What emerges from this survey is the unsurprising conclusion that aspects of linguistic structure that are most salient to the language user---the most accessible to conscious control: words, syllables, discourse, emphasis---are the most likely to be taken into account in their orthographies. Other features have emerged more or less incidentally over the centuries, and have either been incorporated into common usage or have dropped out of fashion. Needed is investigation of the origin and persistence of all these features in all the world's orthographies (vs the prevailing concentration on the evolution of the shapes of characters and beyond the recent attention to the acquisition of orthographies). It may show that imposition of script reform outside the context of adoption or adaptation of a script to a new language is an otiose and even futile exercise. The twin examples of Sassanian conservatism and Turkish innovation reveal that only in extraordinary circumstances can either of these extremes succeed. In every case, a writing system must be understood through the pens of those who write it.

Standardizing approaches, such as New Spelling . . . , uses familiar letters more regularly (typically, by adding new digraphs . . .); no new symbols are invented.
・ Augmenting approaches, such as Phonotypy . . . add new symbols; diacritics and invented letters have both been used.
・ Supplanting approaches replace all TO letters by new symbols, as in Shavian . . . .
・ Regularizing approaches apply existing rules more consistently or focus on restricted areas of the writing system, as in Noah Webster's changes to US English . . . or those approaches which drop silent or redundant letters, such as Cut Spelling . . . .

穏健路線から急進路線への順に並べ替えれば Regularizing, Standardizing, Augmenting, Supplanting となるだろう.これまで本格的に成功した綴字改革はなく,せいぜい限定的に痕跡を残した Hart や Webster の名前が挙がるくらいである.そして,限定的に成功した改革提案は常に穏健なものだった.英語史において綴字改革はそれほど難しいものだったのであり,今後もそうあり続ける可能性が高い.

#4735. なぜ Webster は綴字改革をなし得たか? [webster][spelling_reform][sociolinguistics][linguistic_ideology][ame][spelling][orthography][american_revolution]

Webster was an ardent nationalist who had an intuitive understanding of the symbolic significance of the written language as a national emblem. Like many of his contemporaries in England and in the colonies, Webster promoted a reformed mode of spelling; however, what distinguished him from others is that he realised the political significance of claiming an independent standard for American English. Spelling to him was a way to write history. Webster's various publications on the English language were intended to further America's intellectual independence and to prove political nationalism with a manifest appearance for all to see and identify with. 'As an independent nation, our honor requires us to have a system of our own, language as well as government' (Webster 1789: 20).
Reducing the number of letters, weeding out silent letters, and making the spelling more regular were general principles of reform in line with the Enlightenment's call for more rationality. While Webster subscribed to these ideals, to him the 'greatest argument', as Mencken put it, 'was the patriotic one: "A capital advantage of his reform in these States would be that it would make a difference between the English orthography and the American"' (quoted from Mencken 1945 [1919]: 382). Regulating spelling conventions since the Renaissance had been intended to advance homogeneity, but Webster's new spelling was, on the contrary, designed to bring about a schism. Reversing the printers' plea for as wide a distribution of print products as possible, he argued that 'the English would never copy our orthography for their own use' and that the alteration would thus 'render it necessary that all books should be printed in America' (Mencken 1945 [1919]: 382). The assumed economic advantages of a simpler spelling system that would accrue from savings in the cost of teaching as well as publishing books at home rather than buying them from England were an important part of his reasoning.
Self-interest and nationalism thus prevailed over rationalism. Webster's new spelling could succeed because it was supported by a strong political ideology, because it was not so sweeping as to burn all the bridges and make literature in the conventional orthography unintelligible, and because the population concerned was favourably disposed to novelty and not strongly tied to a literary tradition, hailing to a large part from less-educated strata of society. If any generalisation can be drawn from this example, it would seem to be that in spelling reforms ideological motives are more important than correcting system-intrinsic flaws of the extant norm, although it is usually properties of this kind --- irregularity, redundancy, polyvalence --- that are first put forth by reform proponents.

The first concerted movement for the reform of English spelling gathered pace in the second half of the sixteenth century and continued into the seventeenth as part of a great debate about how to cope with the flood of technical and scholarly terms coming into the language as loans from Latin, Greek and French. It was a succession of educationalists and early phoneticians, including William Mulcaster, John Hart, William Bullokar and Alexander Gil, that helped to bring about the consensus that took the form of our traditional orthography. They are generally known as 'orthoepists'; their work has been reviewed and interpreted by Dobson (1968). Standardization was only indirectly the work of printers.

 この点について Carney は,基本的に Brengelman の1980年の重要な論文に依拠しているといってよい.Brengelman の論文については,以下の記事でも触れてきたので,合わせて読んでいただきたい.

#4173. Palsgrave のフランス語文典 [french][orthoepy][gvs][spelling_pronunciation_gap][spelling_reform][oed][emode]

[webster][ame][spelling_reform][spelling][standardisation][prescriptivism][language_change]

Most obvious is the appearance of both -or and -our through the century, but gradual change can be detected from the -our extreme in 1740 to the -or extreme in 1840. Only small and sporadic change occurred around the time of Webster's strongest influence, which suggests that if he did contribute to the dropping of -u, his contribution was slow to take effect.
A key year appears to be 1830 --- after the appearance of Worcester's dictionary and the public attention, during the previous decade, to Webster's and Worcester's battle of dictionaries and spellers. . . .
On the whole, then, the American usage chart shows a slow but steady movement toward the -or spelling. No doubt the movement spilled at least into the first quarter of the twentieth century, when sporadic cases of -our were still to be seen. Aided by later dictionaries, which have looked to usage or other American authorities, the shift to -or is now virtually complete.

 この調査報告を読むと,Webster (および彼と辞書編纂で争った Worcester)の当該語の綴字への影響は1830年以降に少し感じられはするが,決定的な影響というほどではなかったという.しかも -our から -or へのシフトの完成は,それから優に数十年も待たなければならなかったのである.Webster の役割は,せいぜいシフトの触媒としての役割にとどまっていたといえそうだ.
 この事例研究から,Anson (48) は言語変化の標準化と規範化の関係に関する次の一般論を導き出そうとしている.

. . . usage and authority work mutually and each tends to influence the other and be influenced by it. A highly respected dictionary may influence the way an educated public spells debated words; on the other hand, no authority --- even Webster --- can hope to change a firmly entrenched spelling habit among the general public. The chances are good that, had the public not been moving steadily toward -or forms, we might still be spelling in favor of -our, despite Webster. While Webster may have served as a catalyst for some spelling changes, he was not, for spelling reform, the cause celebre many have assumed. Most of his reforms never caught on. Curiously, spelling reform on a large scale, like Esperanto and other synthetic languages, has never appealed to the public as have changes introduced organically and from within. Proponents of spelling reform argue quite convincingly that their proposals meet a real public need for simplicity, precision, and uniformity; yet often the public allows linguistic changes that work in just the opposite direction. Usage, then, is a highly resistant strain when it comes to 'curing the ills' of the language, and it ultimately determines its own future.

#3209. 言語標準化の7つの側面 [standardisation][sociolinguistics][terminology][language_planning][reestablishment_of_english][spelling_reform][genbunicchi]

#3087. Noah Webster [biography][webster][ame][spelling_reform][american_revolution][history][lexicography][dictionary]

A Grammatical Institute of the English Language
A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language を著わし,1807年に A Philosophical and Practical Grammar of the English Language
An American Dictionary of the English Language

It is difficult to believe that Gardiner was threatened by sounds and the study of pronunciation. What did present a threat, and a serious one, was the precise study of texts. This point had been understood by the Lollard translators. The Bible was at this time increasingly proclaimed by reformers as the ultimate authority, and, the more scholarly and accurate the written text, the more effectively it could be used to challenge the traditional oral authority of the church.
Gardiner was extremely conservative not only in language but also in politics and religion. When, after 1553, Queen Mary sought to return the English church to Rome, Gardiner was her lord chancellor; and in this capacity he played a role in the burning of heretics, and one of his potential victims --- had he not recanted --- was Sir John Cheke. After Gardiner's death in 1555, Cheke published the correspondence between himself and Gardiner under the title Disputationes de pronuntiatione graecae linguae. What is important and perhaps surprising in this story is that the study of pronunciation could be regarded as a political issue.

Noah Webster [spelling_reform][spelling_pronunciation_gap][webster][franklin][ame][orthography]

昨日の記事「#2904. 英語史における Benjamin Franklin の役割」 ([2017-04-09-1]) に引き続き,Benjamin Franklin の話題.Franklin が綴字改革運動に関連して Noah Webster に影響を及ぼした旨にを述べたが,これについては Baugh and Cable (359--60) の記述が優れている.

Spelling reform was one of the innumerable things that Franklin took an interest in. In 1768, he devised A Scheme for a New Alphabet and a Reformed Mode of Spelling and went so far as to have a special font of type cut for the purpose of putting it into effect. Years later, he tried to interest Webster in his plan but without success. According to the latter, "Dr. Franklin never pretended to be a man of erudition---he was self-educated; and he wished to reform the orthography of our language, by introducing new characters. He invited me to Philadelphia to aid in the work; but I differed from him in opinion. I think the introduction of new characters neither practicable, necessary nor expedient." Indeed, Webster was not in the beginning sympathetic to spelling reform. . . . But, by 1789, Franklin's influence had begun to have its effect. In the Dissertations on the English Language, published in that year, Webster admitted: "I once believed that a reformation of our orthography would be unnecessary and impracticable. This opinion was hasty; being the result of a slight examination of the subject. I now believe with Dr. Franklin that such a reformation is practicable and highly necessary."

A Scheme for a New Alphabet and a Reformed Mode of Spelling
Lindley Murray, English Grammar」 ([2016-06-01-1])).ここにも Franklin から流れる系譜があったのだ(渡部,pp. 491--92).
ちなみに,若い頃の Franklin は文法,修辞学,論理学を独習するのに James Greenwood の An Essay Towards a Practical English Grammar, Describing the Genius and Nature of the English Tongue. Giving Rational and Plain Account of GRAMMAR in General, with a familiar Explanation of its Terms (1711) を用いていたことが,自伝に書かれている(同文法書の1753年版はこちら).そのほか,Franklin は,上記と同年に出版されている John Brightland の A Grammar of the English Tongue, with Notes, Giving the Grounds and Reason of Grammar in General. To which is added, A New Prosodia; Or, The Art of English Numbers. All adapted to the Use of Gentlemen and Ladies, as well as of the Schools of Great Britain

Etymological relicts like these have a further function in making visible the linguistic richness of the language and its varied history, thereby maintaining a closer relationship with texts of the past. While silent letters like those in knight are unhelpful for modern learners of English, they do enable us to retain a link with the language used by Chaucer, and before him by the Anglo-Saxons. When English speakers turn to Chaucer they may find much unfamiliar, but they will not be thrown by the line 'A knyght ther was, and that a worthy man' thanks to our preservation of the medieval spelling. Historical spellings like this preserve that link with the past, as well as standing as a monument to the language's history.
The English language has come into contact with numerous other languages throughout its history, all of which have left their mark, to a greater or lesser degree, on the language's structure, spelling, and vocabulary. To remove the idiosyncrasies that they have contributed to our spelling system would be to erase the evidence of that history. Our spelling system could be likened to a cathedral church, whose origins lie in the Anglo-Saxon period, but whose structure now includes a Gothic portico added in the Middle Ages, a domed tower added in the Early Modern period, and a gift shop and café introduced in the 1960s. The end result is an awkward mixture of architectural styles which no longer reflects the builders' original plan, nor is it the ideal building for the bishop and his clergy to carry out their diocesan duties. But, in spite of these practical limitations, it would be hard to imagine anyone suggesting that the cathedral be demolished to allow the rebuilding of a more functional and architecturally harmonious modern construction. Quite apart from the practical and financial costs of such a project, the demolition and reconstruction of the cathedral would erase the rich historical record that such a building represents. (Horobin 249)

Finally, there seems to me another reason for resisting any attempts to reform English spelling, and retaining traditional spellings, silent letters and all: such spellings are a testimony to the richness of our language and its history. This argument is harder to defend as it has no practical purpose, although it does help to maintain a connection between our present-day language and that of the past. Modern English speakers would surely find it more difficult to read the works of Chaucer and Shakespeare if our spelling system was to be radically reformed. Silent letters are silent witnesses to pronunciations that have since been lost, but which continue to be preserved in a spelling system that boasts a long and rich heritage. (Horobin 251--52)

[spelling][orthography][prescriptive_grammar][language_myth][spelling_reform]

 現代英語について,標準的な正書法にこだわる人々は多い.英語綴字の歴史を著わし,本ブログでたびたび取り上げてきた Horobin は,このように綴字に対する保守的な態度が蔓延している現状について論じている.だが,標題に挙げたように,そもそもなぜそのような人々は正しい綴字にこだわるのだろうか.この問題に関する Horobin の見解が凝縮されているのが,次の箇所である (pp. 228--29) .

Why is correct spelling so important? Throughout this book I have tried to show that standard English spelling comprises a variety of different forms that have developed in an erratic and inconsistent manner over a substantial period of time. We must therefore discard any attempt to impose a teleological narrative upon the development of English spelling which would argue that our standard spelling system is the result of a kind of Darwinian survival of the fittest, producing a system that has been refined over centuries. We have also seen that the concept of a standard spelling system is a relatively modern one; earlier periods in the history of English were able to manage without a rigidly imposed standard perfectly well. What is more, informal writing, as in the letters and diaries of earlier periods, has often allowed more relaxed rules for spelling and punctuation. So why should it be different for us? I suspect that one reason is that spelling is the area of language use that is easiest to regulate and monitor, and thus the area where users come under the strongest pressure to conform to a standard. Older generations of spellers have considerable personal investment in maintaining these standards, given that they themselves were compelled to learn them. As David Mitchell confesses in his Soapbox rant against poor spellers, 'I'm certainly happy to admit that I do have a huge vested interest in upholding these rules because I did take the trouble to learn them and, having put that effort in, I am abundantly incentivized to make sure that everyone else follows suit. The very last thing I want is for us to return to a society where some other arbitrary code is taken as the measure of a man, like how many press-ups you can do or what's the largest mammal you can kill'. But is correct spelling more than simply a way of providing puny men with a means of asserting themselves over their physically more developed peers?

In many ways Hart's is a sensible, if slightly over-idealized, view of the spelling system. Some of the reforms introduced by him have in fact been adopted. Before Hart the letter <j> was not a separate letter in its own right; in origin it is simply a variant form of the Roman letter <I>. In Middle English it was used exclusively as a variant of the letter <i> where instances appear written together, as in lijf 'life', and is common in Roman numerals, such as iiij for the number 4. . . . Hart advocated using the letter <j> as a separate consonant to represent the sound /dʒ/, as we still do today. A similar situation surrounds the letters <u> and <v>, which have their origins in the single Roman letter <V>. In the Middle English period they were positional variants, so that <v> appeared at the beginning of words and <u> in the middle of words, irrespective of whether they represented the vowel or consonant sound. Thus we find Middle English spellings like vntil, very, loue, and much. Hart's innovation was to make <u> the vowel and <v> the consonant, so that their appearance was dependent upon use, rather than position in the word.

 現代の正書法につらなる2対の文字素の分化について,Hart のみの貢献と断じるわけにはいかない.しかし,彼のラディカルな提案のすべてが水泡に帰したわけではなかったということは銘記してよい.

#2404. <nacio(u)n> → <nation> の綴字変化 (2) [etymological_respelling][spelling][spelling_reform][consonant][latin][emode]

. . . a number of graphemic substitutions, introduced mostly between the times of Chaucer and Shakespeare, must be treated separately. One of these is the substitution of t for c in suffixes like tion and tial, e.g., nation, essential (cf. ME, nacion, essenciall). Early Modern English scribes, instilled with the fervor of classical learning, brought about in these substitutions one of the few true spelling reforms in English orthographic history.

#2378. 先行する長母音を表わす <e> の先駆け (2) [final_e][grapheme][spelling][orthography][emode][printing][mulcaster][spelling_reform][diacritical_mark]

 昨日に引き続いての話題.Caon (297) によれば,先行する長母音を表わす <e> を最初に提案したのは,昨日述べたように,16世紀後半以降の Mulcaster や同時代の綴字改革者であると信じられてきたが,Salmon を参照した Caon (297) によれば,実はそれよりも半世紀ほど遡る16世紀前半に John Rastell なる人物によって提案されていたという.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries linguists and spelling reformers attempted to set down rules for the use of final -e. Richard Mulcaster is believed to have been the one who first formulated the modern rule for the use of the ending. In The First Part of the Elementarie (1582) he proposed to add final -e in certain environments, that is, after -ld; -nd; -st; -ss; -ff; voiced -c, and -g, and also in words where it signalled a long stem vowel (Scragg 1974:79--80, Brengelman 1980:348). His proposals were reanalysed later and in the eighteenth century only the latter function was standardised (see Modern English hop--hope; bit--bite). However. according to Salmon (1989:294). Mulcaster was not the first one to recommend such a use of final -e; in fact, the sixteenth-century printer John Rastell (c. 1475--1536) had already suggested it in The Boke of the New Cardys (1530). In this book of which only some fragments have survived, Rastell formulated several rules for the correct spelling of English words, recommending the use of final -e to 'prolong' the sound of the preceding vowel.

早速 Salmon の論文を入手して読んでみた.John Rastell (c. 1475--1536) は,法律印刷家,劇作家,劇場建築者,辞書編纂者,音楽印刷家,海外植民地の推進者などを兼ねた多才な人物だったようで,読み書き教育や正書法にも関心を寄せていたという.問題の小冊子は The boke of the new cardys wh<ich> pleyeng at cards one may lerne to know hys lett<ers,> spel [etc.]
[A]nother proposal which was taken up by his successors was the employment of final <e> (Chapter viii) to 'perform' or 'prolong' the sound of the preceding vowel, a device with which Mulcaster is usually credited (cf. Scragg 1974: 79)."
