ODPV (2) [dictionary][lexicography][phrasal_verb][conversion][punctuation][hyphen][gerund]

This index covers all the nominalized forms (ie nouns derived from verbs + particles/prepositions) recorded in the main part of the dictionary (usually but not always the base form of the verb + particle/preposition, with or without a hyphen). For a full treatment of these forms, see The Student's Guide to the Dictionary.
Nominalized forms sometimes consist of the -ing form of the verb + particle/preposition (eg (a) dressing-down, (a) summing-up, (a) telling-off). The more common examples are recorded here.
Each nominal form is listed alphabetically and is followed by the headphrase(s) of the entry (or entries) in which it appears in the main text:
change-over change over (from)(to); change round/over
output put out 7
When the nominalized form is the headphrase itself, the fact is noted as follows:
fall-out (main entry)
(There is no finite verb + particle expression in regular use from which fall-out derives: a sentence such as *The nuclear tests fell out over a large area is unacceptable.)
When a nominalized form is generally used attributively, a noun with which it commonly occurs is given in parentheses after it:
(a) see-through (blouse) see through 1
start-up (capital) start up 2
Whether a nominalized form appears as one word, as one word with a hyphen, or as two words, is often a matter of printing convention or individual usage. The entries in the dictionary and in this index generally show the most accepted form in British usage, but variations are recorded where appropriate, eg. a) poke(-)about/around.

ちなみに第1段落で参照されている The Student's Guide to the Dictionary の該当箇所 (xiii) には,次のようにある.

1 what is a nominalized form?
A nominalized form ('nom form' for short) is a noun formed from a phrasal verb: make-up, for instance, is formed from make up (ie 'apply cosmetics to one's face') and take-off is formed from take off (ie 'leave the ground in an aircraft'). Sometimes nom forms have a spelling which includes the letters -ing: tell off (ie 'reproach, reprimand') has the nom form telling-off.

 ただでさえ使いこなすのが難しい句動詞だが,そこからの発展形というべき品詞転換した名詞・形容詞についても相当に複雑な事情があるようだ.

#5182. 大補文推移の反対? [gcs][archer][corpus][mode][gerund][infinitive][complementation]

to the end that/to the end to V
   ↓
in order to NP/ing
   ↓
in order to V
   ↓
in order that ~ may

 秋元によれば,これは ARCHER Corpus で検索した結果に基づいたシナリオということだ.推移の順序に従って代表的な例文が5つ挙げられているので,ここに再掲する.

・ ... they were all Committed to Newgate, in order to their being Tried next Sessions. (1682 2PROI.N1)
・ I know not whether it might not be worth a Poet's while, to travel in order to store is mind with ... (1714 BERK.X2)
・ ... every moral agent must exist forever, in order to the proper and full exercise of moral government. (1789 HOPK.H4)
・ ... consequently I cut away all the cerebrum until the corpus callosum appeared, in order that I might the more readily examine the lateral ventricles. (1820 A.M5)
・ Not because I want to undervalue the importance of these signs, but in order that I may impress upon you how important it is to Subject ...

 確かに大補文推移を巻き戻したかのような順序の推移となっている.何か別の原理によるものなのか,あるいは偶発的な例外とみなすべきなのか,興味深い.

#5016. 中英語の動名詞構文 there was ---ing 「---が行なわれた」 [gerund][construction][be][syntax][existential_sentence][bnc]

「#4995. 動名詞構文 there is no ---ing 「---することはできない」は中英語期から」 ([2022-12-30-1]) は現代英語にも続く構文として知られているが,中英語には there was ---ing という興味深い構文が存在した.「---が行なわれた」「---というということが起きた」ほどの意味である.Mustanoja (576) にいくつか例が挙げられている.

The construction there was . . -ing is frequently used in ME for the expression of indefinite agency: --- þer was sobbing (Havelok 234); --- þer was sembling (Havelok 1018); --- thar wes oft bikkyring (Barbour ix 343); --- so greet wepyng was there noon, certayn, Whan Ector was ybroght, al fressh yslayn, To Troye, Allas, the pitee that was ther, Cracchynge of chekes, rentynge eek of heer (Ch. CT A Kn. 2831--4). A similar case is and thus the woful nyhtes sorwe To joie is torned on the morwe; Al was thonkinge, al was blessinge, Which erst was wepinge and cursinge (Gower CA ii 3317--18).

 動名詞で表わされる動作の行為者は不定であり,動作そのものに焦点を当てたい場合に用いる構文なのだろう.OED の -ing, suffix1 には特にこの構文に関する記述はなく,MED -ing(e (suf.(1)) にも言及がない.
この構文は,現代でも特に目立った構文として言及されることはないものの,細々とは受け継がれているようだ.there is/was ---ing の例を BNCweb よりいくつか挙げてみよう.

・ 'Well, like I told the foreign gentleman, there was dancing in the sitting room, and this Mrs Heatherington-Scott she was dancing with Mr Merrivale.'
 ・ There is shooting almost daily in the capital as roaming snipers attack military checkpoints;
・ There was rationing at home and war in Ireland.
・ First there was cheering then jeering.
・ There was knocking on the front door.

#5010. 『中高生の基礎英語 in English』の連載第23回「なぜ現在分詞と動名詞は同じ -ing で表されるの?」 [notice][sobokunagimon][rensai][participle][gerund][progressive][polysemy][suffix][heldio]

#4995. 動名詞構文 there is no ---ing 「---することはできない」は中英語期から [gerund][construction][negative][proverb][be][syntax][existential_sentence]

昨日の記事「#4994. There is no accounting for tastes 「蓼食う虫も好き好き」」 ([2022-12-29-1]) で取り上げた諺は,よく知られた there is no ---ing 「---することはできない」の動名詞構文の例となっている.One cannot account for tastes. It is impossible to account for tastes. と言い換えられる意味だ.
この諺は18世紀末に初出し,後期近代の比較的新しいものといえるが,there is no ---ing の動名詞構文そのものは,どのくらい古くまで歴史を遡れるのだろうか.OED の no, adj. によると,13世紀の修道女マニュアル Ancrene Riwle に初出する.構文としては it is no ---ing などの変異形もみられる (cf. 「#4790. therethey に相当する中英語の it の用法」 ([2022-06-08-1])) .以下 OED からの引用だが,構文上興味深い部分を赤で示してみた.

 古英語からすでに発達していた存在文 (existential_sentence) と,中英語期にようやく発達し始めた動名詞が,合体して生まれた構文といってよいだろう.存在文については「#1565. existential there の起源 (1)」 ([2013-08-09-1]) と「#1566. existential there の起源 (2)」 ([2013-08-10-1]),「#4473. 存在文における形式上の主語と意味上の主語」 ([2021-07-26-1]) を参照.

#4994. There is no accounting for tastes 「蓼食う虫も好き好き」 [proverb][gerund][construction]

「#4992. absence 「不在」に関する英語の諺2つ」 ([2022-12-27-1]) で述べたとおり,スキマ時間に英語の諺辞典を A から順に読み進めている.読み始めて間もなく accounting をキーワードとする標記の有名な諺に出会った.「蓼食う虫も好き好き」,他人の好みを説明することはできない,とりわけ自分にとって魅力を感じない嗜好をもっている人の考えていることはわらかない,という教訓だ.ラテン語 de gustibus non est disputandum "There is no disputing about tastes" にきれいに対応する.
 ODP6 によると英語での初例は1794年となっている.

1794 A. Radcliffe Mysteries of Udolpho I. xi. I have often thought the people he disapproved were much more agreeable than those he admired; --- but there is no accounting for tastes. 1889 Gissing Nether World II. viii. There is no accounting for tastes. Sidney . . . not once . . . congratulated himself on his good fortune. 1985 R. Reeves Doubting Thomas iv. 'You're usually in here with a little guy, wears a rug. Looks like he gets his suits from Sears. Paisley ties. . . . There's no accounting for taste.' 2014 Spectator 13 Dec. 75 I read of an ornament which is 'a plywood cutout of a giant boiled egg', but there's no accounting for taste, even bad taste.

#4759. to 不定詞の起源,再訪 [infinitive][gerund][germanic][morphology][inflection][verb]

The etymology of the to-infinitive is often given as a bare infinitive in the complement of a preposition to, but this leaves the gemination ('doubling') of the -n- in the to-infinitive unexplained. The gemination points to the presence of an earlier -j-, probably part of a nominalising suffix. This parallells (sic) the origin of the gerund . . . , and indicates that the to-infinitive is not built on the bare infinitive, which was a much earlier formation, but on a verbal stem, like any other nominalisation:

(57) to (preposition) + ber- (verbal stem) + -anja (derivational suffix) + -i (dative sg) → Common Germanic *to beranjōi, Old English: to berenne, Middle English: to beren/bere, PDE: to bear.

確かに古英語の原形不定詞 beran を普通の名詞と見立てて与格に屈折させても *berane にこそなれ berenne にはならない.母音も異なるし,子音の重ね (gemination) も考慮にいれなければならないことに,改めて気づいた.

#4635. "Great Complement Shift" 「大補文推移」 [gcs][gvs][syntax][verb][complementation][terminology][gerund][infinitive]

Over the past few centuries, English has experienced a massive restructuring of its system of sentential complementation, which may be referred to as the Great Complement Shift.

 一括りに補文構造の大変化といっても,実際には様々な種類の変化が含まれている.それらが互いにどのような関係をもつのかは明らかにされていないが,Rohdenburg はまとめて GCS と呼んでいる.Rohdenburg (143--45) は,次のような通時的変化(あるいはそれを示唆する共時的変異)の例を挙げている.

 (1) She delighted to do it. → She delighted in doing it.
 (2) She was used/accustomed to do it. → He was used/accustomed to doing it.
 (3) She avoided/dreaded to go there. → She avoided/dreaded going there.
 (4) He helped (to) establish this system.
 (5) They gave us some advice (on/as to) how it should be done.
 (6) a. He hesitated (about) whether he should do it.
   b. He hesitated (about) whether to do it.
 (7) a. She was at a loss (about) what she should do.
   b. She was at a loss (about) what to do.
 (8) a. She advised to do it in advance.
   b. She advised doing it in advance.
   c. She advised that it (should) be done in advance.
 (9) a. He promised his friends to return immediately.
   b. He promised his friends (that) he would return immediately.

[sobokunagimon][participle][verb][infinitive][gerund][verb][conjugation][suffix]

#4344. -in' は -ing の省略形ではない [consonant][phonetics][suffix][apostrophe][punctuation][participle][orthography][spelling][gerund][infinitive]

#4058. what with 罕???? [construction_grammar][syntax][participle][gerund][interrogative_pronoun][preposition]

what with 構文に関する論文を読んだ.タイトルの "the what with construction" から,てっきり「#806. what with A and what with B」 ([2011-07-12-1]) の構文のことかと思い込んでいたのだが,読んでみたらそうではなかった.いや,その構文とも無関係ではないのだが,独特な語用的含意をもって発達してきた構文ということである.分詞構文や付帯状況の with の構文の延長線上にある,比較的新しいマイナーな構文だ.この論文は,それについて構文文法 (construction_grammar) や構文化 (constructionalization) の観点から考察している.
 まず,該当する例文を挙げてみよう.Trousdale (579--80) から再現する.

(8)
a. What with the gown, the limos, and all the rest, you're probably looking at about a hundred grand.
(2009 Diane Mott Davidson, Fatally Flaky; COCA)
b. In retrospect I realize I should have known that was a bad sign, what with the Raven Mockers being set loose and all.
                                        (2009 Kristin Cast, Hunted; COCA)
c. But of course, to be fair to the girl, she wasn't herself at the Deanery, what with thinking of how Lord Hawtry's good eye had darkened when she refused his hand in marriage.
(2009 Dorothy Cannell, She Shoots to Conquer; COCA)
d. The bed was big and lonesome what with Dimmert gone.
(2009 Jan Watson, Sweetwater Run; COCA)
e. The Deloche woman was going to have one heck of a time getting rid of the place, what with the economy the way it was in Florida.
(2009 Eimilie Richards, Happiness Key; COCA)

(b)--(d) の例文については,問題の what with の後に,意味上の主語があったりなかったりするが ing 節や en 節が続くという点で,いわゆる分詞構文や付帯状況の with の構文と類似する.表面的にいえば,分詞構文の先頭に with ではなく what with という,より明示的な標識がついたような構文だ.
 Trousdale (580) によれば,what with 構文には次のような意味的・語用的特性があると先行研究で指摘されている (Trousdale 580) .

- the 'causality' function of what with is not restricted to absolutes; what with also occurs in prepositional phrases (e.g. (8a) above) and gerundive clauses (e.g. (8c) above).
- what with patterns occur in a particular pragmatic context, namely "if the matrix proposition denotes some non-event or negative state, or, more generally, some proposition which has certain negative implications (at least from the view of the speaker)".
- what with patterns typically appear with coordinated lists of 'reasons', or with general extenders such as and all in (8b) above.

この構文はマイナーながらも,それなりの歴史があるというから驚きだ.初期の例は後期中英語に見られるといい,Trousdale (587) には Gower の Confessio Amantis からの例が挙げられている.さらに水源を目指せば,この what の用法は前置詞 forwith ではないものの)と組む形で12世紀の Lambeth Homilies に見られるという.forwith だけでなく because of, between, by, from, in case (of), of, though などともペアを組んでいたようで,なんとも不思議な what の用法である.

 (1) She wants courage. (彼女には勇気がない.)
 (2) The time wants ten minutes to four. (4時10分前だ.)
 (3) The sum wanted two dollars of the desired amount. (その金額は希望額に2ドル足りなかった.)
 (4) This dirty floor wants a scrub. (この汚れた床はごしごし磨く必要がある.)
 (5) This CD player wants repairing. (このCDプレーヤーは修理の必要がある.)
 (6) Your hair wants to be cut. (君の髪の毛は刈る必要がある.)

 (5) のように動名詞が続く構文は,意味的には受け身となる点で need の用法と同じである(cf. 「#3605. This needs explaining. --- 「need +動名詞」の構文」 ([2019-03-11-1])).
名詞 want も同様で,古い「必要」の語義も周辺的ながら残っている.The homeless are in want of shelter. (ホームレスは雨露をしのげる場所を求めている.)では,wantneed に置き換えても通用する.また「欠乏,不足」の語義も for want of . . . (?不足のために)という句に残っている.これも for lack of . . . と言い換えることができる.Mother Goose の伝承童謡 (nursery rhyme) に,この句を繰り返す教訓詩として有名なものがある.

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.釘がないので蹄鉄が打てない
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.蹄鉄が打てないので馬が走れない
For want of a horse the rider was lost.馬が走れないので騎士が乗れない
For want of a rider the battle was lost.騎士が乗れないので戦いが出来ない
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.戦いが出来ないので国が滅びた
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.すべては蹄鉄の釘がなかったせい

 多義語の学習はしばしば難しいが,なぜその語が多義なのかを考えてみるとおもしろい.過去に意味変化を経てきた過程で,古い語義の上に新しい語義が蓄積されてきた可能性が高いからだ.とりわけ意味変化に強い次の辞典をそばに置いておくと便利である.

#3605. This needs explaining. --- 「need +動名詞」の構文 [gerund][participle][passive][voice][construction]

 昨日の記事「#3604. なぜ The house is building.

This machine wants repairing.
 ・ The fence requires painting.
・ A person who steals deserves punishing.
・ It doesn't bear thinking about.
・ Use every man after his desert, and who should 'scape whipping? --- Hamlet, II. ii. 555--6
・ What is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

 もちろん各々に動名詞の受動態を用いても,それはそれで意味論的にも統語的にも適格ではあるが,「構文としての響き」というべきものは失われるのかもしれない.いずれにせよニッチに生き残ってきた構文である.

#3604. なぜ The house is building. で「家は建築中である」という意味になるのか? [syntax][gerund][participle][passive][voice][category][construction][sobokunagimon]

標題の文は古風な表現ではあるが,現在でも使われることがある.「家が建てられているところだ」という受動的な意味に対応させるには,受動進行形を用いて The house is being built. となるべきではないのかと疑問に思われるかもしれない.この疑問はもっともであり,確かに後者の受動進行形の構文が標準的ではある.しかし,それでもなお,標題の The house is building. は可能だし,歴史的にはむしろ普通だった.能動態と受動態という態 (voice) の区別にうるさいはずの英語で,なぜ標題の文が許されるのだろうか.
歴史的には,The house is building.building は現在分詞ではなく動名詞である.同じ -ing 形なので紛らわしいが,両者は機能がまったく異なる.The house is building. の前段階には The house is a-building. という構文があり,さらにその前段階には The house is on building.

The whilst this play is playing --- Hamlet, III. ii. 93.
・ While grace is saying -- Merch. V., II. ii. 202
 ・ What's doing here?
 ・ The dinner is cooking.
 ・ The book is printing.
 ・ The tea is drawing.
・ The history which is making about us.

標題の問いに戻ろう.主語の the house と,building のなかに収まっているもともとの動詞 build とは,歴史的にいえば直接的な統語関係にあるわけではない.言い方をかえれば,build the house という動詞句を前提とした構文ではないということだ.一方,現代の標準的な The house is being built. は,その動詞句を前提とした構文である.つまり,2つの構文は起源がまったく異なっており,比べて合ってもしかたない代物なのである.
 現在分詞と動名詞が,まったく異なる機能をもちながらも,同じ -ing 形となっている歴史的経緯については,「#2421. 現在分詞と動名詞の協働的発達」 ([2015-12-13-1]) を参照されたい.

#3109. なぜ -(e)s の付け方と -ing の付け方が綴字において異なるのか? [suffix][spelling][sobokunagimon][3sp][plural][gerund][participle][grahotactics]

Rule VII --- Words ending in 'y' preceded by a vowel simply add 's'.
--- an adaptation rule, presumably to form the plural or 3rd pers. pres. sg.: boy -- boys, say -- says, employ -- employs.
. . . .
Rule IX --- If you want to add other letters to a word ending in 'y' preceded by a consonant change 'y' into 'i'.
--- an adaptation rule; it refers in effect to the corresponding <y>≡/aɪ/ (deny--denial); the restriction 'preceded by a consonant' is intended to rule out betray--betrayal, employ--employer. McLeod points out that it does not apply before <-ing> (denying)
Rule X -- 'i' before another 'i' becomes 'y'.
--- a graphotactic rule; presumably it refers in an oblique way to examples such as die--dying or carrying--carrier--carried; the recent loan-word skiing is an exception.
Rule XI --- Words ending in a hissing sound form their plural by adding 'es' instead of 's'.
--- this has the form of an adaptation rule. It is a recognition that <s>, unlike the <ed> of the past tense, does not represent all the allomorphs /s/, /z/ and /ɪz/ of the plural . . . .

 上記は,-(e)s, -ed, -ing の付け方の規則を共時的に記述しているにすぎず,通時的な観点も含まれていなければ,なぜそうなのかを説明してもいない.「通時的な説明」こそが必要と思われるのだが,あまり見たことがないので,おいおい考えていきたい問題である.

#2512. 動詞の目的語として不定詞を取るか,動名詞を取るか (2) [gerund][infinitive][verb][semantics][aspect]

昨日の記事 ([2016-03-12-1]) に引き続き,標題について.try, like, start, forget などの動詞は目的語として不定詞も動名詞も取ることができるが,いずれを取るかによって若干の意味の違いが現われることがあると言われる.Quirk et al. (§16.40) によると,不定詞は動詞のあらわす動作の "potentiality" を,動名詞はその実際の "performance" を含意するのが原則である.

As a rule, the infinitive gives a sense of mere 'potentiality' for action, as in She hoped to learn French, while the participle gives a sense of the actual 'performance' of the action itself, as in She enjoyed learning French. In the case of try, the double meaning is particularly clear:

Sheila tried ----+---- ''to bribe'' the jailor. [1]
                      |
                      +---- ''bribing'' the jailor. [2]

[1] implies that Sheila attempted an act of bribery, but did not manage it; [2] implies that she actually did bribe the jailor, but without (necessarily) achieving what she wanted. With other verbs, the difference is more subtle, and may be overruled or neutralized by the meaning of the verb of the main clause. For example, the negative meaning of avoid and escape cancels out the sense of 'performance' in He escaped/avoided being branded as a traitor.

He began opening all the cupboards では不定詞 to open を用いることも可能ではあるが,動名詞のほうがふさわしいという.ここには目的語の表わす動作の相という問題が関わってくるようだ.回顧動詞に関しても,相や時制が深く関与することが知られている.
