英詩の父と称されるジェフリー・チョーサーによる中世英文学の傑作『カンタベリ物語』の総序の冒頭を、英語史の知識を補いながら中英語の原文で味わいます。冒頭箇所は英文学史上に名高い文章とされ、その格調高さや小気味よい韻律を最大限に堪能するためには、原文に触れることが欠かせません。チョーサーの英文は、少々のコツさえつかめば、現代英語の知識を頼りに読み進めることが十分に可能です。本講座で、中世イングランドの風景を覗いてみましょう。メニューは以下の通りです．

When April with its sweet showers has thoroughly pierced the drought of March and bathed every vein in such moisture, from which power the flower is begotten; when Zephyr also with his sweet breath has breathed upon the tender shoots in every holt and heath, and the young sun has run his half course in the Ram and small birds make melody that sleep all the night with open eye, --- so Nature incites them in their feelings, --- then people long to go on pilgrimages, and palmers (long) to seek strange strands. To far-off shrines, known in sundry lands, and specially, from the end of every shire of England, they go to Canterbury, to seek the holy blissful martyr, who has cured them when they were sick.
時は四月。
夕立がやわらかにやってきて、三月ひでりの根本までしみとおってしまう。そのおしめりの精気で花が生まれて咲いてくる。
そよ風もまた、香ばしい息を吹いて、どこの山林地にも荒野にも、柔かい新芽が枝にふいてきた。
まだ若い太陽も、春分からめぐり出して、白羊宮を半分以上もめぐってきた四月の初旬。
ナイチンゲールという小鳥は、夜中もおちおち眠らないで、美しい節回しで鳴いている。
それほどまでに、自然の力というものは、小鳥の心でさえも、やるせなく突くものか。
こんな季節になると、人々は霊廟の巡礼にあこがれて、遠い諸国の国々へ旅立つのだ。
パレスチナの聖地巡礼をする人は、海を越えて、外国へとあこがれる。
とくにイギリスでは、どの州のはてからも、カンタベリの巡礼を思いたち、病気をいやしてくだされた、聖トマスの参詣に出かけるのだ。
