■ #1182. 古ノルド語との言語接触はたいした事件ではない？ [contact][old_norse]

　##59,928,931,1170,1179 の記事で，古ノルド語との言語接触がもつ英語史上の意義について肯定的に述べてきた．しかし，古今東西の言語接触の事例を見てみると，古英語と古ノルド語との言語接触の程度は，それほど驚くべきことではないということがわかる．極端な例として，ピジン語やクレオール語を考えてみるとよい．これらの混交言語の発生の背景には，想像を絶するほどに著しい言語接触があった．確かに，古ノルド語は英語に機能語や基本語を供給したとはいえ，実のところ，世の中の言語において，それくらいのことは珍しくもない．特に両言語の場合，言語類型的に似ているのだから，ある程度の混交は驚くべきことではない．英語史研究者が，これを世にも稀な例とみなして特別視し，古ノルド語の影響を過大評価してきたということはないだろうか．
　Thomason and Kaufman は，古ノルド語の英語への影響の度合いを，従来よりも小さく見積もる論客である．著書のいろいろなところで，この点を主張しているが，3箇所を引用しよう．
　

. . . we will also argue that the extent of Norse influence on English between 900 and 1100, though remarkable, was not extreme given the preexisting typological and genetic closeness of the two languages. (264)

In spite of the relatively large number of grammatical elements of Norse origin in Norsified ME, their effect on English structure was almost trivial. (298)

The Norse influence on English was pervasive, in the sense that its results are found in all parts of the language; but it was not deep, except in the lexicon. Norse influence could not have modified the basic typology of English because the two were highly similar in the first place. Norse did not stimulate simplification in English, since the simplifications we see in ME when compared to OE probably were taking place in OE before Norse influence became relevant. (302--03)

　このような Thomason and Kaufman の議論に対しては異論もあろう．しかし，古今東西の言語接触の事例を整理して得られる類型に照らして，特定の言語接触の事例を評価するという態度は重要である．言語接触による影響という話題は，言語の内面史と外面史を結びつけるダイナミックで魅力的な話題であるため，とかく過大に評価しがちである．しかし，過大評価でも過小評価でもなく，正当に評価してこそ，その魅力が最大に理解されるはずだろう．古ノルド語の影響も，決して軽視するわけではなく，あくまで行き過ぎを少し抑えるという趣旨で，慎重に論じる必要がある．
