多くの現代人にとって，なぜ英語を学ぶのかという問いは自明であって，改めて問う必要はないかのように聞こえるだろう．私はこの問いの答えは必ずしも自明ではなく，各学習者が真剣に考えるべき問題だと思っているが，ひとまずその議論はおいておき，ここでは英語学習の自明性をひとまず認めておくことにしよう．
　では，なぜ英語史を学ぶのかという問いはどうだろうか．多くの英語学習者にとってこの答えは自明ではないかもしれないが，一度じっくり考えてみてほしい．ある人は，自分の学んでいる言語がたどってきた歴史文化を学ぶことは，学習上きっと大事なことにちがいない，という漠然とした関心を抱いているかもしれない．ある人は，なぜ英語がここまで世界で広く使用される言語になったのか，その理由を歴史の中に探りたい，という明確な問題意識を抱いているかもしれない．
　児馬修（『ファンダメンタル英語史』　ひつじ書房，1996年，ii--iii頁）は英語史を学ぶ意義について述べているが，私の解釈を含めてまとめると次の3点になろう．

　・現代英語を深く理解することができる
　・歴史に基づいた英語観を形成することができる（特に英語を教える立場にある者には必要）
　・英語の言語変化を考える際の材料を得ることができる

　私なりに整理した「英語史を学ぶ意義」は次の5点である．

　(1) 現代英語の文法や語彙が学びやすくなる．（今まで関連の見えなかった現象につながりが見えてくる．不合理・不規則に見える現象の根拠を知ることができる．）
　(2) 英語の過去を通じて英語の未来を意識することで，能動的・戦略的に英語を学ぶ姿勢が身につけられる．（未来における英語の立場を予想できれば，英語学習が本当に必要かどうかを自分で判断できるようになる．英語学習の動機も高められる．）
　(3) 言語は変わるものであり，多様なものであるという許容的な言語観が形成され，おおらかに英語を学べる，あるいは教えられるようになる．
　(4) 英語史は一つの物語であるから，おはなしとして面白い．
　(5) 研究分野として純粋に面白い．（学問研究は世の役に立つからという理由で存在しているのではない．あくまで対象が美しいがゆえにそれに惹かれるということが学問研究の出発点である．結果として役に立つこともあるし，そうでないこともある．）

　英語史は，英語を学ぶ者すべてにとって大きな意義があると確信している．特に英語を教える立場にある人にとっては(2)や(3)のポイントは重要なのではないか．
