I don't know who came.
 Heine and Kuteva (95)

a. Basque on the model of Spanish, Gascon, and French . . . .
b. Balkan Turkish on the model of Balkanic languages . . . .
c. the North Arawak language Tariana of northwestern Brazil on the model of Portuguese . . . .
d. the Aztecan language Pipil of El Salvador on the model of Spanish . . . .

#5064. notwithstanding [preposition][participle][grammaticalisation][conjunction][adverb][loan_translation][french][latin]

Notwithstanding some members' objections, I think we must go ahead with the plan.
・ Notwithstanding his love of luxury, his house was simple inside.
・ They started notwithstanding the bad weather.
・ His relations with colleagues, differences of opinion notwithstanding, were unfailingly friendly.
・ Injuries notwithstanding, he won the semi-final match.
・ She is an intolerable person, her excellent work notwithstanding.

Notwithstanding, the problem is a significant one. I went notwithstanding (that) he told me not to.

・ c1400 Bk. to Mother (Bodl.) 113 (MED) And ȝut notwiþstondinge al þis..religiouse men and wommen trauelen..to make hem semliche to cursed proude folk.
・ 1490 W. Caxton tr. Eneydos vi. 23 This notwystondyng, alwaye they be in awayte.
・ c1425 J. Lydgate Troyyes Bk. (Augustus A.iv) iv. 5474 Not-wiþstondynge þat he trouþe ment, ȝit for a worde he to exile went.
・ ?a1425 tr. Catherine of Siena Orcherd of Syon (Harl.) (1966) 22 (MED) Which synne worþily askide and disceruede a peyne þat schulde haue noon eende, notwiþstondynge þe deede of synne had eende.
・ 1425 Rolls of Parl. IV. 274/1 Which proves notwithstondyng, yat hie and myghti Prince my Lord of Glouc'..and your oyer Lordes..will not take upon hem declaration for my said place.

 OED によると,because, adv., conj., n.

2. With the purpose that, to the end that, in order that, so that, that. Obsolete. (Common dialect.)
1485 W. Caxton tr. Paris & Vienne (1957) 31 Tolde to hys fader..by cause he shold..doo that, whyche he wold requyre hym.
1526 Bible (Tyndale) Matt. xii. f. xvv They axed hym..because [other versions 'that'] they myght acuse him.
1628 R. Burton Anat. Melancholy (ed. 3) iii. ii. iii. 482 Annointing the doores and hinges with oile, because they shall not creake.
1656 H. More Antidote Atheism (1712) ii. ix. 67 The reason why Birds are Oviparous is because there might be more plenty of them.

#5057. because の語源と歴史的な用法 [conjunction][etymology][french][loan_word][phrase][hybrid][expletive][infinitive][syntax]

because を分解すると by + cause となる.
Bi cause whi (= "because why")

c1305 Deo Gratias 37 in Early Eng. Poems & Lives Saints (1862) 125 Þou hast herd al my deuyse, Bi cause whi, hit is clerkes wise.

 ・ c1405 (c1395) G. Chaucer Franklin's Tale (Hengwrt) (2003) l. 253 By cause that he was hir neghebour.
・ 1611 Bible (King James) John vii. 39 The Holy Ghost was not yet giuen; because that Iesus was not yet glorified.
・ 1822 Ld. Byron Heaven & Earth i. iii, in Liberal 1 190 I abhor death, because that thou must die.

1356 J. Wyclif Last Age Ch. (1840) 31 Þe synnes bi cause of whiche suche persecucioun schal be in Goddis Chirche.

1523 Ld. Berners tr. J. Froissart Cronycles I. ccxxxix. 346 Bycause to gyue ensample to his subgettes..he caused the..erle of Auser to be putte in prison.
・ 1546 T. Langley tr. P. Vergil Abridgem. Notable Worke i. xv. 28 a Arithmetike was imagyned by the Phenicians, because to vtter theyr Merchaundyse.

 (1) She is a linguist, but she is quite intelligent.
 (2) She is a linguist, and she is quite intelligent.

他に手続き的情報をもつ語句としては,so, therefore, nevertheless, after all などの談話標識 (discourse_marker) や,oh, well などの間投詞 (interjection) が挙げられる.

とりわけ pp. 409--10 では,"perfectly established" したものとして allowing for, talking of, speaking of, judging by, judging from, saving, begging your pardon, strictly speaking, generally speaking, counting, taking, considering の例が挙げられている.

22.29. A loose participle sometimes approaches the value of a preposition. This use is with possibly doubtful justice ascribed to French influence by Ross, The Absolute Participle, 30. Examples: Ch B 4161 as touching daun Catoun | More U 64 Now as touchyng this question . . . But as concernyng this matter . . . | Caxton R 11 touchyng this complaint | Hawthorne S 247 I am utterly bewildered as touching the purport of your words | Caxton R 54 alle were there sauyng reynard | Gay BP 40 . . . a Jew; and bating their religion, to women they are a good sort of people | Hawthorne Sn 51 barring the casualties to which such a complicated piece of mechanism is liable | Quincey 116 one may bevouack decently, barring rain and wind, up to the end of October | Scott I 31 incapable of being removed, excepting by the use of the file | Di Do 239 Edith, saving for a curl of her lip, was motionless | Dreiser F 292 what chance would he have, presuming her faithfulness itself | Defoe R 2.190 his discourse was prettily deliver'd, considering his youth | Hope D 77 Considering his age, your conduct is scandalous | Thack N 5 there may be nothing new under and including the sun.
Cf. also regarding, respecting (e.g. Ruskin S 1.291) | according to (Caxton R 57, etc.) | owing to | granting (Stevenson JHF 103 even granting some impediments, why was this gentleman to be received by me in secret?).
   Cf. pending, during, notwithstanding 6.34.
On the transition of seeing, granting, supposing, notwithstanding with or without that to use as conjunctions, see ch. XXI; on being see above 6.35.

#4584. or が表わす3種の意味 [pragmatics][semantics][speech_act][cognitive_linguistics][performative_hypothesis][conjunction][conceptual_metaphor][punctuation]

 (1) Every Sunday, John eats pancakes or fried eggs.
 (2) John will be home for Christmas, or I'm much mistaken in his character.
 (3) Have an apple turnover, or would you like a strawberry tart?

#4575. and が表わす3種の意味 [pragmatics][semantics][speech_act][cognitive_linguistics][performative_hypothesis][conjunction][conceptual_metaphor][iconicity][punctuation]

(1a) John eats apples and pears.
(1b) John took off his shoes and jumped in the pool.
 (2) Why don't you want me to take basketweaving again this quarter?
Answer: Well, Mary got an MA in basketweaving, and she joined a religious cult. (...so you might go the same way if you take basketweaving).
 (3) Thank you, Mr Lloyd, and please just close the door as you go out.

#4569. because が表わす3種の理由 [pragmatics][semantics][speech_act][cognitive_linguistics][performative_hypothesis][conjunction][conceptual_metaphor]

 (1) John came back because he loved her.
 (2) John loved her, because he came back.
 (3) What are you doing tonight, because there's a good movie on.

I conclude that John loved her, because he came back."
I am asking you what you are doing tonight, because there's a good movie on."

They were all dressed as clowns.
I respect him as a doctor.
・ You're as tall as your father.
・ As she grew older, she gained in confidence.
・ Leave the papers as they are.
・ As you were out, I left a message.
・ Happy as they were, there was something missing.
・ I have never heard such stories as he tells.

詳しくは「#693. as, so, also」 ([2011-03-21-1]) をご覧ください.

#3517. if を使わずに V + S とする条件節 [syntax][word_order][conjunction][construction_grammar][conditional][subjunctive][inversion]

Were I to take over my father's business, I would make a drastic reform.
・ Had World War II ended two years earlier, how many lives would have been saved!
・ Should anything happen to him, call me at once.

Fulga nu se mete ðære wambe willan, & sio wamb ðæs metes, ðonne towyrpð God ægðer. (YCOE: Cura Pastoralis, late 9th cent.)
"If the food now follow.SUBJ the will of the belly and the belly that of the food, God annihilates both."
・ Do þu hit eanes awei; ne schalt tu neauer nan oðer swuch acourin. (PPCME2: Hali Meidhad, c. 1225)
"If you get rid of it once, you will never (re)gain anything like it."
・ Deceyueth me the foxe / so haue I ylle lerned my casus (PPCME2: Caxton's History of Reynard the Fox, 1481)
"If the fox deceives me, I have learned my lesson badly."

A condition is very often denoted by a clause without any conjunction, but containing a verb placed before its subject. This construction, which is found in all the Gothonic language, is often explained from a question with implied positive answer: Will you come? [Yes, then] we can start at once.---A clear instance of this is AV 1. Cor. 7.27 Art thou bound vnto a wife? seeke not to bee loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seeke not a wife.

But interrogative sentences, though undoubtedly explaining much, are not the only sources of our construction. #3005. or の語源 [etymology][conjunction][analogy]

古英語では類義で oþþe, oþþa が用いられており,その起源は *ef þau (if or) の短縮形と考えられている(Old Saxon に eftho が文証される).
現代英語の相関表現 (either) A or B は,古くは other A other Bother A or B とも言われ,さらに or A or B へと発展した.
もう1つの比較級接尾辞 -ther」 ([2012-07-02-1]),「#1107. farther and further」 ([2012-05-08-1]) で触れたように,either, neither, whether, after, nether, bresbyter, further などと同じ接尾辞に由来する.

#2702. Jane does nothing but watch TV.watch [infinitive][preposition][conjunction][contamination][syntax]

Jane does nothing but watch TV.He does something more than just put things together.
They made her pay for the damage. や The crow saw Gray score two magnificent goals. What the plan does is ensure a fair pension for all. や Turn off the tap was all I did. I had said he would come down and come down he did. She did everything but make her bed. (Quirk et al. §15.15; Biber et al. §11.2.2.3) .
(I would rather [sooner] die than disgrace myself. I intend to build the boat as well as plan it.
He does everything in the house but [except] putting the children to bed. Nothing remains but to die. や I have no choice [alternative] but to agree.

8. Used (like French que) as a substitute instead of repeating a previous conjunction, or conjunctive adverb or phrase. Now rare or arch."

c1175 Lamb. Hom. 17 Þenne were þu wel his freond..Gif þu hine iseȝe þet he wulle asottie to þes deofles hond..þet þu hine lettest, and wiðstewest.

MED でも that (conj.) Used as substitute for a conj. or conjunctive phrase in preceding subordinate clause such as if, though, whanne, etc.; -- freq. with and or or" と説明がある.

・ (c1380) Chaucer CT.SN. (Manly-Rickert) G.314: Men sholde hym brennen in a fyr so reed If he were founde or that men myghte him spye.
・ c1450(c1380) Chaucer HF (Benson-Robinson) 1099: Appollo..make hyt sumwhat agreable, Though som vers fayle in a sillable, And that I do no diligence To shewe craft.

1535 Bible (Coverdale) Esther ii. C, She must come vnto the kynge nomore, excepte it pleased the kynge, and that he caused her to be called by name.
・ 1600 Shakespeare Merchant of Venice iv. i. 8 Since he stands obdurate, And that no lawfull meanes can carry me out of his enuies reach. [Also 27 other examples.]
・ 1611 Bible (King James) 1 Chron. xiii. 2 If it seeme good vnto you, and that it be of the Lord our God, let vs send abroad vnto our brethren. [ Coverd. Yf..yf...]

具体的には,after that, as that, because that, by that, ere that, for that, forto that, if that, lest that, now that, only that, though that, till that, until that, when that, where that, whether that, while that 等々である.
ここでは例を挙げることはせず,The Canterbury TalesThe General Prologue の冒頭の1行 "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote" に触れておくにとどめたい.
. . Loke þu him bowe and love" (Good Wife 23, cited from Mustanoja 193) や "Euery wyght wheche þat to rome wente." (Chaucer Troilus & Criseyde ii. Prol.

And thei herynge these thingis, wenten awei oon aftir anothir, and thei bigunnen fro the eldre men; and Jhesus dwelte aloone, and the womman stondynge in the myddil. (Wyclif, John 8, 9, circa 1380)
・ For we have dwelt ay with hir still And was neuer fro hir day nor nyght. Hir kepars haue we bene And sho ay in oure sight. (York Plays, 120, circa 1459)
・ & ȝif it is founde þat he be of good name & able þat þe companye may be worscheped by him, he schal be resceyued, & elles nouȝht; & he to make an oþ with his gode wil to fulfille þe poyntes in þe paper, þer whiles god ȝiueþ hym grace of estat & of power (Book of London English, 54, 1389)
. . and presently fixing mine eyes vpon a Gentleman-like object, I looked on him, as if I would suruay something through him, and make him my perspectiue: and hee much musing at my gazing, and I much gazing at his musing, at las he crost the way . . . (All the Workes of John Taylor the Water Poet, 1630)
. . and I say, of seventy or eighty Carps, [I] only found five or six in the said pond, and those very sick and lean, and . . . (The Compleat Angler, 1653--1676)
・ Which would be hard on us, and me a widow. (Mar. Edgeworth, Absentee, xi, 1812) (←

The infinitival type, which at least in its non-exclamatory use is closer to coordination than the other types, may well derive from the Latin accusative with the infinitive . . . But the non-infinitival constructions (and the exclamatory infinitival patterns), although they too are often considered to have their origins in the Latin absolute constructions, could also stem from another source, viz. Celtic languages. Whereas the Latin models typically lack the overt subordinator, subordinating and-structures closely equivalent to the ones met in Middle English and Early Modern English are a well-attested feature of the neighbouring Celtic languages from their earliest stages on.

#2128. "than" としての noror [conjunction]

nor=than これは今日では方言以外には用いられないが,方言としては英米に通じて存するのみならず,古くは北部イギリスの文語に用いられ,James I の著書などにも出るものとして記憶されたい。たとえば,
It makes a man feel as (=that) there's a good more nor he can see.---Eliot.
   You're no better nor a common tramper.---Thackeray.

1478 R. Cely Let. 10 Oct. in Cely Lett. (1975) 32 In my consayt better unsolde nor solde.
・ 1573 J. Tyrie Refut. Ansuer Knox f. 4v, He apperis mair wicked, nor Sathan him self.
1746 T. Sheridan Brave Irishman ii. 20 I'm sure 'tis better nor your Garlick nor Ingyons in France.
・ 1792 R. Burns Poems & Songs (1968) II. 606 Ye'll crack your credit wi' mae nor me.
・ 1840 Thackeray Catherine iv, You're no better nor a common tramper.

ただし,この 接続詞 ornor の「肯定形」としての or ではなく,語源的には接続詞 ere と関連づけられるものである.OED の or, adv.1, prep., and conj.2 の接続詞としての語義3に,やはり "Sc. and Eng. regional (north.)"

& Exod. (1968) l. 1510 And hauen mete ðan at is mel More or Ðe gungere twinne del.
・ c1400 (?c1390) Sir Gawain & Green Knight (1940) 1543 (MED), To yow þat..weldez more slyȝt Of þat art..or a hundreth of seche As I am.

MEDer (conj.(1)) Also ar, or, 3er, 3or では "?a1400(a1338) Mannyng Chron.Pt.1 (Petyt 511) 10148: Cador & hyse..to þe hauen wel raþer cam Er any Saxon to schipe nam."
. ." が "rather than . . ." Don't drink more pints of beer than you can help. (1)」 ([2012-01-09-1]),「#988. Don't drink more pints of beer than you can help.

#1843. conservative radicalism [language_change][personal_pronoun][contact][homonymic_clash][homonymy][conjunction][demonstrative][me_dialect][wave_theory][systemic_regulation][causation][functionalism][she]

The issue with ambiguity between the third person singular and plural forms was also sorted through the borrowing of Northern usage, although on this occasion through what had been an actual Norse borrowing (although it would be very unlikely that southern speakers would have been aware of the new form's provenance --- if they cared): they. Interestingly, the subject form came south earlier than the oblique them and possessive their. Chaucer, for instance, uses the first but not the other two, where he retains native <h> forms. This type of usage represents what I have termed conservative radicalism (Millar 2000; in particular pp. 63--4). Northern forms are employed to sort out issues in more prestigious dialects, but only in 'small homeopathic doses'. The problem (if that is the right word) is that the injection of linguistically radical material into a more conservative framework tends to encourage more radical importations. Thus them and their(s) entered written London dialect (and therefore Standard English) in the generation after Chaucer's death, possibly because hem was too close to him and hare to her. If the 'northern' forms had not been available, everyone would probably have 'soldiered on', however.
Moreover, the borrowing of they meant that the descendant of Old English þeah 'although' was often its homophone. Since both of these are function words, native speakers must have felt uncomfortable with using both, meaning that the northern (in origin Norse) conjunction though was brought into southern systems. This borrowing led to a further ambiguity, since the plural of that in southern England was tho, which was now often homophonous with though. A new plural --- those --- was therefore created. Samuels (1989a) demonstrates these problems can be traced back to northern England and were spread by 'capillary motion' to more southern areas. These changes are part of a much larger set, all of which suggest that northern influence, particularly at a subconscious or covert level, was always present on the edges of more southerly dialects and may have assumed a role as a 'fix' to sort out ambiguity created by change.

#1712. as regards [preposition][conjunction][impersonal_verb][corpus][clmet]

典型的には "As regards the result, you need not worry so much."
によると,語義 8b にこの用法が記述されており,初例としては1797年の "A distinction is made, as regards moral rectitude, in the minds of many individuals."

b. as regards, as regarded (now rare), †as regarding: with respect or reference to

も同様に用いられるが,こちらの初例としては1779年から " The servant was called, and examined regarding the import of the answer he had brought from Madame la Comtesse."
The Corpus of Late Modern English Texts, version 3.0 (CLMET3.0) により,as regards を検索してみた(as regarding は2例ほどヒット).70年間ごとに区切った頻度をまとめると以下のようになった.

DecadeFrequencyCorpus size
1710--17805 (5)10,480,431 words
1780--185070 (18)11,285,587
1850--1920347 (6)12,620,207

. . という形で現れている(上の表でかっこ内に示した頻度は,(in) so [as] far as regards . . . の形で現れる内数)."so far as regards the present subject", "as far as regards your knowledge", "so far as regards our present purpose" の如くである.
