■ #1516. messenger や passenger における n の挿入 [phonetics][consonant][etymology][epenthesis]

　harbinger （先駆け）, messenger （使者）, passenger （乗客）, porringer （雑炊皿）, scavenger （腐肉を食べる動物）, wharfinger （波止場主）のような語には，後ろから第2音節にn がみられる．しかし，message, passage, porridge などの語形と比較すればわかる通り，この n は非語源的である．g の前位置の n は epenthesis （語中音添加；[2011-05-06-1]の記事「#739. glide, prosthesis, epenthesis, paragoge」を参照）の例と考えられる．
　OED によると，messenger については，Anglo-Norman や Picard にも n の挿入された形態がみられるというから，必ずしも中英語における独立の変化ではなく，これらのフランス語方言綴字からの影響によるものと考えることもできるかもしれない．
　以下は，6語について n のない形態の初出時期と，n が初めて挿入されたおよその時期を，OED や語源辞典を参照してまとめたものである．

　Dobson (§438) に，n の挿入について次のような説明があった．

'INTRUSIVE' [n] and [ŋ]
   則438. The 'intrusive' [n] in messenger, papenjay, &c. and [ŋ] in nightingale and paringale 'equal' (<paregal) is a species of consonantal glide easing the passage between the preceding vowel and the following [ʤ] or [g], and is found chiefly in adopted words; it is perhaps, as has been suggested, associated with a desire to make weightier the middle syllable so as to avoid syncope . . . . It appears to develop at various dates from the thirteenth century (nightingale) onwards. In words in which it is an established feature of StE, e.g. nightingale and messenger, it is regularly shown by the orthoepists.

　<g> に対応する音価こそ異なるが，nightingale においても g の前位置に n が挿入されている事実への言及が興味深い．「#797. nightingale」 ([2011-07-03-1]) の記事で類例があまり見られないと述べたが，messenger や passenger と同様に扱ってしかるべきということだろうか．
