Tristan da Cunha English (cf. 「#2311. Tristan da Cunha」 ([2015-08-25-1])), Falkland Islands English (cf. 「#3249. The Falkland Islands」 ([2018-03-20-1])), Newfoundland English (cf. 「#4490. イギリスの北米植民の第2弾と第3弾」 ([2021-08-12-1])), Glaswegian Scots, Milton Keynes and 'Estuary English', Scottish Standard English (cf. 「#1719.

The formation of new varieties of a language does appear to follow set patterns, based in particular upon the original inputs derived from the linguistic backgrounds of early settlers. A number of scholars --- most notably Trudgill --- are convinced that it would be possible to predict the outcome of this mix from the proportion of different origins in the initial settlement. Others are unconvinced by this argument, in particular in relation to a 'mindless' application of proportions, without reference to personal and group identities and the shifting linguistic attitudes found in all societies. Nevertheless, analyses of this type are useful in making us think about both origins and evolutionary change.
Equally useful, but also suspect, are the concepts of founder effect and swamping. The primary issue with these explanations is that they are very effective in some contexts, but do not seem to have much effect elsewhere . . . . The fact that the two apparently antagonistic views are actually sometimes similar and may well work together under certain circumstances needs to be borne in mind. Whatever their full applicability, both are useful metaphors for how some parts of a population can affect the development of a new variety even when they are not in the majority.

[sociolinguistics][south_africa][variety][founder_principle]

There is some evidence which suggests . . . that this South-Eastern English predominance does not represent well the history of the first English-speaking immigrants of the 1820s, when the Cape and its surrounding districts had newly been brought under British control. (English speakers would have been regular visitors to the Cape during the period of Dutch rule; they would have been unlikely to have made a lasting impression on the linguistic history of the region, however.) The settlers of the 1850s in KwaZulu-Natal may be more representative of the later speech patterns of South African English . . . . Practically all evidence for any local variety of English predating this central event has been expunged from the present dialect. Thus the nature of an initial variety is swamped.

There are . . . significant reasons for not lumping expanded pidgins and creoles in the same category, usually identified as creole and associated with the fact that they have acquired a native speaker population. . . . [T]hey evolved in opposite directions, although they are all associated with plantation colonies, with the exception of Hawaiian Creole, which actually evolved in the city . . . . Creoles started from closer approximations of their 'lexifiers' and then evolved gradually into basilects that are morphosyntactically simpler, in more or less the same ways as their 'lexifiers' had evolved from morphosyntactically more complex Indo-European varieties, such as Latin or Old English. According to Chaudenson (2001), they extended to the logical conclusion a morphological erosion that was already under way in the nonstandard dialects of European languages that the non-Europeans had been exposed to. On the other hand, expanded pidgins started from rudimentary language varieties that complexified as their functions increased and diversified.

Had linguists remembered that the European 'lexifiers' had actually evolved from earlier, more complex morphosyntaxes, they would have probably taken into account more of the socioeconomic histories of the colonies, which suggest a parallel evolution" (48) .

Mufwene, Salikolo S. (The Ecology of Language Evolution. Cambridge: CUP, 2001.)

Returning to African American Vernacular English, Mufwene essentially suggests that the plantation environments so crucial to the development of English creoles in the Caribbean were a relatively late feature in the history of African settlement in North America. On plantations, speakers of mainstream Englishes rarely interacted regularly with the slave population, meaning that new varieties of a creole type could develop unchecked. But for a large part of the seventeenth century (and into the eighteenth century in many places), African slaves in North America did not live on large plantations, growing cotton, tobacco or rice, depending on where the plantation was situated. Instead, most lived in much close proximity to their owners and, crucially, indentured servants, essentially temporary slaves of European --- normally English-speaking --- origin, on a much smaller farm. While there might be a number of slaves on the larger farms, the numerical preponderance of Africans associated with later plantations was nowhere in evidence. Mufwene terms this period the homestead stage.
This close proximity did not necessarily make the slaves' lives easier than they were later, but it did make it possible for Africans to learn the dominant language directly and continuously from native speakers in a way which fundamentally differs from the situation in which Africans found themselves in the large Caribbean plantations, where mainstream varieties of English were normally in short supply. It is likely, of course, that the primary influence on the evolving English of Africans during this period was not the language of the prosperous but rather of those with whom they had most contact; in particular, perhaps, the English of the indentured servants.
