魚や蛇の鱗を意味する英単語 scale の語源について．OED や語源辞典によると，OF escale（殻） (cf. F écale) を借用したもので，語頭音消失 (aphetic) を経て1300年頃に ME scale として初出する（MED より scāle (n.(1)) を参照）．この古仏語形自体も，Frankish *skala (cf. OHG skala) などの借用とされ，遡れば Gmc *skalō，さらに IE *(s)kel- (to cut) へたどり着く．意味の拡がりとしては，切片→殻→鱗というような筋道だろう．OE scealu (shell) や sc(i)ell (shell) に起源をもつ PDE shale （頁岩，泥板岩）や shell （殻）も究極的には同根である．
語頭子音についてのみ考えれば，Gmc *sk がフランク語などからフランス語を経て [sk] として英語へ伝わったのが scale であり，古英語期の口蓋化・歯擦化を経て [ʃ] へ発展したのが shell であるということになる．
さて，MED や OED では，scale の初出は1300年頃の作とされる The Auchinleck Manuscript 所収の Guy of Warwick となっている．ところが，作成年代が1世紀ほど先立つ Layamon's Brut を読んでいて，より早い例ではないかと疑われる例に出会った．
10642: Nu he stant on hulle & Auene bi-haldeð Hu ligeð i þan stræme stelene fisces mid sweorde bi-georede .. heore scalen wleoteð, swulc gold-faȝe sceldes.
だが，これは残念ながら見せかけの初例だったようだ．この韻文テキストにおいて頭韻は規則ではなく任意であるものの，問題の scalen は後の sceldes と [ʃ] で頭韻を踏んでいるとみなすのが妥当だろう．つまり，この scalen は scale 系列ではなく，shell 系列の語頭子音を示しているということになる．MED でも，shāle (n.) (b) に Brut の例が挙げられていた．
中英語で sc- と綴られる子音が [sk] なのか [ʃ] なのかを見分けるには，音韻変化の知識，借用語か否かなどの語源的知識，方言と時代の同定，頭韻の考慮，当該テキストにおける綴字と発音の関係 (Potestatic Substitution Set; [2011-02-20-1]の記事「#664. littera, figura, potestas」を参照) の理解などが必要である．もちろんこれは中英語のみならず古英語にもある程度は当てはまるし， sc- に限った話しではないのだが．
大学院の授業で，"Breton lay" と呼ばれるジャンルに属する中英語ロマンス Sir Orfeo を，Burrow and Turville-Petre 版に基づいて読み始める．比較として，Bliss, Sisam, Treharne による版を使用．

The Auchinleck Manuscript (National Library of Scotland Advocates' MS. 19.2.1) は，中世イングランドの語学，文学，写本，読書文化などを論じる際に最も重要な写本の1つといっていいだろう．今日は，この写本の重要性を何点か指摘したい．以下は，Pearsall and Cunningham のイントロ部の "LITERARY AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MANUSCRIPT" (vii--xi) から要点を抜き出してノートしたものである．
・ 1330--40年という早い時期に作成されており，様々なジャンルのテキストを寄せ集めた写本としては，群を抜いて最初期のものである．
・ 納められているテキストの大多数が，各テキストの現存する最古のヴァージョンを提供している．例外は，nos. 4, 7, 8, 13, 19, 29, 34, 35, 40 のみである．
・ テキストのほとんどが英語で書かれている．例外は，no. 20 の Anglo-Norman の混交体と nos. 8, 10, 36 の Latin の挿入部のみである．Auchinleck MS 以前の編纂もの (Jesus College, Oxford, MS. 29; British Library Cotton Caligula A.ix; Trinity College, Cambridge, MS. 323; Bodleian Library Digby 2; Bodleian Library Digby 85; British Library Harley 2253) には，Anglo-Norman と Latin のテキストも普通に見られた．

・ 対象読者層は "popular" とまではいかないが，"the aspirant middle-class citizen, perhaps a wealthy merchant" (viii) だったと想定される．
・ ロンドンの "bookshop" で，複数の写字生が共同作業で作り上げたと考えられる．共同作業は高度に洗練されていたわけではないが，ある程度は組織化されていた．
・ 6人の写字生が以下の分布で共同写本作りに貢献している．scribe 1 が全体の72%を担当している．

昨日の記事[2011-02-26-1]で，中英語ロマンスの言語において formula がいかに大きな割合で用いられているかを見た．ロマンスに formula が多用される背景には，いくつかの説明が提案されている．1つは，有名な The Auchinleck Manuscript のロマンス群に関連して特に言われていることで，ロンドンの写本製作所が「売れ筋本」を大量生産するために，formula を機械的に多用したという "a theory of bookshop composition and extensive textual borrowing" である (Wittig 13) ．もう1つは，ロマンスは，吟遊詩人が口頭で聴衆へ伝えるという意図で作成されたものであり，語りの効果と暗唱のために繰り返しが多くなるのは自然だとする "the oral-transmission theory" である (Wittig 14) ．
しかし，Wittig は上の2つの説明では説得力がないと主張する．ロマンスが中世イングランドの聴衆に受けたのは，分かりきった物語の筋や予測可能な formula を何度も聞かされることにより，物語が描く社会の現状を確認し，是認し，安心感を得ることができたからではないか．ロマンスの語り手と聞き手はともに社会の秩序に対する信頼感をもっており，ロマンスを受容することによって，その秩序を保守することに賛意を表明しているのではないか．したがって，社会が変革すればロマンスというジャンル自体も変容を迫られるか衰退することになる．ロマンスの言語は，語り手と聞き手のスタンスの言語 "a language of stance" (Wittig 46) である．Wittig のこの主張が要約された一節を引く．
If the language does not serve to carry information, what then is its primary function? In addition to carrying a minimal amount of narrative information, the language carries at least one other level of social meaning as well. That is, it carries the additional messages which are encoded within the semiology of social gestures, the language of social ritual: leave-takings, greetings, meals and banquets, marriages and knightings and tournaments. Each one of the highly ritualized events to which the formulas themselves refer is also a kind of formulaic language, a complex system of significations which is as thoroughly understood and articulated in its own culture as that culture's natural language and which is indeed a language even though it may not be a verbal one. In the romances the language of the verse refers much of the time to this second-order system, and its message-bearing function is then doubled. The language of these narratives functions not only as a medium of narrative, but as a powerful social force which supports, reinforces, and perpetuates the social beliefs and customs held by the culture, perhaps long past their normal time of decline. 中英語後期，14世紀後半から，英語に書きことば標準 ( written standard ) が現れ出した．この頃から，英語がそれまでのフランス語に代わって政治・行政や文学のために用いられるようになり，より広く通用する書きことば標準が求められるようになった．書きことば標準の発達過程は非常に複雑で，さまざま議論が繰り広げられているが，議論の出発点として Samuels の書きことば標準の4タイプが有名である (165--70)．以下に，Horobin (13--15) を参考にまとめてみる．
Type 1: the Central Midlands Standard としても知られる．John Wycliffe や Lollards と結びつけられる翻訳聖書などのテキストに残る書きことば．
Type 2: 14世紀中後期のロンドン写本群に残る書きことば．ロンドンや中西部出身の写字生によって1340年頃に書写された Auchinleck 写本のテキストを含む．他に，(1) The Mirror: BL MS Harley 5085, (2) Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, MS 282, (3) Glasgow University Library MS Hunter 250 を含む．1380年代に一人の写字生によって書写された，(4) BL MS Harley 874, (5) Bodleian Library MS Laud Misc. 622, (6) Magdalene College, Cambridge, MS Pepys 2498 なども含む．Norfolk や Suffolk からロンドンへ移民した人々の言語特徴が反映されている．
Type 3: 1400年前後のロンドンの書きことば．(1) Hengwrt MS of The Canterbury Tales, (2) Ellesmere MS The Canterbury Tales, (3) Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, MS 61 of Troilus and Criseyde などの最初期の Chaucer 写本を含む．他には，ロンドン・ギルドの申告書や絹物証人の請願書といった市民記録や Thomas Hoccleve の自筆書名入りの写本群を含む．Central Midlands の方言特徴を示す．
Type 4: 15世紀初期に Type 3 を置きかえた書きことば標準．"Chancery Standard" とも呼ばれる．1430年以降，政府文書に大量に現れてくる．Central Midlands 方言のうえに North Midlands の方言がかぶさった言語特徴を示す．
Type 4 が Type 3 を置きかえた過程や，Type 4 が現在の書きことば標準といかなる関係にあるか，については不明な点が多く今後もさかんに研究が進められていくだろう．
