#4987. 英語の感嘆符の使いすぎ批判は19世紀から [exclamation_mark][punctuation][complaint_tradition]

No other punctuation mark has attracted such criticism in modern times as the exclamation mark. The antagonism isn't restricted to pedantic stylists. Some very well-known authors have taken against them. Mark Twain opens his essay 'How to Tell a Story' (1897) by warning comic writers against the depressing habit of shouting at the reader, including the use of 'whooping exclamation-points', which, he says, makes him 'want to renounce joking and lead a better life'. And there's a much-quoted remark attributed to F Scott Fitzgerald: 'Cut out all these exclamation points', adding 'An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.' Repeated marks attract particular criticism. One of the characters in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Eric (1990) insists that 'Multiple exclamation marks are a sure sign of a diseased mind.'
The antipathy seems to have set in during the late nineteenth century, as part of a general feeling that writers, editors, and printers had rather overdone their preference for heavy punctuation. We see exclamation marks littering the pages in editions of Shakespeare, for instance. Take this line from Romeo and Juliet when the Nurse tries to wake Juliet (4.5.12). Modern editions (such as Arden, Oxford, Penguin) print it thus:

What, dressed, and in your clothes, and down again?

The Albion edition of the plays (1889) prints it thus:

What, dress'd! and in your clothes! and down again!

 感嘆符は,読み手としては目に付いてうるさく感じるのだが,書き手の立場になると容易に使ってしまう.感嘆符は書き手に過剰使用を促すような性質をもっているのだろうか.

#4811. なぜどうでもよいほど小さな語法が問題となるのか? [complaint_tradition][sociolinguistics][linguistic_ideology][prescriptive_grammar][prescriptivism][language_myth]

Horobin は著書の最終章 "Why Do We Care?" にて,この「文化」の背景を探っている.論点はいくつかあるが,大きく3点あるように読める.

(1) 英語話者は,自身が英語の不条理と長年付き合ってきた結果,英語を使いこなせるに至ったという経験をもつため,いまさら語法の正用・誤用について中立的な視点をもつことができない.Horobin (153) の言葉を引けば,次の通り.

. . . as users of English, it is impossible for us to take an external stance from which to observe current usage. As we have all had to acquire the English language, negotiating its grammatical niceties, its fiendishly tricky spellings, and its unusual pronunciations, it is impossible for us to adopt a neutral position from which to observe debates concerning correct usage.

 単純化していってしまえば「私はこんなにヘンテコな語法ばかりの英語を頑張って習得してきた.だから,他の皆にも同じ苦労を味わってもらわなければ不公平だ」という気持ちに近い.

(2) 語法に関する本,「良い文法」に関する本は市場価値があり,よく売れる.現代はあらゆるものの変化が早く,言葉に関して頼りになる不変の支柱があれば,人々は安心するものである.Horobin (155) 曰く,

Much of the success of style guides may be credited to society's tacit acceptance that there are rights and wrongs in all aspects of usage, and a desire to be saved from embarrassment. Rather than question the grounds for the prescription, we turn to usage pundits as we once turned to our schoolteachers, in search of guidance and certitude. In a fast-changing and uncertain world, there is something reassuring about knowing that the values of our schooldays continue to be upheld, and that the correct placement of an apostrophe still matters.

(3) ラテン語文法への信奉.ラテン語は屈折の豊富な「立派な」言語であり,文法も綴字も約2千年のあいだ不変だった.それに対して,英語は屈折を失った「堕落した」言語であり,文法も綴字もカオスである.英語もラテン語のような不変で盤石の言語的基盤をもつべきである,という言語観.Horobin (162--63) の解説を引こう.

Since Latin had not been a living language (one with native speakers) for centuries, it existed in a fixed form; by contrast, English was unstable and in decline. This view of Latin as a unified and fixed entity perseveres today, encouraged by the way modern textbooks present a single variety (usually that of Cicero), suppressing the wide variation attested in original Latin writings. Since the eighteenth century, efforts to outlaw variation and to introduce greater fixity in English have been driven by a desire to emulate the model of this prestigious classical forebear.

 3点目については,言語変化を「堕落」と捉える見方と関連する.これについては「#432. 言語変化に対する三つの考え方」 ([2010-07-03-1]),「#2543. 言語変化に対する三つの考え方 (2)」 ([2016-04-13-1]),「#2544. 言語変化に対する三つの考え方 (3)」 ([2016-04-14-1]) を参照.「英語に関する不平不満の伝統」を支える言語観は,18世紀の規範主義の時代から,ほとんど変わっていないようだ.

#4596. 「英語に関する不平不満の伝統」の歴史的変化 [complaint_tradition][sociolinguistics][linguistic_ideology]

It is worth noting at the start of this account that the phrase "the complaint tradition" is slightly misleading. What it suggests is a continuing practice which, although it differs over time, is recognisably the same by dint of a common set of features. That is to say, a legacy which is more or less passed down over a prolonged period in which certain characteristics and themes recur. In one limited sense this is an accurate description of a practice which does indeed reach far back into the history of the English language; yet in another sense the conception of a "complaint tradition" is far too abstract and non-specific for analytical purposes. For while it is undoubtedly a matter of interest that people have consistently sought to complain about English since it became a language which was considered to be worthy of comment at all, what the general phrase "the complaint tradition" obscures is that fact that what precisely people were complaining about --- and why --- has varied historically. If the same complaints had been made about the English language throughout its history, it would perhaps be an interesting phenomenon but one which might be easily explained. As will be seen, however, complaints about English have been radically different at distinct points in the history of the language, and it is this which makes the "complaint tradition" both fascinating and complicated. The complaints themselves have ranged all the way from accusations that the English language was not "copious" enough for the purposes of various forms of written usage, to the charge that it is a vehicle of neo-imperialism in its acquired role as a global language; from the allegation that it was a debased and inconsistent language as a result of political corruption to the claim that it somehow caused moral decadence on the part of its users. What such variability tells us is that there has indeed been a long-standing practice of complaining about English, but that the criticism of the language has been historically specific and has often been intertwined with other arguments beyond the linguistic sphere. In other words, as has been noted elsewhere, language debates are very rarely simply debates about language; they are, more often than not, intertwined with questions of value.

 各時代の人々の間に,言語に対する何らかの理想があるからこそ,そこに達していない現実への不平不満が募るのだろう.とすると,これは言語イデオロギー (linguistic_ideology) の問題といえる.

If such words had been submitted for approval to an absolute monarch of etymology, some perhaps would not have been admitted to the language. But our language is governed not by an absolute monarch, nor by an academy, far less by a European Court of Human Rights, but by a stern reception committee, the users of the language themselves. Homogeneity of language origin comes low in their ranking of priorities; euphony, analogy, a sense of appropriateness, an instinctive belief that a word will settle in if there is a need for it and will disappear if there is not---these are the factors that operate when hybrids (like any other new words) are brought into the language. If the coupling of mixed-language elements seems too gross, some standard speakers write (now fax) severe letters to the newspapers. Attitudes are struck. This is all as it should be in a democratic country. But amoral, bureaucracy, and the other mixed-blood formations persist, and the language has suffered only invisible dents.

(1) [verb][prescriptive_grammar][conjugation][preterite][participle][taboo][complaint_tradition][lowth]

Verbs. In intransitive uses, coinciding with or resembling those of lie, except in certain nautical expressions, lay 'is only dialectal or an illiterate substitute for lie' (OED). Its identity of form with the past tense of lie no doubt largely accounts for the confusion. In the 17c. and 18c. the alternation of lay and lie seems not to have been regarded as a solecism. Nowadays confusion of the two is taken to be certain evidence of imperfect education or is accepted in regional speech as being a deep-rooted survival from an earlier period. . . .
The paradigm is merciless, admitting no exceptions in standard English. Incorrect uses: She layed hands on people and everybody layed hands on each other and everybody spoke in tongues---T. Parks, 1985 (read laid); Laying back some distance from the road . . . it was built in 1770 in the Italian style---Fulham Times, 1987 (read lying); Where's the glory in . . . leaving people out with their medals all brushed up laying under the rubble, dying for the glory of the revolution?--New Musical Express, 1988 (read lying); We are going to lay under the stars by the sea---Sun, 1990 (read lie); They may have lost the last fight [sc. the final of a ruby tournament], but how narrow it was, and they can still be proud of all the battle honours that will lay for ever in their cathedral in Twickenham--(sport column in) Observer, 1991 (read lie).

両動詞の混同がいかにタブー的であるかは,"The paradigm is merciless, admitting no exceptions in standard English." という1文によって鮮やかに示されている.現代に至るまで,その「誤用」は跡を絶たないようだ.
 このタブーの伝統を創始したのは,Robert Lowth (1710--87) を始めとする18世紀の規範主義文法家といわれる(cf. 「#2583. Robert Lowth, Short Introduction to English Grammar」 ([2016-05-23-1]),「#3036.

#3239. 英語に関する不平不満の伝統 [complaint_tradition][prescriptivism][prescriptive_grammar][dryden][swift][language_myth][stigma]

Type 1 complaints, which are implicitly legalistic and which are concerned with correctness, attack 'mis-use' of specific parts of the phonology, grammar, vocabulary of English (and in the case of written English 'errors' of spelling, punctuation, etc.). . . . The correctness tradition (Type 1) is wholly dedicated to the maintenance of the norms of Standard English in preference to other varieties: sometimes writers in this tradition attempt to justify the usages they favour and condemn those they dislike by appeals to logic, etymology and so forth. Very often, however, they make no attempt whatever to explain why one usage is correct and another incorrect: they simply take it for granted that the proscribed form is obviously unacceptable and illegitimate; in short, they believe in a transcendental norm of correct English. / . . . . Type 1 complaints (on correctness) may be directed against 'errors' in either spoken or written language, and they frequently do not make a very clear distinction between the two. (30--31)

 Type 1 は,いわゆる最も典型的なタイプであり,上で前提とし,簡単に説明してきた種類の不平不満である.「誤用批判」とくくってよいだろう.このタイプの伝統が標準英語を維持 (maintenance) する機能を担ってきたという指摘もおもしろい.
 次に挙げる Type 2 は Type 1 ほど知られていないが,やはり Swift あたりにまで遡る伝統がある.

Type 2 complaints, which we may call 'moralistic', recommend clarity in writing and attack what appear to be abuses of language that may mislead and confuse the public. . . . / Type 2 complaints do not devote themselves to stigmatising specific errors in grammar, phonology, and so on. They accept the fact of standardisation in the written channel, and they are concerned with clarity, effectiveness, morality and honesty in the public use of the standard language. Sometimes elements of Type 1 can enter into Type 2 complaints, in that the writers may sometimes condemn non-standard usage in the belief that it is careless or in some way reprehensible; yet the two types of complaints can in general be sharply distinguished. The most important modern author in this second tradition is George Orwell . . . (30)

 Type 1 を "the correctness tradition" と呼ぶならば,Type 2 は "the moralistic tradition" と呼んでよいだろう.引用にあるように,George Orwell (1903--50) が最も著名な主唱者である.Type 2 を代表する近年の動きとしては,1979年に始められた "Plain English Campaign" がある.公的な情報には誰にでも分かる明快な言葉遣いを心がけるべきだと主張する組織であり,明快な英語で書かれた文書に "Crystal Mark" を付す活動を行なっているほか,毎年,明快な英語に対して賞を贈っている.

#3220. イングランド史上初の英語アカデミーもどきと Dryden の英語史上の評価 [academy][double_comparative][preposition_stranding][dryden][complaint_tradition]

(The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge)

In making these attacks Dryden is possibly the first person to select examples of the language usage of others and arbitrarily assert that they are intrinsically incorrect. To prove his points, Dryden attempted to find observable evidence in his opponents' texts. The problem was that he did not know enough about language to do this properly, and consequently from a linguistic point of view his remarks are ill founded. Nevertheless he did successfully establish the convention whereby people without any special knowledge of language feel entitled to assert that some other people have failed in the acquisition of their mother tongue.

#3004. 英語史は英語の成功物語か? [historiography][language_myth][linguistic_imperialism][official_language][complaint_tradition]

#1948. Addison の clipping 批判 [clipping][shortening][slang][prescriptive_grammar][shortening][clipping][swift][genitive][clitic][complaint_tradition]

 昨日の記事では「#1947. Swift の clipping 批判」([2014-08-26-1]) について見たが,Swift の同時代人である Joseph Addison (1672--1719) も,皮肉交じりにほぼ同じ言語論を繰り広げている.

Joseph Addison launched an attack on monosyllables in the Spectator (135, 4 August 1711):

The English Language . . . abound[s] in monosyllables, which gives an Opportunity of delivering our Thoughts in few Sounds. This indeed takes off from the Elegance of our Tongue, but at the same time expresses our Ideas in the readiest manner.

He observes that some past-tense forms --- e.g. drown'd, walk'd, arriv'd --- in which the -ed had formerly been pronounced as a separate syllable (as we still do in the adjectives blessed and aged) had become monosyllables. A similar situation is found in the case of drowns, walks, arrives, 'which in the Pronunciation of our Forefathers were drowneth, walketh, arriveth'. He objects to the genitive 's, which he incorrectly assumes to be a reduction of his and her, and for which he in any case gives no examples. He asserts that the contractions mayn't, can't, sha'n't, wo'n't have 'much untuned our Language, and clogged it with Consonants'. He dismisses abbreviations such as mob., rep., pos., incog. as ridiculous, and complains about the use of short nicknames such as Nick and Jack.

#1947. Swift の clipping 批判 [clipping][shortening][slang][prescriptive_grammar][shortening][clipping][swift][complaint_tradition]

Swift の言語に関する姿勢は,Baugh and Cable (259) が "Taking his writings as a whole, one may surmise that he would have preferred that the seventeenth century, at least after 1640, with its political, commercial, and scientific revolutions had never happened." と評しているほどに保守的だった.
 だが,逆にいえば,このことは,当時単音節語化が頻繁に起こっていた証拠でもある.Swift がやり玉に挙げたのは,rep (< reputation) や mob (< mobile) などの切株語である.Baugh and Cable (259) より,説明を引用しよう.

The things that specifically troubled the gloomy dean in his reflections on the current speech were chiefly innovations that he says had been growing up in the last twenty years. One of these was the tendency to clip and shorten words that should have retained their full polysyllabic dignity. He would have objected to taxi, phone, bus, ad, and the like, as he did to rep, mob, penult, and others. The practice seems to have been a temporary fad, although not unknown to any period of the language.

 昨日の記事で論じた内容と合わせて考えると,Swift はこれらの切株語形成の背後に感じられる,大衆の "desire for emotive effects" に鼻持ちならなかったのかもしれない.感情は理性によって抑えるべしとする世の中一般に対する Swift の態度が,保守的な言語論へと発展していったものと思われる.
 しかし,Swift の切株への嫌悪は,ある程度は次世代へも引き継がれた.再び Baugh and Cable (259--60) より引用する.

Thus George Campbell in his Philosophy of Rhetoric (1776) says: "I shall just mention another set of barbarisms, which also comes under this class, and arises from the abbreviation of polysyllables, by lopping off all the syllables except the first, or the first and second. Instances of this are hyp for hypochondriac, rep for reputation, ult for ultimate, penult for penultimate, incog for incognito, hyper for hypercritic, extra for extraordinary.
