■ #3476. 曜日名の語源 [etymology][greek][latin][mythology][calendar]

　英語の月名の語源について，「#2910. 月名の由来」 ([2017-04-15-1])，あるいはより詳しく「#3229. 2月，February，如月」 ([2018-02-28-1]) とそのリンク先で取り上げてきた．一方，曜日名については「#2595. 英語の曜日名にみられるローマ名の「借用」の仕方」 ([2016-06-04-1]) や「#1261. Wednesday の発音，綴字，語源」 ([2012-10-09-1]) で取り上げてきたが，今回は参照に便利なようにシップリーの語源辞典 (674) より一覧を掲げたい．

　Sunday （日曜日） ---the day of the sun （太陽の日）
　Monday （月曜日） ---the day of the moon （月の日）
　Tuesday （火曜日） ---the day of Tiw （ティウの日）．Tiw はゲルマン人の戦争の神であり，ローマの Martis dies （マルスの日）の代わりとして使われるようになった．ちなみにフランス語では mardi である．Tiw はラテン語 deus （神）やギリシア語 Zeus と同族語である．
　Wednesday （水曜日） ---Woden's day （ウォーディンの日）．Woden は北欧の神々の王である．
　Thursday （木曜日） ---Thor's day （トールの日）．Thor は雷神 (thunderer) である．かつては同義語として Thunderday があった．
　Friday （金曜日） ---the day of Friya or Frigga （フリヤもしくはフリッガの日）．フリヤは北欧の愛の女神であり，フリッガはウォーディンの妻である．
　Saturday （土曜日） ---the day of Saturn （サターンの日）．サターンはローマの農業の神である．

　week 自体は古英語 wicu, wucu （週）に遡り，これは wīce （奉仕，義務）から派生している．さらに遡れば，ゲルマン祖語の *wikōn "turning, succession" に由来する．時間を司る7曜の神々の「奉仕・義務の交替順序」ということらしい．OED によると，

It has been argued that the Germanic base underlying the attested words had an earlier sense referring to changes of duty, which was then applied to the sequence of deities governing the weekly cycle, and finally transferred to the week itself. Such an earlier sense may be reflected by Old Icelandic vika unit of distance travelled at sea (perhaps with reference to the periodical change of rowing teams, although this cannot be independently substantiated), Gothic wiko order in which something happens (in an isolated example in Luke 1:8 with reference to the allocation of religious duties, translating ancient Greek τάξις order, arrangement . . .), and also Old English wīce office, duty, function . . . .

　「週」という単位や概念の起源は印欧語族にはなく東洋のものだが，ユダヤ人を介してギリシア人，ローマ人に伝わり，そこからキリスト教の伝播とともにヨーロッパに広がった．
