■ #6180. 古英語・中英語における most の異形の方言分布 [oed][adjective][adverb][comparison][superlative][oe_dialect][me_dialect][oe][germanic][analogy]

　標題は，すでに「#1307. most と mest」 ([2012-11-24-1]) でも，OED の most (ADJECTIVE, PRONOUN, NOUN, & ADVERB)を参照しつつ触れたことがあるが，改めて OED の注記の解説をじっくり読んでおきたい．

Old English māst, the normal Old English development of the Germanic form, is attested only in Northumbrian, but it is not certain whether it existed only in that region. The vowel quality of the usual Old English form (West Saxon mǣst, Kentish mēst) is unusual. It may have been formed by analogy with lǣst least adj. (or perhaps by i-mutation from an earlier form in ā, although this presents phonological difficulties). The reflex of this form survived in the south until the 15th cent. The establishment of the (originally northern) form most as the only form in the midlands and south was probably due to the influence of the related mo adv.¹ and more adj.

　古英語 West Saxon 方言などで示される前舌母音は反対語である lǣst からの類推かもしれないと述べつつ，中英語南部方言などでも後舌母音が一般化してきた背景には，今度は mo, more からの類推があったのではないかと述べているなど，一貫した説明は難しいようである．
　OED の注記には，母音の量に関する言及もあるので，参考までに引用しておく．

Some forms show early shortening of the vowel before the consonant cluster -st (e.g. masst in the β forms, must in the γ forms). Some early Middle English examples of mast from southern texts probably also show a shortening of Old English ǣ (compare α forms). Occasional forms (e.g. Older Scots mest, messt in the β forms) probably show the influence of early Scandinavian.

　最上級接尾辞の -est は，「#6170. 形容詞の比較級 -er と最上級 -est の起源を求めて」 ([2026-03-19-1]) で見たように，起源となるゲルマン祖語における2つのタイプのうち前母音をもつ系列が一般化したものといってよい．一方，最上級を作る副詞 most は，むしろ後母音をもつ系列が一般化した．この対比は歴史の偶然だろうとは思われるが，古英語での -est と -ost の混在や，中英語での接尾辞としての -mest と -most の混同などの事実を念頭におくと，興味深い．
