今月8日にエリザベス女王 (Elizabeth II) が亡くなり，本日19日にウェストミンスター寺院にて国葬が営まれる予定とのことです．統治期間はイギリス史上最長の70年．まさに1つの歴史を刻んだ君主でした．そして，チャールズ国王 (Charles III) が新たに即位しました．
これまで Queen's English と呼ばれてきた，いわゆるイギリス標準英語は，今後は King's English という呼称に回帰することになると思います．この機会に King's English や Queen's English という呼び方について少々調べ，今朝の Voicy 「英語の語源が身につくラジオ (heldio)」にて「#476. King's English と Queen's English」と題してしゃべってみました．
放送内で触れた OED による両表現の初出について，以下で補っておきます．まず，King's English については，king, n. の下で，次のように説明と用例が与えられています．
King's English n. [apparently after king's coin n.] (chiefly with the) the English language regarded as under the guardianship of the King of England; (hence) standard or correct English, usually taken as that written and spoken by educated people in Britain; cf. いずれも読ませる例文が選ばれており，さすが OED と感心します．両表現とも初出年代が16世紀というのが，またおもしろいところです．英国ルネサンスの真っ只中にあった当時，ラテン語やギリシア語などの古典語に対する憧れが高まっていましたが，その一方でヴァナキュラーである英語への自信も少しずつ深まってきていました．その国語の自信を支える「顔」として，政治上のトップである君主が選ばれたことは自然なことです．その伝統が現在まで400年以上続いているというのは，やはり息の長いことだと思います．
