梟とナイチンゲールが討論を繰り広げる The Owl and the Nightingale は，初期中英語期を代表する英語文学作品の1つとして受容されている．文学のみならず英語史・文献学の観点からも重要なテキストである．1200年前後（1189?1216年辺りとされる）に南部系の方言で書かれた脚韻詩で，London, British Library, Cotton Caligula A ix と Oxford, Jesus College 29 という2つの写本により現代に伝わっている．主たる校訂本，研究書，オンラインリソースは「#2532.
