文学史的には，John Lydgate (c1370--1449) は Chaucer の追随者にすぎず，独創性という点では見劣りがするものと評価されることが多い（「#2503. 中英語文学」 ([2016-03-04-1]) を参照）．15世紀イングランドの宮廷のパトロンとして政治的な詩人とも言われ，その長大な著作は，彼の置かれていた環境によって，書いたというよりは書かされたともいえるものである．文体的には，「#292. aureate diction」 ([2010-02-13-1]) で触れたように，ラテン語を散りばめた華麗語法の使い手としても知られている．
　Pearsall は，"Lydgate as Innovator" という意外な題のもとに論考を著わし，Lydgate の英文学史上の再評価を試みている．結論としては，Lydgate は Chaucer が生み出した数々の作詩上の新機軸を模倣し，強調し，拡大することによって，それが後世に伝統として受け継がれていく礎を築いた，ということである．Pearsall の主張点をいくつか抜き出そう．

. . . Lydgate's career, poem by poem, was a determined effort not just to emulate Chaucer but to surpass him in each of the major poetic genres he had attempted. (7)

. . . Lydgate's ambitious attempt to build an English poetic tradition by "fortifying" (in Dryden's sense) preliminary structures thrown up by Chaucer . . . . (7)

. . . Lydgate did on a large scale what Chaucer had first hinted at on a small scale and in so doing introduced change by sheer reiteration. (8)

. . . Lydgate found himself extending the outbuildings of the mansion of English poetry that Chaucer had established. All he knew was how to lay one line beside another, but somehow, accidentally, he invented the English poetic tradition. (22)

　では，Lydgate の英語史上に果たした役割は何だろうか．Pearsall によると，Lydgate は，英語がラテン語やフランス語に比肩する文学語として機能し得ることを示した Chaucer の路線を決定的にし，さらに拡張するという役割を果たしたのだという．とりわけ新語彙導入に，Lydgate は大きく貢献したようだ．Pearsall (8--9) 曰く，"Someone . . . had to do the work of introducing the many new words that English needed to cope with the vast new range of responsibilities it was taking over from Latin and French, and in an extraordinarily large number of cases it was Lydgate."
　OED によると，Lydgate が初例となっている単語は少なくない．例えば abuse (vb.), adjacent, capacity, circumspect, combine (vb.), credulity, delude, depend, disappear, equivalent, excel などの通用単語が含まれる．Lydgate はこれらの単語を単に導入しただけではなく，繰り返し用いて定着に貢献したという点も見逃してはならない．同様に，Lydgate 自身が導入者ではなくとも，例えば Chaucer が導入したものの1度しか用いなかったような単語を，繰り返し人々の目に触れるようにした功績も看過できない．MED による調査では，casual, circular, continuation, credible, dishonest, examination, existence, femininity, finally, foundation, ignorant, influence, intelligence, introduction, modify, onward, opposition, perverse, refuge, remorse, rigour, seriously などが，そのような単語として挙げられる．逆にいえば，現代の私たちが Chaucer の言語に何らかの親しみを感じるとすれば，それは Lydgate が間に入って結びつけてくれているからとも言えるのである (Pearsall 9) ．
　今ひとつ Lydgate の英語史上の役割をあげれば，華麗語法を導入することで「権威ある英語変種とはこれのことだ」と公的に宣言し，Henry V を筆頭とする体制側からはいかがわしく見えた Lollard などの用いる他の変種との差別化を図ったということがあろう．体制側からの「正しい」変種の喧伝である．Pearsall (20) は，Lydgate の aureate diction をそのように位置づけている．

[T]he writing that [Henry V] encouraged, and the writing that Lydgate did . . . in the aureate and Latinate style, demonstrates, one may assume, a policy of reasserting a kind of English as remote as possible from the vernacular promulgated in Lollard writings and biblical translation. English had replaced French as the literary language of England and was increasingly taking over roles traditionally reserved for Latin, but there were kinds of English more appropriate than the language of the people to the preservation of the clerical monopoly and its state sponsors. "Aureation" in Lydgate may be seen in this light as a political choice as well as a stylistic one.
