#3060. 17世紀後半からの tea 用語[pepys][compound][history]

　昨日の記事「#3059. ベンガル語の必修化を巡るダージリンのストライキ」 ([2017-09-11-1]) で Darjeeling について取り上げたので，関連して tea の話題を．「#2934. tea とイギリス」 ([2017-05-09-1]) で見たように，英語における tea の初出は1655年である．The Diary of Samuel Pepys より1660年9月25日の記録を引こう．tea が舶来の飲み物としてはやり始めた頃だったとわかる．

Tuesday 25 September 1660 . . . . To the office, where Sir W. Batten, Colonel Slingsby, and I sat awhile, and Sir R. Ford coming to us about some business, we talked together of the interest of this kingdom to have a peace with Spain and a war with France and Holland; where Sir R. Ford talked like a man of great reason and experience. And afterwards I did send for a cup of tee (a China drink) of which I never had drank before, and went away.

　17世紀後半から18世紀にかけて，tea は洗練された嗜みとして庶民にも拡がっていき，コーヒーを追い抜いていくことなる．tea の人気振りは，関連する食器や家具などを表わす複合語が次々と現われた事実からも見て取ることができるだろう．Crystal (370) から，例を初出年とともに拾ってみよう．
