#5404. 言語は名詞から始まったのか,動詞から始まったのか? [homo_sapiens][origin_of_language][evolution][history_of_linguistics][grammaticalisation][noun][verb][category][name_project][onomastics][naming]

 標題は解決しようのない疑問ではあるが,言語学史 (history_of_linguistics) においては言語の起源 (origin_of_language) をめぐる議論のなかで時々言及されてきた問いである.
Mufwene (22) を参照して,2人の論者とその見解を紹介したい.ドイツの哲学者 Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744--1803) とアメリカの言語学者 William Dwight Whitney (1827--94) である.

Herder also speculated that language started with the practice of naming. He claimed that predicates, which denote activities and conditions, were the first names; nouns were derived from them . . . . He thus partly anticipated Heine and Kuteva (2007), who argue that grammar emerged gradually, through the grammaticization of nouns and verbs into grammatical markers, including complementizers, which make it possible to form complex sentences. An issue arising from Herder's position is whether nouns and verbs could not have emerged concurrently. . . .
On the other hand, as hypothesized by William Dwight Whitney . . . , the original naming practice need not have entailed the distinction between nouns and verbs and the capacity to predicate. At the same time, naming may have amounted to pointing with (pre-)linguistic signs; predication may have started only after hominins were capable of describing states of affairs compositionally, combining word-size units in this case, rather than holophrastically.

 OEDmethinks, v. の異形態欄にて γ 系列の形態として掲げられている5つの例文を引用します.

a1616 Me thoughts that I had broken from the Tower. (W. Shakespeare, Richard III (1623) i. iv. 9)
1620 The draught of a Landskip on a piece of paper, me thoughts masterly done. (H. Wotton, Letter in Reliquiæ Wottonianæ (1651) 413)
1673 I had..coyned several new English Words, which were onely such French Words as methoughts had a fine Tone wieh them. (F. Kirkman, Unlucky Citizen 181)
1711 Methoughts I was transported into a Country that was filled with Prodigies. (J. Addison, Spectator No. 63. ¶3)
1751 The inward Satisfaction which I felt, had spread in my Eyes I know not what of melting and passionate, which methoughts I had never before observed. (translation of Female Foundling vol. I. 30)

[3ps][impersonal_verb][verb][syntax][inflection][hc][agreement][analogy][shakespeare][methinks]

(10) þe þincheð þat he ne mihte his sinne forlete.
'It seems to you that he might not relinquish his sin.'
       (MX/1 Ir Hom Trin 12, 73)

(11) Thy wombe is waxen grete, thynke me.
'Your womb has grown big. You seem to be pregnant.'
       (M4 XX Myst York 119)

(12) My lord me thynketh / my lady here hath saide to you trouthe and gyuen yow good counseyl [...]
       (M4 Ni Fict Reynard 54)

(13) I se on the firmament, Me thynk, the seven starnes.
       (M4 XX Myst Town 25)

a1616 Meethink'st thou art a generall offence, and euery man shold beate thee. (W. Shakespeare, All's Well that ends Well (1623) ii. iii. 251)

(3) [transitivity][termonology][verb][grammar][syntax][construction][semantic_role][semantics]

 他動性 (transitivity) について,2回にわたって論じてきた.

 ・ 「#5202. 他動性 (transitivity) とは何か?」 ([2023-07-25-1])
 ・ 「#5204. 他動性 (transitivity) とは何か? (2)」 [2023-07-27-1]

今回は Bussmann (494--95) の用語辞典より transitivity の項を引用する.

Valence property of verbs which require a direct object, e.g. read, see, hear. Used more broadly, verbs which govern other objects (e.g. dative, genitive) can also be termed 'transitive'; while only verbs which have no object at all (e.g. sleep, rain) would be intransitive. Hopper and Thompson (1980) introduce other factors of transitivity in the framework of universal grammar, which result in a graduated concept of transitivity. In addition to the selection of a direct object, other semantic roles as well as the properties of adverbials, mood, affirmation vs negation, and aspect play a role. A maximally transitive sentence contains a non-negated resultive verb in the indicative which requires at least a subject and direct object; the verb complements function as agent and affected object, are definite and animate . . . . Using data from various languages, Hopper and Thompson demonstrate that each of the factors listed above as affecting transitivity is important for making transivtivity through case, adpositions, or verbal inflection. Thus in many languages (e.g. Lithuanian, Polish, Middle High German) affirmation vs negation correlates with the selection of case for objects in such a way that in affirmative sentences the object is usually in the accusative, while in negated sentences the object of the same verb occurs in the genitive or in another oblique case.

 他動性とは,(1) グラデーションであること,(2) 言語によってその具現化の方法は様々であること,が分かってきた.理論的には,対格目的語を要求する,結果を表わす直説法の肯定動詞が,最大限に "transitive" であるということだ.

#5204. 他動性 (transitivity) とは何か? (2) [transitivity][termonology][verb][grammar][syntax][construction][semantic_role][semantics][philosophy_of_language]

Transitivity A term used mainly in systemic functional linguistics to refer to the system of grammatical choices available in language for representing actions, events, experiences and relationships in the world . . . .
There are three components in a transitivity process: the process type (the process or state represented by the verb phrase in a clause), the participant(s) (people, things or concepts involved in a process or experiencing a state) and the circumstance (elements augmenting the clause, providing information about extent, location, manner, cause, contingency and so on). So in the clause 'Mary and Jim ate fish and chips on Friday', the process is represented by 'ate', the participants are 'Mary and Jim' and the circumstances are 'on Friday'.
Halliday and Mtthiesen (2004) identify three main process types, material, mental and relational, and three minor types, behavioural, verbal and existential. Associated with each process are certain kinds of participants. 1) Material processes refer to actions and events. The verb in a material process clause is usually a 'doing' word . . .: Elinor grabbed a fire extinguisher; She kicked Marina. Participants in material processes include actor ('Elinor', 'she') and goal ('a fire extinguisher', 'Marina'). 2) Metal processes refer to states of mind or psychological experiences. The verb in a mental process clause is usually a mental verb: I can't remember his name; Our party believes in choice. Participants in mental processes include senser(s) ('I'; 'our party') and phenomenon ('his name'; 'choice'). 3) Relational processes commonly ascribe an attribute to an entity, or identify it: Something smells awful in here; My name is Scruff. The verb in a relational processes include token ('something', 'my name')) and value ('Scruff', 'awful'). 4) Behavioural processes are concerned with the behaviour of a participant who is a conscious entity. They lie somewhere between material and mental processes. The verb in a behavioural process clause is usually intransitive, and semantically it refers to a process of consciousness or a physiological state: Many survivors are sleeping in the open; The baby cried. The participant in a behavioral process is called a behaver. 5) Verbal processes are processes of verbal action: 'Really?', said Septimus Coffin; He told them a story about a gooseberry in a lift. Participants in verbal processes include sayer ('Septimus Coffin', 'he'), verbiage ('really', 'a story') an recipient ('them'). 6) Existential processes report the existence of someone or something. Only one participant is involved in an existential process: the existent. There are two main grammatical forms for this type of process: existential there as subject + copular verb (There are thousands of examples.); and existent as subject + copular verb (Maureen was at home.)

[transitivity][termonology][verb][mood][grammar][syntax][construction]

『新英語学辞典』 (1267) によると,他動性 (transitivity) は Halliday の文法理論における用語で,法 (mood) と主題 (theme) とともに Halliday 文法における3つの大きな体系網を構成する.他動性とは,他動詞 (transitive verb) と自動詞 (intransitive verb) の区別に対応する概念というよりも,むしろ節に参与する要素間の「関与性」ととらえるほうが適切だろう.
例えば Sir Chirstopher Wren built this bridge.

transitivity (n.) A category used in the grammatical analysis of clause/sentence constructions, with particular reference to the verb's relationship to dependent elements of structure. The main members of this category are transitive (tr, trans), referring to a verb which can take a direct object (as in he saw the dog), and intransitive (intr, intrans), where it cannot (as in *he arrived a ball). Many verbs can have both a transitive and an intransitive use (cf. we went a mile v. we went), and in some languages this distinction is marked morphologically. More complex relationships between a verb and the elements dependent upon it are usually classified separately. For example, verbs which take two objects are sometimes called ditransitive (as opposed to monotransitive), as in she gave me a pencil. There are also several uses of verbs which are marginal to one or other of these categories, as in pseudo-intranstive constructions (e.g. the eggs are selling well, where an agent is assumed --- 'someone is selling the eggs' --- unlike normal intransitive constructions, which do not have an agent transform: we went, but not *someone went us). Some grammarians also talk about (in)transitive prepositions. For example, with is a transitive preposition, as it must always be accompanied by a noun phrase complement (object), and along can be transitive or intransitive: cf. She arrived with a dog v. *She arrived with and She was walking along the river v. She was walking along.

 indicativesubjunctiveimperative
active   infinitive -a-ną
sg.1 -ō-a-ų---participle -a-nd-
 2 -i-zi-ai-zø
 3 -i-di-ai-ø-a-dau
du.1 -ōz(?)-ai-w---
 2 -a-diz(?)-a-diz(?)-a-diz(?)
pl.1 -a-maz-ai-m---
 2 -i-d-ai-d-i-d
 3 a-ndi-ai-n-a-ndau

There was a lot about fairies long ago [...] but I'm thinkin' that most of 'em are vanished.
・ I remember my granfather and old people that lived down the road here, they be all walking over to the chapel of a Sunday afternoon and they be going again at night.
・ But they, I heard my father and uncle saying they used be dancing there long ago, like, you know.
・ Yeah, that's, that's the camp. Military camp they call it [...] They do be shooting there couple of times a week or so.

これらは現代のケルト変種の英語に見られる進行形の多用という現象を示すものであり,事実として受け入れられる.しかし,ケルト語仮説の要点は,中英語における進行形の発達そのものが基層のケルト語の影響によるものだということだ.前者と後者は注目している時代も側面も異なっていることに注意したい.それでも,Filppula and Klemola (218--19) は,次の5つの論点を挙げながら,ケルト語仮説を支持する(引用中の PF は "progressive forms" を指す).

(i) Of all the suggested parallels to the English PF, the Celtic (Brythonic) ones are clearly the closest, and hence, the most plausible ones, whether one think of the OE periphrastic constructions or those established in the ME and modern periods, involving the -ing form of verbs. This fact has not been given due weight in some of the earlier work on this subject.
(ii) The chronological precedence of the Celtic constructions is beyond any reasonable doubt, which also enhances the probability of contact influence from Celtic on English.
(iii) The socio-historical circumstances of the Celtic-English interface cannot have constituted an obstacle to Celtic substratum influences in the area of grammar, as has traditionally been argued especially on the basis of the research (and some of the earlier, too) has shown that the language shift situation in the centuries following the settlement of the Germanic tribes in Britain was most conductive to such influences. Again, this aspect has been ignored or not properly understood in some of the research which has tried to play down the role of Celtic influence in the history of English.
(iv) The Celtic-English contacts in the modern period have resulted in a similar tendency for some regional varieties of English to make extensive use of the PF, which lends indirect support to the Celtic hypothesis with regard to early English.
(v) Continuous tenses tend to be used more in bilingual or formerly Celtic-speaking areas than in other parts of the country . . . .

 (1) A girl ran up. 「ある少女が駆け寄ってきた」
    ran up が全体として1つの自動詞に相当する.
 (2) The spider ran up the wall. 「そのクモは壁を登っていった」
自動詞 ran と前置詞句 up the wall の組み合わせである.
 (3) The soldier ran up a flag. 「その兵士は旗を掲げた」
ran up の組み合わせにより1つの他動詞に相当し,目的語を取る.この場合,小辞 up と名詞句の目的語 a flag の位置はリバーシブルで,The soldier ran a flag up. の語順も可能.ただし,目的語が it のような代名詞の場合には,むしろ The soldier ran it up. の語順のみが許容される.
 (4) Would you mind running me up the road? 「道路の先まで車に乗せていっていただけませんか」
他動詞 run と前置詞句 up the road の組み合わせである.

 runup の組み合わせのみに限定しても,このように4つの型が認められる.他の動詞と他の小辞の組み合わせの全体を考慮すれば,型としては8つの型があり,きわめて複雑となる.

#5013. When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman? の動詞形態を英語史する [proverb][verb][conjugation][rhyme][vowel][rhythm]

昨日の記事「#5012. When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?

When Adam delved and Eve Span / who was then the gentleman?

c 1340 R. Rolle in G. G. perry Religious Pieces (EETS) 88 When Adam dalfe [dug] and Eue spane ... Whare was than the pride of man?

  ところが,14世紀後半から弱変化化した過去形が現われ始め,やがて近代になると,この諺でも delved が用いられ始めた.

 (4) 標題の現代標準の諺のリズム (rhythm) を示すと次のようになる.

whenAdamdelvedandEvespan
/x/x/x/
whowasthenthegentleman

 必ずしもきれいではないし,(2) でも述べたように厳密には脚韻も踏まない.一方,中英語のオリジナルの諺を再建するならば,次の通りのリズムとなるだろう.これであれば脚韻もピタッと揃って美しい.
whenAdamdalfandEvespan
(x)/x/x/x/
 whowasthenthegentleman

17 /aɪz/ in verbs as <-ise>, <-ize>

The <-ize> spelling reflects a Greek verbal ending in English words, such as baptize, organize, which represent actual Greek verbs. There are also words that have been made up to imitate Greek, in later Latin or in French (humanise), or within English itself (bowdlerise). Some printers adopt a purist approach and spell the first group with <-ize> and the second group with <-ise>, others have <-ize> for both.
Since this difference is opaque to the ordinary speller, there is pressure to standardize on the <s> spelling, as French has done. To standardize with a <z> spelling as American spelling has done has disadvantages, because there are §Latinate verbs ending in <-ise> which have historically nothing to do with this suffix: advertise, apprise, circumcise, comprise, supervise, surmise, surprise. If you opt for a scholarly <organize>, you are likely to get an unscholarly *<supervize>. The OED argues that the pronunciation is /z/ and that this justifies the <z> spelling. But this ignores the fact that <s>≡/z/ happens to be the commonest spelling of /z/. To introduce more <z> spellings would probably complicate matters for the speller.

          The suffix -IZE/-ISE

There are some 200 verbs in general use ending in the suffix -ISE/-IZE, spelt with Z in American usage and s or z in British usage. The ending originated in Gr with z, which was transmitted through Lat and OFr to Eng beginning in the ME period.

・ Three factors interfered with the straightforward adoption of z for all the words ending in /aɪz/:
   - The increasing variation of z/s in OFr and ME.
   - The competing model of words like surprise, always spelt with s (-ISE in those words being not the Gr suffix but part of a Franco-Lat stem).
   - Developments in Fr which undermined the z-spelling of the Gr -IZE suffix; for example, the 1694 edition of the authoritative dictionary of the Académie Française standardized the spelling of the Gr suffix with s (e.g. baptiser, organiser, réaliser) for ModFr in accordance with the general Fr rule for the spelling of /z/ between vowels as s, and the consistent use of -ISE by ModFr from then on gave weight to a widespread preference for it in British usage. American usage, on the other hand, came down steadfastly on the side of -IZE, and BrE now allows either spelling.

In the Greek -ιζ-, the i was short, so originally in Latin, but the double consonant z (= dz, ts) made the syllable long; when the z became a simple consonant, /-idz/ became īz, whence English /-aɪz/.

#4936. なぜ間接目的語や前置詞の目的語が主語となる受動文が可能なのか? [passive][syntax][inflection][verb][me][sobokunagimon][word_order]

1 The book was selected by the committee
2 Nicaragua was given the opportunity to protest
3 His plans were laughed at
4 The library was set fire to by accident

There are two general paths along which one could look for an explanation of these developments. One can hypothesise that there was a change in the nature of the rule that generates passive constructions . . . Another possibility is that there was a change in the application of the rule due to changes having taken place elsewhere in the system of the language . . . The latter course seems to be the one now more generally followed. Additional factors that may have influenced the spread of passive construction are the gradual loss of the Old English active construction with indefinite man . . . (this construction could most easily be replaced by a passive) and the change in word order . . . .

 統語変化の仮説の設定と検証は,なかなか容易ではありません.そのために英語史という専門分野があり,日々研究が続けられているのです.

#4880. 「定動詞」「非定動詞」という用語はややこしい [category][verb][finiteness][article][terminology][agreement][tense][number][person][mood][adjective]

英語の動詞 (verb) に関するカテゴリーの1つに定性 (finiteness) というものがある.動詞の定形 (finite form) とは,I go to school. She goes to school. He went to school. のような動詞 go の「定まった」現われを指す.一方,動詞の非定形 (nonfinite form) とは,I'm going to school. Going to school is fun. She wants to go to school. He made me go to school.
例えば He ( ) to school yesterday.

The forms of the verb . . . , and the phrases they are part of, are usually classified into two broad types, based on the kind of contrast in meaning they express. The notion of finiteness is the traditional way of classifying the differences. This term suggests that verbs can be 'limited' in some way, and this is in fact what happens when different kinds of endings are used.
・ The finite forms are those which limit the verb to a particular number, tense, person, or mood. For example, when the -s form is used, the verb is limited to the third person singular of the present tense, as in goes and runs. If there is a series of verbs in the verb phrase, the finite verb is always the first, as in I was being asked.
・ The nonfinite forms do not limit the verb in this way. For example, when the -ing form is used, the verb can be referring to any number, tense, person, or mood:

I'm leaving (first person, singular, present)
They're leaving (third person, plural, present)
He was leaving (third person, singular, past)
We might be leaving tomorrow (first person, plural, future, tentative)

As these examples show, a nonfinite form of the verb stays the same in a clause, regardless of the grammatical variation taking place alongside it.

 1. 意味役割 (semantic_role)
 2. 語彙概念構造 (lexical conceptual structure)
 3. アスペクト (aspect)

 1つめの意味役割とは,動詞の意味を成立させる各要素(=項 (argument))それぞれに割り振られた意味上の機能である.動作主 (Agent),対象 (Theme),場所 (Location),起点 (Source),着点 (Goal) などいくつかが設定されている.例えば Marvin traveled from Boston to San Francisco.

a. [±dynamic]:動的 (dynamic) / 静的 (static)
b. [±punctual]:瞬間的 (punctual) / 継続的 (durative)
c. [±telic]:完結的 (telic) / 非完結的 (atelic)

 次に,これらの3つの意味素性を組み合わせ,動詞の相を4種類に分類してみる.小野 (142) の表に例文を加えたものを示そう.

 dynamicpunctualtelicex.
a. 状態 (State)---Marvin resembled his mother.
b. 活動 (Activity)+--Marvin walked.
c. 達成 (Accomplishment)+-+Marvin built a house.
d. 到達 (Achievement)+++Marvin arrived.

#4852. 人称にかかわらず動詞に -s 語尾が付される方言 [3sp][3pp][conjugation][verb][inflection][historic_present]

I likes it., We goes home., You throws it. などと -s 語尾が常用される.do という本動詞・助動詞についていえば,イングランド西部の方言では,本動詞としては常に dos /du:z/ が,助動詞としては常に do が使われるというように,用法が分かれているという (ex. He dos it every day, do he?) .ちなみに,この方言では本動詞としての過去形は done,助動詞としての過去形は did を用いるというから,なおさらおもしろい (ex. He done it last night, did he?) .
上記とは別に,スコットランドや北アイルランドの多くの方言では,1・2人称,および3人称複数において,過去の出来事を生き生きと述べる「歴史的現在」 (historic_present) の用法として,動詞語尾に -s が現われる (ex. I goes down this street and I sees this man hiding behind a tree.) .
 以上,Hughes et al. (28--29) に依拠して記述した.

#4827. 『中高生の基礎英語 in English』の連載第17回「なぜ「時・条件を表す副詞節」では未来のことも現在形?」 [notice][sobokunagimon][rensai][subjunctive][verb][tense][link][conditional][be][mood][future]

 『中高生の基礎英語 in English』の8月号が発売となりました.連載「歴史で謎解き 英語のソボクな疑問」の第17回は「なぜ「時・条件を表す副詞節」では未来のことも現在形?」です.

『中高生の基礎英語 in English』2022年8月号

If it is fine tomorrow, I will go shopping. のような文で,明らかに「明日」という未来のことなのに,*If it will be fine tomorrow, . . . . のように will は用いないことになっています.これは,学校文法のヘンテコな規則の最たるものの1つでしょう.英語は一般に現在・過去・未来と時制 (tense) にうるさい言語なのですが,その割には「時・条件を表す副詞節」だけが特別扱いされているようで理解に苦しみます.
 しかし,この疑問は,英語史の観点から迫ると見方が変わります.古くは「時制」の問題というよりは「法」 (mood) の問題だったからです.近代英語までは上記の文は If it be fine tomorrow, . . . . のように「仮定法現在」を用いていました.その後,仮定法(現在)の衰退が進み,直説法(現在)で置き換えられた結果 If it is fine tomorrow, . . . .
