#957. many more people[adverb][comparison][numeral]

　現代英語で，可算名詞の数が「より多い」場合で，比較基準との差分が大きいときには，many more people などと，比較級の強調に much ではなく many を用いるのが規則である．この many は，more を修飾しているので機能としては副詞的であり，統語上 people と直接関係しているわけではないが，当然，意味上は関連しているために much では不適切との意識が働くのだろう．用例はいくらでもある．

　・ Many more questions were buzzing around in my head.
　・ Many have already died, and in the nature of things many more will die.
　・ They provided a far better news service and pulled in many more viewers.
　・ How many more can she possibly make?
　・ Thousands were saved yesterday, but many more remained trapped.

　many の副詞としての用法を理解していれば，多いのか少ないのか混乱するような many fewer なる表現にも驚かないだろう．

　・ The squid has many fewer tentacles than the nautilus --- only ten --- and the octopus, as its name makes obvious, has only eight.
　・ How many fewer places are there today than there were two years ago?
　・ Making love burns up more calories than playing golf and not that many fewer than throwing a frisbee.

　
　では，この many の品詞は何か．統語的には副詞的なので，『ジーニアス英和大辞典』では素直に副詞として扱っている．比較級を強める much や far と同列に考えても，副詞としての品詞付与は納得されるかもしれない．
　しかし，many には多数を表わす不定数詞としての用法があり，その副詞的用法と解釈することもできる．one more people, two more people, a few more people, some more people, several more people などの表現を参照すれば，many more people はその延長線上に位置づけるのが自然だろう．more の差分を表わすのに，数詞や不定数詞が前置されている構文ととらえるのが理にかなっている．
　OED "more" 4.a. に，関連する記述があった．

4. a. Additional to the quantity or number specified or implied; an additional amount or number of; further. Now rare exc. as preceded by an indefinite or numeral adj., e.g. any more, no more, some more; many more, two more, twenty more; and in archaic phrases like without more ado.
This use appears to have been developed from the advb. use as in anything, nothing more (see C. 4b).

　比較と関連する文脈で不定代名詞がその程度を表わすのに用いられる例としては，[2011-07-12-1]の記事「what with A and what with B」で触れた something like this があろうか．much the same なども関連してくるかもしれない．
　なお，歴史的に見ると，many more 相当表現は少なくとも中英語にはすでに行なわれていたことが，MED "mō (adj.)" に挙げられている例文から確認される．
