中英語では「神にかけて」「キリストにかけて」に相当する各種表現が誓言として常用される．その1変種として，God (hit) wot という表現がある．現代英語でいえば (as) God knows (it) ほどに相当する形式だ．wot という形態は，歴史的には過去現在動詞である中英語の witen (to know) が，直説法現在3人称単数に屈折した形態である（「#66. 過去現在動詞」 ([2009-07-03-1]) を参照）．
　これと似て非なるものが，Godd hit wite という表現である．ここで用いられている wite という形態は，上と同じ witen の「接続法」現在3人称単数形である．つまり，機能としては祈願となり，let God know it ほどの意味になる．最近 Bennett and Smithers 版で Ancrene Wisse の一部を読んでいたときに，この表現に出会った．A. ll. 151--52 に，次のようにある．

Godd hit wite and he hit wat, me were leouere þet ȝe weren alle o þe spitel-uuel þen ȝe weren ontfule . . . .
(God be my witness to it---and he knows it---I had rather you were all lepers than that you should be envious)

　ここでは Godd hit wite と he hit wat の両表現が並んでいるので，その区別に気づきやすい．接続法の用法の機微を感じられる例である．
　Onions が，接続法を用いた方の表現について，おもしろい論考を寄せている (334--35) ．

Their equation with certain Continental Germanic formulæ has been overlooked, and in general their force has been misapprehended. Their meaning is: "Let God (or Christ) know (it)," "God be my witness (to it)," "I call God to witness." They are strong asseverations, and are virtually equivalent to "I declare to God." They are therefore more forcible than God wot, Goddot . . . .

　ゲルマン諸語でも中オランダ語，中低地ドイツ語，中高地ドイツ語に接続法を用いた対応表現が見られる．中英語からの用例はそれほど多く文証されているわけでないのだが，Onions (335) が引用しているように，12世紀の Anglo-Norman の Mestre Thomas による Horn という作品に，次のような箇所がある．

Seignurs bachelers, bien semlez gent bevant,
Ki as noeces alez demener bobant;
Ben iurez wite God, kant auerez beu tant. (Horn, l. 4011, ed. Brede and Stengel.)

(Young gentlemen, you have all the appearance of drinking fellows, who go to weddings to behave uproariously; you swear "wite God" when you are in liquor.)

　この表現が，実際には誓言として常用されていたことを間接的に示す証拠となるのではないか．
