Also indicative of early settlement are place-names referring to religious or other customs that were later superseded. Place-names referring to Anglo-Saxon paganism represent an early stratum which must pre-date the conversion to Christianity around 627. In England they fall into two main groups: those containing the names of pagan gods, and those containing a word for a heathen shrine or temple. Examples of the former are Tysoe (Tiw + OE hōh 'heel; hill-spur'), Wensley (Woden + OE lēah 'wood, clearing'), Thursley (Thunor + OE lēah 'wood, clearing', and Friden (Frig + denu 'valley'); examples of the latter are Harrow (OE hearg 'temple') and Weeford (OE wēoh 'shrine' + ford 'ford). The absence of either type from the corpus of Old English place-names in Scotland is usually taken to indicate that the Anglo-Saxons did not move north until after the conversion to Christianity, although this has been challenged on the grounds that pagan names are also absent from large areas of England . . . .

 このような異教的地名がスコットランドには認められないという議論も意味深長である.

#5232. 人名・地名の原資料としての Domesday Book [domesday_book][oe][norman_conquest][manuscript][onomastics][name_project][personal_name][toponymy]

For late OE name-forms of both kinds Domesday Book (DB) is the prime source; for many place-names, those from the North especially, it furnishes the earliest record extant . . . . DB proper consists of two volumes (recently rebound as five), always part of the state archives and now housed in the Public Record Office, wherefore they are together known as the 'Exchequer Domesday'. The two sections are, it must be emphasised, of different standing: 'Little DB', which deals with Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, represents a redaction earlier and fuller --- therefore more useful to onomasticians --- than that of 'Great DB', which deals with the rest of the Conqueror's English realm. There are also various related records, usually known as 'satellites', some (like Exon DB) official, others private . . .; on matters ranging from administrative procedure to orthography, these supplement the information given by the Exchequer volumes. Although DB as it stands results from a survey undertaken in 1086, roughly half the material there dates back to pre-Conquest times. Based as they were upon enquiries made by several panels of commissioners who collected documentary as well as oral evidence and interrogated alike French-speaking post-Conquest settlers and survivors of the pre-Conquest land-holding classes, the extant DB texts, in which the commissioners' returns have to varying degrees been recast, need careful handling. At the orthographical level, basic to onomastic study, they are notoriously unreliable. For one thing, not all the scribes used the traditional OE orthography . . . . For another, working conditions were unpropitious: name-material, unlike common vocabulary, cannot be predicted from context, and so the DB clerks, interpreting utterances of witnesses from varied linguistic backgrounds, sometimes perhaps toothless ancients, and editing drafts that bristled with unfamiliarities, were liable to mishear, misread, misunderstand, miscopy or otherwise mangle the forms. Only lately has appreciation of the types and degrees of scribal error in DB made progress enough for former broad assumptions --- for instance, about 'Anglo-Norman influences' --- to be gradually replaced by recognition of specific auditory and visual confusions.

#5218. スコットランド地名の強勢位置は数世紀を経ても変わらない? [onomastics][toponymy][stress][namae_project][germanic][celtic][scottish_gaelic][pictish][scots_english]

 「#5212. 地名学者はなぜフィールドワークをするのか?」 ([2023-08-04-1]) で言及した Taylor の論文の後半で,スコットランド地名の強勢位置に関する驚くべき見解に出くわした (82--83) .語源を提供した言語が話されなくなって数世紀の時間を経たとしても,地名の強勢位置は保たれる傾向があるということだ.規則ではなく傾向ということのようだが,逆にいえば強勢位置の確認によって語源提供言語がある程度の確率で特定できるということにもつながる.

It is very important to record how a place-name is pronounced, since this can yield vital clues for its correct analysis. For example it is a general, though by no means universal, rule that place-names which are stressed on the first element are in languages of Germanic origin, such as Scots or Norse, while place-names which are stressed on the second or third element are of Celtic origin, such as Pictish or Gaelic. It would be more accurate to say that in both language groups it is the specific element which bears the stress, but that in Scots and Norse names the specific usually comes first, the generic second, while in names of Celtic origin it is usually the other way round. It is a remarkable fact that the original stress pattern of a name tends to survive, even when the original language of coining has not been spoken locally for many hundreds of years.

[onomastics][toponymy][methodology]

地名学者 (toponymist) は机に向かって研究することが多いという.昨今は Google Earth や3次元モデリングの地図ソフトなどを利用するコンピュータ上の作業も多くなっているようだ.一方,フィールドワークという実地検分も欠かせないという.
 スコットランドの地名を研究している Simon Taylor という地名学者が,固有名詞学に関するハンドブックのなかの1節で,フィールドワークについて次のように書いている.地名学者の生態が垣間見える良い話しだなと思ったので引用しておきたい.

There is much in the life and work of the toponymist which involves sitting at a desk, whether at home, in a library, or in an archive. Equally, there are aspects essential to the work which involve 'getting out and about'; for the purposes not just of interrogating those who live in a landscape, as in the collection of oral material, but of interrogating the landscape itself. There are many cases in which the landscape offers the key to the interpretation of a name. Ambiguity and doubt abound especially in the interpretation of names which have been mediated by a language or languages different from the one in which they were originally coined, and it is often only a careful consideration of the physical landscape, past and present, which can offer any chance of certainty. While some of this can be done through maps, and with the recently available online resources such as Google Earth and the 3D modelling of maps in such programs as Fugawi UK, there is, for the foreseeable future at least, no substitute for being in and moving through the actual landscape.

Even in cases in which there is little or no doubt concerning a given element, a detailed engagement with the landscape can shed much light on the precise definition and application of the element involved, bringing us closer to the mindset and motivations of the original name-givers. (Taylor 75)

The Gaelic Notes in the Book of Deer というスコットランド・ゲール語で書かれたテキストのなかに記録されている.このテキストの中身は,10世紀の福音書抜粋のなかに12世紀になって書き込まれた Deer 教会の資産記録である.
Deer という名前の由来は,おそらくピクト語で「オークの木」を意味する *derw- と想定されている.しかし,すでに The Gaelic Notes in the Book of Deer

 1. geographical formulations: 住所,緯度・経度,方角,距離
 2. relation to members formulations: 「鈴木君の家」「私の学校」
 3. relation to landmarks formulations: 「駅の前」「橋の近く」
 4. course of action places: 「私が初めて彼女と出会った駅」「このチーズを買ったスーパー」
 5. place names: 「

   ZERO MARKING, as in city and town names: London, Berlin;

   SUFFIXING, as in country names: Fin-land, German-y;

   ARTICLE PREPOSING, as in names of, e.g. fields, regions, and rivers: the Highlands, the Rhine;

The use of CLASSIFIERS plus possibly an article, as in names of seas, oceans, or deserts: the North Sea, the Gobi Desert

この地名にみられる有標性の階層は,人間の組織的な関与の深さと連動しているのではないかという.人間社会にとって,都市や国はきわめて重要な対象だが,それに比べれば広域・河川・海・砂漠などは人間社会への影響が何段階か小さいように思われる.上記の階層は「人間中心の」連続体 ("'anthropocentric' cline") といってよさそうだ (Van Langendonck 34) .
 さらに Van Langendonck (34) は,定冠詞の有無に関して,示唆に富んだ見解を述べている.

. . . English shows the humanized place-names (e.g. settlement names) omitting the article, whilst the non-human place-names (e.g. river names) tend to adopt the article. This can be observed where the names of former colonies or regions lose their article when they become independent countries: the Ukraine > Ukraine, The Congo > Congo, the Lebanon > Lebanon.

Van Langendonck and Van de Velde (33--38)

これは,例えば "Bank is a homonymous word."

. . . names are definite nouns with unique denotation, an inherent basic level sense, no defining sense, and optional connotative meanings. (3)

Onomastics is essentially inter-disciplinary, and it might be difficult to identify any major subject area to which it is completely unrelated. (9)

 イントロの最後では,固有名詞学を取り巻く近年の熱気について次のようにある.

As well as outlining the current state of name studies in its various branches, the chapters in this volume show the discipline continuing to expand and to develop into new areas. To mention a few examples from different sections, de Stefani introduces the concept of interactional onomastics, Neethling argues for song lyrics as a legitimate area of investigation for literary onomastics, Sandnes introduces contact onomastics as a branch of contact linguistics, and some of the legal cases cited by Teutsch show changes still in progress through ongoing rulings with a binding effect. Research within name studies is vigorous, vibrant, and innovative, and if this volume had been produced twenty or even ten years ago, many of the chapters would have been radically different or even absent. We can be confident that a similar undertaking in another ten or twenty years would be as different again. (13--14)

人名 (personal_name),地名,eponym など.
言語権 (linguistic_right) や言語計画 (language_planning) のテーマ.

 細かく挙げていくとキリがなさそうですが,これを機に商標の言語学の存在を念頭に置いていきたいと思います.

#5090. 人名ベースの造語は eponym だが,では地名ベースの造語は何と呼ぶ? [eponym][toponymy][onomastics][personal_name][etymology][metonymy][semantic_change][word_formation][lexicology][terminology]

alsatian: Alsace, France.
balaclava: Balaclava, Crimea.

 1. Place-names embody important material for the history of England. (例えば,イングランドのスカンディナヴィア系の地名は,スカンディナヴィア系植民地に関する重要な情報を与えてくれる.)
 2. Place names have something to tell us about Anglo-Saxon religion and belief before the conversion to Christianity. (例えば,Wedenesbury という地名は Wōden 信仰についてなにがしかを物語っている.)
 3. Some place-names indicate familiarity with old heroic sagas in various parts of England. (例えば,『ベオウルフ』にちなむ Grendels mere 参照.)
 4. Place-names give important information on antiquities. (例えば,Stratford という地名はローマン・ブリテン時代の道 stræt を表わす.)
 5. Place-names give information on early institutions, social conditions, and the like. (例えば,Kingston という地名は,王領地であったことを示唆する.)
 6. Place-names are of great value for linguistic study.
   (a) They frequently contain personal names, and are therefore a source of first-rate importance for our knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon personal nomenclature. (例えば,Godalming という地名の背後には Godhelm という人名が想定される.)
   (b) Place-names contain many old words not otherwise recorded. They show that Old Englsih preserved several words found in other Germanic languages, but not found in Old English literature. (例えば,Doiley という地名は,古英語では一般的に文証されていない diger "thick" の存在を示唆する.)
   (c) Place-names often afford far earlier references for words than those found in literature. (例えば,dimple という語は OED によると1400年頃に初出するとされるが「くぼ地」を意味する地名要素としては1205年頃に現われる.)
   (d) the value of place-names for the history of English sounds.

The status of proper names
Names is a technical term for a subset of the nominal expressions of a language which are used for referring ('identifying or selecting in context') and, in some cases, for addressing a partner in communication. Nominal expressions are in general headed by nouns. According to one of the most ancient distinctions in linguistics, nouns may be common or proper, which has something to do with whether they denote a class or an individual (e.g. queen vs Victoria), where individual means a single-member set of any sort, not just a person. Much discussion has taken place about how this distinction should be refined to be both accurate and useful, for instance by addressing the obvious difficulty that a typical proper noun denoting persons may denote many separate individuals who bear it, and that common nouns may refer to individuals by being constructed into phrases (the queen). I will leave the concept [賊proper], applied to nouns, for intuitive or educated recognition before returning to discussion of the inclusive concept of proper names directly. Proper nouns have no inherent semantic content, even when they are homonymous with lexical words (Daisy, Wells), and many, perhaps all, cultures recognise nouns whose sole function is to be proper (Sarah, Ipswich). Typically they have a unique intended referent in a context of utterance. Proper names are the class of such proper nouns included in the class of all expressions which have the properties of being devoid of sense and being used with the intention of achieving unique reference in context. Onomastics is the study of proper names, and concentrates on proper nouns; I shall confine the main subject-matter of this chapter to the institutionalised proper nouns associated with English and, in accordance with ordinary usage, I shall call them proper names or just names. Readers should note that strictly speaking these are a subset of proper names, and from time to time other members of the larger set will be discussed. There is some evidence from aphasiology and cognitive neuropsychology that institutionalised proper nouns --- especially personal names --- form a psychologically real class . . . .

Gladness danc'd along the sky---Thompson, Epithalanium (喜びは空を踊りながら進んで行った) / Let not Ambition mock their useful toils---Gray, Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard (野心をして彼らの有益な労役を侮らせるなかれ) / O stretch thy reign, fair Peace---Pope, Windsor Forest (うるわしの平和よ,汝の領土を広げよ).
c) 地名または一般の事物の擬人化
That Thame's glory to the stars shall rise!---Pope, Windsor Forest (テムズの栄光よ星まで届け) / Thy forest, Windsor!---Pope, ibid. (汝の森,ウインザーよ) / And weary waves, withdraw[n]ing from the Fight, die lull'd and panting on the silent Shore (疲れた波は戦いより退きて,物言わぬ岸の上でなだめられ,あえぎながらその身を横たえる).

Onomastics is the study of names, its two main branches being toponymy (the study of place-names) and anthroponymy (the study of people's names). Traditionally regarded as a sub-class of nouns having reference but no sense, names occupy a special position within language in that they can be used without understanding of semantic content. Partly for this reason, they tend to have a high survival rate, outlasting changes and developments in the lexicon, and easily being taken over by new groups of speakers in situations of language contact. Since most names originate as descriptive phrases, they preserve evidence for early lexis, often within areas of vocabulary sparsely represented in other sources. Many place-names, and some surnames, are still associated with their place of origin, so the data also contribute to the identification of dialectal isoglosses. Moreover, since names are generally coined in speech rather than in writing, they testify to a colloquial register of language as opposed to the more formal registers characteristic of documentary records and literary texts. Much research has been directed towards establishing the etymologies of names whose origins are no longer transparent, using a standard methodology whereby a comprehensive collection of early spellings is assembled for each name in order to trace its historical development. These spellings themselves can then be used to reveal morphological and phonological changes over the course of time, often illustrating trends in non-onomastic as well as onomastic language. The relationship between the two is not always straightforward, however, since the factors pertaining to the formation and transmission of names are in some respects unique.

Italia -- Italiānus, Fabius -- Fabiānus, Vergilius -- Vergiliānus) .
英語はこのラテン語の語形成にならい,-ian 接尾辞により固有名詞の形容詞(およびその形容詞に対応する名詞)を次々と作り出してきた.例を挙げれば,Addisonian, Arminian, Arnoldian, Bodleian, Cameronian, Gladstonian, Hoadleian, Hugonian, Johnsonian, Morrisonian, Ruskinian, Salisburyian, Shavian, Sheldonian, Taylorian, Tennysonian, Wardian, Wellsian, Wordsworthian; Aberdonian, Bathonian, Bostonian, Bristolian, Cantabrigian, Cornubian, Devonian, Galwegian, Glasgowegian, Johnian, Oxonian, Parisian, Salopian, Sierra Leonian などである.
