The various factors involved in the adoption of a particular spelling as the OED headword is apparent from a comparison of the treatment of axe in the first and second editions. The first edition (published in 1885) employed the spelling ax for its headword, noting that this spelling is 'better on every ground, of etymology, phonology, and analogy, than axe, which has of late become prevalent'. But, despite its continued support for the spelling ax, the second edition of 1989 adopted axe for its headword, noting that, despite its many advantages, ax had by this time fallen out of use entirely.

 イギリス英語において慣用として <axe> が通用されるようになったので,OED としてもそちらを採用するという記述だが,なぜ <axe> が通用されるようになったのかという問題については触れられていない.ここで,3文字規則がその答えの少なくとも一部であろうということは主張できそうである.イギリス英語において <ax> が潰えた今となっては,明らかな例外は ox のみとなる.
なお,OED Online によれば,語源欄の記述が2版から少々変更されており,"The spelling ax is better on every ground, of etymology, phonology, and analogy, than axe, which became prevalent during the 19th century; but it is now disused in Britain." となっていることを付け加えておこう.
