■ #545. 歴史語用論 [pragmatics][historical_pragmatics]

　歴史語用論 ( historical pragmatics ) は1990年代半ばに興った今をときめく言語学の学際的な領域である．歴史言語学，語用論はもちろんのこと，コーパス言語学，談話分析，文学とも切り離せない．2000年には Journal of Historical Pragmatics の刊行が開始され，順調に研究が積み重ねられてきている．
　歴史語用論の定義は，Taavitsainen and Fitzmaurice によれば，以下の通りである．

A provisional and fairly neutral definition of historical pragmatics could be that historical pragmatics focuses on language use in past contexts and examines how meaning is made. It is an empirical branch of linguistic study, with focus on authentic language use in the past. (13)

　歴史言語学 ( historical linguistics ) と語用論の出会いは，両者の発展の必然的な帰結である．歴史言語学は，言語変化の理由を問うなかで言語の variation の重要性に気付いてきた．variation は実際の言語使用の事例のなかに観察されるものであるから，経験主義的な研究，近年ではコーパス言語学的研究が主流となってきている．一方で，語用論 ( pragmatics ) は，話し言葉とそれを取り巻くコンテクスト ( context ) の経験主義的な観察を重視してきたが，分野の発展とともにコンテクストの範囲を話し言葉のそれからから書き言葉のそれへと広げてきた．その範囲はついに歴史的な書き言葉へも広がり，ここに経験主義的な方法論で一致する歴史言語学と語用論の出会いが果たされることとなった．
