#4352. Skelton の口語的詩行[literature][emode][rhyme][alliteration][onomatopoeia][3sp][skelton]

　教会を揶揄する風刺詩を書いた John Skelton (1460?--1529) は，文学史上，押韻するが不規則な短行を用いた詩型 "Skeltonics" で知られる（ただし文学的に評価されるようになったのは20世紀になってからのこと）．歯に衣着せぬ物言いながらも，Henry VIII の家庭教師となり宮廷でも地位を得た．主作品の1つに Colyn Cloute (1522) がある．当時の実力者 Thomas Wolsey 卿を軽口をたいて風刺するリズムが小気味よい．近代英語期最初期の生き生きとした口語的リズムを伝えるテキストとしても興味深い．
　Bergs and Brinton (303) が，初期近代英語に関するハンドブックのなかで当時の「言葉遊び」 (language play) の1例として，Skelton のテキストを挙げている．

His hed is so fat
He wotteth neuer what
Nor wherof he speketh
He cryeth and he creketh
He pryethh and he peketh
He chydes and he chatters
He prates and he patters
He clytters and he clatters
He medles and he smatters
He gloses and he flatters

　詩的技巧としては，脚韻 (rhyme) はもちろんのこと，頭韻 (alliteration) も目立つし，オノマトペ (onomatopoeia) に由来すると考えられる動詞も多用されている．3単現の語尾として従来の -eth と新興の -s が共存しているのも，当時の英語の変化と変異を念頭におくと興味深い．とりわけ調子が乗ってきた辺りで口語的な -s が連発するのも，味わい深い．詩である以上に言葉遊びであり，言葉遊びである以上に当時の生きた口語を映し出すものとして読むことができる．
