Innovation Diffusion as a Spatial Process が出版されると世に広く知られることになった.人文地理学事典で diffusion の項を執筆した Gregory (160) によると,その革新的な意義は次の通り.

Hágerstrand's work had two catalytic consequences: it set in motion the frozen worlds of SPATIAL SCIENCE, and it opened the door to sophisticated computer modelling of spatial processes.

 この Hägerstrand の傑作により diffusion 研究は一時的に勢いを得たものの,やがて社会学的な観点から多くの問題点が指摘されるようになり,diffusion 研究全体が沈滞するようになった.Gregory (161) より,その状況を確認しておこう.

Just ten years after the translation of Hágerstrand's magnum opus, Blaikie (1978) could speak of a 'crisis' in diffusion research, which he said arose from its preoccupation with spatial form and space-time sequence, while Gregory (1985) attributed the 'stasis' of diffusion theory to a pervasive unwillingness to engage with SOCIAL THEORY and social history to explore the conditions and the consequences of diffusion processes. Critics argued that the spatial circulation of information remained the strategic element in most applications of the Hägerstrand model and its derivatives, and while flows of information through different propagation structures and contact networks were exposed in more detail, the primacy accorded to the reconstruction of these spatial pathways obscured a crucial limitation of the Hägerstrand model: it operated within what Blaut (1977) called a 'granular region', 'a sort of Adam Smithian landscape, totally without macrostructure'. In particular:

(1) The Hägerstrand model begins with a pool of 'potential adopters' and does not explain the selective process through which they are constituted in the first place. This suggests the need for a model of biased innovation, where (for example) CLASS or GENDER circumscribes access to innovations. 'Non-diffusion' is then not a passive but an active state arising directly from the structures of a particular society (Yapa and Mayfield, 1978). Critiques of this sort required diffusion theory to be integrated with fields such as POLITICAL ECONOMY and FEMINIST GEOGRAPHY that pay attention to the social as well as the spatial.

(2) The Hägerstrand model assumes a 'uniform cognitive region' and does not explain the selective process through which information flows are interpreted. This matters because 'resistance' to innovation is not invariably a product of ignorance or insufficient information: it may signal a political struggle by people whose evaluation of the information is strikingly different to that of the 'potential adopters'. Critiques of this sort required diffusion theory to be reconnected to a more general cultural geography (Blaut, 1977).

Gregory は,言語変化の diffusion については一言も触れていない.しかし,この人文地理学における diffusion 研究史を知っておくと,有益な洞察を得られる.言語変化の diffusion 研究も,今後,社会・政治的な "macrostructure" を念頭に置くアプローチがますます必要になってくるだろう.

#4245. 頻度と漸近双曲線 (A-curve) [lexical_diffusion][zipfs_law][frequency][statistics][language_change][uniformitarian_principle]

後者は "few realizations that occur very frequently and many realizations that occur infrequently" (384) ということである.

Our second observation, about the distribution of variants according to Zipf's Law, has the strongest set of implications for historical study of language. If we take the A-curve as the model for the frequency distribution of variants for any linguistic feature of interest to us at any moment in time, then we should expect that any particular variant of interest to us will have a particular rank along the A-curve. Therefore, one of the things that we should try to do for any given moment in time is to determine the place of our variant of interest on the curve; we need to know whether it is the most frequent variant in the set of possible realizations (at the top of the curve), or an infrequent variant (in the tail of the curve). Then, for any subsequent moment in time, we can again try to determine the location of our variant of interest along the curve, and so try to make a statement about whether the location of the variant has changed in the intervening time (see Figure 14). Since we hypothesize that an A-curve will exist for every feature at any moment in time (i.e., that language will not suddenly become invariant), we can define the notion "linguistic change" itself as the change in the location of the target variant at different heights along the curve. If a particular variant occurs at a higher place on the curve than it did before, it has become more frequent and so we can say that the direction of change for that variant is positive; if a variant occurs at a lower place on the curve than it did before, it has become less frequent and the direction of change is negative.

          The Comparison of Adjectives.

The comparative degree of adjectives is formed by adding er, the superlative by adding est, to the positive; as, fair, fairer, fairest; lovely, lovelier, loveliest; sweet, sweeter, sweetest; low, lower, lowest; high, higher, highest.
Some words are irregularly compared; as good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; little, less, least; near, nearer, next; much, more, most; many (or moe), more for moer), most (for moest); late, latter, latest or last.
Some comparatives form a superlative by adding most, as nether, nethermost; outer, outmost; under, undermost; up, upper, uppermost; fore, former, foremost.
Many adjectives do not admit of comparison by terminations, and are only compared by more and most, as benevolent, more benevolent, most benevolent.
All adjectives may be compared by more and most, even when they have comparatives and superlatives regularly formed; as fair; fairer, or more fair; fairest, or most fair.
In adjectives that admit a regular comparison, the comparative more is oftener used than the superlative most, as more fair is oftener written for fairer, than most fair for fairest.
The comparison of adjectives is very uncertain; and being much regulated by commodiousness of utterance, or agreeableness of sound, is not easily reduced to rules.
   Monosyllables are commonly compared.
Polysyllables, or words of more than two syllables, are seldom compared otherwise than by more and most, as deplorable, more deplorable, most deplorable.
Disyllables are seldom compared if they terminate in some, as fulsome, toilsome; in ful, as careful, spleenful, dreadful; in ing, as trifling, charming; in ous, as porous; in less, as careless, harmless; in ed, as wretched; in id, as candid; in al, as mortal; in ent, as recent, fervent; in ain, as certain; in ive, as missive; in dy, as woody; in fy, as puffy; in ky, as rocky, except lucky; in my, as roomy; in ny, as skinny; in py, as ropy, except happy; in ry, as hoary.

(4) [spelling][orthography][minim][vowel][spelling_pronunciation_gap][eme][me_dialect][lexical_diffusion]

 昨日の記事 ([2019-03-13-1]) に引き続いての話題.中英語における <u> と <o> の分布を111のテキストにより調査した Wełna (317) は,結論として以下のように述べている.

. . . the examination of the above corpus data has shown a lack of any consistent universal rule replacing <u> with <o> in the graphically obscure contexts of the postvocalic graphemes <m, n>. Even words with identical roots, like the forms of the lemmas SUN (OE sunne), SUMMER (OE sumor) and SON (OE sunu), SOME (OE sum) which showed a similar distribution of <u/o> spellings in most Middle English dialects, eventually (and unpredictably) have retained either the original spelling <u> (sun) or the modified spelling <o> (son). In brief, each word under discussion modified its spelling at a different time and in different regions in a development which closely resembles the circumstances of lexical diffusion.

 このように奥歯に物が挟まったような結論なのだが,Wełna は時代と方言の観点から次の傾向を指摘している.

. . . o-spellings first emerged in the latter half of the 12th century in the (South-)West (honi "honey" . . .). Later, a tendency to use the new spelling <o> is best documented in London and in the North.

Wełna 本人も述べているように,調査の対象としたレンマは HUNDRED, HUNGER, HONEY, NUN, SOME, SUMMER, SUN, SON の8つにすぎず,ここから一般的な結論を引き出すのは難しいのかもしれない.さらなる研究が必要のようだ.

#3324. 言語変化は霧のなかを這うようにして進んでいく [language_change][syntax][teleology][invisible_hand][lexical_diffusion]

 言語変化,とりわけ統語変化の進行の仕方について,言語学を分かりやすく紹介してくれることで定評のある Aitchison (100) が次のように要約している.

Syntactic change typically creeps into a language via optional stylistic variants. Particular lexical items provide a toehold. The change tends to become widely used via ambiguous structures. One or some of these get increasingly preferred, and in the long run the dispreferred options fade away through disuse. Mostly, speakers are unaware that such changes are taking place. Overall, all changes, whether phonetic/phonological, morphological, or syntactic, take place gradually, and also spread gradually. There is always fluctuation between the old and the new. Then the changes tend to move onward and outward, becoming the norm among one group of speakers before moving on to the next.

[S]peakers in the process of using --- and thus of changing --- their language often act as if they were in a fog, by which is meant not that they are befuddled but that they see clearly only immediately around them, so to speak, and only in a clouded manner farther afield. They thus generalize only 'locally' . . . and not globally over vast expanses of data, and they exercise their linguistic insights only through a small 'window of opportunity' over a necessarily small range of data.

 個々の話者は,大きな流れのなかにある言語変化の目的や結果は見えておらず,近視眼的に行動しているだけである.言語変化の「見えざる手」 (invisible_hand) の理論や目的論 (teleology) の話題にも直結する見解である.
 標記のように,「言語変化は霧のなかを這うようにして進んでいく」ものなのだろう.

#3171. 1/f 繧?繧峨℃ [language_change][variation][chaos_theory][invisible_hand][complex_system][lexical_diffusion][speed_of_change][1/f][dynamic_equilibrium]

 1/f ゆらぎは,複雑系 (complex_system) やカオス理論 (chaos_theory) とも深く関係する.

#3123. カオスとフラクタル [chaos_theory][variation][lexical_diffusion][complex_system]

Mandelbrot Set

#2897. 渋沢栄一の述べる「言語動作の感染性と伝播力」 [language_change][lexical_diffusion]

#2713. 「言語変化のスケジュール」に関する書誌情報 [schedule_of_language_change][lexical_diffusion][speed_of_change]

#2641. 言語変化の速度について再考 [speed_of_change][schedule_of_language_change][language_change][lexical_diffusion][evolution][punctuated_equilibrium]

Since we find it almost impossible to measure the rate of linguistic change with any accuracy, obviously we cannot flatly assert that it is constant; if, in fact, it is variable, then one can identify relatively slow change with stability, and relatively rapid change with transition. I think we can with confidence assert that the variation in rate cannot be very large. For this belief there is descriptive evidence. Currently we are obtaining dozens of reports of language all over the world, based on direct observation. If there were any really sharp dichotomy between 'stability' and 'transition', then our field reports would reveal the fact: they would fall into two fairly distinct types. Such is not the case, so that contrapositively the assumption is shown to be false.

 Hockett (58) は別の箇所でも,言語変化の速度を測ることについて懐疑的な態度を表明している.

Can we speak, with any precision at all, about the rate of linguistic change? I think that precision and significance of judgments or measurements in this connection are related as inverse functions. We can be precise by being superficial, say in measuring the rate of replacement in basic vocabulary; but when we turn to deeper aspects of language design, the most we can at present hope for is to attain some rough 'feel' for rate of change.

The Scn words so far dealt with have this in common that they prevail in the East Midlands, the North, and the North West Midlands, or in one or two of these districts, while their native synonyms hold the field in the South West Midlands and the South."
 しかし,事情は一見するほど単純ではないことにも留意する必要がある.Rynell (359--60) は上の文に続けて,次のように但し書きを付け加えている.

This is obviously not tantamount to saying that the native words are wanting in the former parts of the country and, inversely, that the Scn words are all absent from the latter. Instead, the native words are by no means infrequent in the East Midlands, the North, and the North West Midlands, or at least in parts of these districts, and not a few Scn loan-words turn up in the South West Midlands and the South, particularly near the East Midland border in Essex, once the southernmost country of the Danelaw. Moreover, some Scn words seem to have been more generally accepted down there at a surprisingly early stage, in some cases even at the expense of their native equivalents.

 加えて注意すべきは,現存する中英語テキストの分布が偏っている点である.言い方をかえれば,中英語コーパスが,時期と地域方言に関して代表性 (representativeness) を欠いているという問題だ.Rynell (358) によれば,

A survey of the entire material above collected, which suffers from the weakness that the texts from the North and the North (and Central) West Midlands are all comparatively late and those from the South West Midlands nearly all early, while the East Midland and Southern texts, particularly the former, represent various periods, shows that in a number of cases the Scn words do prevail in the East Midlands, the North, and the North (and sometimes Central) West Midlands and the South, exclusive of Chaucer's London . . . .

#2564. varietylect [variety][terminology][style][register][dialect][sociolinguistics][lexical_diffusion][speed_of_change][schedule_of_language_change]

 社会言語学では variety (変種)という用語をよく用いるが,ときに似たような使い方で lect という用語も聞かれる.これは dialect や sociolectlect を取り出したものだが,用語上の使い分けがあるのか疑問に思い,Trudgill の用語集を繰ってみた.それぞれの項目を引用する.

variety A neutral term used to refer to any kind of language --- a dialect, accent, sociolect, style or register --- that a linguist happens to want to discuss as a separate entity for some particular purpose. Such a variety can be very general, such as 'American English', or very specific, such as 'the lower working-class dialect of the Lower East Side of New York City'. See also lect

lect Another term for variety or 'kind of language' which is neutral with respect to whether the variety is a sociolect or a (geographical) dialect. The term was coined by the American linguist Charles-James Bailey who, as part of his work in variation theory, has been particularly interested in the arrangement of lects in implicational tables, and the diffusion of linguistic changes from one linguistic environment to another and one lect to another. He has also been particularly concerned to define lects in terms of their linguistic characteristics rather than their geographical or social origins.

#2509. Intralinguistic, Extralinguistic, Intrasystemic, Extrasystemic [terminology][language_change][causation][plural][lexical_diffusion][contact]

 「#1600. Samuels の言語変化モデル」 ([2013-09-13-1]) で少し触れたが,Samuels は言語変化とそれを引き起こす諸要因を考える上での基本的な対立として,Intralinguistic と Extralinguistic を考えており,前者はさらに Intrasystemic と Extrasystemic に分けられる.Samuels (7) による関係図を少々改変して示すと,以下の通りである.

Intralinguistic ─────┬───── Intrasystemic
                          │
└───── Extrasystemic 1 (linguistic sense only)

Extralinguistic ─────────── Extrasystemic 2 (non-linguistic sense, here not used)

#2303. 言語変化のスケジュールに関する諸問題 [schedule_of_language_change][language_change][lexical_diffusion][speed_of_change][unidirectionality][methodology][linguistics]

. . . it is important to see that the problem of diachronic diffusion has two sides. On the one hand, we have to explain the phasedness of diffusional change---that is, to explain why diffusional change happens in stages with different environments being affected at different times, and what determines the order in which environments are affected. On the other hand, there is the more intractable question of what drives diffusion---that is, why does diffusion seem to go on and on, and what gives it its unidirectionality?

[lexical_diffusion][language_change][causation][schedule_of_language_change][unidirectionality][drift]

 「#2299. 拡散の駆動力3点」 ([2015-08-13-1]) で引用した De Smet (3) は,言語変化の拡散に繰り返し見られる2つの特徴に触れている."gradualness" と "unidirectionality" だ.

. . . diffusional changes do have two recurrent characteristics. First, they are gradual and their gradualness is context bound, which means that different environments are affected by change at different times or in a different pace. This context-bound gradualness has been disputed for some changes . . . ; yet in many cases, . . . context-bound gradualness is immediately apparent from the data. While this suggests that gradualness is perhaps more pronounced for some changes than for others, there is no denying that it is a central aspect of some major grammatical developments.
Second, diffusional changes are unidirectional, in the sense that once an environment has been conquered by change it is not normally yielded back. Unidirectionality here does not mean that diffusion proceeds indefinitely but simply that there is a time window in which distributions can grow continuously, without any serious fallback or fluctuation. This consistency of change sometimes seems natural. For instance, in actualization it might be thought of as a systematic bearing out of the logical consequences of syntactic reanalysis. In grammaticalization, consistent collocational expansion often follows from semantic bleaching. But in other cases, . . . a single straightforward explanation for directionality seems lacking, making the directionality observed all the more mystifying.

#2300. 句動詞の品詞転換と名前動後 [conversion][phrasal_verb][compound][word_formation][diatone][stress][lexical_diffusion]

It is of interest to note that the structural type so often characteristic of both simple conversion-substantives and verb-adverb combinations converted into nouns is the same, e.g. very often of a form ‿-́ . . .; the simple conv.-subst. showing a light, unstressed first syllable and a heavy, stressed second syllable, while in the adverb groups a (mostly) short verb is followed by an adverb having the main stress of the word-group.

#2299. 拡散の駆動力3点 [lexical_diffusion][language_change][causation][analogy][schedule_of_language_change]

Most innovations in diffusion appear to arise through analogy---that is, as a result of the bearing out of synchronic regularities. There are two reasons analogy can lead to unidirectional diffusion of a pattern. If we assume that analogy is sensitive to frequency, in that analogical pressure grows as the analogical model becomes more frequent, it follows that as diffusion proceeds analogy grows stronger and more and more environments will yield to its pressure. In this sense, diffusion is a self-feeding process, keeping itself going once it has been triggered. . . . But analogy can be self-feeding not only in a quantitative but also in a qualitative way. . . . [D]iffusion can proceed along analogical chains, whereby every actual change reshuffles the cards for any potential change. Because language users are tireless at inferring regularities from usage---and may even not mind some degree of inconsistency---each analogical extension changes the generalizations that are likely to be inferred, opening new horizons to further analogical extension.

 ここで提案されている変異形の頻度という要因を含むメカニズムは,Denison の述べる変異形の選択にかかる圧力にも近い.しかし,言語変化の拡散は,類推というメカニズムが機械的に作用することによってのみ駆動されているわけではない.類推が主たる原動力となりつつも,個々の変異に補助的で局所的な力が働き,拡散の経路が「補正」されるという考え方だ.De Smet (8) によれば,その補助的な力は2種類ある.

Nevertheless, it would be simplistic to believe that analogical snowballs and chains operate exclusively on the basis of analogy. I see at least the following two auxiliary factors. First, if linguistic choices are determined by multiple and variable considerations that are weighed against each other, every usage event comes with a unique constellation of factors pulling linguistic choices one way or another. It is therefore inevitable that there are occasional contexts in which language users are strongly compelled to go against the default grammatical regularities of the system. The unusual choices that occasionally arise in this way may help break down resistance to change. Second, the construction from which a new spreading pattern derives usually occurs in a number of different environments. Because of this, the new pattern is present from the very start in a number of different places in the system, having as it were a diffusional headstart that can very quickly lead to the inference of new generalizations.

Phillips (233) の参照した Mieko Ogura (Historical English Phonology: A Lexical Perspective. Tokyo: Kenkyusha, 1987.)

#2168. Neogrammarian hypothesis と lexical diffusion の融和 (2) [neogrammarian][lexical_diffusion][schedule_of_language_change][speed_of_change]

. . . we submit that part of the resolution of the ongoing controversy over regularity in phonological change may be related to the trajectory slope of the change. From this perspective, irregularity and lexical diffusion are maximized at the beginning and the end of the slope and phonological regularity is maximized during the rapid expansion in the application of the rule change during the mid-course of change.

 この説を受け入れるとすると,音韻変化は,比較的語彙の関与の薄い規則的なステージと,比較的語彙の関与の強い不規則なステージとを交互に繰り返すということになる.しかし,なぜそのようなステージの区別が生じると考えられるのだろうか.理論的には「#1572. なぜ言語変化はS字曲線を描くと考えられるのか」 ([2013-08-16-1]) で説明したようなことが考え得るが,未解決の問いといってよいだろう.

#2167. "orderly heterogeneity" と diffusion [lexical_diffusion][language_change][variation][diachrony]

 「#1997. 言語変化の5つの側面」 ([2014-10-15-1]),「#1998. The Embedding Problem」 ([2014-10-16-1]),「#2012.
 Wolfram and Schilling-Estes (716) は,Charles-James N. Bailey (Variation and Linguistic Theory. Washington, DC: Center for Applied Linguistics, 1973.) に依拠し,言語変化の最中において "orderly heterogeneity" がどのように現われるのかを示すモデルを与えている.変化前後の旧形と新形を X, Y とし,Y が拡がっていく2つの言語環境を E1, E2 とすると,変化は次の各段階を経て進行していく.

Variation model of change

Stage of change E1E2
1Categorical status, before undergoing changeXX
2Early stage begins variably in restricted environmentX/YX
3Change in full progress, greater use of new form in E1 where change first initiatedX/YX/Y
4Change progresses toward completion with movement toward categoricality first in E1 where change initiatedYX/Y
5Completed change, new variantYY

通時的な拡散と共時的な変異が対応しあっていることについて,Wolfram and Schilling-Estes (716) は "the systematic variability of fluctuating forms will correlate synchronic relations of "more" and "less" to diachronic relations of "earlier" or "later" stages of the change" と述べている.
