　Chaucer に代表される後期中英語の音素体系を Cruttenden (65--66) に拠って示したい．音素体系というものは，現代語においてすら理論的に提案されるものであるから，複数の仮説がある．ましてや，音価レベルで詳細が分かっていないことも多い古語の音素体系というものは，なおさら仮説的というべきである．したがって，以下に示すものも，あくまで1つの仮説的な音素体系である．
