■ #6208. Doric が英語の文脈で Scottish 訛りにになるのはおもしろい [hellenic][greek][koine][scots_english][scots][dialect][variety][oed]

　英語には Doric という，ギリシア語の Doris （ドーリス地方）に基づく形容詞がある．「ドーリス地方の，ドーリス語の；ドーリス方言」などを原義とする．しかし，Doric には，派生義として「方言の，田舎訛りの；（とりわけ）スコットランド訛りの」もある．スコットランド訛りの英語が Doric と形容されることがあるのだ．さらに細かくいえば，特にスコットランド北東部の方言，Aberdeen の方言などが，典型的に Doric だとされる．この背景には，どんな事情があるのだろうか．
　「#1454. ギリシャ語派（印欧語族）」 ([2013-04-20-1]) で触れたように，古代ギリシアの言語の歴史を振り返ると，様々なギリシア語の方言が各地で，そして各ジャンルで用いられていたが，アテネを中心に行なわれ，学術・文学の担い手の言葉となった Attic 方言こそが，後にギリシアのみならずヘレニズム世界へ koiné として広がっていった経緯がある．ここから Doric を含むその他の方言は，社会言語学的に，下位にみなされるようになった．
　こうして Doric に宿ることになった「田舎訛り」の語義が，ギリシア語方言に限らず，より一般的に用いられるようになった．そこから今度は英語方言の文脈に特化して，とりわけ「スコットランド訛り」の語義を帯びるようになったのは興味深い．
　OED の Doric (ADJECTIVE & NOUN) によると，ギリシア語のドーリス方言を指す名詞用法の派生義として，今では廃義となっているが，近代に使われていものがある．

　このように，ある方言を軽蔑的にみなす名詞・形容詞としての用法が17世紀前半から見られるが，これが英語方言の文脈で「スコットランド訛り」を指すようになったのは，19世紀に入ってからである．まず，「スコットランド訛りの」を意味する形容詞としての用法を覗いてみよう．
