#5171. 複数人称代名詞 we, you, they の総称的用法[pronoun][personal_pronoun][generic][indefinite_pronoun]

　昨日の記事「#5170. 3人称単数代名詞の総称的用法」 ([2023-06-24-1]) に引き続き，人称代名詞の総称的用法 (generic) について．特に we, you, they について，Quirk et al. (§6.21) より紹介したい．導入として次のようにある．

. . . plural pronouns of all persons can function generically with reference to 'people in general':
　　　Science tells us that the earth goes round the sun. [1]
　　　We live in an age of immense changes. [2]
　　　You can never tell what will happen. [3]
　　　These days you have to be careful with your money. [4]
　　　They say it's going to snow today. [5]

　このように we, you, they は総称的に用いられるが，もとの人称の機能を完全に失っているわけではなく，それゆえに必ずしも互いに言い換え可能とはならない．
　we を用いた [1], [2] は，話し手，聞き手，第3者を含むすべての人々を指せるので，もっとも指示範囲が広いと考えられる．目下の発話の状況を起点として全人類にまで拡がっていく包含性がある．したがって，ときにその文は受動文で代用され得る．例えば We now know that the earth is round. は It is now known that the earth is round. と換言される．
　you を用いた [3], [4] は，昨日の記事でも触れたように総称代名詞 one のインフォーマル版と考えられる．ただし，you は聞き手の人生一般や特定の状況の経験に訴えかける効果がある．例えば This wine makes you feel drowsy, doesn't it? のような文を参照．さらには，ときに聞き手ではなく話し手を指示するケースもある．it wasn't a bad life. You got up at seven, had breakfast, went for a walk . . .' のような文を参照．
　they を用いた [5] も you と同様にインフォーマルな響きがある．3人称代名詞の本来的な機能を反映して，話し手と聞き手を除いた人々という含みがあり，軽蔑的に「権威筋」「メディア」「政府」などを指すこともある．例えば I see they're raising the bus fares again. Whatever will they be doing next? や They don't make decent furniture nowadays. のような文を参照．
　we, you, they の総称的用法について，それぞれの人称の原義がうっすらと残存しているという点が興味深い．ただ，1つ疑問がある．上記 you の総称的用法が，複数としての you の用法であると言い切ることができるのかということだ．というのは，引用中で "plural pronouns of all persons can function generically with reference to 'people in general'" とあるからだ．単数としての you の用法と理解することはできないのだろうか．関連して「#2248. 不定人称代名詞としての you」 ([2015-06-23-1])，「#2313. 不定人称代名詞としての thou」 ([2015-08-27-1]) を参照．
