■ #810. -ly 副詞の連続は cacophonous か [adverb][suffix][euphony][-ly]

　昨日の記事「euphony and cacophony」([2011-07-15-1]) に関連して，cacophony の話題を1つ．規範的な見解によると，extremely carefully のような -ly 副詞の連続は避けるべきとされる．この場合には，with extreme care などの代替表現を用いるのが適切とされる．Fowler's Modern English Usage の "-ly" の項 (p. 473) にも，-ly 副詞の連続が規範的には好まれないという旨，解説がある．

Considerations of euphony and meaning make it desirable to avoid placing two -ly adverbs in succession when their function in the sentence is different. Thus We are utterly, hopelessly, irretrievably, ruined is acceptable because each of the -ly adverbs has the same relation to ruined. But the following show slightly uneuphonious contiguities: Many of the manuscripts were until comparatively recently in the keeping of Owen's family---English, 1987; he reverts to it (apparently disbelievingly) on several occasions---Encounter, 1987; Appearing relatively recently, Kyra represented change---New Yorker, 1987. 　ここでは，部分的に euphony の観点から（つまり cacophony として） -ly の連続の非が論じられているが，この問題に euphony あるいは cacophony の観点を持ち込むことはできないのではないか．引用内で明示されているとおり，複数の -ly 副詞が等位接続されて全体としてある形容詞や副詞にかかる場合には，問題なく容認される．むしろ，この場合には脚韻により強意の効果が増幅されており，euphonious であるとすら解釈されうる．
　ところが，統語的に等位の関係ではなく従属の関係を示す comparatively recently のような例では，規範的には容認度が落ちると述べられている．その理由は，引用内に明示はされていないが，議論の流れからすると cacophonous だからということになろう．euphony や cacophony は音（連続）に関する評価を表わす用語であり，統語論・意味論に言及するものではないことを前提とすれば，同じような -ly 副詞の連続が，かたや euphony でかたや cacophony であると評価されるのは妙である．-ly 副詞の連続が忌避されるのは，もっぱら統語意味論的な基準によるのではないだろうか．
　しかし，cacophony の観点を完全に無視するわけにいかないのかもしれない．等位関係と従属関係とでは抑揚と強勢のパターンが異なるが，この微妙な差異が euphony と cacophony とを分けている可能性がある．あるいは，原則として cacophonous ではあるが，等位接続された -ly は強意を増幅させる文体的効果ゆえに容認度が上がると考えることができるかもしれない．
