[2013-01-05-1]の記事「#1349. procrastination の生成過程」で，ラテン単語が英語に取り込まれる際に適用される形態音韻規則について，Bloomfield に拠って議論した．この規則は，近代英語期までに至るラテン語との長い接触を通じて通時的に育まれ，共時的に定着したものである．規則というよりは半ば自然に発達してきた慣習と言い換えてもよいかもしれないが，これをあたかも意識的に制定した規則であるかのように解説した記述がある．Thomas Blount の Glossographia (1656) である（Glossographia を含む記事を参照）．Brengelman (353) に，その Blount の記述がまとまっているので，それを再現する．

　上の規則は，Brengelman (353) によれば，3点に要約できるという．

(1) retain and Anglicize derivational endings; (2) delete purely inflectional endings; (3) leave prefixes and bases unchanged.

　この規則に沿わない例があることは18世紀にも指摘されているが (ex. explain, proceed, labour) ，そのような語は，すでに辞書において固定化してしまっていたのだろう．
