism and the best writers, for a rich and expressive style in English, from about 1350 to about 1530" (12) と定義している.
Romance of Amoryus and Cleopes のエピローグのなかで,詩人としての Chaucer と Lydgate を次のように評価している(以下,Nichols 520 より再引用).

                 (314)
And yff I the trwthe schuld here wryght,
As gret a style I schuld make in euery degre
As Chauncerys off qwene Eleyne, or Cresseyd, doth endyght;
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
                 (316)
For thei that greyheryd be, affter folkys estymacion,
Nedys must be more cunne, be kendly nature,
Than he that late begynnyth, as be demonstration,
My mastyr Chauncerys, I mene, that long dyd endure
In practyk off rymyng;---qwerffore proffoundely
With many prouerbys hys bokys rymyd naturally.
                 (317)
Eke Ion Lydgate, sumtyme monke off Byry,
Hys bokys endyted with termys off retoryk
And halff chongyd Latyne, with conseytys fantastyk,
But eke hys qwyght her schewyd, and hys late werk,
How that hys contynwaunz made hym both a poyet and a clerk.

端的にいえば,Metham は Chaucer は脚韻の詩人だが,Lydgate は aureate terms の詩人だと評しているのである.そして,引用の終わりにかけての箇所に "termys off retoryk / And halff chongyd Latyne, with conseytys fantastyk" とあるが,これはまさに areate terms の同時代的な定義といってよい.

   1. Words are borrowed not once and for all but many times and from many sources.
   2. A Latin word borrowed into either of Anglo-French or English would be given an ending prescribed by Anglo-Norman scribal tradition.
   3. Words could be borrowed from Latin or French depending on what spheres of society the borrowers moved in. Clerics would be more likely to borrow from Latin than would laics.
   4. As the medieval libraries of England contained mainly Latin books and school curricula concentrated on Latin texts, learned words borrowed into French from written Latin sources would be more likely also to have entered English from those same sources than through French.

. . . the 'learned words' . . . could have been taken either from French or directly from Latin. The difficulty of determining the exact source has been recognized with varying hesitation. Foremost in Francophilia stands the Oxford English Dictionary, which regards as borrowed from Latin only those words that have not been recorded in French; in addition, French forms are often postulated. To the author's knowledge, no scholar before Marchand has openly criticized this procedure.

 Ellenberger が引用中で同じ意見の仲間として引き合いに出している H. Marchand は,The Categories and Types of Present-Day English Word-Formation (2nd ed. München, 1969) の p. 238 で次のように述べている (Ellenberger 142fn) .

It would . . . be an erroneous standpoint to be always looking for the Latin original or the French pattern of a word (which the OED often does). The existence of an actual pattern is irrelevant so long as, potentially, the coinage is Latin. . . . the principle of assuming an actual original is wrong.

 借用元の形態が文証されるからフランス語であるとか,そうでないからラテン語であるとか,そのような議論はおそらく成り立たないだろうということだ.Ellenberger (148) 自身の言葉でいえば,次のような議論となる.

The clerks knew about adaptation and suffixation; they were used to latinizing English names, and sometimes words, and we may trust them to have been able to anglicize a Latin word in the same way as they or the French would have Frenchified it. To request a French intermediary for each and every word is to deny the knowledge of Latin in England. To regard an English word as a loan from French because a corresponding French loan is recorded a few years earlier in an ever so obscure source is to fall a victim to the perilous argument of post hoc, ergo propter hoc; as far as we know, no annual lists of new French words circulated among English clerks. Whether a learned word occurs first in French or English is simply a matter of chance, need, and literary activity.

 中英語期の学問語 (= "mots savants") のソースがフランス語なのかラテン語なのかという問題を議論することよりも大事なことは,むしろそれが一般のフランス借用語とは異なるレベルに属することを再認識することだろう.Ellenberger (150) が,論文の最後で次のように述べている通りである.

A far more useful distinction than that between learned words that might have and those that could not have been mediated by French is that between Romance popular and learned words. Middle English mots savants are latinisms and should be treated as such.

King JamesFirst Folio
old formnew formold formnew form
bare 175bore 1bare 10bore 25
clave 14cleft 2clave 0cleft 8
gat 20, gotten 25got 7gat 0, gotten 5got 115

seeth 54sees 0seeth 0sees 40
spake 585spoke 0spake 48spoke 142
yonder 7yon 0, yond 0yonder 66yon 9, yond 45

欽定訳聖書は,序文に "The old Ecclesiastical Words to be kept, viz., the Word Church not to be translated Congregations, &c."

屈折の単純さ (simplicity of inflection) ,機能の柔軟さ (flexibility of function) ,語彙の開放性 (openness of vocabulary) である.屈折の単純さと語彙の開放性については「#151. 現代英語の5特徴」 ([2009-09-25-1]) をはじめ pde_characteristic の記事などで取り上げてきたが,機能の柔軟さを現代英語の基本的特徴の1つに数え上げる見解は比較的珍しいのではないかと思う.以下,Britannica より引用する.

Flexibility of function has grown over the last five centuries as a consequence of the loss of inflections. Words formerly distinguished as nouns or verbs by differences in their forms are now often used as both nouns and verbs. One can speak, for example, of "planning a table" or "tabling a plan," "booking a place" or "placing a book," "lifting a thumb" or "thumbing a lift." In the other Indo-European languages, apart from rare exceptions in Scandinavian, nouns and verbs are never identical because of the necessity of separate noun and verb endings. In English, forms for traditional pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs can also function as nouns; adjectives and adverbs as verbs; and nouns, pronouns, and adverbs as adjectives. One speaks in English of the Frankfurt Book Fair, but in German one must add the suffix -er to the place-name and put attributive and noun together as a compound, Frankfurter Buchmesse. In French one has no choice but to construct a phrase involving the use of two prepositions: Foire du Livre de Francfort. In English it is now possible to employ a plural noun as adjunct (modifier), as in "wages board" and "sports editor"; or even a conjunctional group, as in "prices and incomes policy" and "parks and gardens committee."

 (1) goober (peanut), yam (sweet potato), tote (to carry), buckra (white man)

No way no girl can't wear no platform shoes to no amusement park.

 (2) 存在構文に there ではなく it を用いる.It ain't no food here.

 (3) 複数形,所有格形,3単現の -s,過去の -ed などが省略されることがある.He got three cent. / That's my brother book. / She like new clothes. / They talk all night.

 (4) 疑問文で倒置がなされないことがある.What it is? / How you are?

 (5) be 動詞の否定で do が用いられることがある.It don't all be her fault.

 (6) be の習慣相の用法.They be fightin. / He be laughing.

 (7) 強勢のある been により遠い過去の習慣的な行為を表わす.I béen see dat movie. / She béen had dat hat.

 (8) 時に小辞 a により意志を表わす.I'm a shoot you. (= I'm going to shoot you.)

 (9) steady が,進行形の前位置や,文末の位置において強勢を伴って相的な意味を表わす.We be steady rappin. / We steady be rappin. / We be rappin stéady. (= We are always talking.) / They steady be high. / They be stady high. / They be high stéady.. (= They are always intoxicated.)

 (10) Come が時に準助動詞として用いられる.He come tellin me some story. (= He told me a lie.) / They come comin in here like they own de place. (= They came in here like they owned the place.)

 (11) like を「ほとんど」の意味で副詞的に用いる.I like to die(d). (= I almost died.) / He like to hit his head on that branch. (= He almost hit his head on that branch.)

We're comingWe'll be here などにおいても脱落し,"We comin" や "We be here" のようになる.

 (2) -ing において,/ŋ/ は /n/ で置換される.coming, running は,したがって "comin", "runnin" となる.

 (3) 語末の子音群は縮減される.desk, test, cold はそれぞれ "des", "tes", "col" となる.

 (4) 過去形語尾 /d/ も子音群において脱落する.looked, talked は,"look", "talk" となってしまう.

 (5) 語頭の /ð/ はしばしば /d/ で発音され,that day, this house が "dat day", "dis house" となる.

として,penny/pence は古代ローマの銀貨 danarius/danarii に由来する d.

across, belong, block, bobbin, bronze, catalogue, choreography, confident, dog, donkey, glottal, jolly, obstinate, off, olive, plonk, stock, tonsils; cost, lost, frost, costume, ostensible, posterior

 一方,<o> ≡ /ʌ/ は,上記のデフォルトからは逸れるものの,/v/ の前では広くみられるし,それ以外でも多くの例を挙げることができる.Carney (351, 355) より例を抜き出そう.

above, coven, covenant, cover, covet, covey, discover, dove, glove, govern, love, oven, plover, recover, shove, shovel, slovenly; accomplice, accomplish, among, another, borough, brother, colour, comfort, company, compass, conjure, fishmonger, front, frontier, ironmonger, mongrel, monk, monkey, month, mother, nothing, one, once, other, smother, son, sponge, ton, tongue, won, wonder, Monday

#3572. 謎の多い be 動詞の否定形 ain't (2) [be][conjugation][negative][compensatory_lengthening]

. . . from the sixteenth century on, we see forms dropping the m appear---first an't, then ain't, again with many regional variants such as een't in Suffolk, yunt in Worcestershire, yent in Berkshire, ant in New England, and ent in African-American usage.

 次に,OED の be, v. を引いてみると,語源解説の2.1に詳しい記述がある.それによると,ain't は,amn't からの発達という可能性もあるが,aren't からも,そして isn't からも同様に発達し得たことが示唆されている.

The forms an't and ain't, when functioning as 1st singular, perhaps represent a contraction of am with the negative particle rather than levelling from the 2nd singular and plural (i.e. corresponding to aren't with simplification of final consonant group; compare discussion of ain't below and see discussions in E. J. Dobson Eng. Pronunc. 1500-1700 (ed. 2, 1968) II. 則238, W. N. Francis in Focus on: Eng. & Wales (1985) 141-151; a third possible source (for ain't) is by compensatory lengthening after loss of s from isn't; compare discussion of en't at Forms 2c(iv)龍). However, if so, an't and ain't were subsequently reanalysed as equivalent to are not, and the spelling aren't superseded an't in standard English, leading to avoidance not only of I aren't but also of aren't I by some speakers of current English. A similar problem arises with the early modern English form wan't, which when used for the singular, may represent either a contraction of was with not or show levelling of a variant of weren't. Compare also the concurrent development of similar contracted forms shan't (contracted form of SHALL v.) and han't, hain't, ain't (contracted forms of HAVE v.).

 数・人称ごとに場合分けして発達を探るということが必要かもしれない.また,子音の問題は,いずれの場合にも「脱落」で片付けることができるかもしれないが,母音の問題については積極的なコメントはない.方言形であるとか,単に異形であるとか,そのような説明で済ませている場合が多いようだ.やはり,ain't は歴史的に謎である.

#3571. 謎の多い be 動詞の否定形 ain't (1) [be][conjugation][negative][register]

I'm going too, ain't I?) .また,100年ほど前には,上流階級でも普通に用いられていた旨が Crystal (35) に述べられている.

Today, ain't is considered non-standard, but it's widespread throughout the English-speaking world---probably used far more often than the standard equivalent---and a century ago it was actually acceptable upper-class speech, turning up frequently in the novels of the period. Here's the lawyer Mr Wharton arguing with his sister-in-law over his daughter's future, in Anthony Trollope's The Prime Minister (1875): 'I ain't thinking of her marrying'. And towards the end of the novel the Duke of Omnium himself asks someone: 'I hope you ain't cold'.

 ain't は18世紀後半より広く用いられているが,その起源については諸説ある.共時的な用法に関しても,通時的な発達に関しても謎の多い魅力的なトピックである.関連して American Heritage Dictionary の Notes より,ain't を参照.

#3570. P と Q の対応にいかなる価値を置くべきか? [celtic][family_tree][comparative_linguistics]

(2) [literacy][anthropology]

Literacy is not a straightforward "technology of the intellect"; technologies, like intellects . . ., are social and cultural constructions, arrived at by particular histories of engaging with the world and each other through various institutions and events. There are as many literacies as there are ways of engaging the world and ourselves through the written word. Those whose lives are deeply embedded in and lived through the written word could expect some cognitive effects as a result of this, but that is simply the result of their particular lived histories, their trajectories of structural coupling and nothing more. And, of course, what those effects might be will be local, specific to the local literacy practices that they have engaged in and whose understanding they embody. There are no certain or universal effects.

 この箇所は,実に読み応えのある批評である.続く Foley (434) の結論部でも,同趣旨で次のようにある.

Cultural practices and beliefs about literacy are highly variable, demonstrating the impossibility of any simple oral/literate divide or monolithic literate technology. Rather, literate practices of each culture reflect the way they engage with the world through the written word, their lived history of structural coupling via a script technology.

 literacy というと,まず個人の認知や学習という側面を考えがちだが,それと同じくらい個々の社会・文化に特有の歴史的構築物だという視点にも注意を払っておきたい.

#3568. literacy は認知上の決定的な差異をもたらすか? (1) [literacy][anthropology]

 literacy のある個人とない個人,literacy のある共同体とない共同体とでは,何かが決定的に異なっているにちがいないと思われるのは自然である.では,読み書きができる,できないという定義上の差異を超えて,何がどう異なるのだろうか.Foley (417) は,当該分野の草分け的な論文を著わした人類学者 Goody の説を紹介しつつ,この点に触れている.

In a seminal study, Goody . . . building on earlier work . . . proposed that literacy is a major force for social and cultural change. He proposed to replace earlier contrasts in anthropological writings between prelogical versus logical mentalities or "primitive" versus civilized minds . . ., or the Neolithic "science of the concrete" versus our modern "science of the abstract" . . . with a contrast between oral versus literate cultures. In other words the invention of writing, roughly around five thousand years ago, was a watershed event in human history, so that societies possessing this "technology of the intellect" . . . are fundamentally different as a result of this invention. Goodly followed this work up with subsequent publications . . ., and this hypothesis has independently been proposed or enthusiastically taken up by a number of other researchers. . . . On the face of it, this suggestion might seem relatively uncontroversial. The members of a literate society are clearly different from those of an oral one --- they can read and write. But Goody and his fellow researchers mean much more than this; it is their contention that the possession of this skill, this "technology of the intellect," leads to major cognitive changes in the way literates think about themselves and their world. Literacy brings about a major cognitive revolution, a revolution best exemplified, in Goody's view, in the flowering of critical and speculative thought in classical Greece, but a potential outcome wherever literacy takes hold.

 Goody の説によると,literacy は「認知上の大革命」をもたらし,典型的に古典ギリシアと結びつけられる批評的・思索的精神の発生を促すのだという.Goody は literacy のこの力はおそらく普遍的で必然的と考えているが,そのように単純に議論することはできるのだろうか.すでに読み書きできる私たちにとって,literacy = "[the] technology of the intellect" という捉え方は,ある意味で非常に自然なのだが,この意見には反論も出されている.その議論については明日の記事で.
