■ #4928. phatic communion 再訪 [phatic_communion][youtube][sociolinguistics][pragmatics][function_of_language]

　昨晩 YouTube の第69が公開されました．「時代とメディアで変わる社交的会話（Phatic communion，交話的コミュニケーション）」です．

　今回は phatic_communion についてです．交話的（交感的，社交的，儀礼的）言語使用などと訳されますが，様々にある言語の機能 (function_of_language) の1つです．日々の挨拶からスモールトーク，井戸端会議から恋人同士の会話まで，情報交換そのものが主たる目的なのではなく，言葉を交わすことそれ自体が目的となるような言語使用というものがあります．そのような場面では，言葉の中身はさほど重要でなく，言葉を交わすという行為そのものが社会関係構築のために重要なわけです．
　McArthur の英語学用語辞典より定義と説明を引用します．

PHATIC COMMUNION [1923: from Greek phatós spoken: coined by the Polish anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski]. Language used more for the purpose of establishing an atmosphere or maintaining social contact than for exchanging information or ideas: in speech, informal comments on the weather (Nice day again, isn't it?) or an enquiry about health at the beginning of a conversation or when passing someone in the street (How's it going? Leg better?); in writing, the conventions for opening or closing a letter (All the best, Yours faithfully), some of which are formally taught in school. . .

　言語の機能といえば情報伝達，と思い込んでいる多いと思いますが，それだけではありません．phatic communion のように，たとえ情報量がゼロに近くとも，それでも言葉を交わすというシーンは日常にあふれています．言語のこの機能に気づいておくことは，英語学習においてもとても大事です．なぜならば，大半の英語学習者は，世界の人々と情報交換するため「だけ」に英語を学んでいると信じ込んでしまっているからです．しかし，それでは言語（英語）の機能をあまりに狭く見てしまっていることになります．言葉の役割をもっと広くとらえてみませんか？
