(2) [pragmatic_marker][pragmatics][historical_pragmatics][politeness][syntax][impersonal_verb][reanalysis][adverb]

d. orig. Sc. In imperative or optative use: 'may it (or let it) please you', used chiefly to introduce a respectful request. Formerly with bare infinitive, that-clause, or and followed by imperative. Now only with to-infinitive (chiefly regional).

Examples with bare infinitive complement are now usually analysed as please adv. followed by an imperative. This change probably dates from the development of the adverb, which may stand at the beginning of a clause modifying a main verb in the imperative.

1543 in A. I. Cameron Sc. Corr. Mary of Lorraine (1927) 8 Mademe..pleis wit I have spokin with my lord governour.
1568 D. Lindsay Satyre (Bannatyne) 3615 in Wks. (1931) II. 331 Schir pleis ȝe that we twa invaid thame And ȝe sell se vs sone degraid thame.
1617 in L. B. Taylor Aberdeen Council Lett. (1942) I. 144 Pleis ressave the contract.
1667 Milton Paradise Lost v. 397 Heav'nly stranger, please to taste These bounties which our Nourisher,..To us for food and for delight hath caus'd The Earth to yeild.
1688 J. Bloome Let. 7 Mar. in R. Law Eng. in W. Afr. (2001) II. 149 Please to procure mee weights, scales, blow panns and sifters.
1716 J. Steuart Let.-bk. (1915) 36 Please and forward the inclosed for Hamburg.
1757 W. Provoost Let. 25 Aug. in Beekman Mercantile Papers (1956) II. 659 Please to send me the following things Vizt. 1 Dozen of Black mitts. 1 piece of Black Durant fine.
1798 T. Holcroft Inquisitor iv. viii. 49 Please, Sir, to read, and be convinced.
1805 E. Cavanagh Let. 20 Aug. in M. Wilmot & C. Wilmot Russ. Jrnls. (1934) ii. 183 Will you plaise to tell them down below that I never makes free with any Body.
1871 B. Jowett tr. Plato Dialogues I. 88 Please then to take my place.
1926 N.E.D. at Way sb.1 There lies your way, please to go away.
1973 Punch 3 Oct. Please to shut up!
1997 P. Melville Ventriloquist's Tale (1998) ii. 140 Please to keep quiet and mime the songs, chile.

(1) [pragmatic_marker][pragmatics][historical_pragmatics][politeness][syntax][comment_clause][impersonal_verb][reanalysis][adverb]

As a request for the attention or indulgence of the hearer, probably originally short for please you (your honour, etc.) (see please v. 3b(b)), but subsequently understood as short for if you please (see please v. 6c). As a request for action, in immediate proximity to a verb in the imperative, probably shortened from the imperative or optative please followed by the to-infinitive (see please v. 6d).

1771 P. Davies Let. 26 Sept. in F. Mason John Norton & Sons (1968) 192 Please send the inclosed to the Port office.

例えば,ほぼ同じ使い方で if it please you (cf. F s'il vous plaît), may it please you, so please you, please to, please it you, please you などがあった.

May the Force be with you! May the Queen live long!

a. Shall 「未来」 + Will 「意志」
whase wilenn shall þiss boc efft oþerr sitþe written
'whoever shall wish to write this book afterwards another time' (?c1200 Orm D. 95)
b. Shall 「未来」 + Can 「能力」
   I shal not konne answere.
   'I shall not be able to answer.' (c1386 Chaucer, C. T. B 2902)
c. Shall 「未来」 + May 「能力」
Hu sal ani man ðe mugen deren?
'How shall any man be able to injure thee?' (c1250 Gen & Ex 1818)
d. May 「可能性」 + Can 「能力」
it may not kon worche þis work bot ȝif it be illuminid by grace
'it may not be able to do this work unless it be illumined by grace' (?a1400 Cloud 116, 14)

[ type A ]

In came Chomsky.
Down with the rebound comes . . .
・ Beyond it rose the peopled hills.
・ Developing offshore drilling in California are two Texas oil men.

[ type B ]

・ Rarely did I hear such overtones of gratitude as went into the utterance of this compound noun.
・ Not until the Book of Splendour did appear in Spain in the thirteenth century did a formidable metaphysical text on cabalism appear.
・ Often did she visit the inhabitants of that gloomy village
・ Only of late have I learned about the complexities of subjectivity
・ Never did I hear about cabalism.

Prior to the central structural process, the grammaticalisation of SVO, inversion (or not) did have non-propositional meaning, which is best described as 'textual' or discourse meaning, but no affective meaning. . . After the dissolution of the Old English types of inversions, the late Middle English situation shows an incipient tendency for use as a focussing device. The modern developments include the rise of the B type (the emotional type), expressive and subjective in meaning, as well as the rise of the A type, with a discourse-cum-affective type of meaning. The latter type is in part a renaissance of a discourse meaning that was present in the Old English (VSO) pattern, which did not have the affective component. To that extent the development has gone full circle.

#3519. ???????????????????????????? [optative][interrogative][exclamation][tag_question][syntax][word_order][construction_grammar][inversion]

Sh Merch II. 2. 106 Lord, how art thou chang'd
・ Sh Merch II. 3.16 Alacke, what heinous sinne is it in me To be ashamed to be my Fathers childe
BJo 3.133 what a vile wretch was I
・ Farquhar B 321 What a rogue is my father!
・ Defoe G 44 what fool must he be now that they have given him a place!
・ Goldsm 658 What a fool was I, to think a young man could learn modesty by travelling
・ Macaulay H 2.209 What a generation of vipers do we live among!
・ Thack N 180 What a festival is that day to her | What (how great) was my surprise when they were engaged!
Bennett C 2.12 What a night, isn't it?

"The war may come", says one party. "Yes", says the other; and secretly mutters, "May the war come!"

He asked if I liked Chinese food. (彼は私に中華料理が好きかと尋ねた」や Let me know if she is coming 「彼女が来るか知らせてください」など.
(non)assertion については,「#679. assertion and nonassertion (1)」 ([2011-03-07-1]),「#680. assertion and nonassertion (2)」 ([2011-03-08-1]),「#950. Be it never so humble, there's no place like home.

#3517. if を使わずに V + S とする条件節 [syntax][word_order][conjunction][construction_grammar][conditional][subjunctive][inversion]

Were I to take over my father's business, I would make a drastic reform.
・ Had World War II ended two years earlier, how many lives would have been saved!
・ Should anything happen to him, call me at once.

Fulga nu se mete ðære wambe willan, & sio wamb ðæs metes, ðonne towyrpð God ægðer. (YCOE: Cura Pastoralis, late 9th cent.)
"If the food now follow.SUBJ the will of the belly and the belly that of the food, God annihilates both."
・ Do þu hit eanes awei; ne schalt tu neauer nan oðer swuch acourin. (PPCME2: Hali Meidhad, c. 1225)
"If you get rid of it once, you will never (re)gain anything like it."
・ Deceyueth me the foxe / so haue I ylle lerned my casus (PPCME2: Caxton's History of Reynard the Fox, 1481)
"If the fox deceives me, I have learned my lesson badly."

A condition is very often denoted by a clause without any conjunction, but containing a verb placed before its subject. This construction, which is found in all the Gothonic language, is often explained from a question with implied positive answer: Will you come? [Yes, then] we can start at once.---A clear instance of this is AV 1. Cor. 7.27 Art thou bound vnto a wife? seeke not to bee loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seeke not a wife.

But interrogative sentences, though undoubtedly explaining much, are not the only sources of our construction. Pretty frequently we find a subjunctive used in such a way that it cannot have arisen from a question, but must be due to a main sentence expressing a desire, permission, or the like: AR 164 uor beo hit enes tobroken, ibet ne bið hit neuer | Towneley 171 Gett I those land lepars, I breke ilka bone | Sh Merch III. 2.61 Liue thou, I liue with much more dismay | Cymb IV. 3.30 come more, for more you're ready | John III. 3.31 and creep the time nere so slow, Yet it shall come, for me to doe these good.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done.---Matthew, vi. 10.
God bless and reward you for all your kindness.---Stowe.
   God forgive me!---Miss Mulock.
   Long live the Duke!---Charles Reade.
Mine be a cot beside the hill!---Rogers.
So be it, O Queen!---H. Hoggard.
   So help me God!---Hardy.
   Murrain take thee!---Scott.
   Devil take me!---Lamb.
   Generosity be hanged!---Thackeray.
   Dauphin be damned!---Shaw.
May no evil dream disturb my rest!---Evening Hymn.
   May he rest in peace!---Irving.
So may it be for ages!---William Morris.

NICE features [auxiliary_verb][preterite-present_verb][syntax]

be, do, have などの1次助動詞はもとより may, must, can, will, shall, ought (to), need, dare, used to などの法助動詞も含めたすべての助動詞には,共通する4つの統語・形態・音韻的特徴がある.

N direct Negation (should > shouldn't)
I Inversion in questions (I will > Will I?)
C Code or reduced forms (I may go > so may you, i.e. without repeating the main verb go)
E Emphatic affirmation (Must we run? Yes, we múst)

1931 R. L. Binyon, Prayer (Coll. Poems 1931), O might my love that in one heart has found such hope to cherish . . . O might it grow Till in this clear profound Part of thy peace were seen (Kr).

#3423. 祈願の might (1) [syntax][word_order][auxiliary_verb][optative][oed][may]

24. Used (since Middle English with inversion of verb and subject) in exclamatory expressions of wish (sometimes when the realization of the wish is thought hardly possible). poet. Perhaps Obsolete.
This appears to have developed from the hypothetical use (sense 20a).

c1325 (?c1225) King Horn (Harl.) (1901) 166 (MED) Crist him myhte blesse.
c1450 (?a1400) Wars Alexander (Ashm.) 1607 (MED) Ay moȝt [a1500 Trin. Dub. mot] he lefe, ay moȝt he lefe, þe lege Emperoure!
1600 Shakespeare Merchant of Venice ii. ii. 88 Lord worshipt might he be, what a beard hast thou got.
1720 Pope tr. Homer Iliad VI. xxiv. 261 Oh!..might I..these Barbarities repay!
1852 M. Arnold To Marguerite in Empedocles 97 Now round us spreads the watery plain---Oh might our marges meet again!

 「#1867. May the Queen live long! (I wish that S may V のような構文)からの発達に求めることができる.

b. In clauses depending on such verbs as beseech, desire, demand, hope, wish, and their allied nouns. . . .

1984 Guardian 27 Jan. 26 They found a shovel raising hopes that the lost men may have dug themselves into a snow hole.

May the Queen live long!

12. Used (with inversion of verb and subject) in exclamatory expressions of wish (synonymous with the simple present subjunctive, which (exc. poet. and rhetorically) it has superseded).
This use developed from sense 9b, as is shown by early examples, such as quot. 1521, in which the subject precedes may, and antecedent formulae (e.g. quot. 1501) which have a that-clause.

Let my Sons attend, Attend may they という部分で勧告の let と祈願の may が言い換えのように並置されているのが示唆的である.「#2478.

#3416. 祈願の may と勧告の let の意味論的類似性 [pragmatics][semantics][syntax][word_order][speech_act][auxiliary_verb][optative][may]

[Optative may C]onstruction . . . , which belongs to somewhat formal style, has may in pre-subject position, meaning approximately "I hope/pray". There is some semantic resemblance between this specialised use of may and that of let in open let-imperatives, but syntactically the NP following may is clearly subject . . . . The construction has the same internal form as a closed interrogative, but has no uninverted counterpart.

(3) [syntax][auxiliary_verb][inversion][word_order][optative][subjunctive][imperative][may]

11.2.3.4 Special cases of inversion in independent clauses
Some uses of inversion are highly restricted and usually confined to more or less fixed collocations. Types A and B described below are remnants of earlier uses and carry archaic literary overtones.

A Formulaic clauses with subjunctive verb forms
The combination of the inflectionless subjunctive and inversion gives the highlighted expressions below an archaic and solemn ring:
Be it proclaimed in all the schools Plato was right! (FICT)
If you want to throw your life away, so be it, it is your life, not mine. (FICT)
"I, Charles Seymour, do swear that I will be faithful, and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors according to law, so help me God." (FICT)
      Long Live King Edmund! (FICT)
Suffice it to say that the DTI was the supervising authority for such fringe banks. (NEWS)

B Clauses opening with the auxiliary may
The auxiliary may is used in a similar manner to express a strong wish. This represents a more productive pattern:
May it be pointed out that the teacher should always try to extend the girls helping them to achieve more and more. (FICT†)
May God forgive you your blasphemy, Pilot. Yes. May he forgive you and open your eyes. (FICT†)
The XJS may be an ageing leviathan but it is still a unique car. Long may it be so! (NEWS)
      Long May She Reign! (NEWS)

C Imperative clauses
Imperative clauses may contain an expressed subject following don't . . . .

(2) [syntax][auxiliary_verb][inversion][word_order][optative][may]

UNTRIGGEREDTRIGGERED
obligatoryoptional
Closed interrogativesOpen interrogativesExclamatives
Conditional inversionInitial negativeOther fronted elements
Optative mayInitial only
Initial so/such

May the Queen live long!

(1) [syntax][auxiliary_verb][inversion][word_order][exclamation][optative][may]

(Closed interrogatives)
   - Can she speak French?
   - Does she speak French?

(Open interrogatives)
   - What did she tell you?
   - Where did you go after that?
   - What is she doing?

   - What a fool have I been?
   - How hard did she try?

(Initial negative)
   - Not one of them did he find useful.
   - Nowhere does he mention my book.

(Initial only)
   - Only two of them did he find useful.
   - Only once had she complained.

(Initial so/such)
   - So little time did we have that we had to cut corners.
   - Such a fuss would he make that we'd all agree.
   - You got it wrong and so did I.

(Other fronted elements)
   - Thus had they parted the previous evening.
   - Many another poem could I speak of which sang itself into my heart.
   - The more wives he had, the more children could he beget.
   - Well did I remember the crisis of emotion into which he was plunged that night.

(Conditional inversion)
   - Had he seen the incident he'd have reported it to the police.

 (9) 祈願の may (Optative may)
   - May you both enjoy the long and happy retirement that you so richly deserve.
   - May the best man win!
   - May you be forgiven!

Money makes the mare to go」 ([2011-12-23-1]) で見たように,使役構文においては能動文では原形不定詞を用いるが,受動文では to 不定詞を用いるといったチグハグな統語現象が見られる.

you ought not walk (Cæsar, I. i. 3)/you were wont be civil (Othello, II. iii.
I command her come to me/entreat her hear me but a word/let one be sent to pray Achilles see us
It makes my heart to groan Money makes the mare to go I helped him (to) find his things.
    and would no more endure
This wooden slavery than to suffer
The flesh-fly blow my mouth. (Tempest, III. i. 61--63)

#3324. 言語変化は霧のなかを這うようにして進んでいく [language_change][syntax][teleology][invisible_hand][lexical_diffusion]

Syntactic change typically creeps into a language via optional stylistic variants. Particular lexical items provide a toehold. The change tends to become widely used via ambiguous structures. One or some of these get increasingly preferred, and in the long run the dispreferred options fade away through disuse. Mostly, speakers are unaware that such changes are taking place. Overall, all changes, whether phonetic/phonological, morphological, or syntactic, take place gradually, and also spread gradually. There is always fluctuation between the old and the new. Then the changes tend to move onward and outward, becoming the norm among one group of speakers before moving on to the next.

[S]peakers in the process of using --- and thus of changing --- their language often act as if they were in a fog, by which is meant not that they are befuddled but that they see clearly only immediately around them, so to speak, and only in a clouded manner farther afield. They thus generalize only 'locally' . . . and not globally over vast expanses of data, and they exercise their linguistic insights only through a small 'window of opportunity' over a necessarily small range of data.

#3306. we two, you three などの所有格 [genitive][inflection][numeral][syntax][personal_pronoun]

例えば,Shakespeare では your three motiues, your two helpes, their two estates, our two histories などがみられる.
. .both your . . .
