少々遅ればせながらの話題たが，American Dialect Society による2020年の Word of the Year を紹介しよう．案の定 Covid である．
1年ちょっと前には存在すらしなかったこの単語が，今や世界で最もよく使われる語の1つとなった．問題のウィルスを Covid-19 と WHO が命名したのが2020年2月のこと．その後すぐに Covid と短縮され，単体で用いられるだけでなく，Covid crisis, Covid relief, Covid vaccine のような複合語の部分としても広く用いられるようになった．詳細はこちらのページをどうぞ．さらに詳しくは，こちらのプレスリリース (PDF) も参照．
このプレスリリースより，受賞を逃した他のノミネート語を，その定義とともに挙げてみよう．Covid 絡みのものが圧倒的に多い．
・ Covid: shorthand for Covid-19, the name given to the disease caused by infection from novel coronavirus; also used more broadly to refer to the pandemic and its impacts

American Dialect Society による1990年以降の受賞語（とノミネート語）のリストはこちら．
今年もこの時期がやってきた．American Dialect Society による 2015年の The Word of the Year が1月8日に発表された．今年の受賞は，singular "they" である．
They was recognized by the society for its emerging use as a pronoun to refer to a known person, often as a conscious choice by a person rejecting the traditional gender binary of he and she.

The use of singular they builds on centuries of usage, appearing in the work of writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen. In 2015, singular they was embraced by the Washington Post style guide. Bill Walsh, copy editor for the Post, described it as "the only sensible solution to English's lack of a gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronoun."
While editors have increasingly moved to accepting singular they when used in a generic fashion, voters in the Word of the Year proceedings singled out its newer usage as an identifier for someone who may identify as "non-binary" in gender terms.
"In the past year, new expressions of gender identity have generated a deal of discussion, and singular they has become a particularly significant element of that conversation," Zimmer said. "While many novel gender-neutral pronouns have been proposed, they has the advantage of already being part of the language."
なぜ今さら singular they がという気がしないでもなかったが，上の記事と合わせて Wordorigins.org: ADS Word of the Year for 2015 の記事を読んでみて合点がいった．単に性別を問わない単数の一般人称代名詞としての they の用法はここ数十年間で確かに認知されてきており，とりわけ2015年を特徴づける語法というわけではないが，男女という性別の二分法そのものに疑問を呈するシンボル (nonbinary identifier) として，昨年，焦点が当てられたという．テレビ番組などで transgender の話題が多く取り上げられ，"nonbinary identifier" としての they の使用が目立ったということだ．なお，singular they は，MOST USEFUL カテゴリーでも受賞している．時代のキーワードであることが，特によくわかる受賞だった．

去る1月9日，American Dialect Society による 2014年の The Word of the Year が発表された．プレス・リリース (PDF) はこちら．
2014年の大賞は #blacklivesmatter である．新設されたHASHTAG部門からの大賞受賞で，2009年の受賞語 twitter，2012年の受賞語 hashtag に続き，twitter 周辺のメッセージ性が評価されているということだろう．
The hashtag #blacklivesmatter took on special significance in 2014 after the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. and Eric Garner in Staten Island, N.Y., and the failure of grand juries to indict police officers in both cases. It became a rallying cry and vehicle for expressing protest, fueled by social media.
The word hashtag itself was the ADS Word of the Year in 2012. Now, two years later, hashtags were recognized with their own special category in the voting, which was also won by #blacklivesmatter.
"While #blacklivesmatter may not fit the traditional definition of a word, it demonstrates how powerfully a hashtag can convey a succinct social message," Zimmer said. "Language scholars are paying attention to the innovative linguistic force of hashtags, and #blacklivesmatter was certainly a forceful example of this in 2014."
MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED 部門の受賞語 salty とノミネート語 basic はいずれも既存の形容詞だが，新たに生じた語義が注目されているようだ．salty は "exceptionally bitter, angry, or upset" の意味で，basic は "plain, socially awkward, unattractive, uninteresting, ignorant, pathetic, uncool, etc." の意味で新しく用いられているという．いずれも俗語的な響きをもち否定的な評価的意味 (evaluative meaning) を発展させているという点で共通している．関連して，評価的意味とその歴史的発展について「#1099. 記述の形容詞と評価の形容詞」 ([2012-04-30-1])，「#1100. 2013年の大賞は because である．古い語だが，新しい語法が発達してきたゆえの受賞という．
This past year, the very old word because exploded with new grammatical possibilities in informal online use. . . . No longer does because have to be followed by of or a full clause. Now one often sees tersely worded rationales like 'because science' or 'because reasons.' You might not go to a party 'because tired.' As one supporter put it, because should be Word of the Year 'because useful!'
この新用法は，現在は "in informal online use" という register に限定されているが，上記の通り便利であるにはちがいないので，今後 register を拡げてゆく可能性がある．MOST USEFUL 部門でも受賞している．
新用法は because が節ではなく語や句を従えることができるようになったというものだが，これには2種類が区別されるように思われる．1つは，"because tired" や "because useful" のように，統語的要素が省略されていると考えられるもの．ここでは，それぞれ "because (I am) tired" や "because (it is) useful" のように主語＋ be 動詞が省略されていると解釈できる．発話されている状況などの語用論的な情報を参照せずとも，統語的に「復元」できるタイプだ．統語的に論じられるべき用法といえるだろう．
もう1つは，"because science" や "because reasons" のタイプだ．これは "because of science" や "because of reasons" とも異なるし，一意に統語的に節へ「復元」できるわけでもない．むしろ，1語により節に相当する意味を想像させ，含蓄や余韻を与える修辞的な効果を出している．こちらは，統語的というよりは修辞的に論じられるべき用法といえる．
さて，受賞した because のほかにも，ノミネート語句や他部門での受賞語句があり，眺めてみるとおもしろい．例えば slash は，"used as a coordinating conjunction to mean 'and/or' (e.g., 'come and visit slash stay') or 'so' ('I love that place, slash can we go there?')" と説明されており，確かに便利な語である．書き言葉に属する句読記号 (punctuation) の1つを表す語が，話し言葉で接続詞として用いられているというのがおもしろい．「以上終わり」を意味する間投詞としての Period. に類する特異な例である．
今年はこの話題を持ち出すのを今まで忘れていた．例年，本ブログでも1月前半に取り上げるはずの話題である．1月4日に，American Dialect Society により 2012年の The Word of the Year が公表された．大賞は Twitter のシンボル hashtag である．「#263. 1990年から2009年までの英語流行語大賞」 ([2010-01-15-1]) で見たように，2009年の WOY が twitter そのものだったことを合わせて考えると，この新メディアの影響力の大きさが改めて実感される．この語は次のように定義される．
Hashtag refers to the practice used on Twitter for marking topics or making commentary by means of a hash symbol (#) followed by a word or phrase.
大賞のほかに様々な部門賞が設けられているが，MOST USEFUL 部門の受賞は接尾辞 -(po)calypse, -(ma)geddon (hyperbolic combining forms for various catastrophes) ．MOST CREATIVE 部門からは，gate lice (airline passengers who crowd around a gate waiting to board) ．MOST UNNECESSARY 部門と MOST OUTRAGEOUS 部門の2部門を制覇したのは，legitimate rape (type of rape that Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin claimed rarely results in pregnancy) ．MOST EUPHEMISTIC 部門では，self-deportation (policy of encouraging illegal immigrants to return voluntarily to their home) ．MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED 部門からは marriage equality (legal recognition of same-sex marriage) が，LEAST LIKELY TO SUCCEED 部門からは phablet (mid-sized electronic device between a smartphone and a tablet) 及び YOLO (acronym for "You Only Live Once," often used sarcastically or self-deprecatingly) が受賞した．大統領選挙の年の新部門として ELECTION WORDS 部門からは，binders (full of women) (term used by Romney in the second presidential debate to describe the resumes of female job candidates that he consulted as governor of Massachusetts) が選ばれた．

今年もこの時期が巡ってきた．American Dialect Society による The Word of the Year の公表の時期だ．2011年の大賞は occupy だった．既存の語ではあるが，"verb, noun, and combining form referring to the Occupy protest movement" という用法により新たに生命を吹き込まれた．
2011年9月17日，New York の Zuccotti Park で "Occupy Wall Street" の運動が始まった．これ以降，世界で類似の Occupy movement が多発．民衆が，"We are the 99%" というスローガンを掲げて，経済や社会の不平等を一斉に唱え出した事件である．
occupy は，ノミネートされた語句のなかでは，2011年のかなり後半からの出馬だったが，よほど衝撃が強かったようで，決選投票の末に次点の the 99%, 99 percenters を大差で破った．後者は "those held to be at a financial or political disadvantage to the top moneymakers, the one-percenters" を意味し，これも言ってみれば occupy 関連用語だから，当社会現象の影響の大きさが知れる．

2011年の流行語については，The Daily Telegraph の2011年11月10日の記事でも，occupy が過去1年間でインターネット及び紙面で最も多く使われた英単語だったとする研究を紹介している．
The most commonly used English word on the internet and in print in the past year was "occupy", a study has found. Repeated references to the Occupy Movement, which inspired protests outside St Paul's Cathedral in London and in other major world cities, helped push the word into first place, researchers said.
流行語の公表としては，ほかに Global Language Monitor によるものがある．その記事によると，2011年の Top Word はやはり occupy．Top Phrase は Arab Spring で，Top Name は Steve Jobs とのこと．

今年もこの時期がやってきた．American Dialect Society による流行語大賞の公表の時期だ．2009年は[2010-01-14-1]の記事で紹介したように tweet が大賞に選ばれたが，2010年は app だった．
詳しくは1月7日付けのADS による公式発表とプレスリリース (PDF)を参照されたいが，問題の語の定義は以下の通りである．
"app" --- noun, an abbreviated form of application, a software program for a computer or phone operating system
app は日本語では「アプリ」としてすでに広く認知されている．この英単語は OED では初出1985年として見出し語に採用されており，決して新しい語ではない．しかし昨年はコンピュータだけでなく iPhone, iPad などの電子端末に対応するアプリケーションの需要が激増し，app store なるオンライン店舗も目立つようになってきた．2年続けてITサービス関連の語が受賞という事実に，時代の波を感じる（「IT」というかつての流行語はすでに古いかも）．
他のノミネート語や部門ごとの受賞語を眺めてみると特にアメリカの，しかししばしば世界的な世相が分かる．Wikileaks や vuvuzela の如くである．ネット関連でよく使われる動詞としての trend "to exhibit a burst of online buzz" が MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED 部門での受賞となったのもなるほどと思わせる．
ADS では Word of the Year for 2010 と合わせて，姉妹大賞である Name of the Year for 2010 の投票も行なわれた．後者を受賞したのは，本ブログの[2010-04-20-1]の記事でも触れた，アイスランドの火山 Eyafjalljökul だった．
ADS の 新語委員会委員長の Ben Zimmer は，[2010-08-11-1]の記事で紹介した Visual Thesaurus の製作責任者でもある．
[2010-01-15-1]の記事で掲載したが，昨日の記事[2010-05-25-1]の関連スライドで取りあげた to pluto 「降格させる」は American Dialect Society により2006年の英語流行語大賞に選ばれた有名な動詞である．
2006年8月の国際天文学連合 ( IAU ) の総会で惑星の定義をめぐり議論が白熱したことは記憶に新しい．その議決で冥王星 ( Pluto ) は惑星ではなく準惑星 ( dwarf planet ) として再定義されることになり，いわば「降格」することになった．冥王星は太陽系第9番目の惑星として世界に広く親しまれていただけに，IAU の議決は世界にショックを与えるとともに，冥王星を降格と結びつける社会的なジョークが生まれた．その一つが，動詞 to pluto である．ADS によれば，この動詞は次のように定義される．
To pluto is to demote or devalue someone or something, as happened to the former planet Pluto when the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto no longer met its definition of a planet.
以下に，例文を三つほど．
・ Pluto got plutoed, but it still won WOTY [Word of the Year].
・ He was plutoed like an old pair of shoes.
・ A recent Andy Borowitz humor column . . . reports that the Bush presidency has been plutoed: An international group of scientists who demoted the planet Pluto to dwarf status three months ago met in Oslo, Norway today and reclassified the Bush White House as a dwarf Presidency. . . . with the President's approval rating in a free fall, it became clear even before the scientists convened that some sort of reclassification along the lines of the Pluto demotion was in order.
固有名詞 Pluto を小文字化し動詞化するという芸当ができるのも，英語に conversion という語形成の手段が与えられているからである．日本語では，元読売巨人軍投手にちなんだ「江川る」（強引に物事を進める）などが to pluto の転用に近いと思われれるが，英語は何しろ「る」も何もつけずにそのまま品詞転換してしまい，-ed まで付加されてしまうのだからものすごい．conversion については [2009-11-03-1] を参照．

昨日の記事[2010-01-14-1]で紹介したように，American Dialect Society による2009年の英語流行語大賞のプレスリリースに，1990年以降の受賞語句がまとめて掲載されている．見やすいように，大賞受賞語句を一覧にしてみた．英語ならずとも，確かに時代を感じるなあ．

[2009-12-28-1]の記事で紹介した American Dialect Society が，2010年1月08日(金)付けで2009年の英語の流行語大賞 "word of the year" を発表した．10年間の締めくくりの年でもあったので，同時に "word of the decade" も発表された．詳しくは，American Dialect Society，あるいは直接プレスリリースがこちらのPDFで閲覧可能である．
結果からいえば，"2009 Word of the Year" が tweet，"Word of the Decade" が google である．近年のウェブ・コミュニケーション技術の台頭を物語る結果である．
"2009 Word of the Year" の tweet は，"(noun) a short message sent via the Twitter.com service, and (verb) the act of sending such a message" と定義される．Twitter は Twitter.com が提供するオンライン「つぶやき」サービスで，昨年から今年にかけて日本でも大ブレークしている．電子メールとチャットの中間程度の「緩い」コミュニケーションを可能としたことが売りで，iPhone などの携帯端末からオンラインに向かって日々つぶやく人が増加した．
"Word of the Decade" の google は，"a generic form of 'Google,' meaning 'to search the Internet' " の意味で，確かに動詞として一般化した観がある．ちなみに "Word of the Decade" の次点は blog であり，やはりウェブ・コミュニケーション用語である．第三位は 9/11 だった．
これらの流行語は American Dialect Society 主催の投票によって選ばれるが，プレスリリースでは賞の開始された1990年以来の各部門の受賞語句が確認できるので，ぜひ読んでおきたい．部門としては，"MOST UNNECESSARY" 部門，"MOST OUTRAGEOUS" 部門，"MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED" 部門の受賞語句などが，ときに笑える．
学会の主催するイベントでありながら，ユーモアの忘れられていないところが楽しい．プレスリリース中の以下のコメントにも，方針がこう謳われている．
Members in the 120-year-old organization include linguists, lexicographers, etymologists, grammarians, historians, researchers, writers, authors, editors, professors, university students, and independent scholars. In conducting the vote, they act in fun and do not pretend to be officially inducting words into the English language. Instead they are highlighting that language change is normal, ongoing, and entertaining. (1)
10年遅れの話題だが，年末ということで思い出したのでメモ．American Dialect Society では毎年，協会誌 American Speech にて英語の流行語大賞が発表されている．2000年には豪華なことに "1999 words of the year", "words of the decade", "words of the century", "words of the millennium" が一気に公表された．
その年の流行語大賞がその一年の社会の変化を振り返るのにうってつけであるのと同様に，10年，100年，1000年というスパンでの「流行語」を顧みることは，社会の歴史を振り返るのにうってつけである．以下は，大賞にノミネートされた語句である．受賞語句には * を付してある．

millennium の単位になると，ノミネートの基準も分かるような分からないような，である．語彙史的には，特に go, the, そして受賞した she が気になるところである．いずれもゲルマン系の超基本語であり，この形態・機能に落ち着くまでにある程度の時間のかかった語である．確かに歴史を背負った語といってよい．
ちなみに "Words of the Millennium" にノミネートされた15語のうち，間違いなく英語の本来語といえるものは freedom, truth, book, go, the の5語のみであり，他は借用語である．このことは，1500年余の英語の語彙史を象徴しているように思える．
