■ #6174. 副詞の比較級 -er と最上級 -est の起源を求めて [adverb][adjective][comparison][superlative][oe][germanic][suffix][rhotacism]

　「#6170. 形容詞の比較級 -er と最上級 -est の起源を求めて」 ([2026-03-19-1]) を受けて，今回は同形となる副詞に付く接尾辞 -er, -est の起源を考える．比較言語学的には別々に見ていく必要があるからだ．
　Lass (§8.4.2; p. 208) より，関連する2段落を引用する．古英語の副詞の比較級・最上級について論じている箇所だ．

   Comparison of adverbs is usually in {-or}, {-ost}, occasionally spelled <-ur, -ar, -ust, -st>; the comparative reflects a PGmc */-o:-z/ (Go -ōs). By normal WGmc sound changes (as in the a-stem nom sg */-α-z/), the /r/ should have disappeared in OE; it is most likely retained by analogy to adjectival comparison.
   The superlative has the same vowel, but with the presumably adjectival superlative suffix */-st-/; in many cases there is an */-m-/ formative as well, giving a double superlative: inne-m-est 'inmost', ūte-m-est 'outmost' (cf. inne 'inside', ūte 'outside'). The simplex type can be seen in for-m-a 'first' (cf. for-e 'in front', and the discussion of ordinal numerals in §8.4.3), hinde-m-a 'last' (hinder 'behind'). This */-m-/ occurs in Gothic as well (fru-m-ist-s 'first'), though not elsewhere in West Germanic; it is an old IE marker, and can be seen in the Latin parallel to for-m-a, fru-m-ist-s, ie. pri-m-u-s 'first'.

　これを念頭に，先日の記事 ([2026-03-19-1]) と合わせて，形容詞・副詞の比較級・最上級接尾辞について，その起源と発達を整理してみたい．

　・ 形容詞の比較級接尾辞 -er: AタイプとBタイプの混合．Bタイプの起源について定かではないが，副詞を形成した o-stem の奪格語尾の反映形を含むか．
　・ 副詞の比較級接尾辞 -er: 副詞と強く結びつけられるBタイプに由来する．r が残るのは，形容詞の比較級接尾辞からの類推か．
　・ 形容詞の最上級接尾辞 -est: Aタイプに由来する．あるいは，Bタイプの母音が弱化した形態に由来するとも考えられる．
　・ 副詞の最上級接尾辞 -est: 副詞と強く結びつけられるBタイプに由来する．子音部分については，形容詞の最上級接尾辞の対応物を取り入れたものか．

　本来4つの語尾は互いに異なる形態を示していた．それが，形容詞と副詞の間で，また比較級と最上級の間で，複雑な類推を繰り返した結果，似通ってきた，と考えておくのがよさそうだ．中英語期までにはほぼ現代の分布にたどり着いていたが，そこに至るまで，つまりゲルマン祖語から古英語期にかけては，様々な過程が繰り広げられていたと想像される．
