#1919. 英語の拡散に関わる4つの crossings [history][irish][ireland][standardisation][linguistic_imperialism][ame][new_englishes][bilingualism][historiography][model_of_englishes][esl][efl][elf]

Mesthrie and Rakesh (12--17) に,"INTEGRATING NEW ENGLISHES INTO THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPLEX" と題する章があり,World Englishes あるいは New Englishes という現代的な視点からの英語史のとらえ方が示されており,感心した.
前者は the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, St. Helena, the Falklands などのいわゆる ENL 地域,後者はアフリカやアジアのいわゆる ESL 地域に対応する(「#177.

A prescriptive grammar is essentially a manual that focuses on constructions where usage is divided, and lays down rules governing the socially correct use of language. These grammars were a formative influence on language attitudes in Europe and America during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their influence lives on in the handbooks of usage widely found today, such as A Dictionary of Modern English Usage (1926) by Henry Watson Fowler (1858--1933), though such books include recommendations about the use of pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary, as well as grammar.

A descriptive grammar describes the form, meaning, and use of grammatical units and constructions in a language, without making any evaluative judgements about their standing in society. These grammars became commonplace in 20th-century linguistics, where it was standard practice to investigate a corpus of spoken or written material, and to describe in detail the patterns it contains.

 さらに,記述文法が包括的になると「参考文法」というカテゴリーに移行するという指摘がある.これは規範主義的な目的で参照されることもあるため,そのような場合には,規範と記述の中間点にあるともいえる.

When a descriptive grammar acts as a reference guide to all patterns of usage in a language, it is often called a reference grammar. An example is A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language (1985) by Randolph Quirk (1920--) and his associates. Such grammars are not primarily pedagogical in intent, as their aim --- like that of a 'reference lexicon', or unabridged dictionary --- is to be as comprehensive as possible. They provide a sourcebook of data from which writers of pedagogical grammars can draw their material.

IIIIIIIVV

(2) [historiography][emode][language_change][variety][variation][new_englishes]

 「#339. 英語史が近代英語期で止まってしまったかのように見える理由」 ([2010-04-01-1]) や 「#386. 現代英語に起こっている変化は大きいか小さいか」 ([2010-05-18-1]) に引き続いての話題.この問題について,Knowles にも関連する言及を見つけた.

The fixing of the language can give the superficial impression that the history of English came to an end some time towards the end of the eighteenth century. It is true that there has been little subsequent change in the forms of the standard language, at least in the written standard language. There have been substantial changes in non-standard spoken English. In any case what were actually fixed were the forms of Standard English. The way these forms have been used in different social situations has continued to change. (136)

The principle of chronological sequence once adopted still leaves a choice --- to move forward from the earliest records to the present day, or back from the present day to the earliest records. Most historians have preferred to move towards the present day. Yet this is an enterprise in which it is doubtfully wise to 'Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.' The most important reasons for this are clear in the very formulation of the King's directive to the White Rabbit, in the implication that there is a beginning and an end. Something begins, of course; the documentation of the language. But, however carefully one hedges the early chapters about, it is difficult to avoid giving the impression that there is a beginning to the English language. At every point in history, each generation has been initiated into the language-community of its seniors; the form of the language is different every time, but process and situation are the same, wherever we make an incision into history. The English language does not have a beginning in the sense commonly understood --- a sense tied to the false belief that some languages are older than others. / At the other terminal it is almost impossible to free oneself from the teleological force of words like 'end'. The chronological narrative comes to an end because we do not know how to continue it beyond the present day; but the story is always 'to be continued'. Knowing this perfectly well, one is yet liable to bias the narrative in such a way as to subordinate the question 'How was it in such a period'? to the question 'How does the past explain the present?' Both are important question, but the first is more centrally historical. / In addition, the adoption of reverse chronological order imposes on us the discipline of asking the same questions of every period; this is salutary even where it does no more than force us to acknowledge our ignorance.

Indo-European Family Tree with GraphViz
Reversed Indo-European Family Tree with GraphViz

 Baily and Maroldt が論争を開いた1970年代以降,クレオール語研究が盛んになり,とりわけ言語進化論や社会言語学へ大きな刺激を与えてきたという状況は,間違いなく関与している.
 言語進化論との関係でいえば,Baily and Maroldt は,言語と生物の比喩を強烈に押し出している.

One of the authors has for more than a half-dozen years been contending that internal language-change will result only in new subsystems, while creolization is required for the creation of a new system, i.e. a new node on a family tree. Each node on a family tree therefore has to have, like humans, at least two parents. (22)

A closing word on the value of creolization will not be amiss. Just as the evolution of plants and animals became vastly more adaptive, once sexual reproduction became a reality --- because then the propagation of mutations through crossing of strains became feasible --- so creolization enables languages to adapt themselves to new communicative needs in a much less restricted way than is otherwise open to most languages. Thus creolization has the same adaptive and survival value for languages as sexual cross-breeding has for the world of plants or animals. The flexibility and adaptability which have made English so valuable as a world-wide medium of communication are no doubt due to its long history of creolization. (53)

#1250. 中英語はクレオール語か? (3) [creole][me][french][old_norse][contact][historiography]

 (2) "In the instability created by the second, or minor, French creolization is to be seen the origin of the Great Vowel Shift, which, more than anything else, created modern English" (31). (同論文中に関連する言及がほかにないので,この文が何を意味しているのかほとんど不明である.)
 (3) "The Anglo-Saxon suffix -līċe (ME -ly), which has a functional counterpart in French -ment, is hardly an example of the reduction of inflections! This is in accord with the assumption of creolization" (33).

(2) [creole][me][old_norse][contact][historiography][pchron]

It is argued that the fundamental changes which took place between standard literary OE and Chancery Standard English: loss of grammatical gender, extreme simplification of inflexions and borrowing of form-words and common lexical words, may be ascribed to a creolization with Old Scandinavian during the OE period. The Midland creole dialect could have stabilized as a spoken lingua franca in the reign of Knut. Its non-appearance in literature was due initially to the prestige of the OE literary standard. (84)

Milroy の "Historical Description and the Ideology of the Standard Language."

 (1) "the chief linguistic consequence of successful standardisation is a high degree of uniformity of structure" (13)
  uniformity の現われとして,正しい語法と誤った語法が明確に区別される(その基準は言語的には恣意的だが,社会言語学的には恣意的でない);実際にはこの変種の話者はいない;対置される非標準英語の立場も明確になる.
 (2) "standardisation is implemented and promoted primarily through written forms of language" (14)
  これにより,書き言葉偏重の英語史記述が促進される.
 (3) "standardisation inhibits linguistic change and variability" (14)
  標準英語が言語変化を完全に取り込まないというわけではないが,取り込む速度はゆっくりである.標準化が言語変化を嫌うということは,Swift や Johnson の時代から少しも変わっていない.
 (4) "the equation of the standard language with the prestige language" (15)
  prestige language とは少人数によって話されるにすぎない権威ある変種を指す.ただし,"prestige" という概念は分析されない社会的カテゴリーを表わすものであり,実体はわかっていない.経済的に区別される階級と重なることも多いが,必ずしも一致せず,多くの研究が必要とされている概念である.
 (5) "carefulness and clarity of enunciation" (19)

A "period" is by definition a part of a language continuum; it should be a "natural" stage within the documentable history of a language. Its historical reality is not simply assured by scholarly tradition or practice, but only by definitely established, describable initial and terminal boundaries and by criteria applicable to the corpus of the entire period in question. (261)

A major advantage of specific and maximal periodization is the fact that it by no means handicaps the description of the transition to adjacent periods, but on the contrary forces the historiographers to consider internal change as well as internal cohesion and the impact of external historical events. (266)

#1173. 言語変化の必然と偶然 [synthesis_to_analysis][inflection][old_norse][contact][causation][historiography][language_change][philosophy_of_language]

#1123. 言語変化の原因と歴史言語学 [language_change][causation][prediction_of_language_change][historiography]

. . . there is no more reason for languages to change than there is for automobiles to add fins one year and remove them the next, for jackets to have three buttons one year and two the next.

 Postal によれば,言語変化の原因は探ることができないものであり,探ってもしかたのないものである.一方で,Smith はこの考え方を批判している.個々の言語変化の原因は究極的には解明できないかもしれないが,一般論として言語変化の原因は議論できるはずである.そして,歴史言語学が原因を探ることをやめてしまえば,ただの年表作成に終始してしまうだろうと,反論を繰り広げる.Smith より,2カ所を引用しよう.

. . . it is held here that an adequate history of English must attempt at least to take account of the 'why' as well as the 'how' of the changes the language has undergone; problems of causation must therefore be confronted in any historical account, however provisional the resulting explanations might be. (12)

Although it is not possible, given the limitations of the evidence, to offer absolute proof as to the motivation of a particular linguistic innovation, or to predict the precise development of linguistic phenomena, nevertheless a rationally arguable historical explanation can be offered for the kinds of changes which languages can undergo, and a broad prediction can be made about the kinds of change which are liable to happen. This seems a reasonable goal for any historical enquiry which seeks to go beyond the simple chronicle. (194)

 Smith は,言語変化は言語内的および言語外的な複数の原因(あるいは条件的要素)が複雑に組み合わさって生じるという認識であり,それを積極的に探り,論じるのが歴史言語学者の仕事だと確信している.言語変化の予測 (prediction_of_language_change) にまで踏み込む言及があり,これには異論もあるに違いないが,私は概ね Smith の意見に賛成である.なお,Smith 先生は私の恩師です.
