#6207. 英語における Scots 「スコッツ語」の初例[scots][variety][oed]

　Socts は「スコットランド英語」や「スコットランド語」と訳されることもあるが，ともすれば前者は "Scottish (standard) English" の訳語となり得るし，後者は "Scottish Gaelic" の訳語となり得る．誤解のないように独自の名前を与えたいのだが，そうするとそのまま音を借りて「スコッツ語」が無難ということになる．複雑な歴史が関わってくるために，そもそもこれらの言語（変種）が互いに異なることは，必ずしも広く知られているとはいえない（cf. 「#1719. Scotland における英語の歴史」 ([2014-01-10-1])）．
　Scots という英単語が，スコットランドの主に低地地方において千年以上にわたって独自の発展を遂げてきた英語変種を指すものとして用いられるようになったのは，OED の説明によると15世紀末のことである．Scots (ADJECTIVE & NOUN) における名詞としての語義解説といくつかの最初例を挙げよう．

1. A variety of English used in (esp. lowland) Scotland; the variety of this used in parts of the north of Ireland. Frequently also viewed as a distinct language. 1494-

Scots developed from the early northern Middle English that supplanted a Brittonic language in the south of Scotland, and had by the Stuart era spread throughout the nation and taken the place of Latin as the language of record. During the Plantation of Ulster of the 17th cent. it was introduced by Scottish settlers to the north of Ireland, where it survives as Ulster Scots (Ulster Scots n.). From the mid 16th cent. onwards, Scots has become progressively more anglicized.

　形容詞としての用法も16世紀から始まっている．

3. Designating a variety of English used in Scotland (see sense B.1), or literary compositions, speeches, etc., written or spoken in it; (of words, idioms, grammar, etc.) characteristic of or belonging to Scots. 1533-

　これ以前，Scots はケルト系の "Scottish Gaelic" を指示する単語として用いられていたというややこしい背景があることにも注意されたい．1500年を境に，徐々に Socts の指示対象となる言語変種が変わってきたことになる．
