#5118. Japan-ese の語尾を深掘りする by khelf 新会長 [aokikun][voicy][heldio][khelf][colloquia][link][demonym][suffix][onomastics]

人名 (personal_name),地名,eponym など.
言語権 (linguistic_right) や言語計画 (language_planning) のテーマ.

 細かく挙げていくとキリがなさそうですが,これを機に商標の言語学の存在を念頭に置いていきたいと思います.

#5090. 人名ベースの造語は eponym だが,では地名ベースの造語は何と呼ぶ? [eponym][toponymy][onomastics][personal_name][etymology][metonymy][semantic_change][word_formation][lexicology][terminology]

alsatian: Alsace, France.
balaclava: Balaclava, Crimea.
bikini: Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands.
bourbon: Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Brussels sprouts: Brussels, Belgium.
champagne: Champagne, France.
conga: Congo, Africa.
copper: Cyprus.
currant: Corinth, Greece.
denim: Nîmes, France (originally, serge de Nîm).
dollar: St Joachimsthal, Bohemia (which minted silver coins called joachimstalers, shortened to thalers, hence dollars).
duffle coat: Duffel, Antwerp.
gauze: Gaza, Israel.
gypsy: Egypt.
hamburger: Hamburg, Germany.
jeans: Genoa, Italy.
jersey: Jersey, Channel Islands.
kaolin: Kao-ling, China.
labrador: Labrador, Canada.
lesbian: Lesbos, Aegean island.
marathon: Marathon, Greece.
mayonnaise: Mahó, Minorca.
mazurka: Mazowia, Poland.
muslin: Mosul, Iraq.
pheasant: Phasis, Georgia.
pistol: Pistoia, Italy.
rugby: Rugby (School), UK.
sardine: Sardinia.
sherry: Jerez, Spain.
suede: Sweden.
tangerine: Tangier.
turquoise: Turkey.
tuxedo: Tuxedo Park Country Club, New York.
Venetian blind: Venice, Italy.

 いくらでもリストを長くしていけそうだが,全体として飲食料,衣料,工芸品などのジャンルが多い印象である.

#5089. eponym [eponym][personal_name][onomastics][etymology][metonymy][semantic_change][word_formation][lexicology]

EPONYM [19c: from Greek epṓonumos named on]. (1) A personal name from which a word has been derived: John B. Stetson, the 19c US hatter after whom the stetson hat was named. (2) The person whose name is so used: The Roman emperor Constantine, who gave his name to Constantinople. (3) The word so derived: stetson, Constantinople. The process of eponymy results in many forms: (1) Such simple eponyms as atlas, which became popular after the 16c Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator put the figure of the titan Atlas on the cover of a book of maps. (2) Compounds and attributive constructions such as loganberry after the 19c US lawyer James H. Logan, and Turing machine after the 20c British mathematician Alan Turing. (3) Possessives such as Parkinson's Law after the 20c British economist C. Northcote Parkinson, and the Islets of Langerhans after the 19c German pathologist Paul Langerhans. (4) Derivatives such as Bowdlerize and gardenia, after the 18c English expurgator of Shakespeare, Thomas Bowdler, and the 19c Scottish-American physician Alexander Garden. (5) Clippings, such as dunce from the middle name and the first element of the last name of the learned 13c Scottish friar and theologian John Duns Scotus, whose rivals called him a fool. (6) Blends such as gerrymander, after the US politician Elbridge Gerry (b. 1744), whose redrawn map of the voting districts of Massachusetts in 1812 was said to look like a salamander, and was then declared a gerrymander. The word became a verb soon after. Works on eponymy include: Rosie Boycott's Batty, Bloomers and Boycott: A Little Etymology of Eponymous Words (Hutchinson, 1982) and Cyril L. Beeching's A Dictionary of Eponyms (Oxford University Press, 1988).

TRADEMARK, also trade mark, trade-mark, [16c]. . . . A sign or name that is secured by legal registration or (in some countries) by established use, and serves to distinguish one product from similar brands sold by competitors: for example, the shell logo for Shell, the petroleum company, and the brand name Jacuzzi for one kind of whirlpool bath. Legal injunctions are often sought when companies consider that their sole right to such marks has been infringed; the makers of Coke, Jeep, Jell-O, Kleenex, Scotch Tape, and Xerox have all gone to court in defence of their brand (or proprietary) names . . . . Although companies complain when their trademarks begin to be used as generic terms in the media or elsewhere, their own marketing has often, paradoxically, caused the problem: 'Most marketing people will try hard to get their brand names accepted by the public as a generic. It's the hallmark of success. But then the trademarks people have to defend the brand from becoming a generic saying it is unique and owned by the company' (trademark manager, quoted in Journalist's Week, 7 Dec. 1990).
There is in practice a vague area between generic terms proper, trademarks that have become somewhat generic, and trademarks that are recognized as such. The situation is complicated by different usages in different countries: for example, Monopoly and Thermos are trademarks in the UK but generics in the US. Product wrappers and business documents often indicate that a trademark is registered by adding TM (for 'trademark') or R (for 'registered') in a superscript circle after the term, as with English TodayTM, Sellotape®. The term usually differs from trade name [first used c.1860s] by designating a specific product and not a business, service, or class of goods, articles, or substances: but some trademarks and trade names may happen to be the same. Everyday words of English that were once trademarks (some now universal, some more common in one variety of English than another, some dated, all commonly written without an initial capital) include aspirin, bandaid, cellophane, celluloid, cornflakes, dictaphone, escalator, granola, hoover, kerosene, lanolin, mimeograph, nylon, phonograph, shredded wheat, zipper. Trademarks facing difficulties include Astroturf, Dacron, Formica, Frisbee, Hovercract, Jacuzzi, Laundromat, Mace, Muzak, Q-Tips, Scotch Tape, Styrofoam, Teflon, Vaseline, Xerox. The inclusion of such names in dictionaries, even when marked 'trademark' or 'proprietary term', indicates that their status has begun to shift. Trademark names used as verbs are a further area of difficulty, both generally and in lexicography. One solution adopted by publishers of dictionaries is to regard the verb forms as generic, with a small initial letter: that is, Xerox (noun), but xerox (verb).

 1. Place-names embody important material for the history of England. (例えば,イングランドのスカンディナヴィア系の地名は,スカンディナヴィア系植民地に関する重要な情報を与えてくれる.)
 2. Place names have something to tell us about Anglo-Saxon religion and belief before the conversion to Christianity. (例えば,Wedenesbury という地名は Wōden 信仰についてなにがしかを物語っている.)
 3. Some place-names indicate familiarity with old heroic sagas in various parts of England. (例えば,『ベオウルフ』にちなむ Grendels mere 参照.)
 4. Place-names give important information on antiquities. (例えば,Stratford という地名はローマン・ブリテン時代の道 stræt を表わす.)
 5. Place-names give information on early institutions, social conditions, and the like. (例えば,Kingston という地名は,王領地であったことを示唆する.)
 6. Place-names are of great value for linguistic study.
   (a) They frequently contain personal names, and are therefore a source of first-rate importance for our knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon personal nomenclature. (例えば,Godalming という地名の背後には Godhelm という人名が想定される.)
   (b) Place-names contain many old words not otherwise recorded. They show that Old Englsih preserved several words found in other Germanic languages, but not found in Old English literature. (例えば,Doiley という地名は,古英語では一般的に文証されていない diger "thick" の存在を示唆する.)
   (c) Place-names often afford far earlier references for words than those found in literature. (例えば,dimple という語は OED によると1400年頃に初出するとされるが「くぼ地」を意味する地名要素としては1205年頃に現われる.)
   (d) the value of place-names for the history of English sounds. (例えば,StratfordStretford の母音の違いにより,サクソン系かアングル系かが区別される.)

 英語地名は独立した研究領域を構成しており,なかなか入り込みにくいところがあるが,以上のように英語史にとっても重要な分野であることが分かるだろう.

#4542. 中英語の人名のトレンド [onomastics][personal_name][me][norman_conquest]

 「#4539. アングロサクソン人名の構成要素」 ([2021-09-30-1]) で古英語の人名の傾向をみたので,続いて中英語の人名のトレンドも覗いてみたい (Coates 320--21) .すでに以下の記事などで述べてきたとおりだが,基本的にはノルマン征服を境に,古英語の人名の大多数が受け継がれずに消え,新たにフランス語かぶれの人名が流入し人気を博したといってよい.

 ・ 「#813. 英語の人名の歴史」 ([2011-07-19-1])
 ・ 「#590. last name

Swæf- (Swabian), þēod- (nation)
・ 肉体的・道徳的な「力」に関わるもの: Beald-/-beald (brave), Weald-/-weald (power), Beorht-/-beorht (bright), Æðel- (noble), Cūð- (famous), -mǣr (famous)
・ 戦士の生活に関わるもの: Hild-/-hild (battle), Wīg-/-wīg (battle), -brord (spear), -gār (pear), Beorn- (warrior), Wulf-/-wulf (wolf; warrior), Here-/-here (army), Sige-/-sige (victory), Ēad- (prosperity, treasure); Rǣd-/-rǣd (counsel), Burg-/-burg (pledge), Mund-/-mund (hand; protection), -helm (protection; helmet)
・ 平和に関わるもの: Friðu-/-frið (peace), Lēof- (dear), Wine-/-wine (friend)

The status of proper names
Names is a technical term for a subset of the nominal expressions of a language which are used for referring ('identifying or selecting in context') and, in some cases, for addressing a partner in communication. Nominal expressions are in general headed by nouns. According to one of the most ancient distinctions in linguistics, nouns may be common or proper, which has something to do with whether they denote a class or an individual (e.g. queen vs Victoria), where individual means a single-member set of any sort, not just a person. Much discussion has taken place about how this distinction should be refined to be both accurate and useful, for instance by addressing the obvious difficulty that a typical proper noun denoting persons may denote many separate individuals who bear it, and that common nouns may refer to individuals by being constructed into phrases (the queen). I will leave the concept [賊proper], applied to nouns, for intuitive or educated recognition before returning to discussion of the inclusive concept of proper names directly. Proper nouns have no inherent semantic content, even when they are homonymous with lexical words (Daisy, Wells), and many, perhaps all, cultures recognise nouns whose sole function is to be proper (Sarah, Ipswich). Typically they have a unique intended referent in a context of utterance. Proper names are the class of such proper nouns included in the class of all expressions which have the properties of being devoid of sense and being used with the intention of achieving unique reference in context. Onomastics is the study of proper names, and concentrates on proper nouns; I shall confine the main subject-matter of this chapter to the institutionalised proper nouns associated with English and, in accordance with ordinary usage, I shall call them proper names or just names. Readers should note that strictly speaking these are a subset of proper names, and from time to time other members of the larger set will be discussed. There is some evidence from aphasiology and cognitive neuropsychology that institutionalised proper nouns --- especially personal names --- form a psychologically real class . . . .

#4452. Olivia, Emma, Ava --- 昨今アメリカで人気の女の子の命名ベスト3 [personal_name][onomastics][etymology]

 Top 1,000 Baby Girl Names in the U.S. 2021 によると,新しく生まれた女児につける名前として人気のベスト3は,標題の通り Olivia, Emma, Ava だったという.-a 語尾は伝統的に女性名と関連づけられており納得できるのだが,人名としては4音節となかなか長い Olivia が1位とは驚いた.
ベスト3の名前について,The Wordsworth Dictionary of First Names より記述を引用する.

Olivia (f)
Originally the Italian form of Olive but long considered as a name in its own right with romantic and aristocratic associations. Olivia is one of the heroines in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and in Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield (1766). Olivia Newton-John is an Australian actress-singer.
Familiar form: Livy.

Emma (f)
From Germanic meaning 'whole' or 'universal'. Popular throughout the ages from the 11th century, when Ethelred's Queen bore it, to today when it is often twinned with other names, as in: Emma Jane. Famous bearers include Nelson's mistress, Lady Emma Hamilton and the heroine of Jane Austen's novel Emma (1815).
Familiar forms: Em, Emmie.

Ava (f) [ay-va, ah-va]
In addition to being a familiar form of Gustava, this can be another form of Eva, reflecting the way Eva is pronounced in many European countries. Ava Gardner, film star in the 1940s, popularized the name, though her name tended to be pronounced to rhyme with Java.

[french][loan_word][borrowing][statistics][lexicology][hybrid][personal_name][onomastics][link]

In charting the chronology of the process, we are again at the mercy of the documentary evidence. The key period of lexical transfer appears to be the 14th century; but that may be, as much as anything else, because of the explosion of available documentation in both Anglo-French and, more particularly, Middle English at that time. In other words, the real dates of the transfers may not be the dates at which they are documented. Some evidence that this is not so is available in the form of English surnames, of Anglo-French origin . . . , and indeed in the capacity of some early Middle English texts to generate hybrids from Anglo-French and Middle English (forpreiseð; propreliche; priveiliche from Ancrene Wisse . . .).

Personal names gain advantage by having a certain written bulk since a totem impresses partly by its size. Consequently, names which are phonetically quite short are often padded out with empty letters. The name /leg/ never seems to appear as *Leg --- the usual spelling is Legge. Here we see the two most common types of padding: <C>-doubling and a superfluous <-e> in a context where neither is warranted by modern spelling conventions. Such spellings were common in both names and non-names before conventions settled down in the eighteenth century, but archaism is not the only reason for their continued use in names. Since such spellings are most frequently found in monosyllables and since the unpadded spellings are much less common, their written bulk is obviously seen as an advantage. They also reinforce the initial capital letter as a marker of names and help them to stand out from the non-names in written text. In some cases the padding may help to distance the name from an unfortunate homophone, as in Thynne.

 綴字上の埋め草には,(1) 人名を印象づける,(2) 特に1音節語の人名を際立たせる,(3) 非人名の同音語と区別する,といった機能があるということだ.埋め草の主な方法としては,子音字の2重化と -e の付加が指摘されている.以下に <t> の2重化と <-e> の付加について,埋め草の有無の揺れを示す例をいくつか挙げてみよう (Carney (454--57)) .

Abbot(t), Arnot(t), Barnet(t), Barrat(t), Basset(t), Becket(t), Bennet(t), Calcot(t), Elliot(t), Garnet(t), Garret(t), Nesbit(t), Plunket(t), Prescot(t), Wilmot(t), Wyat(t)

Ann(e), Ask(e), Beck(e), Bewick(e), Brook(e), Cook(e), Crook(e), Cross(e), Dunn(e), Esmond(e), Fagg(e), Fisk(e), Foot(e), Glynn(e), Goff(e), Good(e), Gwynn(e), Harding(e), Hardwick(e), Holbrook(e), Hook(e), Keating(e), Lock(e), Plumb(e), Webb(e), Wolf(e), Wynn(e)

German
   adjective:
      from or connected with Germany
   noun:
1 [countable] a person from Germany
2 [uncountable] the language of Germany, Austria and parts of Switzerland

Germanic
   adjective:
1 connected with or considered typical of Germany or its people
2 connected with the language family that includes German, English, Dutch and Swedish among others

[sobokunagimon][suffix][onomastics][khelf_hel_intro_2021]

#4367. 「英語の人名」の記事セット [personal_name][onomastics][christianity][hellog_entry_set][khelf_hel_intro_2021]

#4348. 人を呼ぶということ [address_term][politeness][pragmatics][historical_pragmatics][anthropology][personal_pronoun][personal_name][onomastics][t/v_distinction][taboo][title][honorific][face]
