#5111. チョーサーによるブルトン・レ「地方地主の話の序」を読む [chaucer][canterbury_tales][franklins_tale][breton_lai][me_text][celtic][breton][voicy][heldio][me_text][literature][brittany_exhibition]

 今回は Geoffrey Chaucer (1340?--1400) の傑作 The Canterbury Tales より The Franklin's Tale 「地方地主の話の序」を読んでみたい.

          THE FRANKLIN'S PROLOGUE

710Of diverse aventures maden layes,

712Whiche layes with hir instrumentz they songe
713Or elles redden hem for hir plesaunce;
714And oon of hem have I in remembraunce,
715Which I shal seyn with good wyl as I kan.
716   But, sires, by cause I am a burel man,
717At my bigynnyng first I yow biseche,
718Have me excused of my rude speche.
719I lerned nevere rethorik, certeyn;
720Thyng that I speke, it moot be bare and pleyn.
721I sleep nevere on the Mount of Pernaso,
722Ne lerned Marcus Tullius Scithero.
723Colours ne knowe I none, withouten drede,
724But swiche colours as growen in the mede,
725Or elles swiche as men dye or peynte.
726Colours of rethoryk been to me queynte;
727My spirit feeleth noght of swich mateere.
728But if yow list, my tale shul ye heere.

Nowell! [interjection][chaucer][christmas][greetings][anglo-norman][shakespeare][chaucer][sggk]

(I wish you a) merry Christmas!

1534 J. Fisher Let. 22 Dec. in T. Fuller Church Hist. Eng. (1837) v. iii. 47 And thus our Lord send yow a mery Christenmas, and a comfortable, to yowr heart desyer.
1565 J. Scudamore Let. 17 Dec. in Hereford Munic. MSS (transcript) (O.E.D. Archive) I. ii. 209 And thus I comytt you to god, who send you a mery Christmas & many.
1600 W. Shakespeare Henry IV, Pt. 2 v. iii. 36 Welcome mery shrouetide.

.OED の Nowell, int. and n.

A. int.
 A word shouted or sung: expressing joy, originally to commemorate the birth of Christ. Now only as retained in Christmas carols (cf. NOEL n.).

   c1395 G. Chaucer Franklin's Tale 1255 Biforn hym stant brawen of tosked swyn, And Nowel crieth euery lusty man.

(Sir Gawain and the Green Knight)

c1400 (?c1390) Sir Gawain & Green Knight (1940) 65 (MED) Loude crye watz þer kest of clerkez & o綻er, Nowel nayted o-newe, neuened ful ofte.

#4981. Reginald Pecock --- 史上最強の "infinitive-splitter" [split_infinitive][infinitive][syntax][word_order][pecock][chaucer][wycliffe][shakespeare]

Quite apart, however, stands Reginald Pecock, who in his Reule (c 1443), Donet (c 1445), Repressor (c. 1449), Folewer (c 1454) and Book of Faith (c 1456) not only makes such an overwhelmingly frequent use of it that he surpasses in this respect all other authors writing after him, but also outdoes them in the boldness of his 'splitting'. For apart from such patterns as 'to ech dai make him ready', 'for to in some tyme, take', 'for to the better serve thee', which are extremely common in his prose, he repeatedly inserts between to and the infinitive adverbial adjuncts and even adverbial clauses of extraordinary length, e.g. Donet 31, 17, 'What is it for to lyue þankingly to god ...? Sone, it is forto at sum whiles, whanne oþire profitabler seruycis of god schulen not þerbi be lettid, and whanne a man in his semyng haþ nede to quyke him silf in þe seid lovis to god and to him silf and nameliche to moral desires (whiche y clepe here 'loves' or 'willingnis') vpon goodis to come and to be had, seie and be aknowe to god ... þat he haþ receyued benefte or benefetis of god.') . . .
   It is not ascertainable what it was that brought Pecock, to this consistent deliberate and profuse use of the split infinitive, which in his predecessors and contemporaries only occurred occasionally, and more or less haphazardly. Neither can the fact be accounted for that he had no followers in this respect, although his works were widely read and studied.

'rum, ram, ruff' [alliteration][rhyme][chaucer][sggk][literature]

(Sir Gawain and the Green Knight) は14世紀末の中英語ロマンスですが,ほぼ同時代に書かれたジェフリー・チョーサー (Geoffrey Chaucer) の『カンタベリ物語』 (The Canterbury Tales) とは,あらゆる面で異なっています.

But trusteth wel, I am a Southren man;
I kan nat geeste 'rum, ram, ruf,' by lettre,
Ne, God woot, rym holde I but litel bettre;
And therfore, if yow list --- I wol nat glose ---
I wol yow telle a myrie tale in prose
To knytte up al this feeste and make an ende.

 khelf(慶應英語史フォーラム)による「英語史コンテンツ50」が終盤を迎えている.

OF ENGLISH VERSE.

1 Poets may boast, as safely vain,
2 Their works shall with the world remain;
3 Both, bound together, live or die,
4 The verses and the prophecy.

5 But who can hope his lines should long
6 Last in a daily changing tongue?
7 While they are new, envy prevails;
8 And as that dies, our language fails.

9 When architects have done their part,
10 The matter may betray their art;
11 Time, if we use ill-chosen stone,
12 Soon brings a well-built palace down.

13 Poets that lasting marble seek,
14 Must carve in Latin, or in Greek;
15 We write in sand, our language grows,
16 And, like the tide, our work o'erflows.

17 Chaucer his sense can only boast;
18 The glory of his numbers lost!
19 Years have defaced his matchless strain;
20 And yet he did not sing in vain.

21 The beauties which adorned that age,
22 The shining subjects of his rage,
23 Hoping they should immortal prove,
24 Rewarded with success his love.

25 This was the generous poet's scope;
26 And all an English pen can hope,
27 To make the fair approve his flame,
28 That can so far extend their fame.

29 Verse, thus designed, has no ill fate,
30 If it arrive but at the date
31 Of fading beauty; if it prove
32 But as long-lived as present love.

 Chaucer における melancholy の最たる事例の1つとして,The Canterbury Tales の Knight's Tale より,恋の病に陥った Arcite が「憂鬱」に犯されているシーンをみてみよう (I(A), 1361--76) .

His slep, his mete, his drynke, is hym biraft,
That lene he wex and drye as is a shaft;
His eyen holwe and grisly to biholde,
His hewe falow and pale as asshen colde,
And solitarie he was and evere allone,
And waillynge al the nyght, makynge his mone;
And if he herde song or instrument,
Thanne wolde he wepe, he myghte nat be stent.
So feble eek were his spiritz, and so lowe,
And chaunged so, that no man koude knowe
His speche nor his voys, though men it herde.
And in his geere for al the world he ferede
Nat oonly lik the loveris maladye
Of Hereos, but rather lyk manye,
Engendred of humour malencolik
Biforen, in his celle fantastic.

[shakespeare][conversion][chaucer][bible]

The emergence of the English vernacular as a culturally valorized and legitimate form took place in the Renaissance period. It is possible to trace in the comments of three major writers of the time the origins of a persistent set of problems which later became attached to the term "standard English." Following the introduction of Thomas Wilson's phrase "the king's English" in 1553, the principal statement of the idea of a centralized form of the language in the Renaissance was George Puttenham's determination in 1589 of the "natural, pure and most usual" type of English to be used by poets: "that usual speech of the court, and that of London and the shires lying about London, within lx miles and not much above" (Puttenham 1936: 144--5). In the following decade the poet and colonial servant Edmund Spenser composed A View of the State of Ireland (1596) during the height of the decisive Nine Years War between the English colonists in Ireland and the natives. In the course of his wide-ranging analysis of the difficulties facing English rule, Spenser offers a diagnosis of one of the most serious causes of English "degeneration" (a term often used in Tudor debates on Ireland to refer to the Gaelicization of the colonists): "first, I have to finde fault with the abuse of language, that is, for the speaking of Irish among the English, which, as it is unnaturall that any people should love anothers language more than their owne, so it is very inconvenient, and the cause of many other evils" (Spenser 1633: 47). Given Spenser's belief that language and identity were linked ("the speech being Irish, the heart must needes bee Irish), his answer was the Anglicization of Ireland. He therefore recommended the adoption of Roman imperial practice, since "it hath ever been the use of the Conquerour, to despise the language of the conquered, and to force him by all means to use his" (Spencer 1633: 47).
   There are several notable features to be drawn from these Renaissance observations on English, a language which, it should be recalled, was being studied seriously and codified in its own right for the first time in this period. The first point is the social and geographic basis of Wilson and Puttenham's accounts. Wilson's phrase "the king's English" was formed by analogy with "the king's peace" and "the king's highway," both of which had an original sense of being restricted to the legal and geographic areas which were guaranteed by the crown; only with the successful centralization of power in the figure of the monarch did such phrases come to have general rather than specific reference. Puttenham's version of the "best English" is likewise demarcated in terms of space and class: his account reduces it to the speech of the court and the area in and around London up to a boundary of 60 miles. A second point to note is that Puttenham's definition conflates speech and writing: its model of the written language, to be used by poets, is the speech of courtiers. And the final detail is the implicit link between the English language and English ethnicity which is evoked by Spenser's comments on the degeneration of the colonist in Ireland. These characteristics of Renaissance thinking on English (its delimitation with regard to class and region, the failure to distinguish between speech and writing, and the connection between language and ethnicity) were characteristics which would be closely associated with the language throughout its modern history.

#4049. 科学誌 Nature に掲載された The Canterbury Tales の系統学 [chaucer][reconstruction][manuscript][textual_transmission][family_tree][linguistics][philology]

From this analysis and other evidence, we deduce that the ancestor of the whole tradition, Chaucer's own copy, was not a finished or fair copy, but a working draft containing (for example) Chaucer's own notes of passages to be deleted or added, and alternative drafts of sections. In time, this may lead editors to produce a radically different text of The Canterbury Tales. (Barbrook et. al 839)

Dryden [popular_passage][dryden][chaucer][inflection][final_e]

The verse of Chaucer, I confess, is not harmonious to us . . . there is the rude sweetness of a Scotch tune in it, which is natural and pleasing, though not perfect. It is true, I cannot go so far as he who published the last edition of him; for he would make us believe the fault is in our ears, and that there were really ten syllables in a verse where we find but nine. But this opinion is not worth confuting; it is so gross and obvious an errour, that common sense (which is rare in everything but matters of faith and revelation) must convince the reader, that equality of numbers in every verse which we call heroic, was either not known, or not always practiced in Chaucer's age.

#3583. "halff chongyd Latyne" としての aureate terms [lydgate][chaucer][style][latin][aureate_diction][literature][terminology][rhetoric]

 J. C. Mendenhall は,Areate Terms: A Study in the Literary Diction of the Fifteenth Century (Thesis, U of Pennsylvania, 1919) のなかで,"those new words, chiefly Romance or Latinical in origin, continually sought under authority of criticism and the best writers, for a rich and expressive style in English, from about 1350 to about 1530" (12) と定義している.
Romance of Amoryus and Cleopes

                 (314)
And yff I the trwthe schuld here wryght,
As gret a style I schuld make in euery degre
As Chauncerys off qwene Eleyne, or Cresseyd, doth endyght;
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
                 (316)
For thei that greyheryd be, affter folkys estymacion,
Nedys must be more cunne, be kendly nature,
Than he that late begynnyth, as be demonstration,
My mastyr Chauncerys, I mene, that long dyd endure
In practyk off rymyng;---qwerffore proffoundely
With many prouerbys hys bokys rymyd naturally.
                 (317)
Eke Ion Lydgate, sumtyme monke off Byry,
Hys bokys endyted with termys off retoryk
And halff chongyd Latyne, with conseytys fantastyk,
But eke hys qwyght her schewyd, and hys late werk,
How that hys contynwaunz made hym both a poyet and a clerk.

そして,引用の終わりにかけての箇所に "termys off retoryk / And halff chongyd Latyne, with conseytys fantastyk" とあるが,これはまさに areate terms の同時代的な定義といってよい.

Chancery Standard (2) [standardisation][politics][monarch][chancery_standard][lancastrian][chaucer][lydgate][hoccleve][language_planning]

Hoccleve, no more than Lydgate, ever articulated for the Lancastrian rulers a policy of encouraging the development of English as a national language or of citing Chaucer as the exemplar for such a policy. But we have the documentary and literary evidence of what happened. The linkage of praise for Prince Henry as a model ruler concerned about the use of English and for master Chaucer as the "firste fyndere of our faire langage"; the sudden appearance of manuscripts of The Canterbury Tales, Troylus and Criseyde, and other English writings composed earlier but never before published; the conversion to English of the Signet clerks of Henry V, the Chancery clerks, and eventually the guild clerks; and the burgeoning of composition in English and the patronage of literature in English by the Lancastrian court circle are all concurrent historical events. The only question is whether their concurrence was coincidental or deliberate. (34)

All linguistic changes of this sort for which we have documentation---in Norway, India, Canada, Finland, Israel, or elsewhere---have been the result of planning and official policy. There is no reason to suppose that the situation was different in England.

#3196. 中英語期の主要な出来事の年表 [timeline][me][history][chronology][norman_conquest][reestablishment_of_english][monarch][hundred_years_war][black_death][wycliffe][chaucer][caxton]

1066The Normans conquered England, replacing the native English nobility with Anglo-Normans and introducing Norman French as the language of government in England.
1204King John lost Normandy to the French, beginning the loosening of ties between England and the Continent.
1258King Henry III was forced by his barons to accept the Provisions of Oxford, which established a Privy Council to oversee the administration of the government, beginning the growth of the English constitution and parliament.
1337The Hundred Years' War with France began and lasted until 1453, promoting English nationalism
1348--50The Black Death killed an estimated one-third of England's population, and continued to plague the country for much of the rest of the century
1362The Statute of Pleadings was enacted, requiring all court proceedings to be conducted in English.
1381The Peasants' Revolt led by Wat Tyler was the first rebellion of working-class people against their exploitation; although it failed in most of its immediate aims, it marks the beginning of popular protest.
1384John Wycliffe died, having promoted the first complete translation of scripture into the English language (the Wycliffite Bible).
1400Geoffrey Chaucer died, having produced a highly influential body of English poetry.
1476William Caxton, the first English printer, established his press at Westminster, thus beginning the widespread dissemination of English literature and the stabilization of the written standard.
1485Henry Tudor became king of England, ending thirty years of civil strife and initiating the Tudor dynasty.

#3057. "The Pardoner's Tale" にみる黒死病 [chaucer][black_death][literature][popular_passage]

   Thise riotoures three of whiche I tell,
Longe erst er prime rong of any belle,
Were set hem in a taverne to drynke,
And as they sat, they herde a bell clynke
Biforn a cors, was caried to his grave.
That oon of hem gan callen to his knave:
"Go bet," quod he, "and axe redily
What cors is this that passeth heer forby;
And looke that thou reporte his name weel."
   "Sir," quod this boy, "it nedeth never-a-deel;
It was me toold er ye cam heer two houres.
He was, pardee, an old felawe of youres,
And sodeynly he was yslayn to-nyght,
Fordronke, as he sat on his bench upright.
There cam a privee theef men clepeth Deeth,
That in this contree al the peple sleeth,
And with his spere he smoot his herte atwo,
And wente his wey withouten wordes mo.
He hath a thousand slayn this pestilence.
And, maister, er ye come in his presence,
Me thynketh that it were necessarie
For to be war of swich an adversarie.
Beth redy for to meete hym everemoore;
Thus taughte me my dame; I sey namoore."
"By Seinte Marie!" seyde this taverner,
"The child seith sooth, for he hath slayn this yeer,
Henne over a mile, withinne a greet village,
Bothe mam and womman, child, and hyne, and page;
I trowe his habitacioun be there.
To been avysed greet wysdom it were,
Er that he dide a man a dishonour."
