・ a beginner who has just started
 ・ free gift
・ He lives alone by himself.
 ・ hear with one's ears
 ・ helpful assistance
 ・ necessary essentials
 ・ new innovation
 ・ real truth
・ She is dumb and can not speak.
・ speak all at once together
・ the modern university of today
・ The money should be adequate enough.
・ They spoke in turn, one after the other.
・ This candidate will win or not win.
 ・ very excellent

By focusing on the types of associative relationships within a communicative transaction, we can also observe at least three important differences between the ways in which names function in daily speech vis-à-vis imaginative literature. One difference can be seen in the greater degree of prosodic inventiveness in literature. Although we may observe increasing coinages of personal names in recent years, these follow recognizable morphological patterns, but in literature, especially children's literature, we find more play with the sounds of language and fewer restraints --- for example Pooh. Another difference lies in the rhetorical uses of references, the ways in which authors sometimes manipulate the interpretive associations by delaying or totally withholding the identification of people, places, or things. A third difference is the greater frequency and degree to which names in literature may be interpreted symbolically. Our thematic understanding of literature arises largely from the symbolic nature of language, including the many associations possibly evoked by names.

人名 (personal_name),地名,eponym など.
言語権 (linguistic_right) や言語計画 (language_planning) のテーマ.

b. deafening silence n. a silence heavy with significance; spec. a conspicuous failure to respond to or comment on a matter.
1968 Sci. News 93 328/3 (heading) Deafening silence; deadly words.
1976 Survey Spring 195 The so-called mass media made public only these voices of support. There was a deafening silence about protests and about critical voices.
1985 Times 28 Aug. 5/1 Conservative and Labour MPs have complained of a 'deafening silence' over the affair.

1786 J. Andrews Hist. War with Amer. III. xxxii. 39 Neither the speech nor the motion produced any reply..and the motion [was] rejected by a silent majority of two hundred and fifty-nine.

A. Pleonasm
Kick it with one of your feet.
   A female mother.
   He was murdered illegally.

B. Dissonance
   Arthur is a married bachelor.
   Let us drink time.
Pipe ... ditties of no tone. (Keats: Ode to a Grecian Urn)
Kate was very married. (Iris Murdoch: The Nice and the Good)

C. Improbability
The kitten drank a bottle of claret.
The throne was occupied by a pipe-smoking alligator.
Arthur runs faster than the wind.

D. Zeugma
They took the door off its hinges and went through it.
Arthur and his driving licence expired last Thursday.
He was wearing a scarf, a pair of boots, and a look of considerable embarrassment.

#4851. tautology [tautology][rhetoric][logic][semantics][pragmatics][construction_grammar]

例えば a philatelist who collects stamps, These words come out successively one after another., Will you repeat that again?
tautology の構文の典型は "A is A." という形式である. Philatelists collect stamps., The man who won won., Lynda loves the boy she loves.
Philatelists collect stamps. The man who won won.

Gladness danc'd along the sky---Thompson, Epithalanium (喜びは空を踊りながら進んで行った) / Let not Ambition mock their useful toils---Gray, Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard (野心をして彼らの有益な労役を侮らせるなかれ) / O stretch thy reign, fair Peace---Pope, Windsor Forest (うるわしの平和よ,汝の領土を広げよ).
That Thame's glory to the stars shall rise!---Pope, Windsor Forest (テムズの栄光よ星まで届け) / Thy forest, Windsor!---Pope, ibid. (汝の森,ウインザーよ) / And weary waves, withdraw[n]ing from the Fight, die lull'd and panting on the silent Shore (疲れた波は戦いより退きて,物言わぬ岸の上でなだめられ,あえぎながらその身を横たえる).

personification 〔体〕(擬人化,擬人法) Fair science frowned not on his humble birth.---T.

Leech (1969) は 'an angry sky' や 'graves yawned' のように,無生物に生物の属性を付与するものを the animistic metaphor, 'this friendly river' や 'laughing valeys' のように,人間以外のものに人間特有の性質を付与するものを the humanizing [anthropomorphic] metaphor と名づけている.I.
擬人化は中世の寓意詩にまで遡ることができるが,その伝統を受けついだ Milton は "all things smil'd, With fragrance and with joy my heart oreflowd"---Paradise Lost 8: 265--66 のように,この修辞法を好んで用いた. しかし,やがてロマン派が台頭し,'the very language of men' を詩の言語たらしめることを標榜した Wordsworth は,慣習的な擬人化を 'a mechanical device of style' として斥けた (Preface to Lyrical Ballads, 1798).
The place became full of watchful intentness now; for when other things sank brooding to sleep the heath appeared slowly to awake and listen. Every night its Titanic form seemed to await something; but it had waited thus, unmoved, during so many centuries, through the crises of so many things, that it could only be imagined to await one last crisis---the final overthrow.---The Return of the Native. Bk. I, Ch. I.

(2) [plural][intensive_plural][semantics][number][category][noun][terminology][countability][poetry][latin][rhetoric]

抽象物を表す名詞の場合は程度の強いことを表し,具象物を表す名詞の場合は広がり・集積・連続などを表す: the sands of Sahara---[Kruisinga, Handbook] / the waters of the Nile---[Ibid.] / The moon was already in the heavens.---[Zandvoort, 19757] (月はすでに空で輝いていた) / I have my doubts.---[Ibid.] (私は疑念を抱いている) / I have fears that I may cease to be Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain---J. Keats (私のペンがあふれんばかりの思いを拾い集めてしまう前に死んでしまうのではないかと恐れている) / pure and clear As are the frosty skies---A Tennyson (凍てついた空のように清澄な) / Mrs. Payson's face broke into smiles of pleasure.---M. Schorer (ペイソン夫人は急に喜色満面となった) / To think is to be full of sorrow And leaden-eyed despairs---J. Keats (考えることは悲しみと活気のない目をした絶望で満たされること) / His hopes to see his own And pace the sacred old familiar fields, Not yet had perished---A. Tennyson (家族に会い,なつかしい故郷の神聖な土地を踏もうという彼の望みはまだ消え去っていなかった) / All the air is blind With rosy foam and pelting blossom and mists of driving vermeil-rain.---G. M. Hopkins (一面の大気が,ばら色の泡と激しく舞い落ちる花と篠つく朱色の雨のもやで眼もくらむほどになる) / The cry that streams out into the indifferent spaces, And never stops or slackens---W. H. Auden (冷淡な空間に流れ出ていって,絶えもしないゆるみもしない泣き声).

や Ovid (43 B.C.--A.D. 17?) Like a young Squire, in loues and lusty-hed His wanton dayes that ever loosely led, . . . Spenser, Faerie Qveene I. ii. 3 / I will go further then I meant, to plucke all feares out of you. (予定以上のことをして,あなたの心配をきれいにぬぐい去って上げよう)---Sh, Meas. for M. IV. ii. 206--7 / My hopes do shape him for the Governor. (どうやらその人はおん大将と見える)---Id, Oth. II. i. 55.

John would have a drink with his wife.

One has to earn one's bread.

部分で全体を表わすことを特に part for whole, L pars prō tōtō ということがある.blade (= sword), hand (= workman), rhyme (= poetry), roof (= house), sail (= ship), seven summers (= seven years) .

Joseph (1947a) はエリザベス朝の概念として上述のもの以外に次のようなものをあげている.(a) 全体で部分を指す (whole for part, L tōtum prō parte): creature (= man). (b) 種が属を表わす (species for genus): our daily bread (= food); gold (= wealth). (L merismus, partītiō): They first undermined the ground-sills, they beat down the walls, they unfloored the lofts---Puttenham (= A house was outrageously plucked down). (d) 材料で製品を表わす: the marble (= the statue of marble).

In rhetoric, a figure of speech concerned with parts and wholes: (1) Where the part represents the whole: 'a hundred head of cattle' (each animal identified by head alone); 'All hands on deck' (the members of a ship's crew represented by their hands alone). (2) Where the whole represents the part: 'England lost to Australia in the last Test Match' (the countries standing for the teams representing them and taking a plural verb).

adequate enough, and etc., appear on the scene, ascend up, at about (e.g. 3 p.m.), attach together, attached hereto, both alike, burn down and burn up, classified into classes, collaborate together, connect together and connect up, consolidate together, continue on and continue yet, co-operate together, couple together, debate about (v.), descend down, discuss about, divide off and divide up, drink up and drink down, early beginnings, eat up, enclosed herewith (or herein), end up, equally as, file away (commercially), final completion, final upshot, finish up (v.t. and v.i.), first begin, flood over, follow after, forbear from, forbid from, free, gratis, and for nothing, fresh beginner, from hence, from thence, from whence, funeral obsequies, gather together, good benefit, have got (for 'have' or 'possess'), hoist up, hurry up, important essentials, in between, indorce on the back, inside of, join together, joint co-operation, just exactly, just merely, just recently, lend out, link together, little birdling, meet together, mention about, merge together, mingle together, mix together, more inferior, more preferable, more superior, mutual co-operation, necessary requisite, new beginner, new creation, new departure and entirely new departure, new innovation, not a one, (it) now remains, open up (v.t.), original source, outside of, over again, over with (done, ended, finished), pair of twins, past history, peculiar freak, penetrate into, plan on (v.), polish up, practical practice, (one's) presence on the scene, proceed on(ward), protrude out, raze to the ground, really realize, recall back, reduce down, refer back, relax back, remember of, render a return, renew again, repay back, repeat again, repeat the same (e.g. story), (to) rest up, retire back, return back, revert back, revive again, rise up, seldom ever, (to) separate apart, settle up, shrink down and shrink up, sink down, steady on!, still continue, still more yet, still remain, study up, sufficient enough, swallow down, taste of (for taste, v.), termed as, than what, this next week, twice over, two halves (except when from different wholes), two twins (of one pair), uncommonly strange, unite together, used to (do something) before, we all and you all, where at, where to, whether or not, widow woman, young infant

A Short Introduction to English Grammar

The English Language, with singular propriety, following nature alone, applies the distinction of Masculine and Feminine only to the names of Animals; all the rest are Neuter: except when, by a Poetical or Rhetorical fiction, things inanimate and Qualities are exhibited as Person, and consequently become either Male or Female. And this gives the English an advantage above most other languages in the Poetical and Rhetorical Style: for when Nouns naturally Neuter are converted into Masculine and Feminine [3], the Personification is more distinctly and forcibly marked.

   [3] "At his command th'uprooted hills retir'd
Each to his place: they heard his voice and went
    (18) Obsequious: Heaven his wonted face renew'd,
And with fresh flowrets hill and valley smil'd." Milton, P. L. B. vi.
"Was I deceiv'd or did a sable cloud
Turn forth her silver lining on the Night?" Milton, Comus.
"Of Law no less can be acknowledged, than that her seat is the bosom of God; her voice, the harmony of the world. All things in heaven and earth do her homage; the very least, as feeling her care; and the greatest, as not exempted from her power." Hooker, B. i. 16. "Go to your Natural Religion: lay before her Mahomet and his disciples, arrayed in armour and in blood:---shew her the cities which he set in flames; the countries which he ravaged:---when she has viewed him in this scene, carry her into his retirements; shew her the Prophet's chamber, his concubines and his wives:---when she is tired with this prospect, then shew her the Blessed Jesus---" See the whole passage in the conclusion of Bp. Sherlock's 9th Sermon, vol. i.
Of these beautiful passages we may observe, that as in the English if you put it and its instead of his, she, her, you confound and destroy the images, and reduce, what was before highly Poetical and Rhetorical, to mere prose and common discourse; so if you render them into another language, Greek, Latin, French, Italian, or German; in which Hill, Heave, Cloud, Law, Religion, are constantly Masculine, or Feminine, or Neuter, respectively; you make the images obscure and doubtful, and in proportion diminish their beauty. This excellent remark is Mr. Harris's , HERMES, p. 58.

2. fig. Brilliant or splendid as gold, esp. in literary or rhetorical skill; spec. designating or characteristic of a highly ornamental literary style or diction (see quotes.).

1430 Lydgate tr. Hist. Troy Prol. And of my penne the traces to correcte Whiche barrayne is of aureat lycoure.
1508 W. Dunbar Goldyn Targe (Chepman & Myllar) in Poems (1998) I. 186 Your [Homer and Cicero's] aureate tongis both bene all to lyte For to compile that paradise complete.
1625 S. Purchas Pilgrimes ii. 1847 If I erre, I will beg indulgence of the Pope's aureat magnificence.
1819 T. Campbell Specimens Brit. Poets I. ii. 93 The prevailing fault of English diction, in the fifteenth century, is redundant ornament, and an affectation of anglicising Latin words. In this pedantry and use of 'aureate terms', the Scottish versifiers went even beyond their brethren of the south.
1908 G. G. Smith in Cambr. Hist. Eng. Lit. II. iv. 93 The chief effort was to transform the simpler word and phrase into 'aureate' mannerism, to 'illumine' the vernacular.
1919 J. C. Mendenhall Aureate Terms i. 7 Such long and supposedly elegant words have been dubbed ???aureate terms???, because..they represent a kind of verbal gilding of literary style. The phrase may be traced back..in the sense of long Latinical words of learned aspect, used to express a comparatively simple idea.
1936 C. S. Lewis Allegory of Love vi. 252 This peculiar brightness..is the final cause of the whole aureate style.

#3584. "The dulcet speche" としての aureate terms [lydgate][style][latin][aureate_diction][literature][terminology][rhetoric]

So that Elocucyon doth ryght well claryfy
The dulcet speche from the language rude,
Tellynge the tale in termes eloquent:
The barbry tongue it doth ferre exclude,
Electynge words which are expedyent,
In Latin or in Englyshe, after the entente,
Encensyng out the aromatyke fume,
Our langage rude to exyle and consume.

Hawes によれば,それは "The dulcet speche" であり,"the aromatyke fume" であり,"the language rude" の対極にあるものだったのだである.

#3583. "halff chongyd Latyne" としての aureate terms [lydgate][chaucer][style][latin][aureate_diction][literature][terminology][rhetoric]

 J. C. Mendenhall は,Areate Terms: A Study in the Literary Diction of the Fifteenth Century (Thesis, U of Pennsylvania, 1919) のなかで,"those new words, chiefly Romance or Latinical in origin, continually sought under authority of criticism and the best writers, for a rich and expressive style in English, from about 1350 to about 1530" (12) と定義している.
Romance of Amoryus and Cleopes

                 (314)
And yff I the trwthe schuld here wryght,
As gret a style I schuld make in euery degre
As Chauncerys off qwene Eleyne, or Cresseyd, doth endyght;
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
                 (316)
For thei that greyheryd be, affter folkys estymacion,
Nedys must be more cunne, be kendly nature,
Than he that late begynnyth, as be demonstration,
My mastyr Chauncerys, I mene, that long dyd endure
In practyk off rymyng;---qwerffore proffoundely
With many prouerbys hys bokys rymyd naturally.
                 (317)
Eke Ion Lydgate, sumtyme monke off Byry,
Hys bokys endyted with termys off retoryk
And halff chongyd Latyne, with conseytys fantastyk,
But eke hys qwyght her schewyd, and hys late werk,
How that hys contynwaunz made hym both a poyet and a clerk.

そして,引用の終わりにかけての箇所に "termys off retoryk / And halff chongyd Latyne, with conseytys fantastyk" とあるが,これはまさに areate terms の同時代的な定義といってよい.

Many a little makes a mickle. Money makes a mare to go.

The Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs

Proverbs fall readily into three main categories. Those of the first type take the form of abstract statements expressing general truths, such as Absence makes the heart grow fonder and Nature abhors a vacuum. Proverbs of the second type, which include many of the more colourful examples, use specific observations from everyday experience to make a point which is general; for instance, You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink and Don't put all your eggs in one basket. The third type of proverb comprises sayings from particular areas of traditional wisdom and folklore. In this category are found, for example, the health proverbs After dinner rest a while, after supper walk a mile and Feed a cold and starve a fever. These are frequently classical maxims rendered into the vernacular. In addition, there are traditional country proverbs which relate to husbandry, the seasons, and the weather, such as Red sky at night, shepherd's delight; red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning and When the wind is in the east, 'tis neither good for man nor beast.

Handsome is as handsome does
A proverb is a traditional saying which offers advice or presents a moral in a short and pithy manner." (xi) である.

The state of our union is . . . dumber: How the linguistic standard of the presidential address has declined
