「#378. 語用論は言語理論の基本構成部門か否か」 ([2010-05-10-1]) や「#2000. 歴史語用論の分類と課題」 ([2014-10-18-1]) で取り上げたように，語用論の潮流には，"the (Anglo-American) component view" と "the (European Continental) perspective view" の2種類があるとされる．歴史語用論に対する姿勢から両者を対置させると，前者は理論言語学的な色彩が強く，言語変化を説明するための語用論という位置づけが濃厚である．一方，後者は，言語のみならず社会や文化を含めた広い文脈 (context) を重視し，各時代の談話を読み解いていくという傾向を示す．後者は伝統的な文献学とも親和性が高い．
ハンドブックのある章で，Jucker が歴史語用論を紹介しながら，2潮流の対立を次のように簡潔に表現している．
Researchers investigating pragmatic explanations of language change in general usually adopt the narrow understanding of Anglo-American or theoretical pragmatics, while those studying the diachronic development of pragmatic entities adopt the broader Continental European or social approach to pragmatics.
著者のスタンスは Continental European である．ニュースの談話を取り巻く歴史語用論的な議論の後に，同じ章の最後 (566) で，Continental European の見方の射程の広さをアピールしている．
In a wider Continental European understanding of pragmatics, the pragmaticist focuses not only on the communicative contexts for language change but also on the larger contexts of change in communicative practices, including not only text structures and the ensemble of genres in a particular field of discourse but also larger communicative patterns such as the gathering, transmission, and dissemination of news content.
最初の引用で用いられている "narrow" と "broad" という形容詞も，もちろん客観的な意味における守備範囲の広さ・狭さのことであり，評価的な意味合いは込められていないだろう．とはいえ，両者のスタンスはおおいに異なることは確かである．それぞれの潮流を代表する研究者の間には，様々な違いがある．受けてきた教育の種類の違い，理論と記述のバランスの配分の差，言語学寄りか歴史寄りか，語用論を手段ととらえるか目的ととらえるか，等々．
しかし，2潮流の対立を強調するというよりは，両者がどのように出会い得るかを待ってみるのがよいと思っている．力んで合流点を探すというわけではなく，2つの流れをそのまま流していくのも手なのではないか．「#2883. HiSoPra* に参加して (1)」 ([2017-03-19-1])，「#2884. HiSoPra* に参加して (2)」 ([2017-03-20-1]) でも述べたように，歴史語用論のような新しい分野は，「若さ」ゆえの悩みも当然あるが，過去の学術的遺産を眺望できる立場にあるなど，後発としてのアドバンテージもたくさんもっている．2潮流の行方を眺めていくのも悪くない．
