#2527. evolution の evolution (1) [evolution][history_of_linguistics][language_change][teleology][language_myth][terminology]

(1) Evolution 1 (McMahon 315)

a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler, or worse condition to a higher, more complex, or better state: progressive development.

(2) Evolution 2 (McMahon 325)

A series of related changes in a certain direction.

(3) Evolution 3 (McMahon 334)

the development of a race, species or other group ...: the process by which through a series of changes or steps any living organism or group of organisms has acquired the morphological and physiological characters which distinguish it: the theory that the various types of animals and plants have their origin in other preexisting types, the distinguishable differences being due to modifications in successive generations.

a. The physical evolution of man.
b. The evolution of language.
c. History.

#2525. 「言語は変化する,ただそれだけ」 [language_change][evolution][teleology][language_myth][unidirectionality][history_of_linguistics]

The modern view, at least of historical linguists if not the general public, is simply that languages change; we may try to describe and explain the processes of change, and we may set up a complementary typology which will include a classification of languages as isolating, agglutinating or inflecting; but this morphological typology has no special status and certainly does not represent an evolutionary scale. In general, we have no right to attack change as decay or to exalt it as progress. It is true . . . that individual changes may aid or impair communication to a limited extent, but there is no justification for seeing change as cumulative progress or decline: modern languages, attested extinct ones, and even reconstructed ones are all at much the same level of structural complexity or communicative efficiency. We cannot argue that some languages, or stages of languages, are better than others . . . .

ここでは,言語変化は全体として特に進歩や堕落というような価値観を伴った一定の方向を目指しているわけではないが,個々の変化については,限られた程度においてコミュニケーションの助けになったり妨げになったりすることもあると述べられている点が注目に値する.これは,「#2513. Samuels の "linguistic evolution"」 ([2016-03-14-1]) で引用した Samuels (1) の "every language is of approximately equal value for the purposes for which it has evolved" の「およそ等価」という表現と呼応しているように思われる.

4. The Importance of a Language. It is natural for people to view their own first language as having intrinsic advantages over languages that are foreign to them. However, a scientific approach to linguistic study combined with a consideration of history reminds us that no language acquires importance because of what are assumed to be purely internal advantages. Languages become important because of events that shape the balance of power among nations. These political, economic, technological, and military events may or may not reflect favorably, in a moral sense, on the peoples and states that are the participants; certainly, different parties to those events will have different interpretations of what is admirable or not. It is clear, however, that the language of a powerful nation will acquire importance as a direct reflection of political, economic, technological, and military strength; so also will the arts and sciences expressed in that language have advantages, including the opportunities for propagation. The spread of arts and sciences through the medium of a particular language in turn reinforces the prestige of that language. Internal deficits such as an inadequate vocabulary for the requirements at hand need not restrict the spread of a language. It is normal for a language to acquire through various means, including borrowing from other languages, the words that it needs. Thus, any language among the 6,000 languages of the world could have attained the position of importance that the half-dozen or so most widely spoken languages have attained if the external conditions had been right. English, French, German, and Spanish are important languages because of the history and influence of their populations in modern times; for this reason, they are widely studied outside the country of their use. Sometimes the cultural importance of a nation has at some former time been so great that its language remains important long after it has ceased to represent political, commercial, or other greatness. Greek, for example, is studied in its classical form because of the great civilization preserved and recorded in its literature, but in its modern form as spoken in Greece today, the Greek language does not serve as a language of wider communication.

 Baugh and Cable (8) にも,同趣旨の議論がある.

[T]he spread of a language---whether reconstructed Indo-European, Latin, French, or English---results from demographic, military, political, and economic forces rather than from any features intrinsic to the language. It is often noted that Latin as the language of an empire was not hindered in its spread by the grammatical declensions of five cases for its nouns or by the complex conjugations of its verbs. The subjunctive mood was irrelevant to the conquest of Gaul.

 「英語は簡単だから世界語となった」というような俗説がいまだに広くはびこっているので,それはまったくの誤解であることを改めて強調しておきたい.拙著『英語史で解きほぐす英語の誤解 --- 納得して英語を学ぶために』第9章「英語は簡単だから世界共通語になった」も参照されたい.

#2458. 施光恒(著)『英語化は愚民化』と土着語化のすゝめ [review][linguistic_imperialism][hel][japanese][language_planning][language_myth][hel_education][elt][bible]

(3) [history][loan_word][lexicology][borrowing][linguistic_imperialism][language_myth][purism]

Far from its conventional image as a language congenial to borrowing from remote languages, English displays a tendency to accept exotic loanwords mainly when they have first been adopted by other European languages or when presented with marginal social practices or trivial objects. Anglophones who have ventured abroad have done so confident of the superiority of their culture and persuaded of their capacity for adaptation, usually without accepting the obligations of adapting. Extensive linguistic borrowing and language mixing arise only when there is some degree of equality between or among languages (and their speakers) in a multilingual setting. For the English abroad, this sense of equality was rare. Whether it is a language more "friendly to change than other languages" has hardly been questioned; those who embrace the language are convinced that English is a capacious, cosmopolitan language superior to all others.

(2) [french][lexicology][loan_word][language_myth][lexical_stratification]

. . . the introduction of French loans for food, such as beef, pork and mutton, is sometimes held to demonstrate a considerable degree of bilingualism. This view owes a great deal to Scott's Ivanhoe, which claims that animals on the hoof were called by their English names, but by French names when cooked. The initial reaction is to believe that; it is only when we recall terms such as English lamb (alongside mutton) or Anglo-Norman cattle alongside English cow that its plausibility diminishes. It is more likely, although less romantically appealing, to suggest that French loans were most probable in administration and learning, and that by and large 'ordinary' words were only borrowed in the few areas where there was constant interaction between English and French speakers. This neither demonstrates extensive bilingualism nor even that there was extensive borrowing beyond a few specific areas.

(1) [writing][medium][language_myth][history_of_linguistics]

There is a more or less generally accepted belief among students of language that writing and phonetic transcription are to be regarded as two ways of recording speech utterances. (86)

しかし,これは誤解である.それを証明すべく,Vachek は音声,綴字読み上げ,文字,音声表記の関係を論理的に整理して示し,説得力のある議論を展開する.". . . writing is by no means the inferior pseudotranscription it has been taken for by the vast majority of scholars." (90) と述べられたあと,論文の後半にかけて,次のような文章が現われる.

Even if writing in the cultural languages of to-day undoubtedly represents a more or less autonomous system (constituting a sign of the first order . . . ), it is a well-known fact that it developed historically from a kind of quasi-transcription and was thus, indeed, originally a sign of the second order. This was regularly the case in the earliest stages of cultural languages, when members of their linguistic communities were trying hard to preserve fleeting spoken utterances by putting them down in writing. Soon, however, such a secondary system of signs became a primary one, i.e. written signs began to be bound directly to the content. (91)

 つまり,歴史的には書き言葉は確かに話し言葉から派生したと考えてよいが,いったん媒介として確立すると,すぐに自立へと歩みだし,共時的には話し言葉と同等の媒介として並び立つに至るという.この議論は,「#1664. CMC (computer-mediated communication)」 ([2013-11-16-1]) に関して Crystal が展開している議論と同じである.
 そして,最後に次のように締めくくられる.

Writing cannot be flatly dismissed as an imperfect, conservative quasi-transcription, as has been done up to the present day. On the contrary, writing is a system in its own right, adapted to fulfil its own specific functions, which are quite different from the functions proper to a phonetic transcription. (93)

 この結論に至る途中の議論が大事なのだが,それについては明日の記事で.

これまでの記事でも示唆してきたように,カナダ英語に迫るのには,言語学的な方法と社会言語学的な方法とがある.言語学的な考察の中心になるのは,カナダ英語を特徴づけるカナダ語法 (Canadianism) の同定だろう.Brinton and Fee (434) は,"Canadianisms" の定義として "words which are native to Canada or words which have meanings native to Canada" を掲げており,この定義に適う語彙を pp. 434--38 で数多く列挙している.
 一方,社会言語学的な方法を採るならば,カナダ英語の母語話者の帰属意識や忠誠心という問題に言い及ばざるをえない.Bailey (160) は,カナダ英語という変種を支える3つの政治的前提に触れている.

. . . "Loyalists" in the Commonwealth; "North Americans" by geography; "nationalists" by virtue of separatism and independent growth. Each political assumption and linguistic hypothesis has adherents, but the facts of Canadian English resist unambiguous classification.

 個々の話者によって,3つの前提のいずれを取るのか,あるいは複数の前提をどのような配合で混在させているのかは異なっているのが普通だろう.このような話者集合体の話す変種こそがカナダ英語なのだという,そのようなアプローチも可能である.むしろ,言語変種とは,往々にしてそのように成立していくものなのかもしれないとも思う.

#2266. 間投詞 eh? は Canadianism か? [interjection][canadian_english][language_myth][french]

. . . it should seem quite obvious that eh? is no Canadianism---for it did not originate in Canada and is not peculiar to the English spoken in Canada. Indeed, eh? appears to be in general use wherever English speakers hang their hats; and in one form or another it has been in general use for centuries. On the other hand, there can be no doubt that eh? has a remarkably high incidence in the conversation of many Canadians these days. Moreover, it seems certain that in Canada eh? has been pressed into service in contexts where it would be unfamiliar elsewhere. Finally, it would appear that eh? has gained such recognition among Canadians that it is used consciously and frequently by newspapermen and others in informal articles and reports . . . and attributed freely in reported conversations with all manner of men, including athletes, professors, and politicians. (Avis 95)

Although eh? is no Canadianism, there can be little doubt that the interjection is well entrenched. . . . [M]any Canadians are aware of its current high frequency (especially in its narrative function), a fact which leads some to claim it as a Canadianism, others to use it intentionally in print, and, it must be added, some to treat it as a pernicious carbuncle. (Avis 103)

Eh? is a common contour-carrier among French Canadians (along with eh bien and hein?), as it has been in the French language for centuries. This circumstance may have contributed to the high popularity of the interjection in Canada generally. (Avis 102--03fn)

The history of Canadian settlement is immensely significant in determining the origins of English in Canada. Only by romanticizing history are present-day Canadians able to trace their linguistic ancestry to the "United Empire Loyalists," but they are not alone in creating a history to support national sensibilities. In the United States, for instance, some anglophones like to imagine a direct connection with Plymouth Colony (if they are Yankees) or with the First Families of Virginia (if they admire the antebellum South). But a history that is partly fictional may nonetheless be socially significant, and national myths can bolster notions of linguistic prestige and thus influence the course of language change in progress. Hence accounts of settlement history must combine the facts of migration with the beliefs that combine with them to create present-day norms of language behavior.

 Bailey によれば,例えばカナダ英語という変種は,それを話す話者集団が,自分たちの歴史と言語とを結びつけることによって生み出すフィクションである.しかし,そのフィクションはやがて自らが威信や規範を生み出し,それ自身が話者集団に働きかけ,その変種の言語変化の進路に影響を与える.これは,神話や宗教の形成にも類する過程のように思われる.「#415. All linguistic varieties are fictions」 ([2010-06-16-1]) で論じたように,変種とはフィクションにすぎない.しかし,フィクションだからこそ,話者集団にとって強力な神話ともなりうるし,その言語変化の経路をも決定する重要な要因になりうるのだろう.

#2194. フランス語規範主義,英語敵視,国民的フランス語 [french][prescriptive_grammar][standardisation][academy][linguistic_imperialism][language_planning][language_myth][world_englishes]

The Arte of English Poesie (1589) は,ロンドンの宮廷で話される英語を標準語として推奨し,それ以外の方言は避けるべきであるとしている.

neither shall he take termes of Northernmen, such as they vse in dayly talke, whether they be noble men or gentlemen, or of their best clerkes all is a matter: nor in effect any speach vsed beyond the river of Trent, though no man can deny but that theirs is the purer English Saxon at this day, yet it is not so Courtly nor yet so currant as our Southerne English is, no more is the far Westerne mans speach: ye shall therfore take the vsuall speach of the Court, and that of London and the shires lying about London within lx myles, and not much above. (cited in Upton and Widdowson 6)

#2005. 話者不在の言語(変化)論への警鐘 [sociolinguistics][language_change][causation][language_death][language_myth]

When we deal with linguistic data as aggregate data, detached from the speakers and instances of speaking, we often anthropomorphize languages as the principal actors of the sociolinguistic drama. This leads to forceful and often powerfully suggestive generalizations cast in agentivizing metaphors: "languages that are flexible and can adapt may survive longer", or "the more powerful language drives out the weaker". If we rephrase findings in terms of what people are doing --- how they are speaking and what they are accomplishing or trying to accomplish when they are speaking that way . . . --- we may find ourselves open to new insights about why such linguistic phenomena occur. (359)

There is a wealth of evidence . . . that is suggestive of a causal relation, or at least a correlation, between language maintenance and linguistic convergence. In this most tentative of attempts to account for the intriguing constellations we find of linguistic conservatism and language death or linguistic adaptation and language maintenance, I have suggested we best begin by anchoring our generalizations in speakers' activities. Human actors rather than personified languages are the active agents in the processes we wish to explain . . . . (365)

(3) [singular_they][prescriptive_grammar][gender][number][personal_pronoun][language_myth]

 一昨日 ([2014-07-30-1]) ,昨日 ([2014-07-31-1]) と続いての話題.口語において中英語期より普通に用いられてきた不定一般人称に対する singular they は,18世紀の規範文法の隆盛に従って,公に非難されるようになった.しかし,すでに早く16世紀より,性を問わない he の用法を妥当とする考え方は芽生えていた.Bodine (134) によると,T. Wilson は1553年の Arte of rhetorique で男性形を優勢とする見解を明示している.

Some will set the Carte before the horse, as thus. My mother and my father are both at home, even as thoughe the good man of the house ware no breaches, or that the graye Mare were the better Horse. And what thoughe it often so happeneth (God wotte the more pitte) yet in speaking at the leaste, let us kepe a natural order, and set the man before the woman for maners Sake. (1560 ed.: 189)

 同様に,Bodine (134) によると,7世紀には J. Pool が English accidence (1646: 21) で同様の見解を示している.

The Relative agrees with the Antecedent in gender, number, and person. . . The Relative shall agree in gender with the Antecedent of the more worthy gender: as, the King and the Queen whom I honor. The Masculine gender is more worthy than the Feminine.

 しかし,Bodine (135) は,不定一般人称の he の本格的な擁護の事例として最初期のものは Kirby の A new English grammar (1746) であると見ている.Kirby は88の統語規則を規範として掲げたが,その Rule 21 が問題の箇所である.

The masculine Person answers to the general Name, which comprehends both Male and Female; as Any Person, who knows what he says. (117)

Thus, the 1850 Act of Parliament and Kirby's Rules 21-2 manifest their underlying androcentric values and world-view in two ways. First, linguistically analogous phenomena (number and gender) are handled very differently (singular or plural as generic vs. masculine only as generic). Second, the precept just being established is itself violated in not allowing singular 'they', since if the plural 'shall be deemed and taken' to include the singular, then surely 'they' includes 'she' and 'he' and 'she or he'.

 これは,昨日の記事 ([2014-07-31-1]) で取り上げた議論にも通じる.不定一般人称の he の用法とは,近代という時代によって作られ,守られてきた一種の神話であるといってもよいかもしれない.

#1871. 言語と人種 [race][language_myth][indo-european][comparative_linguistics][evolution][origin_of_language][ethnic_group]

a bevy of quails, a cluster of stars, a covey of partridges, a crowd of people, a drove of oxen, a flight of birds, a flock of sheep, a gang of robbers, a group of islands, a herd of deer, a horde of savages, a pack of wolves, a pride of lions, a school of whales, a shoal of fish, a swarm of bees, a throng of ants, a troop of children

Ogden and Richards の semiotic triangle」 ([2014-03-01-1]) で,Ogden and Richards の有名な図を示した.彼らによれば,SYMBOL と REFERENT をつなぐ底辺が間接的なつながり(点線)しかないにもかかわらず,世の中では多くの場合,直接的なつながり(実線)があるかのように誤解されている点が問題であるということだった ("The fundamental and most prolific fallacy is . . . that the base of the triangle given above is filled in" (15)) .これを正したいとの著者の思いは "missionary fervor" (Eco vii) とでも言うべきほどのもので,第1章の直前には,この思いを共有する先人たちからの引用が多く掲げられている.

"All life comes back to the question of our speech---the medium through which we communicate." ---HENRY JAMES.
"Error is never so difficult to be destroyed as when it has its root in Language." ---BENTHAM.
"We have to make use of language, which is made up necessarily of preconceived ideas. Such ideas unconsciously held are the most dangerous of all." ---POINCARÉ.
"By the grammatical structure of a group of languages everything runs smoothly for one kind of philosophical system, whereas the way is as it were barred for certain other possibilities." ---NIETZCHE.
"An Englishman, a Frenchman, a German, and an Italian cannot by any means bring themselves to think quite alike, at least on subjects that involve any depth of sentiment: they have not the verbal means." ---Prof. J. S. MACKENZIE.
"In Primitive Thought the name and object named are associated in such wise that the one is regarded as a part of the other. The imperfect separation of words from things characterizes Greek speculation in general." ---HERBERT SPENCER.
"The tendency has always been strong to believe that whatever receives a name must be an entity or being, having an independent existence of its own: and if no real entity answering to the name could be found, men did not for that reason suppose that none existed, but imagined that it was something peculiarly abstruse and mysterious, too high to be an object of sense." ---J. S. MILL.
"Nothing is more usual than for philosophers to encroach on the province of grammarians, and to engage in disputes of words, while they imagine they are handling controversies of the deepest importance and concern." ---HUME.
"Men content themselves with the same words as other people use, as if the very sound necessarily carried the same meaning." ---LOCKE.
"A verbal discussion may be important or unimportant, but it is at least desirable to know that it is verbal.." ---Sir G. CORNEWALL LEWIS.
"Scientific controversies constantly resolve themselves into differences about the meaning of words." ---Prof. A. Schuster.

 いくつかの引用で示唆される通り,Ogden and Richards が取り除こうと腐心しているこの誤解は,サピア=ウォーフの仮説 (sapir-whorf_hypothesis) や言語相対論 (linguistic_relativism) の問題にも関わってくる.実際に読んでみると,The Meaning of Meaning は多くの問題の種を方々にまき散らしているのがわかり,その意味で "a seminal work" と呼んでしかるべき著書といえるだろう.

#1769. Ogden and Richards の semiotic triangle [semantics][semiotics][sign][basic_english][language_myth]

標題は,Ogden and Richards による記号論・意味論の古典的名著 The Meaning of Meaning で広く知られるようになった,以下の図のことを指す.

Semiotic Triangle

 この図のもつ最大の意義は,SYMBOL と REFERENT の間には,すなわち語と事物の間には,本質的な関係はなく,間接的な関係しかないことを明示していることである.ここに直接の関係があるかのように誤解されていることこそが,適切な思考と言語の使用にとって諸悪の根源であると,著者は力説する.この主張は,著書のなかで何度となく繰り返される.
 SYMBOL, REFERENCE, REFERENT の3者の関係について,やや長い引用となるが,著者に直接説明してもらおう (10--12) .

This may be simply illustrated by a diagram, in which the three factors involved whenever any statement is made, or understood, are placed at the corners of the triangle, the relations which hold between them being represented by the sides. The point just made can be restated by saying that in this respect the base of the triangle is quite different in composition from either of the other sides.
Between a thought and a symbol causal relations hold. When we speak, the symbolism we employ is caused partly by the reference we are making and partly by social and psychological factors---the purpose for which we are making the reference, the proposed effect of our symbols on other persons, and our own attitude. When we hear what is said, the symbols both cause us to perform an act of reference and to assume an attitude which will, according to circumstances, be more or less similar to the act and the attitude of the speaker.
Between the Thought and the Referent there is also a relation; more or less direct (as when we think about or attend to a coloured surface we see), or indirect (as when we 'think of' or 'refer to' Napoleon), in which case there may be a very long chain of sign-situations intervening between the act and its referent: word---historian---contemporary record---eye-witness---referent (Napoleon).
Between the symbol and the referent there is no relevant relation other than the indirect one, which consists in its being used by someone to stand for a referent. Symbol and Referent, that is to say, are not connected directly (and when, for grammatical reasons, we imply such a relation, it will merely be an imputed, as opposed to a real, relation) but only indirectly round the two sides of the triangle.
It may appear unnecessary to insist that there is no direct connection between say 'dog,' the word, and certain common objects in our streets, and that the only connection which holds is that which consists in our using the word when we refer to the animal. We shall find, however, that the kind of simplification typified by this once universal theory of direct meaning relations between words and things is the source of almost all the difficulties which thought encounters.

Ogden and Richards がこの本を著した目的,そしてこの semiotic triangle を提示するに至った理由は,世の中の言説にはびこっている記号と意味に関する誤解を正すという点にあった.SYMBOL, REFERENCE, REFERENT の3者の間にある関係が世の中に正しく理解されていないという思い,それによって数々の言葉のミスコミュニケーションが生じているということへの焦燥感が,著者を突き動かしていた.その意味では,The Meaning of Meaning は,実践的治療を目的とした書,前置きで Umberto Eco も評している通り,"therapeutic" な書であると言える ("The Meaning of Meaning is pervaded by an abundant missionary fervor. I will call this attitude, with a certain severity, the 'therapeutic fallacy'." (vii)) .著者らが後に Basic English の創作を思いついたのも,このような "therapeutic" な意図をもっていたからにほかならない(Basic English については,「#960. Basic English」 ([2011-12-13-1]) 及び「#1705. Basic English で書かれたお話し」 ([2013-12-27-1]) を参照).
今となっては,semiotic triangle は記号と意味の理論として基本的な部類に属するが,この理論が力説されるに至った経緯には,Ogden and Richards の言語使用に関わる実際的な問題意識があったのである.
