・ Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything. 「(老いぼれて)歯もなく,目もなく,味もなければ何もなし」(Shakespeare, As You Like It II. vii)
 ・ a wallet sans cash
・ There were no potatoes so we had fish and chips sans the chips.
・ He came to the door sans shirt.
・ She went to the party sans her husband.
・ She would not be happy with people seeing her sans makeup.
・ He was wearing running shoes, sans socks.

 こうしてみると,なかなか使ってみたくなる前置詞ですね.
OED の sans, prep. によると,英語での初出は初期近代英語の Kyng Alisaunder です.

c1300 K. Alis. 134 Of gold he made a table Al ful of steorren, saun fable.

 (1) A girl ran up. 「ある少女が駆け寄ってきた」
    ran up が全体として1つの自動詞に相当する.
 (2) The spider ran up the wall. 「そのクモは壁を登っていった」
自動詞 ran と前置詞句 up the wall の組み合わせである.
 (3) The soldier ran up a flag. 「その兵士は旗を掲げた」
ran up の組み合わせにより1つの他動詞に相当し,目的語を取る.この場合,小辞 up と名詞句の目的語 a flag の位置はリバーシブルで,The soldier ran a flag up. の語順も可能.ただし,目的語が it のような代名詞の場合には,むしろ The soldier ran it up. の語順のみが許容される.
 (4) Would you mind running me up the road? 「道路の先まで車に乗せていっていただけませんか」
他動詞 run と前置詞句 up the road の組み合わせである.

 runup の組み合わせのみに限定しても,このように4つの型が認められる.他の動詞と他の小辞の組み合わせの全体を考慮すれば,型としては8つの型があり,きわめて複雑となる.

#4958. stand on the shoulders of giants 「巨人の肩の上に立つ」 [proverb][idiom][sobokunagimon]

学問にせよ何にせよ,人類は先人から得た知識を蓄積し,その上にさらなる知識を付け加えるという形で文明を進歩させてきた.このことを西洋では to stand on the shoulders of giants 「巨人の肩の上に立つ」と表現する.
 以下は「1人の巨人の左肩(のみ)に乗る小人」という状況のエッチングで,厳密には "a dwarf on a shoulder of a giant" というべき状況だが,この辺りはご愛敬で.

A Dwarf on the Shoulders of a Giant

さて,この慣用句OED の shoulder, n. のもとに挙げられているのだが,実は2022年3月の OED の定期更新の際に新たに加えられたホヤホヤのエントリーなのである.この新エントリーについて,OED の広報記事 "Content warning: may contain notes on the OED March 2022 update" が次のようにコメントしている.

A new phrase entry in shoulder examines the use of to stand on the shoulders of giants to refer to the process of building on the discoveries and achievements of great predecessors, first recorded in the early seventeenth century in a variation on the proverb a dwarf (or child) standing on the shoulders of a giant sees farther than the giant, itself based on a twelfth-century Latin phrase attributed to Bernard of Chartres.

 OED に加えられたエントリーそのもの,および最初の3つの例文まで引用しておきたい.

to stand on the shoulders of giants (and variants): to build on the discoveries, achievements, and understanding of the great scholars and thinkers of the past. Hence to stand on the shoulders of (any person or group): to benefit from the knowledge of one's predecessors.
The phrase standing on the shoulders of giants is strongly associated with Sir Isaac Newton (1642--1727): see quot. 1676. Earlier in proverbial phrase a dwarf (also child, etc.) standing on the shoulders of a giant sees farther than the giant (now rare; in quot. 1608 as a simile).

[Originally after post-classical Latin nanos gigantium humeris insidentes dwarves sitting on the shoulders of giants (12th cent.; attributed by John of Salisbury to Bernard of Chartres).]

1608 J. White Way to True Church 325 Doctors of these later times..insisting in the steps of the ancient Fathers..are like children standing on the shoulders of giants,..they see further then they [sc. the Fathers] themselues.
1628 R. Burton Anat. Melancholy (ed. 3) To Reader 8 Though there were many Giants of old in Physick and Philosophy, yet I say with Didacus Stella, A Dwarfe standing on the shoulders of a Giant, may see farther then a Giant himselfe.
1676 I. Newton Let. to R. Hooke 5 Feb. in Corr. (1959) I. 416 What Des-Cartes did was a good step. You have added much in several ways... If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants.

mouth について注目したい聖書由来のイディオムとして out of the mouths of babes (and sucklings) がある."Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger" (The Book of Psalms 8:2) に由来する表現だが,現在では子供から思いがけず発せられる鋭い言葉をユーモラスに指す表現となっている.
英語の mouth も日本語の「口」も,体の部位を表す身近な単語として両言語で意味拡張の様子がよく似ている。例えば,日本語の「河口」「噴火口」「洞穴の口」といった「口」のメタファーは,英語でも the mouth of a river/volcano/cave というようにそのまま対応する.一方,「口が悪い」「口を閉じる」は a foul mouth, shut one's mouth にそのまま対応するメトニミーである.

#4879. あらためてイディオムとは何か? [terminology][idiom]

A traditional definition of idiom runs roughly as follows: an idiom is an expression whose meaning cannot be inferred from the meanings of its parts. Although at first sight straightforward, there is a curious element of circularity in this definition. Does it indicate that the meaning of an idiom cannot be inferred from (or, more precisely, cannot be accounted for as a compositional function of) the meanings the parts carry IN THAT EXPRESSION? Clearly not --- so it must be a matter of their meanings in other expressions. But equally clearly, these 'other expressions' must be chosen with care: in considering to pull someone's leg, for instance, there is little point in referring to pull in to pull a fast one, or leg in He hasn't a leg to stand on. The definition must be understood as stating that an idiom is an expression whose meaning cannot be accounted for as a compositional function of the meanings its parts have when they are not parts of idioms. The circularity is now plain: to apply the definition, we must already be in a position to distinguish idiomatic from non-idiomatic expressions.
Fortunately it is possible to define an idiom precisely and non-circularly using the notion of a semantic constituent. We shall require two thing of an idiom: first, that it be lexically complex --- i.e. it should consist of more than one lexical constituent; second, that it should be a single minimal semantic constituent.

 ちなみに引用内の pull someone's leg は「~をからかう」を意味するイディオムである.また,pull a fast one は「だます」,He hasn't a leg to stand on は「彼は拠って立つべき基礎を欠く」の意のイディオムである.
結果として,循環論法にならないイディオムの端的な定義は "a lexical complex which is semantically simplex" (Cruse 37) ということになる.

The ball is in your court. といえば「次に行動を起こすべきは(私ではなく)あなただ」を意味する慣用句ですが,これはテニスのプレイに由来するものです
また,His idea is (way) out in left field.

We need to red pill it Canadians.
とか Take it easy. とか Damn it.

Perhaps the best case for a completely empty or 'nonreferring' it can be made with idioms in which it follows a verb and has vague implications of 'life' in general, etc:

At last we've made it. ['achieved success']
have a hard time of it ['to find life difficult']
make a go of it ['to make a success of something']
stick it out ['to hold out, to preserve']
   How's it going?
   Go it alone.
You're in for it. ['You're going to be in trouble.']

OED の it, pron., adj., and n.1 によると,語義8aのもとで問題の用法が取り上げられています.初出は以下の通り16世紀前半のようです.

8.
a. As a vague or indefinite object of a transitive verb, after a preposition, etc. Also as object of a verb which is predominantly intransitive, giving the same meaning as the intransitive use, and as object of many verbs formed (frequently in an ad hoc way) from nouns meaning 'act the character, use the thing, indicated'.
Through verbs having corresponding nouns of the same form, as to lord, the construction seems to have been extended to other nouns as king, queen, etc. There may have been some influence from do it as a substitute, not only for any transitive verb and its object, but for an intransitive verb of action, as in 'he tried to swim, but could not do it', where it is the action in question.
?1520 J. Rastell Nature .iiii. Element sig. Eviv And I can daunce it gyngerly..And I can kroke it curtesly And I can lepe it lustly And I can torn it trymly And I can fryske it freshly And I can loke it lordly.
   . . . .

#4400. 「犬猫」と cats and dogs の順序問題 [sound_symbolism][phonaesthesia][onomatopoeia][idiom][binomial][prosody][alliteration][phonetics][vowel][khelf_hel_intro_2021][clmet][coca][coha][bnc][sobokunagimon]

目下開催中の「英語史導入企画2021」より今日紹介するコンテンツは,学部生よりアップされた「犬猿ならぬ犬猫の仲!?」です.日本語ではひどく仲の悪いことを「犬猿の仲」と表現し,決して「犬猫の仲」とは言わないわけですが,英語では予想通り(?) cats and dogs だという興味深い話題です.They fight like cats and dogs. のように用いるほか,喧嘩ばかりして暮らしていることを to lead a cat-and-dog life などとも表現します.よく知られた「土砂降り」のイディオムも「#493. It's raining cats and dogs.」
対句ではありませんが,動詞の現在形と過去形で catch/caught, hang/hung, stand/stood などに舌の前後の対立が窺えます.

ほどの価値もない,取るに足りない」を意味する慣用句 (idiom) となる.not worth a fig/pea/peanut/leek/bean/straw の如くだ.
A drowning man will catch at a straw.

[idiom][terminology]

  イディオム (idiom) とは何か? 複数の語からなる単位で,全体の意味が各構成要素の意味の総和とはならないもの,というのが基本的な理解だろう.しかし,イディオムには他にも様々な特質がある.Chafe を引いている秋元 (38) に拠り,4つの特質を挙げてみよう.

1. イディオムの意味は各成分の意味の総和からは出てこない. ([T]he meaning of an idiom is not some kind of amalgamation of the meanings of the parts of that structure.)
2. イディオムの多くは変形操作を許さない. ([M]ost if not all idioms exhibit certain transformational deficiencies.)
3. イディオムの中には非統語的構造を持つものがある. ([T]here are some idioms which are not syntactically well-formed.)
4. イディオムがイディオム的意味と文字通りの意味を持っている場合,テキスト頻度上,前者の方が通常多い. ([A]n idiom which is well-formed will have a literal counterpart, but the text frequency of the latter is usually much lower than that of the corresponding idiom.)

2 でいわれる「変形操作」について説明しておこう.leave no legal stone unturned のように修飾語句を加えたり,touch a couple of nerves のように数量化したり,Those strings, he wouldn't pull for you のように話題化のために倒置したり,We thought tabs were being kept on us, but they weren't, のように代名詞指示できるなどの統語的操作のことである.ただし,変形操作をどの程度拒否・許容するかは個々のイディオムによって異なり,イディオムの特質とはいえ程度問題である.変形操作の許容度が低いものから高いものへ,次の3種類のイディオムがある(秋元,p. 39).

 I. Fixed idioms: eat one's words, kick the bucket, make a fool of, . . .
II. Mobile idioms: break the ice, spill the beans, make much of, . . .
III. Metaphors: add fuel to the fire, make headway, pay attention, . . .

#2771. by and large [idiom][etymology]

 標題は「概して, 一般的に, 全般的に見て」を意味するイディオムである.以下の例文のように,文頭に使われることが多い.

・ By and large I think the emphasis should be on recruiting the right people.
・ By and large, I enjoyed my time at school.
・ By and large, the papers greet the government's new policy document with a certain amount of scepticism.
・ Charities, by and large, do not pay tax.
・ There are a few small things that I don't like about my job, but by and large it's very enjoyable.

 なぜ bylarge を結びつけて「概して」の意味になるのだろうか.
実は,いずれももともとは航海で用いられる表現である.by はここでは「風に向かって」 (by the wind) ほどを意味する副詞ととらえられる.前置詞 by は「?に向かって」 (toward) を意味することがあり,例えば do well by a friend (友だちによくしてやる),do one's duty by one's parents (両親に本分を尽す),Do to others as you would be done by.
これが,やがて「あちこち,全般にわたって」 ("in one direction and another, all ways") の意味で1706年に現われ,さらに現在の「概して」 ("in a general aspect, without entering into details, on the whole") の意味で1833年に用いられている.意味の一般化の例と言っていいだろう.以下にそれぞれの意味の初出例を OED より挙げておこう.

・ 1669 S. Sturmy Mariners Mag. 17 Thus you see the ship handled in fair weather and foul, by and learge.
・ 1707 E. Ward Wooden World Dissected 35 Tho' he trys every way, both by and large, to keep up with his Leader.
・ 1833 J. Neal Down-easters I. 23 A man who feels rather perplexed on the whole, take it by and large.

#2597. Book of Common Prayer (1549) [bible][history][literature][book_of_common_prayer][idiom]

「祈祷書」(英国教会の礼拝の公認式文)として知られる The Book of Common Prayer の初版は,1549年に編纂された.宗教改革者にしてカンタベリー大主教の Thomas Crammer (1489--1556) を中心とする当時の主教たちが編纂し出版したものであり,その目的は,書き言葉においても話し言葉においても正式とみなされる英語の祈祷文を定めることだった.正式名称は The Booke of the Common Prayer and administracion of the Sacramentes, and other Rites and Ceremonies after the Use of the Churche of England である.

 (1) actual vs lexical meaning.

 (2) general vs particular meaning. 例えば The dog is a domestic animal. の主語は集合的・総称的な意味をもつが,That dog is mad. の主語は個別の意味をもつ.すべての名前は,このように種を表わす総称的な用法と個体を表わす個別的な用法をもつ.名詞とは若干性質は異なるが,形容詞や動詞にも同種の区別がある.

 (3) specialised vs referential meaning. ある語の指示対象がいくつかの性質を有するとき,話者はそれらの性質の1つあるいはいくつかに焦点を当てながらその語を用いることがある.例えば He was a man, take him for all in all. という文において man は,ある種の道徳的な性質をもっているものとして理解されている.このような指示の仕方がなされるとき,用いられている語は specialised meaning を有しているとみなされる.一方,He had an army of ten thousand men. というときの men は,各々の個性がかき消されており,あくまで指示的な意味 (referential meaning) を有するにすぎない.厳密には,referential meaning は specialised meaning と対立するというよりは,その特殊な現われ方の1つととらえるべきだろう.前項の particular meaning と 本項の specialised meaning は混同しやすいが,particular meaning は語の指示対象の範囲の限定として,specialised meaning は語の意味範囲の限定としてとらえることができる.

 (4) tied vs contingent meaning. 前者は語と言語的文脈により指示対象が決定する場合の意味であり,後者はそれだけでは指示対象が決定せず話者やその他の状況をも考慮に入れなければならない場合の意味である.前者は意味論的な意味,後者は語用論的な意味といってもよい.

 (5) basic vs relational meaning. Jack beats Jill. vs Jill beats Jack.) もすれば,何によっても表わされないこともある.一方,派生関係的意味 (derivational relational meaning) は,例えば like -- liken -- likeness のシリーズにみられるような -en や -ness 接尾辞によって表わされている.大雑把にいって,統語関係的意味と派生関係的意味は,それぞれ屈折接辞と派生接辞に対応すると考えることができる.

 (6) word- vs phrase-meaning. あらゆる種類の慣用句 (idiom) や慣用的な文 (ex. How do you do?) を思い浮かべればわかるように,句の意味は,しばしばそれを構成する複数の単語の意味の和にはならない.

 (7) autosemantic vs synsemantic meaning.

[lexeme][terminology][semantics][morphology][word][idiom][word][morpheme]

 lexeme (語彙素)はこのブログでもたまに出してきた術語だが,正確に定義しようとすると難しい.「#22. イディオムと英語史」 ([2009-05-20-1]) でも説明を濁してきた.今回は,ずばり定義とまではいかないが,いくつかの英語学辞典等を参照して,どのような言語単位であるかを整理したい.lexeme に迫るにはいくつかのアプローチがある.

 (1) morpheme (形態素)や word (語)と比較される形式の単位として.morpheme の定義は,「#886. 形態素にまつわる通時的な問題」 ([2011-09-30-1]) で触れたように,決定版はないが,Bloomfield の古典的な定義によれば "a linguistic form which bears no partial phonetic-semantic resemblance to any other form" (Section 10.2) である.word の定義は,##910,911,912,921,922 で取り上げたように,さらに難しい.

It is important to emphasize that . . . changes which affected the grammatical structure of English after the Norman Conquest were not the result of contact with the French language. Certain idioms and syntactic usages that appear in Middle English are clearly the result of such contact. But the decay of inflections and the confusion of forms that constitute the truly significant development in Middle English grammar are the result of the Norman Conquest only insofar as that event brought about conditions favorable to such changes. By removing the authority that a standard variety of English would have, the Norman Conquest made it easier for grammatical changes to go forward unchecked. Beyond this it is not considered a factor in syntactic changes.

#1164. as far as in me lies [idiom][preposition][chaucer][impersonal_verb]

 Chaucer の The Canterbury Tales より,The Parson's Tale を読んでいて,次の箇所で立ち止まった(Riverside版より).語り手である教区主任司祭が,呪いの悪徳について説いている箇所である.

And over alle thyng men oghten eschewe to cursen hire children, and yeven to the devel hire engendrure, as ferforth as in hem is. Certes, it is greet peril and greet synne. (l. 621)

引用の赤で強調した as ferforth as in hem is という副詞節の意味がわからない.参照した翻訳はいずれも「できる限り」と訳出しているが,なぜそのような意味が出るのかが不明だった.そこで,一緒に読んでいた仲間と考えたり調べたりしていたが,一人が,これは現代英語の as far as in me lies なる慣用表現に相当することを突き止めた.これは,"as far as lies in my power" とも言い換えられ,つまるところ "as far as I can", "to the best of my ability" ほどの意味であるということだ.大英和辞典には載っているし,『NEW斎藤和英大辞典』にも「及ぶ限り力を尽そう」に対応する I will do all that in me lies. というような類例が見つかる.ただし,Chaucer の例文に見られるような中英語の構文は,人称主語が立っておらず,非人称構文とみなすべきだろう.
 OED では,lie, v.1 で語義 12c. のもとに次のようにある.初例はc1350.

to lie in (a person): to rest or centre in him; to depend upon him, be in his power (to do). Now chiefly in phr. as far as in (me, etc.) lies. Also, to lie in one's power, to lie in (or †on) one's hands.

MED では,lien (v. (1)) の語義 11(c) のもとに,"~ in, to be within the bounds of possibility for (sb., his power, his knowledge, etc.);" とある.MED から集めた関連する例文を挙げよう.lie の代わりに be が使われているものも少なくない.

・ (1433) RParl. 4.423a: My Lorde of Bedford..be his grete wisdome and manhede..hath nobly doon his devoir to ye kepyng yerof..as ferforth as in hym hath bee.
・ (1447) Reg.Spofford in Cant.Yk.S.23 290: Ye shall..trewlie serve all the kynges writtes als ferforth as hit shall be in your konnyng.
・ (?a1450) Proc.Privy C. 6.319: Ye shall swere þat, as ferforth as in you shall be, ye aswell in visityng and overseeing as in writing and subscribing of billes, the articles abovesaide and eueriche of þeim that touche ye shall trewely justely and faithfully observe.
・ a1450(?c1421) Lydg. ST (Arun 119) 2366: As ferforth as it lith in me, Trusteth right wel 3e shul no faute fynde.
 ・ a1500(a1450) Gener.(2) (Trin-C O.5.2) 3109: It lithe in me The Sowdon to distroye.

 この前置詞 in の用法は内在・性格・素質・資格とでも呼ぶべき用法で,現代英語では次のような例文で確認される.

・ in the capacity of interpreter = in my capacity as interpreter (通訳の資格で)
・ He had something of the hero in his nature. (彼には多少豪傑肌のところがあった.)
・ He doesn't have it in him to cheat. (彼は不正をするような人ではない.)
・ I didn't think he had it in him (to succeed). (彼にそんな事ができるとは思わなかった.)
・ He has no malice in him. = It is not in him to be malicious. (彼には意地悪なところがない.)
・ I have found a friend in him. (私は彼という友を見出した.)
・ Our country has lost a great scholar in Dr. Fletcher. (我が国はフレッチャー博士という大学者を失った.)
・ I have tried every means in my power. (力に及ぶ限りの手段を尽した.)

#1139. 2項イディオムの順序を決める音声的な条件 (2) [phonetics][syllable][binomial][idiom][prosody][alliteration][phonaesthesia]

He lives in a plap and plam house." vs "He lives in a plam and plap house."

(1) [phonetics][stress][binomial][idiom][prosody]

 同じ形態類の2語から成る表現を (2項イディオム)と呼ぶ.##953,954,955 の記事では,押韻に着目して数々の binomial を紹介した.binomial は "A and B" のように典型的に等位接続詞で結ばれるが,構成要素の順序はたいてい固定している.必ずしもイディオムとして固定していない場合にも,傾向として好まれる順序というものがある.なぜある場合には "A and B" が好まれ,別の場合には "D and C" が好まれるのだろうか.音節数や音価など,特に音声的な条件というものがあるのだろうか.
Bolinger は,現代英語の傾向として「短い語 and 長い語」の順序が好まれることを指摘している.この長短の差は,典型的に音節数の違いとして現われる.その典型は「1音節語 and 第1音節に強勢のある2音節語」である.名詞を修飾する形容詞の例をいくつか挙げれば,a bows-and-arrows project, cold and obvious fact, drum-and-bugle corps, floor-to-ceiling window, fresh and frisky pups, furred and feathered creatures, a red and yellow river, strong and bitter political factor, up-and-coming writer などがある (Bolinger 36) .他にも例はたくさんある.

black and sooty, blue and silver, bright and rosy, bright and shiny, bruised and battered, cheap and nasty, cloak and dagger, drawn and quartered, fast and furious, fat and fulsome, fat and sassy, fine and dandy, fine and fancy, free and easy, full and equal, gay and laughing, grim and weary, hale and hearty, high and handsome, high and mighty, hot and bothered, hot and healthy, hot and heavy, hot and spicy, lean and lanky, long and lazy, low and lonely, married or widowed, plain and fancy, poor but honest, pure and simple, rough and ready, rough and tumble, slick and slimy, slow and steady, straight and narrow, strong and stormy, tried and tested, true and trusty, warm and winning, wild and woolly

一覧してすぐにわかるが,いずれの binomial も強弱強弱の心地よいリズムとなる.もちろん tattered and torn, peaches and cream, merry and wise, open and shut, early and later などのように,強弱弱強となる binomial もあるにはあるが,例外的と考えてよさそうだ.
