   (1) Latin and French have had a profound effect on the English lexicon, and Latin has had a much greater effect than French.
   (2) Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese are of relatively minor importance, although Italian experienced a small boost in the 18th century.
   (3) The general trend is one of decline in borrowing from Classical and Romance languages. In the 17th century, 39.3% of recorded vocabulary came from Classical and Romance languages, whereas today the figure is 15%.
   (4) Latin borrowing peaked in 1600--1675, and Latin contributed approximately 7000 words to the English lexicon during the 16th century.
   (5) Greek, coming after Latin and French in terms of overall quantity, peaked in the 19th century.
   (6) French borrowing peaked in 1251--1375, fell below the level of Latin borrowing around 1525, and thereafter declined except for a small upturn in the 18th century. French contributed over 11000 words to the English lexicon during the Middle English period.
   (7) Today, borrowing from Latin may have a slight lead on borrowing from French.

For the reasons why Old French could not be relevant, refer to Jespersen (Chapters 33). To summarise the main grounds against the hypothesis of Old French influence on the English s-plural:

   1. Considering that the genitive singular -s spread earlier and faster than the nominative plural -s, French should first have influenced genitive singular forms, which is however impossible because Old French had no s-ending for the genitive singular.
   2. The extension of the s-plural started before the Norman Conquest, making it unnecessary to propose French influence.
   3. The fact that -s prevailed earlier in the northern dialects than in the southern is against the expectation if French influence was assumed. Such French influence would have been felt first and foremost in the South.
   4. The s-ending was just one of the various plural endings available in Old French, and it was usually an accusative plural ending instead of a nominative plural.
   5. In English, adjectives rarely took the s-plural after the Old French model. If French influence had been at work, not only nouns but also adjectives might have been affected.
   6. The English s-ending was usually preceded by a vowel typically spelled e, while in Old French such a vowel spelling never occurred. We might note that the forms -es and -s were kept distinct well into Late Middle English.

. . . we should . . . look at French influence outside the borrowing of vocabulary. It is best to start by saying that French influence is largely absent from inflectional morphology. The only possibilities concern the eventual domination of the plural inflection -s at the expense of -en (hence shoes rather than shoon) and the rise of the personal pronoun one. Although there are parallels in French, it is virtually certain that the English developments are entirely independent.
The strongest influence of French can be best seen in two other areas, apparently unrelated but in fact closely connected to each other. These are: (i) derivational morphology; (ii) stress.

. . . Scandinavian influence was originally predominant in the Danelaw. . . . [E]ventually many Scandinavian elements entered southern dialects as well, but this is a two-stage process. There is the original contact between the two language which brought Scandinavian features into the English of the Danelaw. Then, later, there is spread within English by means of interdialectal contact. Contact between French and English, on the other hand, shows a much lesser geographical variation. The key here is register. That is to say, the variables which affect English in respect of French are far more to do with a contrast between types of social language than geography. Thus, if a text is concerned with, say, religion or science, or it is a formal piece, then it is probably that it will contain a higher proportion of French loanwords than a text which is purely secular or colloquial, whichever part of the country the text comes from. In this respect we should also note that Scandinavian loans are more likely to be colloquial (or everyday).

 換言すれば,古ノルド語の影響が,少なくとも当初の「第1段階」においては地域方言(水平方向の変種)の差異をもたらしたのに対し,フランス語の影響は,主として文体や使用域(垂直方向の変種)の差異を生み出したということである.これは,両言語の影響に関する様々な対立点を要約する謂いとして,言い得て妙である.

#2352. 「動物とその肉を表す英単語」の神話 (2) [french][lexicology][loan_word][language_myth][lexical_stratification]

. . . the introduction of French loans for food, such as beef, pork and mutton, is sometimes held to demonstrate a considerable degree of bilingualism. This view owes a great deal to Scott's Ivanhoe, which claims that animals on the hoof were called by their English names, but by French names when cooked. The initial reaction is to believe that; it is only when we recall terms such as English lamb (alongside mutton) or Anglo-Norman cattle alongside English cow that its plausibility diminishes. It is more likely, although less romantically appealing, to suggest that French loans were most probable in administration and learning, and that by and large 'ordinary' words were only borrowed in the few areas where there was constant interaction between English and French speakers. This neither demonstrates extensive bilingualism nor even that there was extensive borrowing beyond a few specific areas.

例えば,Iglesias-Rábade の参照した F. H. Sykes (French Elements in Middle English. Oxford: 1899.) や A. A. Prins (French Influence in English Phrasing. Leiden: 1952.)

 (1) Verbal phrases made of a 'light' V(erb) + deverbal noun: e.g. take(n) ende, take(n) dai, nime(n) air
 (2) The 'light' verb nime(n)/take(n) + a 'prepositional' deverbal: e.g. take(n) in gree, take(n) to herte, take(n) in cure

 (1) の型については,306の句が収集され,そのうち49個がフランス語からの意味借用であり,156個がフランス語に似た表現がみつかるというものであるという (Iglesias-Rábade 96) .(1) の型については,型自体は古英語からあるものの,フランス語の多くの句によって英語での種類や使用が増したとはいえるだろうとしている (99) .

. . . this syntactic pattern acquired great popularity in lME with extensive use and a varied typology. I do not claim that this construction is a French imprint, because it occurred in OE, but in my opinion French contributed decisively to the use of this type of structure consisting of a light verb translated from French + a deverbal element which bears the action and the lexical meaning and which usually kept the French form and content.

 (2) の型については,Iglesias-Rábade (99) は,型自体も一部の句を除けば一般的に古英語に遡るとは言いにくく,概ねフランス語(あるいはラテン語)の翻訳借用と考えるのが妥当だとしている.

This pattern, too, dates from OE, though it was restricted to the verb niman + an object preceded by on, e.g. on gemynd niman ('to bear in mind'). However, this construction came to be much more frequent in lME, particularly with sequences which had no prototype in OE, and, more intriguingly, most of them were a calque in both form and content from French and/or Latin.

興味深いのは,いずれの型についても,句の初出が14世紀後半から15世紀にかけてピークを迎えるということだ.単体のフランス借用語も数的なピークが14世紀後半に来たことを考えると,その少し後を句の借用のピークが追いかけてきたように見える.実際,句に含まれる名詞は借用語であることが多い.Iglesias-Rábade (104) は,より一般化して "It seems plausible that the introduction of foreign single words precedes the incorporation of foreign phrases, turns of speech, proverbial sayings and idioms." ととらえている.
 これらの句が英語に入ってきた経路について,Iglesias-Rábade は,英仏語の2言語使用者が日常の話し言葉においてもたらしたというよりは,翻訳文書において初出することが多いことから,主として書き言葉経由で流入したと考えている (100).結論として,p. 104 では次のように述べられている.

To conclude, I believe that English had borrowed from French an important bulk of phrases and turns of speech which today are considered to be part of daily speech. In my opinion phrasal structures of this type must have been rather artificial and removed from everyday speech when they first appeared in late ME works. I base this conclusion on the fact that such phrases were not common in a contemporary specimen of colloquial speech, the Towneley Plays . . . . I thus suggest that most of them made their way into English via literature and the translation process, rather than through the natural process of social bilingual speech. It is worth noting that most ME literature is based on French patterns or French matter. Most of this phrasal borrowing was the natural product of translation and composition.

 Iglesias-Rábade の議論を受け入れて,これらのフランス語の句が書き言葉を経由した借用だったとして,次の疑問は,それが後に話し言葉へ浸透していったのは,いかなる事情があってのことだろうか.

#2349. 英語の復権期にフランス借用語が爆発したのはなぜか (2) [reestablishment_of_english][language_shift][french][loan_word][borrowing][bilingualism][borrowing][lexicology][statistics][contact]

If the English language appears to embark on a far more extensive campaign of lexical borrowing from the later fourteenth century, this is because French had become the second official language of record in England, alongside and often in replacement of Latin. This means in effect that from the thirteenth century onwards French is called upon to cover a much wider range of registers than in the earlier period, when it was used in the main for works of entertainment or edification. This change in the role of French took place at a time when English was debarred from use as a language of record, so that when English in its turn began to take on that role in the later fourteenth century, it was only to be expected that it would retain much of the necessary vocabulary used by its predecessor --- French. . . . For successive generations of countless English scribes and officials the administrative vocabulary of French had been an integral part of their daily life and work; it would be unrealistic to expect them to jettison it and re-create an entirely new Germanic set of terms when English came in to take over the role hitherto played by French.

#2348. 英語史における code-switching 研究 [code-switching][me][emode][bilingualism][contact][latin][french][literature][borrowing][genre][historical_pragmatics][discourse_analysis]

There is a considerable number of mixed-language texts from the ME and the EModE periods, many of which show CS in mid-sentence. The phenomenon occurs across genres and text types, both literary and non-literary, verse and prose; and the languages involved mirror the above-mentioned multilingual situation. In most cases Latin as the 'High' language is one of the languages, with one or both of the vernaculars English and French as the second partner, though switching between the two vernaculars is also attested. (79)

CS in written texts was clearly not an exception but a widespread specific mode of discourse over much of the attested history of English. It occurs across domains, genres and text types --- business, religious, legal and scientific texts, as well as literary ones. (92)

ジャンルを問わず,様々なテキストに CS が見られるようだ.文学テキストとしては,具体的には "(i) sermons; (ii) other religious prose texts; (iii) letters; (iv) business accounts; (v) legal texts; (vi) medical texts" が挙げられており,非文学テキストとしては "(i) mixed or 'macaronic' poems; (ii) longer verse pieces; (iii) drama; (iv) various prose texts" などがあるとされる (Schendl 80) .

It is not easy to assess the influence of Latin and French on the development of English comparison. It is perhaps not altogether impossible that Latin influence has played a part in this process, particularly in the earlier stages. And considering the fact that periphrastic comparison begins to gain ground in English at a time when French influence is particularly strong, it seems reasonable to assume that the influence of this language has considerably strengthened the position of more and most in the English system of comparison. Another point which seems to speak for foreign influence is that the periphrastic mode of comparison does not seem to be favoured by living popular speech. 'The comparison of adjectives is formed in the [modern English] dialects by adding the comparative suffix -er and the superlative -est to practically all adjectives, polysyllabic as well as monosyllabic. More and most are as a rule only used to supplement or intensify the regular comparison, as more beautifuller, most worst' (Elizabeth M. Wright, Rustic Speech and Folk-lore, London 1913, p. 145).

もし最後の点が正しいとすれば,屈折比較の句比較の使い分けは,本来,語の音節数云々というよりは媒体 (medium) や文体 (style) などの使用域 (register) に依存していたことになる.また,その使い分けは,中英語期のイングランドにおける本来語とフランス語,ラテン語の社会的な地位の差に対応するという議論にもつながっていくだろう.実証的な研究が望まれる.

#2346. more, most を用いた句比較の発達 [comparison][french][latin][contact][synthesis_to_analysis]

#2345. 古英語の diglossia と中英語の triglossia [diglossia][sociolinguistics][bilingualism][oe][me][latin][french]

Nevalainen and Tieken-Boon van Ostade (272) によれば,

. . . Anglo-Saxon England became a diglossic society, in that one language came to be used in one set of circumstances, i.e. Latin as the language of religion, scholarship and education, while another language, English, was used in an entirely different set of circumstances, namely in all those contexts in which Latin was not used. In other words, Latin became the High language and English, in its many different dialects, the Low language.

 しかし,重要なのは,英語は当時のヨーロッパでは例外的に,法律や文学という典型的に High variety の使用がふさわしいとされる分野においても用いられたことである.古英語の diglossia は,この点でやや変則的である.
中英語期に入ると,イングランド社会における言語使用は複雑化する.再び Nevalainen and Tieken-Boon van Ostade (272--73) から引用する.

This diglossic situation was complicated by the coming of the Normans in 1066, when the High functions of the English language which had evolved were suddenly taken over by French. Because the situation as regards Latin did not change --- Latin continued to be primarily the language of religion, scholarship and education --- we now have what might be referred to as a triglossic situation, with English once more reduced to a Low language, and the High functions of the language shared by Latin and French. At the same time, a social distinction was introduced within the spoken medium, in that the Low language was used by the common people while one of the High languages, French, became the language of the aristocracy. The use of the other High language, Latin, at first remained strictly defined as the medium of the church, though eventually it would be adopted for administrative purposes as well. . . . [T]he functional division of the three languages in use in England after the Norman Conquest neatly corresponds to the traditional medieval division of society into the three estates: those who normally fought used French, those who worked, English, and those who prayed, Latin.

近年,dialectic(s), dogmatic(s), ethic(s), metaphysic(s), physic(s), static(s) など,従来の -ics に対して,ドイツ語やフランス語の用法に影響されて -ic を用いる書き手も出てきており,ややこしい.

#2334. 英語の復権と議会の発展 [law_french][register][french][bilingualism][latin][reestablishment_of_english][history][parliament][hundred_years_war]

It seems much more likely that French had been the language of the royal courts from the very beginning of the system of central royal courts established by Henry II and that French was their language because in that period it was the first language of the men appointed as royal justices and of many of the litigants. French seems then to have remained the language of the courts in part because of cultural conservatism, the absence of any really compelling reason for changing accepted practice; in part because there were advantages to the professional elite who came to dominate legal practice in using a language which needed to be learned and mastered by outsiders and which enhance their mystique; in part also because the courts had developed a technical French vocabulary that was not easily translatable into English.

The languages of English law in the thirteenth and fourteenth century were primarily Latin and French. Latin was and remained the language of formal record at all levels of the court hierarchy. It was also the language of some of the thirteenth-century instructional literature of English law and even perhaps of some of the actual instruction. Its status as the language of formal legislation appears to have gone unchallenged prior to the last quarter of the thirteenth century but thereafter was increasingly challenged by the Anglo-Norman French of the common lawyers. Anglo-Norman French was the language actually used in pleading not just in the royal courts but also in county and city courts and came to be the invariable language of the law reports which recorded such pleading and which were also used to teach the following generation of law students. Anglo-Norman was also the language of oral legal instruction and of the legal literature which grew out of such instruction and of some other instructional literature as well. Anglo-Norman may always have been the language for the drafting and discussion of legislation but was also from 1275 onwards one of the two languages used for the formal enactment of legislation as well. The third language used in thirteenth- and early-fourteenth-century England, English, is little in evidence here. It may have been used in the local proclamation of legislation, but it was not for the most part one of the written languages used in legal contexts.

#2329. 中英語の借用元言語 [borrowing][loan_word][me][lexicology][contact][latin][french][greek][italian][spanish][portuguese][welsh][cornish][dutch][german][bilingualism]

#2328. 中英語の多言語使用 [me][bilingualism][french][latin][contact][sociolinguistics][writing][diglossia][register]

The initial trilingual situation (amongst at least certain groups) developed into oral bilingualism (though not universal) which in turn gradually resulted in vernacular monolingualism" ということである.だが,いずれの表も,中英語期のマクロ社会言語学的状況の一面をうまく表現している図ではある.

#2319. 中英語の関係詞 the which [relative_pronoun][expletive][article][french][contact]

 現代英語で普通にみられる wh- 形の関係詞は,初期中英語に which として初出する.関係詞 which は,より一般的だった that と競合しながらも,14世紀辺りから分布を拡げ,15世紀には普通となった.「#2314. 従属接続詞を作る虚辞としての that」 ([2015-08-28-1]) で示唆したように,expletive that を伴う which that も現われ,Chaucer などでは普通にみられたし,expletive as を伴う which as も知られている (Mustanoja 197--98) .
注目すべきは,同じく中英語に生じた the which (that) である.この定冠詞 the を伴う関係詞は,初期中英語の北部方言で書かれた Cursor Mundi で初出する(Cursor Mundi では,実に70回ほど現われる).OED の which, pron. and adj. より,語義13からの例を引こう.

a1400 (a1325) Cursor Mundi (Gött.) l. 9434 þe first law was cald 'of kinde,' .. þe toþer has 'possitiue' to name, þe whilk lawe was for-bed Adam, Forto ete þat fruit.

1884 Tennyson Becket Prol. 20 He holp the King to break down our castles, for the which I hate him." となっている.

#2279. 英語語彙の逆転二層構造 [loan_word][french][lexicology][register][taboo][semantic_change][lexical_stratification]

 英語には,英語本来語とフランス語・ラテン語からの借用語が使用域を違えて共存する,語彙の三層構造というべきものがある.一般に,本来語彙は日常的,一般的,庶民的,略式,暖かい,懐かしい,感情に直接うったえかけるなどの特徴をもち,借用語は学問的,専門的,文学的,格式,中立,よそよそしいといった響きをもつ.この使用域の対立については,Orr の記述が的確である.

For two hundred years and more, things intellectual, things pertaining to the spirit, were symbolized by words that had a flavour of remoteness, of higher courtliness, words redolent of the school rather than of the home, words that often had by their side humbler synonyms, humbler, yet used to express the things that are closer to our hearts as human beings, as children and parents, lovers and workers. (Orr, John. Words and Sounds in English and French. Oxford: Blackwell, 1953. p. 42 qtd. in Ullmann 146)

 本来語が低く,借用語が高いという使用域の分布が多くの語彙ペアに当てはまることは事実だろう.しかし,関係が逆転しているように見えるペアもないではない.例えば,Ullmann (147) は,次のペアを挙げている.最初の2組のペアについては,Jespersen (93) も触れている.

Native wordForeign word
dalevalley
deedaction
foeenemy
meedreward
to heedto take notice of

#2266. 間投詞 eh? は Canadianism か? [interjection][canadian_english][language_myth][french]

. . . it should seem quite obvious that eh? is no Canadianism---for it did not originate in Canada and is not peculiar to the English spoken in Canada. Indeed, eh? appears to be in general use wherever English speakers hang their hats; and in one form or another it has been in general use for centuries. On the other hand, there can be no doubt that eh? has a remarkably high incidence in the conversation of many Canadians these days. Moreover, it seems certain that in Canada eh? has been pressed into service in contexts where it would be unfamiliar elsewhere. Finally, it would appear that eh? has gained such recognition among Canadians that it is used consciously and frequently by newspapermen and others in informal articles and reports . . . and attributed freely in reported conversations with all manner of men, including athletes, professors, and politicians. (Avis 95)

Although eh? is no Canadianism, there can be little doubt that the interjection is well entrenched. . . . [M]any Canadians are aware of its current high frequency (especially in its narrative function), a fact which leads some to claim it as a Canadianism, others to use it intentionally in print, and, it must be added, some to treat it as a pernicious carbuncle. (Avis 103)

Eh? is a common contour-carrier among French Canadians (along with eh bien and hein?), as it has been in the French language for centuries. This circumstance may have contributed to the high popularity of the interjection in Canada generally. (Avis 102--03fn)

The social meanings attached to French and to English in the colonies where they were used differed markedly. Ali A. Mazrui, a Ugandan scholar, has summarized this difference by pointing to the "militant linguistic cosmopolitanism among French-speaking African leaders," a factor that inhibited national liberation movements in countries where French served as the sole common national language. "The English language, by the very fact of being emotionally more neutral than French," he writes, "was less of a hindrance to the emergence of national consciousness in British Africa" (1973, p. 67). This view is confirmed by President Leopold S. Senghor of Senegal, himself a noted poet who writes in French. English, in Senghor's opinion, provides "an instrument which, with its plasticity, its rhythm and its melody, corresponds to the profound, volcanic affectivity of the Black peoples" (1975, p. 97); writers and speakers of English are less inclined to let respect for the language interfere with their desire to use it. One consequence of this difference in attitudes is that French is generally more uniform across the world (See Valdman 1979), while English has developed a series of distinct national standards.
