#4003. ゲルマン語派の形容詞の強変化と弱変化 (2) [adjective][inflection][oe][germanic][indo-european][comparative_linguistics][grammaticalisation][paradigm]

The Adjectival Declensions of Old English

Cato(nis) "smart/shrewd (one)", Strabōn "squint-eyed (one)") .このような固有名に用いられることから,どうやら弱変化屈折は個別化の機能を果たしたようである.とすると,古英語の形容詞弱変化屈折を伴う se blinda mann "the blind man" という句は,もともと "the blind one, a man" ほどの同格的な句だったと考えられる.それがやがて文法化 (grammaticalisation) し,屈折という文法範疇に組み込まれていくことになったのだろう.
 以上,Marsh (13--14) を参照して,なぜゲルマン語派の形容詞に強弱2種類の屈折があるのかに関する1つの説を紹介した.

#3995. Ruthwell Cross の "on rodi" [ruthwell_cross][oe][dative][case][syncretism][germanic][inscription][manuscript]

Dumfriesshire の Ruthwell Cross は,古英詩 The Dream of the Rood の断片がルーン文字で刻まれた有名な石碑である.8世紀初頭のものと考えられている.そこに古英語アルファベットで転字すると "kristwæsonrodi" と読める文字列がある.分かち書きをすれば "krist wæs on rodi" (Crist was on the rood) となる.

A final verdict then on rodi: not only does it not stand in need of special 'explanation', we ought to be very surprised if it or something like it didn't turn up in the early materials, and probably assume that the paucity of such remains is a function of the paucity of data. The fact that a given declension will show perhaps both -i and -æ datives (or even -i and -æ and -e) in very early inscriptions and glosses is a matter of profound historical interest. We have as it were caught a practicing bricoleur in the act, experimenting with different ways of cobbling together a noun paradigm out of the materials at hand. Morphological change is not neogrammarian, declensions are not stable or water-tight (they leak, as Sapir said of grammars), and --- most important --- the reconstruction of a new system out of the disjecta membra of an old and more complex one is bound to be marked by false starts and afterthoughts, and therefore a certain amount of 'irregularity'. It is also bound to take time, and the shape we encounter will depend on where in its trajectory of change we happen to catch it. Systems in process of reformation will be messy until a final mopping-up can be effected.

The transition from late IE to PGmc involved a collapse and reformation of the case system; nominative, genitive and accusative remained more or less intact, but all the locational/movement cases merged into a single 'fourth case', which is conventionally called 'dative', but in fact often represents an IE locative or instrumental. This codes pretty much all the functions of the original dative, locative, ablative and instrumental. A few WGmc dialects do still have a distinct instrumental sg for some noun classes, e.g. OS dag-u, OHG tag-u for 'day' vs. dat sg dag-e, tag-e; OE has collapsed both into dative (along with locative, instrumental and ablative), though some traces of an instrumental remain in the pronouns . . .

. . . all the dialects have generalized an old instrumental in */-m-/ for 'dative' plural (Gothic -am/-om/-im, OE -um, etc. . . ). But the 'dative' singular is a different matter: traces of dative, locative and instrumental morphology remain scattered throughout the existing materials.

(2) [oe][verb][subjunctive][inflection][number][person][sound_change][analogy][sobokunagimon][conjugation][paradigm]

(iii) Present subjunctive. The Germanic subjunctive descends mainly from the old IE optative; typical paradigms:

(7.24)
GoOEOIc
sg1baír-a-iber-eber-a
2baír-ai-s   "ber-er
3baír-ai   "ber-e
pl1baír-ai-maber-enber-em
2baírai-þ   "ber-eþ
3baír-ai-na   "ber-e

The basic IE thematic optative marker was */-oi-/, which > Gmc */-ɑi-/ as usual; this is still clearly visible in Gothic. The other dialects show the expected developments of this diphthong and following consonants in weak syllables . . . , except for the OE plural, where the -n is extended from the third person, as in the indicative. . . .
   . . . .
(iv) Preterite subjunctive. Here the PRET2 grade is extended to all numbers and persons; thus a form like OE bǣr-e is ambiguous between pret ind 2 sg and all persons subj sg. The thematic element is an IE optative marker */-i:-/, which was reduced to /e/ in OE and OIc before it could cause i-umlaut (but remains as short /i/ in OS, OHG).

(1) [oe][verb][be][subjunctive][inflection][number][person][sound_change][sobokunagimon][conjugation][3ps][paradigm]

. . ならぬ If I was you . . . のような用例も可能ですが,伝統文法では were を用いることになっています).be 動詞をめぐる特殊事情については,「#2600. 古英語の be 動詞の屈折」 ([2016-06-09-1]),「#2601. なぜ If I WERE a bird なのか?」

 (1) If he tried harder, he would succeed.
 (2) If we caught the 10 o'clock train, we could get there by lunchtime.
 (3) If I were you, I'd wait a bit.

 また,過去の事実と反対の仮定を表すには,条件節のなかでは動詞の仮定法過去完了形を用い,帰結節では would/should/could/might have + PP の形を取るのが一般的です.

 (4) If she had been awake, she would have heard the noise.
 (5) If I had had enough money, I could have bought a car.
 (6) If I had known you were ill, I could have visited you.

The past subjunctive is . . . used to express imaginary and unreal (including counterfactual) conditionality. In this case both clauses are subjunctive. Since no infexional distinction is made in OE between unreality in past, present or future, adverbs may be used to distinguish specific time-relations, but usually the time-relations are determined from the context. Example (219) illustrates a counterfactual in the past, (220) a counterfactual in the present:

(219) ... & ðær frecenlice gewundod wearð, & eac ofslagen wære (PAST SUBJ), gif his sunu his ne gehulpe (PAST SUBJ)
... and there dangerously wounded was, and even slain would-have-been, if his son him not had-helped
                                                                                                                 (Or 4 8.186.22)
... and was dangerously wounded there, and would even have been killed, had his son not helped him

(220) Hwæt, ge witon þæt ge giet todæge wæron (PAST SUBJ) Somnitum þeowe, gif ge him ne alugen (PAST SUBJ) iowra wedd
What, you know that you still today were to-Samnites slaves, if you them not had-belied your vows
                                                                                                                 (Or 3 8.122.11)
Listen, you know that you would still today be the Samnites' slaves, if you had not betrayed your vows to them

. . . it is important to recognize that it is open to several major caveats and objections. Firstly, it is well known that these dialects refer only to actual linguistic material, and therefore there are large areas of the country, most obviously East Anglia, about whose dialect status we cannot know directly from OE evidence. Secondly, the nomenclature adopted is derived from political structures whereas most of the writing we have is to be more directly associated with ecclesiastical structures. Thirdly, the type of approach which leads to the above division is a product of the Stammbaum and its associated theories, whereas modern dialectology, either synchronic or diachronic ... demonstrates that such a rigidly demarcated division is ultimately untenable. It would be preferable to consider each text as an 'informant', ... which is more or less closely related to other texts on an individual basis, with the classification of texts into dialect groups being viewed as a process determined by the purposes of the linguistic analysis at hand, rather than as some a priori fact. . . .

#3964. 古英語の "digraph controversy" (2) [digraph][oe][spelling][phonetics][phonology][vowel][diphthong][typography][reconstruction][minimal_pair]

#3955. 古英語の "digraph controversy" [digraph][oe][spelling][phonetics][phonology][vowel][diphthong][typography][reconstruction]

ValueExample
DigraphEarlyLate
<ēa>æʊæəstrēam 'stream'
<ea>æəæheall 'hall'
<ēo>sēon 'to see'
<eo>ɛəɛġeolu 'yellow'
<īe>iə, iː(ġe)līefan 'to believe'
<ie>ɪəɪġiefan 'to give'

AlalizA(a)liz である.これが中英語に借用されて Alyse や,近現代の Alice となった.もう1つの女性名 Alison は,フランス語で Alice に指小辞が付されたものである.
 「王子」「エーデルワイス」「ハイジ」「アリス」が関係者だったというのは,なかなかおもしろい.

#3902. 純アングロサクソン名の Edward, Edgar, Edmond, Edwin [anglo-saxon][oe][onomastics][personal_name][etymology][norman_conquest]

abbot; alms; anthem; ass; belt; bin; bishop; box; butter; candle; chalk; cheap; cheese; chervil; chest; cock; cockle (plant name); copper; coulter; cowl; cup; devil; dight; dish; fennel; fever; fork; fuller; inch; kiln; kipper; kirtle; kitchen; line; mallow; mass (= Eucharist); mat; (perhaps) mattock; mile; mill; minster; mint (for coinage); mint (plant name); -monger; monk; mortar; neep (and hence turnip); nun; pail; pall (noun); pan (if borrowed); pear; (probably) peel; pepper; pilch (noun); pile (= stake); pillow; pin; to pine; pipe; pit; pitch (dark substance); (perhaps) to pluck; (perhaps) plum; (perhaps) plume; poppy; post; (perhaps) pot; pound; priest; punt; purple; radish; relic; sack; Saturday; seine; shambles; shrine; shrive (and shrift, Shrove Tuesday); sickle; (perhaps) silk; sock; sponge; (perhaps) stop; street; strop (and hence strap); tile; toll; trivet; trout; tun; to turn; turtle-dove; wall; wine

 このリストに,やや可能性は低くなるが,地続きと考え得るものとして次を追加している (131) .

anchor; angel; antiphon; arch-; ark; beet and beetroot; capon; cat; crisp; drake (= dragon, not duck); fan; Latin; lave; master; mussel; (wine-)must; pea; pine (the tree); plant; to plant; port; provost; psalm; scuttle; table; also (where the re-borrowing would be from early Scandinavian) kettle

 続いて,650年以後のラテン借用語について,現代まで地続きであると根拠をもっていえる少数の語を次のように挙げている (132) .

aloe; cook; cope (= garment); noon; pole; pope; school; (if borrowed) fiddle; (in some of these cases re-borrowing in very early Middle English could also be possible)

 そして,根拠がやや弱くなるが,650年以後のラテン借用語として現代まで地続きの可能性のあるものは次の通り (132) .

altar; canker; cap; clerk; comet; creed; deacon; false; flank; hyssop; lily; martyr; myrrh; to offer; palm (tree); paradise; passion; peony; pigment; prior; purse; rose; sabbath; savine; sot; to spend; stole; verse; also (where the re-borrowing would be from early Scandinavian) cole

[history][oe][alfred][anglo-saxon]

Ælfred kyning hāteð grētan Wǣrferð biscep his wordum luflīce ond frēondlīce; ond ðē cȳðan hāte ðæt mē cōm swīðe oft on gemynd, hwelce wiotan iū wǣron giond Angelcynn . . . ond hū man ūtanbordes wīsdōm ond lāre hieder on lond sōhte; ond hū wē hīe nū sceoldon ūte begietan, gif wē hīe habban sceoldon. Crystal (13) より,この箇所に対する現代語を与えておく.

King Alfred sends his greetings to Bishop Werferth in his own words, in love and friendship . . . . I want to let you know that it has often occurred to me to think what wise men there once were throughout England . . . and how people once used to come here from abroad in search of wisdom and learning --- and how nowadays we would have to get it abroad (if we were to have it at all). Learning had so declined in England that there were very few people this side of the Humber who could understand their service-books in English, let alone translate a letter out of Latin into English --- and I don't imagine there were many north of the Humber, either. There were so few of them that I cannot think of even a single one south of the Thames at the time when I came to the throne. Thanks be to almighty God that we now have any supply of teachers.

・ gōdspel < gōd 'good' + spel 'tidings': gospel
 ・ sunnandæg < sunnan 'sun's' + dæg 'day': Sunday
・ stæfcræft < stæf 'letters' + cræft 'crat': grammar
・ mynstermann < mynster 'monastery' + mann 'man': monk
・ frumweorc < frum 'beginning' + weorc 'work': creation
・ eorþcræft < eorþ 'earth' + cræft 'craft': geometry
・ rōdfæstnian < rōd 'cross' + fæstnian 'fasten': crucify
・ dægred < dæg 'day' + red 'red': dawn
・ lēohtfæt < lēoht 'light' + fæt 'vessel': lamp
・ tīdymbwlātend < tīd 'time' + ymb 'about' + wlātend 'gaze': astronomer

#3801. gan にみる古英語語彙の結合的性格 [lexicology][word_formation][oe][lexical_stratification]

(1) gan/gangan 'go, come, move, proceed, depart; happen'

   (b) genge n., sb. 'troops, company'
   (c) -genge f., sb. in nightgenge 'hyena, i.e. an animal that prowls at night'
   (d) -genga m., sb. in angenga 'a solitary, lone goer', æftergenga 'one who follows', hindergenga 'one that goes backwards, a crab', huselgenga 'one who goes to the Lord's supper', mangenga 'one practising evil', nihtgenga 'one who goes by night, goblin', rapgenga 'rope-dancer', sægenga 'sea-goer, mariner; ship'
   (e) genge adj. 'prevailing, going, effectual, agreeable'
   (f) -gengel sb. in æftergengel 'successor' (perhaps from æftergengan, wk. vb. 'to go')
(3) compounds with verbal first constituent, i.e. V + N (some of them might, however, also be treated as N + N, i.e. with gang as in (2a): gangdæg 'Rogation day, one of the three processional days before Ascension day', gangewifre 'spider, i.e. a weaver that goes', ganggeteld 'portable tent', ganghere 'army of foot-soldiers', gangwucu 'the week of Holy Thursday, Rogation week'
(4) gengan wk. vb. 'to go' < *gang-j-an; æftergengness 'succession, posterity'
(5) prefixations of gan/gangan;
   (a) agan 'go, go by, pass, pass into possession, occur, befall, come forth'
   (b) began/begangan 'go over, go to, visit; cultivate; surround; honour, worship' with derivatives begánga/bígang 'practice, exercise, worship, cultivation'; begánga/bígenga 'inhabitant, cultivator' and numerous compounds of both; begenge n. 'practice, worship', bigengere 'worker, worshipper'; bigengestre 'hand maiden, attendant, worshipper'; begangness 'calendae, celebration'
   (c) foregan 'go before, precede' with derivatives foregenga 'forerunner, predecessor', foregengel 'predecessor'
   (d) forgan 'pass over, abstain from'
   (e) forþgan 'to go forth' with forþgang 'progress, purging, privy'
   (f) ingan 'go in' with ingang 'entrance(-fee), ingression', ingenga 'visitor, intruder'

   (j) ongan 'to approach, enter into' with ongang 'entrance, assault'
   (k) oþgan 'go away, escape'
   (l) togan 'go to, go into; happen; separate, depart' with togang 'approach, attack'

   (r) ymbgan 'go round, surround' with ymbgang 'circumference, circuit, going about'.
