現代英語の「?のおかげで；?の結果，ために」を表わす thanks to . . . という表現の歴史的発達や共時的意味について質問を受け，少々調べ始めてみた．調査の途中だが，まず現代英語の用法について考えてみたい．いくつか，例文を挙げよう．

　・ Thanks to you, I was saved from drowning.
　・ Thanks to Ulysses' wisdom, the Greek army was able to conquer Troy.
　・ The plane was delayed two hours, thanks to bad weather.
　・ It was all a great success --- thanks to a lot of hard work.
　・ I was late to the dinner, thanks to a New York cabbie who couldn't speak English.
　・ The railway system is in chaos, thanks to the government's incompetence.

　統語的には文頭や文末に来るのが普通で，特に文末の場合には後から添えるかのように用いられることが多いようだ．
　この thanks to は，Quirk et al. (§9.10) によれば，2語からなる複合前置詞である．第2要素に to が続く複合前置詞の1つとしてリストアップされており，ほかには according to, as to, close to, contrary to , due to, near(er) (to), next to, on to, owing to, preliminary to, preparatory to, previous, prior to, pursuant to, up to などが挙げられる．複合前置詞であるというとらえ方は，話者が共時的にこの表現を名詞 thanks と前置詞 to とに分析して理解しているわけではないことを含意するが，thanks の「感謝；おかげ」，また皮肉としての「?のせい」の意味がまったく関与していないと言い切ることも難しい．その証拠として，「?の助けによらず」ほどの意味で用いられる no thanks to . . . の表現がある．ここでは，名詞や間投詞としての thanks vs no thanks という構図が先にあり，その対立が to を付した各々の複合前置詞にも及んでいると考えられる．no thanks to の例文もいくつか挙げよう．助けてくれるはずだった人が助けてくれなかったことを皮肉るのに用いられることが多いようだ．

　・ We managed to get it finished in the end --- no thanks to him.
　・ It was no thanks to you that we managed to win the game.
　・ At long last we made it, no thanks to you.
　・ The vote passed, no thanks to the mayor.

　文末で文修飾的に用いられることが多いということから考えると，この A, (no) thanks to B というパターンは，A, for which I should say (no) thanks to B あるいは A, for which (no) thanks should be given to B とパラフレーズできそうである．もちろん，これは歴史的に後者が統語的につづまって前者へ発達したということを意味するわけではない．歴史的にいかに発達したかは，別途，調べる必要がある．OED によると，初例として1631年の文例が挙げられており，それほど古いものではないことがわかる．接続法を用いた thanks be given to . . . なる，主節から独立した用法などから発展した可能性があるのではないかと睨んでいる．
