#5260. 喜びに満ちた delicious の同根類義語 [eebo][synonym][me][cognate][lexicology][borrowing][loan_word][latin][french][oed][thesaurus][htoed][voicy][heldio]

 今週の月・火と連続して,Voicy 「英語の語源が身につくラジオ (heldio)」(毎朝6時に配信)にて delicious とその類義語の話題を配信しました.

 ・ 「#840. delicious, delectable, delightful」

Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (= HTOED) で調べてみたところ,歴史的には13の「delicious 語」が浮上してきました.いずれも語源的に dēlectāre に遡りうる同根類義語です.以下に一覧します.

・ †delite (c1225--1500): Very pleasant or enjoyable; delightful.
・ delightable (c1300--): Very pleasing or appealing; delightful.
・ delicate (a1382--1911): That causes pleasure or delight; very pleasing to the senses, luxurious; pleasurable, esp. in a way which promotes calm or relaxation. Obsolete.
・ delightful (a1400--): Giving or providing delight; very pleasant, charming.
・ delicious (c1400?-): Very pleasant or enjoyable; very agreeable; delightful; wonderful.
・ delectable (c1415--): Delightful; extremely pleasant or appealing, (in later use) esp. to the senses; very attractive. Of food, drink, etc.: delicious, very appetizing.
・ delighting (?a1425--): That gives or causes delight; very pleasing, delightful.
・ †delitous (a1425): Very pleasant or enjoyable; delightful.
・ delightsome (c1484--): Giving or providing delight; = delightful, adj. 1.
 ・ †delectary (?c1500): Very pleasant; delightful.
・ delighted (1595--1677): That is a cause or source of delight; delightful. Obsolete.
 ・ dilly (1909--): Delightful; delicious.
・ delish (1915--): Extremely pleasing to the senses; (chiefly) very tasty or appetizing. Sometimes of a person: very attractive. Cf. delicious, adj. A.1.

間投詞 My word!」

Synonyms of

 さらに詳しく調べたいのであれば,各類義語が用いられている「現場」からの事例を多数集めて分析することが必要になります.こうなるとコーパスの利用が有用です.まずは,イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の各々について,BNCwebCOCA というコーパスに当たってみるのがお薦めです.
「英語史導入企画2021」の開催中ということで,かなり高度な研究ツールながらも歴史的類義語辞典なるもの紹介しておきましょう.Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (= HTOED) です.

COHA (Corpus of Historical American English), GloWbE (= Corpus of Global Web-Based English), OED (= Oxford English Dictionary),

A special case is shown by tsunami (1897), which, since it denotes a widespread natural phenomenon, can be used freely in English without any implicit associations with Japanese (or even generalized Eastern) culture, and is now preferred by most speakers to the misleading term tidal wave.

One of the most striking and well-known features of lexical data is its extreme variability: as the familiar dictum has it 'chaque mot a son histoire', and accounting for the varied histories of individual words demands classificatory frameworks that are flexible, nonetheless consistent in their approach to similar items. Awareness is perhaps less widespread that the data about word histories presented in historical dictionaries and other resources are rarely 'set in stone': sometimes certain details of a word's history, for instance the details of a coinage, may leave little or no room for doubt, but more typically what is reported in historical dictionaries is based on analysis of the evidence available at time of publication of the dictionary entry, and may well be subject to review if and when further evidence comes to light. First dates of attestation are particularly subject to change, as new evidence becomes available, and as the dating of existing evidence is reconsidered. In particular, the increased availability of electronic text databases in recent years has swollen the flow of new data to a torrent. The increased availability of data should also not blind us to the fact that the earliest attestation locatable in the surviving written texts may well be significantly later than the actual date of first use, and (especially for periods, varieties, or registers for which written evidence is more scarce) may actually lag behind the date at which a word or meaning had already become well established within particular communities of speakers. Additionally, considering the complexities of dating material from the Middle English period . . . highlights the extent to which there may often be genuine uncertainty about the best date to assign to the evidence that we do have, which dictionaries endeavour to convey to their readers by the citation styles adopted. Issues of this sort are grist to the mill of anyone specializing in the history of the lexicon: they mean that the task of drawing broad conclusions about lexical history involves wrestling with a great deal of messy data, but the messiness of the data in itself tells us important things both about the nature of the lexicon and about our limited ability to reconstruct earlier stages of lexical history.

[loan_word][borrowing][lexicology][semantics][oed][htoed][statistics]

To summarize the results of this exercise very briefly . . ., looking in detail at the 100-meaning 'Leipzig-Jakarta list of basic vocabulary' in this way suggests that, while only twenty-two of these meanings appear never to have been realized by a loanword in the data of the OED as summarized in the HTOED, there are only twelve cases where a good case can be made for a loanword being the usual realization of the relevant core meaning in contemporary English:

(from early Scandinavian): root, wing, hit, leg, egg, give, skin, take; (from French): carry, soil, cry, (probably) crush

NDC10 in Mindmap

#3159. HTOED [thesaurus][lexicography][dictionary][semantics][semantic_change][link][htoed][taxonomy]

Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (HTOED). Ed. Christian Kay, Jane Roberts, Michael Samuels and Irené Wotherspoon. 2 vols. Oxford: OUP, 2009.
 (2) グラスゴー大学の提供する (1) のオンライン版.The Historical Thesaurus of English として提供されている.
 (3) OED Online に組み込まれたオンライン版.

各バージョン間には注意すべき差異がある.もともと HTOEDOED の第2版に基づいて編纂されたものであるため,第3版に向けて改変された内容を部分的に含む OED Online と連携しているオンライン版との間で,年代や意味範疇などについて違いがみられることがある.また,OED Online 版は,OED の方針に従って1150年以降に伝わっていない古英語単語がすべて省かれているので,古英語単語について中心的に調べる場合には A Thesaurus of Old English (TOE). Ed. Jane Roberts and Christian Kay with Lynne Grundy. Amsterdam: Rodopi, [1995] 2000. Available online at http://oldenglishthesaurus.arts.gla.ac.uk/ .

02.04.05.03 (adj.) Splendid

 Kay and Allan (15) も,この語群に言及しつつ次のように述べている.

Sometimes there was a degree of experimentation over the form of a new word. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the OED records the following forms meaning 'splendid': splendant, splendicant, splendidious, splendidous, splendiferous, splendious and splendorous. Splendid itself is first recorded in 1624. Unsurprisingly, most of these forms were short-lived; no language needs quite so many similar words for the same concept.

 対応する名詞についても HTOED より抜き出すと,"splendency a1591--1607 ・ splendancy 1591 ・ splendence 1604 ・ splendour 1774-- ・ splendiferousness 1934--" とやはり豊富である.
